I had such fun this weekend.

The groovy folks of Philby Fest on Saturday soothed my soul.   Sunday, the music continued for me as I went to see Don play with Pam & The SG's up at the balloon festival in Auburn, then later stopped into Pepper's jam on our way home.

A list:

I saw two HOT sets by Pam Baker & The SG's.  They were smokin'!!

I got to play two HOT Ice Waters Band sets... I.C. took a left turn at Bray's last night and I'm not sure if he ever came back, but that was okay by me. because I was skipping down a chocolate and icing covered path, sweet.

I got to play a set with the charming TRAILER TRASH at Philby Fest... broken strings flying just past my face, beer cans flowing all over the place..  What a rocking ship of Fools!  I loved it, and I love Paul & Ellen.

I got to see THE INTERGALACTIC YURT BAND perform!!   Those guys and gals are the greatest.. Another charming band.  I'm smitten.

I got to try out Karen's bass, who I call Blondie, at the late night jam session (part 1).  Thanks Karen, that was worth a shot.  Luckily, their were TWO other double bassers playing at the same time!

And Ronda was it?  Of Kevin and Ronda of Peaks Island?  HOLY SHIT what a singer! I've got to look them up on myspace and go see them play in Portland..

Last night I got to borrow Gerry's (or is it Jerry?), of the Underachievers band, wicked cool big gibson type guitar.  It's fun to break out of Strat comfort zone now and then!  Thanks Gerry/Jerry very much.

And watching Pepper and Krister play those two Hungarian Rock songs with the adorable Hungarian camp kids?   Well that was the perfect capper for a delightful weekend.

(jess, i wish you could have seen that!)

It was my fourth year attending the North Atlantic Blues Festival event, tagging along with my boyfriend who plays in one of the club crawl bands.  We camped at Camden Hills State Park, and I'm still a lousy camper, but we made the best of it, despite coming back to the site on Saturday night in the middle of a driving rain storm.

I still have yet to attend the main concert, but I hear plenty of it from the harbor side, where I like to hang out quietly, away from the big crowds.  I'm not a big fan of crowds.

Highlights:
1.  Friday night's "Lazyman's Lobster" meal at the Tradewinds Hotel.
2.  Getting scooped up by Deb, Paul and Tommy Hines to crawl the streets with them on Friday.
3.  Walking in on The Eric Green Party just as they were playing "Hot All Night," a song I have a hard time getting out of my brain.  What a great fucking band.  Living up to the swamp rock, for sure.
4.  Getting a sideways hug from rock star Tommy O' as he was harping it up with EGP.
5.  Meeting and having a brief conversation with a guy named Mark, who had just come back from Amsterdam.  He was friends with EGP, and had seen them a bunch.
6.  Hanging and chatting with Jessica at the Time Out, and meeting her BFF Sarah "Boz", and seeing the lovely Lynn Ann there, too.
7.  Dancing badly with Paul Sidelinger for the last song of the night at Pam Baker's set.  We were not pretty, but we were laughing!
8. Giggling over Saturday night's dinner, while we listened to the very long introduction of Bobby Rush.  "Bobbeeeeee RUSH!, repeated about 35 times.."  (Uh, who was that again?  Bobbeeeeee RUSH!!)
9.  Having my dinner paid for by a strange, but kind man who was sitting at the next table from us.  He insisted, I don't know why, but that was nice.
10.  Running into Andy Oliver!  Guitar player with The Sensations.  He's a peach.
11.  Getting a coffee latte at the funky coffee shop on Saturday night (the kids working there reminded me of myself when I worked at a funky coffee shop in my 20's.  Art punk kids wearing "Bauhaus" tees and shit.  Cuteness).
12.  Standing incognito by the wall and listening to some of the great Bonnie Edwards and her band, swinging away.
13.  Sitting in the car and listening to Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earl.
14.  Listening to Indian Raga on the radio at midnight, just when the rains broke from the skies.
15. Waking up Sunday morning at a muddy campsite but sunshine overhead.

Friday, June 12, 2009Pisces (Feb 19 - Mar 20)It doesn't much matter which distant galaxies you are visiting in your daydreams today. As far-flung as your fantasies may take you, the real focus now is on what you do and not on what you think. Choose a direct course of action that will lead you to your desired destination. Make a simple map and then follow it with unwavering intention.

Category: Writing and Poetry

It's been a long time for me blogging here, but I've got some time before I head into work and I'm feeling really melancholy right now, so I thought I'd post this poem I found in the May 18, 2009 New Yorker magazine.

For about 10 years now, I've been snubbing my nose at poetry.  I wasn't always this way, I used to love it.  But I've become so damn crusty and impatient that I haven't let poetry in for a while.  I just kept saying to myself, I don't get it!  What's the point?  Just being very pragmatic about it all.

Then the other day I stumbled across this poem, and for some reason, it has stuck with me.  So I thought I'd share it with this blog.  I hope you can feel what I feel when you read this for yourself.

DELPHINIUMS IN A WINDOW BOX

Every sunrise, even strangers' eyes.

Not necessarily swans, even crows,

even the evening fusillade of bats.

That place where the creek goes underground,

how many weeks before I see you again?

Stacks of books, every page, characters'

rages and poets' strange contraptions

of syntax and song, every song

even when there isn't one.

Every thistle, splinter, butterfly

over the drainage ditches. Every stray.

Did you see the meteor shower?

Did it feel like something swallowed?

Every question, conversation

even with almost nothing, cricket, cloud,

because of you I'm talking to crickets, clouds,

confiding in a cat.  Everyone says,

Come to your senses, and I do, of you.

Every touch electric, every taste you,

every smell, even burning sugar, every

cry and laugh.  Toothpicked samples

at the farmers' market, every melon,

plum, I come undone, undone.

--Dean Young

Gawd.  Isn't it just splendid?  I wish right now I was in a poetry class so I could be in a discussion about this poem.   The first line that really grabs me is "fusillade of bats."  But the whole thing is damn brilliant, and what KILLS me is I can't even really SAY WHY for sure!  Oy.

PDiddy just cracks me up!! I just can't hate the guy. He works his ass off and I've got respect for him.. but man his ego is as big as the world! He's got a camera following him around about 89 percent of his life. I don't know, I just can't wrap my head around him. Watch this, if you dare.

Sorry to take up 5 minutes of your time! Ha . :)

The word bake is just so cool on so many levels. Ha.

It's amazing how satisfied you can feel after eating a handful or two of raw almonds.

Or, sharp cheddar or havarti dill cheese on Triscuit crackers, for that matter.

Between the veggies from the garden all summer, and working in the produce field, the fridge is always overflowing with fruits and vegetables. That's a good thing.

Tomatoes sit on the windowsill in the kitchen, potatoes go directly into the bread box, out of the light.

One can never have enough lemons and onions on hand.

I've made homemade chicken noodle soup about six times this winter. Probably one of the most nourishing and rejuvenating meals there is.

I wish I could say I was a vegan, but I do enjoy eating meat. However, it's never the main focus of my meals... the sides are just as important to me. I eat fish as much as possible, and anything pasta makes me weak in the knees!

"Chicken Said" (pronounced "sa-eed")
(A life saving recipe taught to me by my friend Said Marmoucha.)

1. Par cook (bake or fry) some chicken parts, maybe 4 legs and 4 thighs, or mix it up any which way. A whole chicken if you want.
2. Add the partially cooked chicken to a deep stove top pan that uses a lid.
3. Layer the chicken with a bunch of quartered & peeled potatoes, about a pound of big chunks of peeled carrots, four or five quartered big chunks of onion, and one or two washed and quartered lemons (leave the peel on!)
4. Season the layers with paparika, black pepper and a cup or more of chopped fresh parsley (or cilantro).
5. Add a cup of water, a cup or more of wine (red or white, whatever).
6. Simmer on real low for a couple or few hours with the lid on. Doesn't need stirring.
7. Add a jar of green pimento olives about 20 minutes before serving.
8. Scoop it into a big bowl and serve with a big fluffy loaf of Italian bread.
9. Eat with your hands, Moroccan style if you dare!
10. Save the leftovers and reheat a night or two later, even better!

Yum.

I found this add on Craig's List this morning. A musician's mentoring program. Seems fishy to me. Your thoughts?
