HBO- "BARBER SHOP" DOCUMENTARY

Title: CUTTING EDGE Premieres Monday, Feb. 6 at 7 pm on Cinemax
Premieres: Monday, February 6, 2009 @ 7:00 P.M. on Cinemax

Cutting Edge

An informal, Inside look at a busy Harlem barbershop that serves as a lively forum for black men to discuss any topic, whether controversial or banal, sacred or profane, political or personal.

SYNOPSIS:

This one-hour verité documentary shows a day in the life of a successful barbershop on Harlem's 125th Street. The film shows the vital role community barbershops play as a forum for black men to discuss any topic, whether controversial or banal, sacred or profane, political or personal, in an environment of heated debate and/or male fellowship. Topics discussed in the film include HIV/AIDS, infidelity, gay marriage, greedy preachers, Bill Clinton, the world's sexiest actresses, and more. Though in some ways this is a quintessential black barbershop, where macho attitudes often prevail, women do play a role in the shop's conversations, and with the increasing gentrification of the area, a number of diverse clients (including a white gay man) occasionally enter the mix.

Spirited, funny and fast-paced, Cutting Edge takes an informal, inside look at Levels, a bustling barbershop located in the heart of Harlem. As the opening narration explains, barbershops are "the nexus of all black male life: young, old and everything in between. It's where brothers come to show love and get the latest styles... As barbers, we consider ourselves craftsmen, artists. Using clippers like a paintbrush, a man's head is a canvas. But above all, a shop is a place where brothers come to converse: to rhyme, to clown, to wage verbal warfare about race, politics, sex, our kids, our relationships, our struggles, our joys... [It is] our town hall, our sanctuary."

BARBERING, "A FORM OF ART ! "

The INTERNATIONAL BARBER ASSOCIATION~ Is very Proud to be a part of this fine Industry and of Our efforts to help further the advancement of the Trade. We Thank You for Joining Us in Our Quest! The I.B.A.~ strongly believes that the rich cultural heritage this Vocation has developed should be the basis for Great Prestige and Respect Barbers very much deserve for Their Service to the Public.

Archeological examinations reveal that some crude forms of Facial and Hair Adornment were practiced even by Prehistoric People as far back as the Glacial Age. As Civilization advanced, The Practice of Barbering developed Greatly and became a Professional recognized Vocation/Trade.

Our Staff here at The I.B.A.~ often refers to this Trade as, "The Art of Barbering," and uses Terminology such as, "Hair Sculpting," "Hair Shaping," "Design Work,"  and so on... We truly believe this Trade/Industry is definitely a FORM OF ART!

To prove Our Theory Correct We've done some research on the Topic. Our Expert Staff has compiled some Definitions on some interesting wording that We're sure will have You agreeing with Us one hundred percent. Please take a look below and decide for Yourself if You feel Barbering is truly, "A FORM OF ART !"

Definitions:

1.) BARBER- One Whose Business/Occupation is cutting and dressing human hair, Shaving and trimming facial hair, and performing related services.

2.) SCIENCE OF BARBERING- The science of Professional Master Barbering denotes the Great fund of Knowledge available in this Industry. This exact science has been developed into a systematic and coherent body of related Barber-Stytling information.

3.) PRACTICE OF BARBERING- The Practice of Professional Master Barbering deals with the manual skills and dexterity demonstrated by the Professional Practitioner in the performance of the various Barber-Styling services.

4.) THEORY OF BARBERING- Preperation, Professional Ethics, Sterilization, Implements, & Application are the main areas of interest that bring this Profession together as a Whole.

THESE FOUR KEY DEFINITIONS ARE WHAT MAKES THIS TRADE A PROFESSIONALLY LICENSED OCCUPATION AND THE OLDEST LEGAL TRADE IN THE WORLD...

*NOW FOR THE MOST IMPORTANT DEFINITION THAT WE BELIEVE PROVES OUR WAY OF THINKING:

*ART: (DEFINITION:) 1.) The quality Production, Expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary signifigance. 2.) A field, Genre, or category of something is classified as an art form. 3.) Any field using the skills or techniques of art. 4.) The principles or methods governing any craft or branch of learning. (The Art of Barbering!) 5.) Skilled workmanship, execution, or agency, as distinguished from nature. 6.) Studied action; artificially in behavior. 7.) Archaic, Science, Learning, or Scolarship.

THE INTERNATIONAL BARBER ASSOCIATION~ NOW BELIEVES WITH THE OUTCOME OF OUR RESEARCH THAT OUR WAY OF THINKING REGARDING THIS INDUSTRY IS NOT ONLY A THEORY BUT A FACT!

~THE RISE AND FALL OF BARBER-SURGEONS~

During the Middle Ages, The Barbers not only practiced Shaving, Hair Cutting, and Hair Dressing but also dressed wounds and performed surgical operations and procedures. For this reason they were referred to as, "Barber Surgeons." Much of their experience was aquired from the Monks, whom they assisted in the practice of Surgery and medicine. The Barber Surgeons formed their first Organization in France, in the year 1096.

The Barber-Surgeons became quite numerous when Pope Alexander III forbade the Clergy to shed blood in surgical operations. As a result of this decree, most of the surgery performed was done by Barbers. At this time the only form of Dentistry was performed by Barbers, including pulling teeth. Barbers also did Blood-Letting. The people of this time period believed by intentionally letting Yourself bleed would allow all of the bad diseased blood to escape ones body and  become healthy once again.

To protect themselves, The Barbers' company of London was formed and organized in the Thirteenth Century. The object of this Trade Guild was to regulate the profession for the benefit of its Members. One of the regulations passed was that no Barber was to keep more than four Apprentices in Their Establishment.

The Babers' company was ruled by a Master, and consisted of two classes of Barbers, viz: those who practiced Barbering and those who specialized in surgery. Under Edward III, The Barbers made a complaint against unskilled practitioners in surgery. As a result, The Court chose two Masters to inspect and rule the Guild and give examinations to test the skill level of applicants.

The sign of the Barber-Surgeon consisted of a striped pole from which was suspended a basin: the fillet around the pole indicating the bandage twisted around the arms previous to blood-letting and the basin the vessel for receiving blood. Another interpretation of the colors on the Barber Pole was that the red color represented the blood, blue the veins, and white the bandages. The white represented the bandages before use. After they were used the bandages were washedand hung out to dry. The blood stained bandages would blow and twist together forming a pattern similar to todays modern Barber Pole. This sign, without the basin, has been generally retained by the Modern Barber-Stylist and proudly displayed in front of most Barber Shop Establishments.

Besides the Barbers' Company, there was also a Surgeons Guild in England. There was reason to believe that competition and antagonism existed between these two Organizations. In 1450, Both Groups were united by law for the purpose of fostering the science of surgery. A law was enacted that no one performing surgery should practice Barbering and that no Barber should Practice any phase of surgery except the pulling of teeth. The long slumbering jealousy between the two Guilds soon reached a climax. The Surgeons harbored a dislike for a system under which diplomas were signed by Governors, two of whom were always Barbers. Finally, in 1745 a bill was passed seperating the Barbers from Surgeons.

The Barber-Surgeons also flourished in France and Germany. In 1371 a Corporation was organized by the French Barber-Surgeons under the rule of the King's Barber. With the advent of the French Revolution, The Corporation was dissolved. Wigs became so elaborate in the Ninteenth Century that a seperate Corporation of Barbers was founded in France. Not until 1779 was a Corporation founded in Prussia. This was disbanded in 1809 when new Unions were created.

The Dutch and Swedish settlers in America brought with them Barber-Surgeons from their native countries to look after the well being of the Colonists. They not only Shaved, but performed everyday medical and surgical procedures.

The INTERNATIONAL BARBER ASSOCIATION~ Thanks You for Reading our Latest Blog Submission and hopes You've enjoyed this peak into the History of our Great Trade!
