Category: Jobs, Work, Careers
The lifespan of my time at Cope Associates, just about 4 1/2 years.
I feel used.
The Higher-Ups had said we'd all weather the storm together. We were in a more stable portion of the sector. It'd be lean but we could get through it.
Then we didn't get the jobs we'd shot for. 2nd place is still Loser-#1. Add in the jobs that are still on hold in January because of spending freezing and you have a surefire recipe for disaster.
Me, another production-level Chris, and a project-manager Ty got "laid off" yesterday. I suppose it's because we can't bring in as much work as others, directly and that with the experience the 3 of us have we can probably get jobs faster than others.
Whatever.
I suppose it hurt so much because it's the first job I got wherein I could use my degree. There is hurt in there because the Higher-Ups weren't honest with us. Knowing up front that layoffs would be imminent should we not garner new work would have been refreshing and alert us to the possibility that this could happen.
There's also alot of anger.
At myself for being naive enough to believe them. At them for tossing me away. At the world in general for being so f'd up. *that's a constant and nothing new*
They'll miss our presence eventually. But as someone who'd hoped to be a "settle into one job and that's it" kind of person, I'll miss our presence NOW.

I was thinking... (I know rare right?) Mimes are essentially a French version of Ninjas, maybe. Only less cool.

Current mood: drained
So, I got sick recently (the Plague abounds this time of year) and the only thing that really helps me keep it at bay is a plethora of hot beverages. Apple Cider, Cocoa, and Honey-Lemonade to be precise. And so, I thought to myself, "Hey, the honey-lemonade seems to do the best job.. why don't I find a way to make some sort of honey-candy to munch on. It might do the trick as well!"
On to the GOOGLE search I went until I found this:Holiday Honey Caramels Description Drop one into a cup of hot coffee or tea, or enjoy this delicious treat on its own.
Ingredients - 1 cup butter (no substitutions)
- 2 cups honey
- 2 cups whipping cream
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Finely chopped almonds and/or coconut (toasted or untoasted), optional
Preparation Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 50 minutes Line bottom and sides of 9-inch square pan with plastic wrap; set aside. Melt butter in medium-sized heavy saucepan over medium-high heat. Add honey, cream and brown sugar; mix well. Cook over medium-high heat until mixture comes to boil, stirring frequently. Reduce heat to medium and continue boiling, stirring frequently, until candy thermometer registers 250°F to 255°F, about 45 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla; pour into prepared pan. Let cool completely in refrigerator before cutting into individual caramels with very sharp knife. Roll in chopped nuts or coconut, if desired, and wrap each individually in clear plastic wrap. Store, tightly wrapped, in refrigerator up to 1 month. (Caramels will be soft at room temperature and firm if kept chilled.) There are many people who've posted the same thing, some saying that it's a variation on the one off of Honey.com but they're all the same. and none of them know how to write a proper recipe for someone that's never made candy before. This recipe is harder than it looks (but thankfully took less time than they said it would! Yay!)Melting the butter, no prob. Adding the rest of the base, piece of cake. (Here comes the tricky part.) They say to turn down the heat next once the mixture starts boiling. Thankfully, I've dealt with cooking milk products and know to have a pot that can hold twice as much or more than what you're trying to hold.
The way this recipe should have read is: Turn the heat down to medium-low and take the pot mostly off of the heat, still stirring continuously. Gradually (in about 7-10 min increments) replace the saucepan over the burner. When you can keep the pan over the heat for a full increment, turn the heat up a little and do this burner-to-candy-heat dance until you've reached medium heat. Then just stir and wait til the thermometer hits 252°F.
For those of you who then think, "I'll just turn off the heat and put the vanilla extract in," think again. That baby will bubble up faster than Vesuvius after a meal of Mexican re-fried beans. And don't use plastic wrap to line the pan. It just melts and sticks to your pan. Use parchment paper. Or wax paper.
After all is said and done, I think that the candies turned out well enough. Not that I'll be doing anymore anytime soon.
I noticed, while in Aquarium, that I'd been treating my pond fish with the wrong medication. Melafix apparently looks and smells exactly like Pimafix only Melafix treats primarily bacteria infections while Pimafix treats the fungal items that I need fixed. I have now changed the treatments to the Pimafix... though I've read recently that it may not treat what I have... There's like a 50-50 shot depending on species of infection...
Here's to hoping for no fish loss.
Also, I've gotten another tank. This one is small and only to satisfy my almost insatiable need to watch fish while pondering a TV program. I've currently got too many fish in there now (not that I think all of them will live). A panda cory named Ling-ling, a couple of red dwarf gouramis named Blood and Sunset, a goldfish named Yamaka (he'll move out to the pond when it's warmer if he lives), a Chinese algae eater, and six assorted, painted zebra danios. They were sold as "painted tetras" but I know the difference between a tetra and a danio.
But here's my current little spot of zen:

And with most of the fishies:

I figured out what Baby found so interesting that she had to hindleg-stand to gaze out the window. What looks like an oriole decided to commit seppuku against the greenhouse wall. This is likely not but the first of the bird related casualties.
Speaking of casualties, both Boo II and Marmelade have frozen. Lemonaide is still alive (having jumped down the waterfall to hang with my koi and mosquitofish). Most of the ice melted today, first, from the upper tank then from the lower. Since the forecast is supposed to warm up, I don't think I'll have any other large fish casualties. I think I may have lost most of the mosquitofish... I don't belive they went far enough under the water to keep from freezing...
Spring cleaning shall be interesting indeed...

I finally got PaintBrushes to hold still long enough for me to see that she as well has a bit of growth on her tail. As a wonderfull surprise, Black Hole Sun (a Karasu or "crow" koi) is still alive and doing well in the upper fish tank. I can't find where Lemonaide has gotten to...
The SEC is doing well this bowl season thus far (except for Arkansas... and I can't figure out whether or not I'm happy about that...) maybe able to go 5-1 so far if TN can hold on for the last 10min...

Current mood: lethargic
...lovely Holidays...
I actually DO love the Holidays. But mine are nearly over.
I hope everyone's Holidays have been jolly, warm, and full of laughter. Some I know have had a good one 'cause you've said so on your blogs.
I've gotten to go down to GA to see my grandparents (who were telling my parents that they expect to see evidence of my continued existence or there would be consequences ). One cousin I got to see and another (that I'd not even heard from for months) called to play catch-up. My parents are remaining cool with the live-in situation and my one-day-eventually in-laws like me. Bonus. Both of my bros were able to visit and it just be us for a little bit. Like it used to be.
Mike got me an iPod touch (which I realized today, I've left the all-purpose cord that goes with it plugged into mom's cpu 5 hours away in GA... DOH!!!) and I simply love it. I got him a 360 which he's currently playing the OrangeBox. *note to the public* Portal is very VERY fun. You must play it. It will blow your mind.
I figured out yesterday that there is some sort of fin rot or fungal growth on some more of my fish. *sigh* I've started treatment on them and will dose for longer than the 1wk suggestion when I found out that Goldschlager had mouth rot. Tequila has several growths now and I think that I found one on Fool's Gold and I know I saw one on Greenback II. Nothing seen on Comet, Steppingstones, Hennessey, Sake, Red Stripe, Jack Daniels, Yeungling, Kisses, Domino, Draco, or Bippity and Boppity but Boo II has some growths. PaintBrush won't stay still long enough for me to be able to tell one way or the other. I don't believe my un-named shubunkin have any growths (one is yellowy and will probably be Lemonaide and the other is orangey and will likely be Marmelade) I found the nearly rotted bodies of one of my Plecos... but have seen both of the Catfish recently, so there will be hope for next season.
The rain recently has kept the pond well filled. I'm glad that I don't have run-off or water from the eaves to deal with. With all the plants cropped back and dormant the pond looks so... dead... It's too cold to even spend much time doing the autumn/winter upkeep. Thankfully I haven't had to plug in the heater I bought (60 bucks!) because of the warm days bringing the water back up to 45+.
Another note to all y'all out there: When you buy pressure treated lumber and don't get around to using it right after you've brought it home, don't leave it in your hermetically sealed vehicle. Or if you do, leave the back windows cracked open a smidge. If you don't you'll end up having to dry out the condensation from the interior of all your windows where the wood has dried itself to the proper density. I knew this before but forgot it since non-pressure treated lumber is dried more thoroughly, stored in a dry place, and doesn't do this.
Malcolm (the stray I've adopted) is extremely observant and smart. He's also VERY smelly and whiney. Which in a big dog is a triple uh-oh. He has on many occasions now, un-barricaded the greenhouse door, unlocked said door (Which you can't just open by leaning hard on the latch. I tried and failed miserably...), and then opened it and roamed the back yard quite contentedly. He doesn't roam far cause he knows where the food is. Lily Baby, however, has found a playmate from down the street (who also is an escape artist) to go roaming with. I think I've impressed upon him how angry his escape act makes me so he doesn't really try it now. It helps that I've made it harder for him to tip things over. For his morning bark/whine/pay-attention-to-me-NOW session I've bought him a shock-collar. For those of you saying "How inhumane!" Malcolm is a D-O-G. Plus I tried it out on myself first. Even with all the HIGHLY conductive metal I wear on a regular basis, the shock doesn't hurt. Doesn't feel quite pleasant and is highly disturbing but doesn't hurt. Malcolm, smart boy that he is, figured out what caused the shock and what level of vocalization is allowed. Whining doesn't set it off. LOUD whining doesn't set it off. Muttering and growling don't either. Barking and howling louder than what he usually mutters at will set it off. According to the label it gets stronger the longer the unwanted barking continues.
He's smart enough to know to be quiet now. If the quiet continues, the collar will be removed. PETA can deal with his neediness themselves if they have a problem with it.
I like my sleep.

Current mood: chipper
Category: Goals, Plans, Hopes
I have now figured out that the "leak" in my pond only occurs after I've cleaned out the mechanical bio-filter. After about 6hrs the pond will start draining. This is due to the newly aroused sediments being focibly removed from the water by the foam being placed back into the largest area of flow and then being completely filled by red clay. *sigh*
So, now I'm not quite settled with my pond and want to do some rearranging. I think next spring, I'm going to take out my natural bio-filter so I can re-level it and make it a little deeper. Then I'm going to move the yew that I have placed at the top of the pond and make that area a natural bog that cascades into the natural bio-filter and replant my vareigated cattail there (seeing as it doesn't like the shubunkin tank...) along with my corkscrew rush (which apparently doesn't like the depth it's at) as long with a couple of things I'll buy as they come available.
I got my frontyard planter almost completely planted after another 60 or so worth of plants. There is only a little to do on it left. I need to figure out some more perrineals to put in and to finish leveling out the back end of the wall. Today, along with as much football I can tolerate (which as you know is quite a bit), I'm going to stake out some dimensions for a deck that I intend to do so Mike can grill out more often (mmmmmm... bbq... *drool*) and the patio that I need to flesh out and might work on over the winter. Even if I can't plant anything (as only Home Despot carries even a few perrineals) I can get the planting beds and paths done. And regardless of what Mike thinks, I do have an overall plan.
They just don't work if I don't have real dimensions to work with. Go figure.
In other news, Lily baby is doing great. Especially since I outfitted Kit-Kat's kennel so she can stay inside off a tether. Kit-Kat is now a happy 14.5lb kitty. Mike's cat, Javert, is mortally afraid of Baby and refuses to approach her even with a locked cage between them. And he's been taking his anger out on me (as the owner of the "monster") by using any stack of clothes of mine he can get to as a replacement litterbox. Before you say he's not being spiteful, Mike tried to forcibly show him that Baby wasn't going to get him and the next day he emptied his bladder repeatedly on Mike's pillow and side of the bed. Not a drop on my clothes and/or side of the bed. It's an old cat. And he's very crotchety. Very.
And I bought one last koi, a yellow boddied one with a couple of black flecks and a whitish head. It's name is Yeungling. And if you've never tried the beer, I say it's pretty good.

Category: Pets and Animals
I just found out yesterday from someone else who has koi that hers actually eat snails. I'd had my suspicions but no one else was saying anything about it... My snails are so reclusive that the only reason I knew that a couple had died/been eaten because I'd found empty shells when cleaning the pond floor.
Also yesterday, I... indulged... in buying more koi. Yes, I have to stop now.
So, to go with: Fool's Gold - Yamabuki Hariwake? Yamabuki Ogon? Comet - Orenji Ogon Paint Brush - Ai Goromo Greenback II - Butterfly Hajiro Stepping Stones - Aka Bekko Red Stripe (hooray beer!) - Sandan Kohaku and Goldschlager - kawarimono of some sort likely a Kin Matsuba
We have as new comers: Jack Daniels - Shiro Bekko (the white and black one) Sake - Tancho Showa (the one with the red dot)

Hennessy - Budo Goromo (the red, white and black one) and Tequila - Nezu Ogon (also called "helmet head" the grey one)

That is 11 koi. That is like the cap on
