.................... So we went to Houston last weekend. Brad and I haven’t had a vacation together in –Jesus- years and we figured a nice little weekend trip down south would be fun and cheap. Plus we’d get to see Shelley , who we haven’t seen in probably just as long as our last vacation.
I’ve actually never been to Houston before. I always figured I already live in a soulless, sprawling, metropolis so why bother driving 4.5 hours to the next one? Plus, as anyone who is from Texas will tell you, Houston tends to be one of those places that most people always refer to with a grunt and a sneer- like “Ugh, I have to go to Houston to visit my family.” It has kind of a reputation for being a hot, sticky dump.
Personally though, I was rather pleasantly surprised. It was definitely big and dirty but it also seemed to have an ease and charm about it that Dallas never really seems capable of. And the weather was fabulous to boot.
Anyways, first full day there we decided to visit the Menil Collection which is basically a small museum-along with the famous Rothko Chapel and Byzantine Fresco chapel- that sits in a nice little park in the middle of some older yuppy neighborhood. Best thing is that not only does it have excellent works of art from the Ancient to the modern, but it’s also completely free.
Of course, the real reason I visited the City came on Sunday which is when I had bought all of us tickets to go see “Spring Awakening” at the Hobby Center downtown. It was so awesome! Not quite as awesome as when I saw it on Broadway, but that should be a given. I did however score us some kick ass seats up close so we could see all the action perfectly. BTW if you haven’t seen “Spring Awakening” and it comes through your town, GO! Its so much fun and the music is fabulous. Plus you get to see boobies and butts! I made sure to get a nice right orchestra seat so we could get a head-on view of Melchior’s (Kyle Riabko) ass. YUM! Luckily, Brad and Shelley enjoyed their selves a lot-it was their first ever Broadway Musical- and now we’re discussing possibly meeting up in Austin to see Spamalot, Avenue Q, and Wicked which are coming through the UT Bass Hall later this year. And surprise! Spring Awakening will be coming through in late October so I’ll definitely be there Spring Awakening Tony Performance-Mama, BoL, Totally!

Okay, after totally crapping on Mario Tarradell of the DMN's (ahem) 'list' of the best albums of 2008. I figured I should offer up a little of my own just to be fair. But sorry, its just five, I don't have time to work out ten. Anyways, here we go. (I provided videos where I could find them) .. Walking on a Dream by Empire of The Sun- This is actually a fairly new find that I made while listening to XMU on my way home from work one day. I believe they're Australian, but I'm not sure. Actually, I'm not even sure you can buy this in the USA. (Like how thoroughly I've researched my selections?) Anyways, who cares where they're from as long as the music is good and this album is damn good in my humble opinion. But how to describe it.....hmmm...It's like the soundtrack from an 80's serial killer movie, but in a good way. In fact, this album brings to mind several images such as: disco balls, foggy roller rinks, and multi-colored spaceships descending from the heavens, its that fun. So turn down the lights, turn up the volume, and shake it like its 1988. .. Santogold by Santogold- I hate hip hop, I LOVE this album. Catchy, dancey, modern, and suprisingly intelligent. How we didn't hear more of this on the radio I'll never know. This is what music is all about. Shots by Ladyhawk- This album makes me want a leather jacket, a cigarette, and a pompadour. One of the few albums that I can listen to all the way through on a loop The Airing of Grievances Titus Andronicus- This is the kind of album that you listen to A)While driving fast B) While drunk C) While you're kicking the shit out of someone. This is everything rock should be fun; misery; guitars and a bunch of people screaming Fuck YOU! Suck it Third Day .. Carried to Dust by Calexico- This album is like a desert sunset. No I'm not trying to be deep. Just listen to it and you'll see what I mean. Mariachi, Spanish, great guitar, what else do you need? Its the audio equivalent of prozac and a glass of wine.

Okay so this week the local (and only) daily newspaper in Dallas, The Dallas Morning News, came out with it's list of the 10 Best Albums of 2008, and boy was it a doozy. Now, I normally take lists like this with a grain of salt because I realize that music is pretty objective, but this list almost made me lose my lunch. Of all the great and fantastic albums that came out this year (and there were alot) how the hell would any critic worth his salt choose Leanne Womack and Kylie Minogue (yeah I know, she had an album out) as his numbers 2 and 3. And the number one you ask? Well thats none other than Revelation from the Christian 'rock' band Third Day. Of course! Didn't you know?
Wait, what the fuck? You mean to tell me that Third Day is not only the best rock band this year but also the best band overall? Is this a joke?
Oh if only it were. But believe me, I already received 2 replies from Mario Tarradell, the critic responsible for this travesty, he's dead serious and completely unrepentant.
And to just further hammer home the point that this guy is the single worst music critic in America, he also gave us his top ten concerts of the year. Was it the LCD dreamscape of NIN at American Airlines Center? The zaney Buddha filled Dali painting that was Of Montreal at House of Blues? Nope.
Its groundbreaking shows like Tina Turner, Third Day (of course...duh), Brad Paisley, Shelby Lynne, Cyndi Lauper, and (gasp) Sarah Brightman. You'll have to excuse me while I punch myself in the balls.

I saw my high school on the local television news today. Apparently, the drama boosters are putting on a production of the Broadway musical, "Rent" and now a group of 'concerned' parents are-in the words of the oh-so-unbiased NBC news affiliate- "fighting back". They are going to the local board and demanding that the production of the play be stopped because they believe that it promotes and glamorizes drug use, homosexuality, and irresponsible behavior.
Umm, have these people seen "Rent" ? I happen to like it myself, but I also think it would be pretty easy to prove that it doesn't in fact promote any of those things. Hell, the junkie girlfriend almost freezes to death, the rocker catches HIV from sharing needles, and the drag queen dies of AIDS. When you break it down it's probably the most moralistic musical on Broadyway. Its just missing the part where they all start alienating their friends and family by trying to talk to them about having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
All kidding aside though, this whole thing really pisses me off. I mean these kids have obviously worked hard and put their heart into this show and now they're being forced to defend themselves against adults who obviously haven't even read the edited script much less seen the actual musical or film. It's silly, it's pointless, and it's just plain mean-spirited.
To all you crazy cry babies who are responsible: If you're so dead set on believing that "Rent" is going to confuse and scar your child, then do what I always did every year come "South Pacific" time-Don't by a ticket! It's not a difficult solution and it doesn't involve obliterating other people's hard work.

Well its Black Friday and I had to work. Oh well, I think I'd rather sit around on my ass and get paid time and a half than troll the corridors of the mall. Actually, when I think about, this whole notion of Black Friday is just silly and more than a little disgusting. Not that I'm some crazy, liberal anti-consumerist that thinks everyone should weave their own clothes and grow their own food. God knows I love to shop and when I do it certainly isn't cheap. Its just that I find the whole thing with staying up until 3am and camping out in front of the Best Buy and Wal-Mart to be so undignified.
To me, shopping is a pleasant experience where you take your time, examine the merchandise, and let sales people kiss your butt. Not where you're wrestling with trashy poor people just for a few bucks off some off-brand flatscreen TV. Its just not worth the headache especially when you can find good deals early and just get the whole damn business of shopping for presents over and done with before the holidays even really start. I bought all of Brad's presents on sale, online, for ridiculous discounts weeks ago. Now, all I have left now is a couple of toys and some gift cards and I can just sit back, relax, and enjoy Jesus' Birthday-like he intended.

So ever since the election I keep seeing stories about California's Prop 8 banning gay marriage and the role the black vote had in getting it passed. Personally, while I'm dissapointed and more than a little offended by this setback, I'm not freaking out. The writing is on the wall concerning gay rights and its very much in our favor. Its just a matter of time. Of course, we should still protest and speak out, but lets not get so down and start blaming black people. Especially since it was old people who were the real villains in this story. They voted overwhelmingly for the ban, regardless of race. But they'll be dead soon enough, so I wouldn't worry.
I'm more disturbed by the lack of conversation going on in the gay community about why, exactly, the black community- and, I think minority communities in general- seem to be somewhat unsure when it comes to gay rights. In fact, the few times I have actually heard the subject come up, its almost always simply explained away by blaming the black church and the deeply rooted role of religion and traditional family values in the progression of the black community. Personally, while I think religion and the black church certainly play's a role in the negative view of homosexuality in black communities, I don't think its the most important one. Rather, I feel like a larger bit of the blame lies more with the gay community and its seeming inability to effectively communicate its message to minority communities, African-Americans in particular. Thats not to say the gay community isn't full of diversity, far from it actually. The gay community consists of people from all different racial, social, and religious backgrounds from far and wide. However, our problem doesn't necessarily lie in our communities themselves but rather how we present ourselves to the outside world.
Watch any movie, open any magazine, read any gay weekly, even check out some of the people who run the support organizations. It doesn't take long to get an image of the gay community which is predominantly white, male, and well-to-do; an image that I can't imagine too many blacks and other minorities relating to. Hell, even I have a hard time relating to it, and I'm pretty damn white-washed. So, that being said, is it any wonder that African-Americans, a minority group that historically has suffered so much exploitation and oppression from rich white men, would be somewhat suspicious of the gay movement?
What the gay community needs to do, rather than just blaming black people for the loss of their rights, is to look inward and reevaluate the message that they're putting out. They need to get to know these communities and reach out to it's members, who are gay, to speak out and give our movement a more relatable face. Maybe then, when black people-and minorities in general- see that its not just about a bunch of homogenous, middle-class white guys wanting to register at Macy's, but rather about people just wanting to live their lives, then maybe we might get somewhere.

I'm very sad. XM radio has replaced Fungus XM, the 24/7 punk rock channel-which I fucking loved-, with AC/DC radio. Thats right all AC/DC all the time whenever and wherever you want it.
If that wasn't insulting enough, their suggestion for a replacement station to listen to is the new XM FACTION channel which is advertised as the "extreme sports music"channel. Not sure what that means exactly, but apparently it involves a lot of Metallica and Linkin Park which has nothing to do whatsoever with punk rock. I guess if Tony Hawk introduces it its automatically punk rock or something.
OH A POX ON YOU XM!!!

Well, election day is finally here! I don't know about you but I am so excited and nervous all at once. I feel like a kid at xmas that is about to open the big box from grandma which is either that really awesome toy you've been begging for, for months, or pajamas.
I'm pretty sure my side is gonna win this one, for once, but I won't be okay until I know for sure. I've just gotten so used to losing. It wouldn't exactly be the first time our hopes and dreams were crushed on election night, and this one would be especially horrendous.
