Dental insurance vs dental plans? - Which is better?
Help! I have to go to the dentist and get some work done on my teeth. It's going to cost me quite a bit. Can I get some sort of dental insurance or a dental plan to help me pay?
So does anyone know anything about dental plans? Are they better than dental insurance? They seem cheaper. But it all seems too good to be true! So does anyone have one or know anything about them? Please let me know.
First, just call up your dentist or dental office and explain your general problems to them. Ask them about the procedures you will need and rough estimate about how much it is going to cost you. Ask them about the dental plans and dental insurance that they generally accept.
Second, Dental Insurance is always better. But it is cost effective only when you get it through either your employer or through that of your spouse. Individual dental insurance is very expensive and many companies don't offer them as it means you are getting it mainly to get treated and that's a definite drain on their resources with out getting anything in return. A group plan on other hand helps them recoup their costs as a large number of patients will be paying the insurance and only a few will be availaing of the treatment.
If you can't dental insurance through your office or employer find out if your local chamber of commerce has any arrangements with any dental insurance company. If they have then you can a group dental insurance plan at a lower cost than if you tried to get it all yourself.
Dental Plans are not insurance but are like discount clubs. The company selling these plans gets a few dentists together and asks them to accept patients at a lower cost then they would normally charge. So, $100 dollar service is provided at $80 if you are a member of the dental plan and the dentist is part of this contracted group of dentists.
With dental insurance there are waiting periods, co-pays and deductibles. There is annual limit on how much you can spend on your treatment per year. You can't get treatment for pre-existing conditions.
So, you can't get treated for dental and tooth problems that already exist under a dental insurance.
A discount dental plan has no such restrictions but you have to pay a major part of your expenses. But, if you consider all the restrictions, limitations of dental insurance you might just be better off with a dental plans. However make your own assement and choose the best option for you.

Do dental schools accept dental insurance or Dental Discount Plans?
Many dental schools accept dental insurance and discount dental plans. But, the answer about which specific insurance or plan they are accepting is best answered by that particular dental school or clinic.
Do dental schools do good work on patients?
A lot of people have had good experiences at dental schools. Mostly you will be worked on by dental school students who want the experience. They are closely supervised by their professors and seniors. So, no need to worry. In fact the work they do might be much better as they want to the best job they can. Even if they make mistakes very qualified and trained professors are always around to correct the problem.
Are dental schools more expensive than your local dentist?
Most often dental schools charge you much less compared to the dentists. The students needs to learn and they need patients on whom they can practice their craft. So, the schools charge only very little for the actual material cost and so on. So you can expect a bil that is a fraction of the cost at your dentists. Anyway it is always safer and wiser to ask first. Find out what your costs will be and compare with your dentists office. Also, ask if they accept dental insurance or dental plans. If they do they you pay even less out of your pocket.
How do I go about getting accepted at a dental school clinic?
First call them and ask their procedure for accepting patients. If you need to fill in application do it and you might be put on a waiting list and called when your turn comes. However, if you have an emergency let them know. Some schools might not accept emergencies depending on their schedule. So ask.
What kind of treatment can I expect at dental schools?
You can expect the some of best treatment at the fraction of the cost even if you have to wait for longer times. As the students need to learn their craft they need patients to practice the latest and cutting edge technologies. So, you will most likely get the most modern procedures.

Please Help Me Find The Best Dental Insurance Cover!!
This is a question I frequently come across on various forums and discussion rooms on the Internet and in real world when it comes to dental insurance.
People are confused
- by the range and variety of dental insurance plans that are available.
- by the jargon used by the industry.
- about what is right for them.
Let's look at how to go about finding the best dental insurance.
First understand your needs.
Do you need comprehensive dental cover or just the basics like cleanings and routine check-ups?
Do you need national-wide cover or is just your local cover is enough? This may be relevant for frequent travellers.
Do you have children and do they need braces, correction of under-bite or over-bite and and any other dental care?
How many of your family need the cover?
Remember that for your every additional requirement you will be paying extra as premiums. A comprehensive cover will cost you more than a basic dentalinsurance, a chance to choose your own dentist will cost more than if you have to go by dentists on the panel of the dental insurance company and so on.
So, like anything in life you need to find a balance between your wants, needs and the money you can afford to pay for your dental insurance. There is no sense in paying more for coverage that you might never need. Nor is there any sense in not having the coverage you really need. So, the right match is important.
Once, you have a rough idea about what you would like in your dental cover, next step is look at the dental insurance companies that offer their services in your area, find the plans that offer similar terms to what you are looking for, compare the costs and the premiums you will need to pay.
Some dental plans may offer lower premiums but it will mean you pay more when you undergo a treatment. For instance there may be more deductibles and co-pays. The annual limits may be lower. The percentage of treatment costs you pay may be more than for a higher premium product.
It is good idea to talk to dental insurance agent or a customer service rep and ask them to explain terms that you don't understand. The insurance industry like any financial product industry like to hide behind a range of legal terms. Don't be intimidated by them.
Talk to agents and ask them to explain each term clearly and in simple english with examples if need be. It is the job of the insurance company to match your needs with the appropriate dental insurance plans in their stable of products.
If at any time you feel that what you have got is not right for your needs just go ahead and ask for the appropriate change.
Perhaps, all you want or need is a simple dental discount plan that offers a discount on various treatments. You are just not interested in the dental insurance or all the jargon or contact with the insurance staff. It is simple to buy dental plans online with out any hassles.
Just go ahead and choose a company that has a good track record and has been around for long and whom you can trust.

No dental insurance plan gives 80% dental coverage. Even if there were such plans you will pay hefty premiums for such large percentage of coverage. Apart from that you will be faced with limitations - on annual spending and type of treatment. Then there are the waiting periods, deductibles, co-pays.
Only group dental insurance issued through employers cover 50 % or so of your dental treatment costs. If you have individual dental insurance then you won't be eligible for even this. The coverage will be much less.
Put the money you would pay as premiums in a bank account and use it only for dental emergencies. This is a more cost effective method if you are finacially disciplined person. Even if you put in just 50 dollars a month you will have $600 at the end of the year to which you can keep adding to every month. Use this money only for dental treatment and for no other purpose.
If you pay premiums of even $100 dollars a month, that is $1200 dollars in premiums alone only a small percentage of which will go towards your treatment the rest going towards the bottomline and salaries of employees of dental insurance companies.
Make an estimate of what dental treatments you might require over the years. You could consult with your dentist about this and save a reasonable amount of money in your dental account.
To make the most of what you have, get a membership in a dental discount club or dental plans that is local to your area like this dental discount plan at
http://www.a1-dental-insurance.com.
These plans can cost between 100-200 dollars but will give you nice discounts on dental treaments costs and you can also get free cleanings and checkups as part of the membership benefits which would be what you would any way spend when you visit your dentist for twice a year check-ups.

Need affordable, comprehensive, dental insurance for your family?
If you don't get dental insurance from your employer as part of your benefits package, then it is really tough and quite expensive to dental insurance on your own. One option is to try your local chamber of commerce. They might offer you dental insurance at group rates.
Dental Insurance companies usually work with major employers. This way it works cheaper as the employers can bargain for group rates for the whole company and you get the benefit of paying lower premiums.
But a more cost effective method if you are finacially disciplined person is start a savings account on your own for dental problems and put in what ever money you would pay as insurance premiums. Even if you put in just 100 dollars a month you will have $1200 at the end of the year to which you can keep adding every month. Only use this money for dental treatment and for no other purpose.
Make an estimate of what dental treatments you/your child might require over the years. You could consult with your dentist about this and save a reasonable amount of money in your dental account.
To make the most of what you have, get a membership in a dental discount club or dental plans that is local to your area like this dental discount plan at http://www.a1-dental-insurance.com.
These plans can cost between 100-200 dollars but will give you nice discounts on dental treaments costs and you can also get free cleanings and checkups as part of the membership benefits which would be what you would any way spend when you visit your dentist for twice a year check-ups.
Dental insurance is not worth all the money that we spend on them because of the limitations on annual spending, the type of treatment we can get, waiting periods, co-pays, deductibles and so on.
It is better to save your money in your account where it earns interest rather than pay the fat salaries of dental insurance company executives!
I found this the hard way. When I needed some dental implant surgery my dental insurance company refused saying it was the not least expensive alternative treatment that combined with annual limit meant I could get only 1500 dollars for my treatment. I ended up paying for the the rest of the treatment which made a sizeable dent in my savings. This after years of paying dental insurance premiums with no major dental treatments.
I ended up paying loads of money to the dental insurance companies and received very little in return.

Before you buy a dental plan remember to consider the following
1. Check the dentist who are contracted with the panel. Visit one or two closest to your area. Will you be comfortable with them.
2. Check the fee schedule. How much discount can you get for de ifferent dental treatments?
3. Are free cleanings, dental visits included in the membership plan.
4. Are they any restrictions?
5. Are they any waiting periods?
6. Are they any annual limits?
7. Can you go to any dentist contracted under the plan?
8. Is the plan national, local or state level?
9. Is there any co-pay, minimum deductible etc.
10. Is the cost of plan worth the benefits you will receive?

Which is better Dental Discount Plans or Dental Insurance? The Cost Vs Benefits Debate
Dental Insurance is definitely better than a discount dental plan. But it is much more expensive and so can afford to be superior.
Most people who have dental insurance get it through their employer. The employer uses their bulk buying power to get group rates which is much less expensive then when purchased privately or individually. So, if you can get dental insurance their a big employer it is one of the best deals you can ever get as far as dental care goes.
On the other hand, a discount dental plan costs only a fraction of what dental insurance costs making it very affordable. But you only a standard discount on most dental treatment procedures. Dental discounts eliminates the dental insurance company as a middleman and passes the savings on to it's members as discounts.
If you have to buy dental insurance on your own well, don't it is too expensive. You might as well buy a dental discount plan for what ever it is worth and save the money you would pay the insurance company into a separate account called your dental account. Don't touch it unless you have a dental emergency. You will save a lot more, have the choice of dentist and dental treatment and not be restricted to the many rules and conditions of the dental insurance company.
Also, you won't be subsidising the fat salaries of dental insurance company executives and adding to their profit margins.
For example, something like dental implants is not covered by most dental insurance companies. The premiums let's say at $60 a month with $100 deductible and $1,000 annual maximum, means you will be paying - $720 + $100 = $820 out of your own pocket before you realize any gain from your dental insurance.
Then you have the co-payements. Add the numbers and do the math yourself and you will understand the point I am trying to make.

What does a person with no job, no money and no dental insurance do when they have a dental emergency? What are their options?
1. If it is a dental emergency then most dentists will do the work and bill you later. Check out if your local dentist will do this.
2. If you fall below the certain income level then you will be eligible for medicaid. Find out if your state provides for medicaid and with dental problems are covered under this.
3. If your teeth no longer hurt then get a job and start saving to get your teeth fixed. But if you teeth hurt really bad and you don't have any money nor access to medicaid or government funded dental care then your only option may be to get your teeth extracted.
4. Your local public health center may have dental treatment facilities. Phone them and ask where and when you can get free or low-cost dental treatment.
5. Join the military, they have free medical and dental care.
6. Make enquiries with your local dentist about payment plans. Many dentists are offering payment plans such as "Care Credit" to help with payment of heft dental treatment charges. If you have good credit rating this is an excellent option to consider. They offer interest free payment option for the first 18 months.
This great option allows you to get treatment now and pay over a period of year and half with no interest. Great for low-income people who need expensive treatment in a hurry.
Waiting for long periods can be bad for your teeth. The tooth can go completely bad and become unsaveable and needs to be extracted/pulled. This can cause other teeth to drift and considerably lessen your chewing ability.
Since, you have no dental insurance you can shop around and find who has Care Credit or another payment plan. If you find an office that can offer you a better payment option, you can have your x-rays and other info sent from your current dentist.
Usually, dentists won't offer this option to total strangers.
7. Putting off dental work only makes it more expensive doawn the road. A quick fix is have an extraction with some borrowed money from family. Once you find a job you can save up for a bridge or what ever treatment recommended by your dentist.
A bad tooth is a sure recipe for more pain, infection, absess, agony.
8. Check out the local dental school in your area. Students usually perform these sevices that take longer are cheaper.
9. Check out other community health options in your area which might be working on a sliding fee schedules. They can be state wide or county specific.
10. Talk to your dentist. Explain your situation. They are human too and might do the work for payment later.. Talk to the billing people at your dentist office. Ask if you can make very small monthly payments and increase it as soon as you find a job.
11. Last but not the least explore the dental discount plan option. It may save a lot of dollars in discounts on expensive dental treatment.

Some fee for service dental plans are quite good, but there is no substitute for a comprehensive dental plan. Most dental insurance have waiting periods from anywhere between 6 months to 2 years for the more expensive treatment plans so now doubt they don't have a very good reputation among the patients. But on the other hand a dental discount plan is an affordable plan that has NO waiting periods for anything and lets you see any dentist on their panel.
You need to be cautious about any dental plan. You will want to contact some of the dentist on the list to make sure they are taking the plan. Discount plans just give you a discount on the normal fee that a dentist will charge. There is no control over what the discount is. Very few dentist will actually accept a discount plan so check the dentists who are in the contracted to the dental plan and who are available locally.
Unless your employer provides dental insurance there is no easy way of getting it on your own. Dental insurance is usually provided by the big corporates to their employees as benefits. If you want only dental insurance and nothing else then try your local chamber of commerce. They usually have group dental plans which you can avail of after paying required premiums. But be sure to check that you are getting what you are paying for.
So, if you need some kind of discount for your dental treatment then the next best option is to get a dental discount plan. These membership based cards offer discounts on all treatments if you go to a dentist on the panel of dental plan you choose to buy. They will have a schedule of fees that you can check before you buy that particular plan option.
Dental Plans is an online company that has been around for many years and has built a great reputation for being top in the dental discount plans and providing quality service. If you need further information check out this website

A large number of employers want employees to contribute more towards dental premiums. Some have altogether dropped offering dental benefits to their employees. Increased payments towards family dental insurance is not a very attractive prospect for employees who enjoy good dental health. Many of these people hardly use their insurance for anything apart from the routine check-ups and cleanings.
Under such circumstances family dental insurance companies saw a high percentage of employees opting out of their dental plans altogether. This is not a good precedent at all. One it means more people are falling out of dental health network. Only recently studies have proven that good oral health means could overall health. Which could directly result in increased savings on the medical bills.
Second factor, is that only high-risk patients opting for the family dental insurance increases the costs remain in the plan and also for the insurers. Not attractive for either.
To make the dental plans more attractive for the group of people dropping out the insurers are allowing members to roll over their unused maximum treatment limits to next year. Suppose your annual limit is $1200 dollars and you use say 500 dollars of this amount then you can roll over a percentage of this remaining 700 dollars to the next year. Some plans cap the number of years you can rollover this annual limit.
Also, you are required to make atleast one visit to the dentist every year for this roll over to take effect. According to the family dental insurance companies they want members to take advantage of the preventive care package to keep their gums healthy and prevent tooth decay.
Also, many screening tests and dental implants are also being covered under the family dental insurance to try to keep the members from dropping out.
