Volunteer at the Vancouver International Fringe Festival 2008!

Apply Online today at www.vancouverfringe.com or call 604-338-4356

The Vancouver International Fringe Festival offers up an eclectic mix of theatre over 11 days on Granville Island and across Vancouver.  This year our festival runs from Sept 3-14th.  Over 400 performances by 68 different groups make the Fringe one of Vancouver's most popular & diverse theatre festivals. Our mandate is to provide "theatre for everyone" and we do this by fostering an environment that is accessible to both performers and audiences alike. We choose performers by lottery, offering them full artistic freedom and we return 100% of the box office proceeds to them. As a result Fringe theatre is an adventure in theatre-going with performances ranging from the bizarre to the sublime and everything in between.

Volunteers are at the heart of the Festival!  Because all box office proceeds are returned directly to the artists, the Fringe wouldn't be possible without the effort and commitment of our talented team of volunteers.  Each year, over 500 people from all walks of life take on a variety of roles from front-of-house activities to working behind the scenes to ensure the successful run of the festival. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to meet new people, develop new skills, and become a part of a thriving theatre community.  Best of all, you get to see great shows for free!

Positions Available:  Pre/Post Festival Crew to build & strike venues, Hosts to billet performers, Crew Chiefs & Venue Captains to supervise volunteers at a variety of theatre venues, Distribution teams to distribute posters & programs, Front of House Crew to sell tickets & act as ushers, bussers and security for our popular Fringe Club and much more!

Hey Everyone!

I am still collecting submissions for the art show happening this Saturday. It is in conjunction with the Green Mountain PreParty at the Black Door. It will be a blast. There will be live music, a spanking booth, raffle, and a 50/50. All mediums of art that are wall-hangable are encouraged. There will be a live music component if you want to put up some of your live band shots.

The monies raised will be split 50/50 between the artist and the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Society. So artists will get 50% of their selling price.

Set up will probably be on Saturday afternoon.

Let me know if you want to be a part of this. Please pass it on to anyone you know that might be interested.

Thanks!

First things first:

The Petri Dish is selling again on Etsy! The website is www.divesin.etsy.com. I am listing new things everyday. There is a mix of new items, some items that were sold when The Petri Dish was open on Main Street, and a section of cool vintage finds and supplies. Lots of greeting cards.

If you are a Vancouverite and see something on Etsy that you would like to purchase we can make arrangements so that you don't have to pay for shipping. Just email or convo me. I can leave your purchase at Hot Box on Main and Broadway and you can pick it up during their business hours.

Number three:
Keep an eye out for the Blue Bubblegum Jones Soda bottle with my photo on it. It is a cute photo of my brother from quite a few years ago. I sent in a bunch of images and I am supprised they chose the one they did, because it is kind of hard to make out what it is exactly, but that is the one they liked. He is looking into the camera, holding up the side of his violin.

Next, a call for art:

I am helping to organize a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis. A buddy of mine, James Wood, is the singer for a band, The Hotel Lobbyists, and his fiance has Cystic Fibrosis. He is organizing two events, one in Vancouver, and one in Naniamo, to raise some money for the cause and have some fun, too. The event in Vancouver is at the Black Door on June 14th and will be hosting a plethora of bands including No Horses, The Stumbler's Inn, Shilo Lindsey, The Smokes and more! There will also be a raffle and a spanking booth!

I am responsible for putting together the art show portion. The artists will receive 50% of the sales. Anyone that is interested please email me (preferably with a picture of the item(s) that you would like to donate). I am not exactly going to jury it, but I want to make a cohesive, nice looking show so I will be selecting pieces that I think will fit visually together.

I am also going to have a wall specifially for live band photos. If you have any that you would like to show, please email  the samples to me.

If you have a store and/or make a product that you would like to donate to the raffle that would also be so wonderful. Gift certificates, crafts, music cds etc etc. The more variety the better. I can arrange to pick up your donations. Thanks so much in advance.

That's all for now. Email me with any questions, concerns. I hope to hear from y'all real soon.

Nov 28, 2007 - The Vancouver Craft Mafia is SO happy to present to you our First Ever Holiday Craft Sale! Shop for the holidays from a selection of jewellery, handbags, t-shirts, greeting cards, sweater scarves, journals, DIY DVD's and more!

Entry by donation at the door and a chance to win a raffle worth over $250. Saturday, December 8 from 12pm - 6pm. At BLIM 197 East 17th Ave at Main Street.

The Vancouver Craft Mafia is a collection of independent business owners who share a love for craft, fashion, style, art and have an entrepreneurial spirit. Each member of the VCM must own and operate an established business that represents the DIY spirit and brings their own individual talents to the group.

The Vancouver Craft Mafia Members are:

Jackie Dives spent two years owning and operating the Petri Dish, a store located on Main Street in Vancouver and is now wholesaling her greeting cards and working on a line of sweater scarves and other accessories made from reclaimed materials. Her cards can be viewed online at www.divesin.etsy.com and www.thepetridish.ca.

Lia Hood started sewing out of pure necessity. She endured a year long search for modern culottes, dragged a book bag home by its broken strap, and stitched up a hole in her winter coat after a near fatal piggy back disaster. Anyone can see that Lia's designs have since pushed beyond this desperation. Using recycled vintage household textiles, each item is lovingly handmade. www.goodmorning-morning.com

Wendy Russell has been crafting as long as she can remember. Her mom taught her to reduce, reuse and recycle back in the 70's before it was the 'in' thing to do, and everything crafty she creates tends to have a 'green' edge to it. Mod & Mod Kids are fun "how-to-craft" instructional DVDs that Wendy wrote, produced and hosts, and the DVDs offer up a ton of great ideas to keep the kids & teens busy for hours! She is now the host of HGTV Canada's new series "She's Crafty". www.wendyrussell.com  www.hgtv.ca

In 2004 Mel Taylor launched Demo Derby Design with her husband and partner in craft, Adam. Her specialties include knitting, screen-printing, and web design. Her work has been featured in N.E.E.T. magazine, IdN magazine and the 'here gallery' in the UK. Demo Derby's products range from hand-knit scarves, hats, cat toys, buttons and fridge magnets as well as silk-screened pin cushions, t-shirts, tote bags, appliqués and stationery. All items are handmade by Mel and Adam in Vancouver, BC.

Denise Wilson launched Patina Designs from a box of reclaimed leather. Her playful, buttery soft leather accessories are accented with hand silk-screened images. Soon to follow was Bronsino Designs for Living, a collaboration between Denise and her husband, Tito Hinojosa. The finely crafted handbags, journals and accessories from the Bronsino collection are classically inspired works of art produced in very limited numbers.

Toodlebunny Designs is a unique, handcrafted jewellery collection by Trudy Wynans. Clean lines and bold simplicity are combined with whimsical charms creating modern adornments. Featuring 14k gold fill and sterling silver, her asymmetrical designs embody natural elements of bone, wood, horn and semiprecious stones. She draws her inspiration from nature's flora and fauna, evidenced by the use of birds, leaves and tusks that have become signatures of her designs. www.toodlebunny.com

Hello Gremlins and Ghouls!

I just worked on a film over the weekend that was part of the BLOODSHOTS 48 HOUR HORROR FILMMAKING CHALLENGE. I did Set Dec, Camera Assist and any other odd jobs that needed doing.  Dave, my boyfriend, wrote and produced the film. We pulled an 18 hour production and filming stretch from 7pm on Friday night to 1pm on Saturday afternoon. It was madness, as the film will demonstrate!

As part of the contest, each team is assigned a horror sub-genre, a murder weapon, a prop, and line of dialogue.  Here's what we were given:

Sub-genre: Backwoods
Weapon: Paper
Prop: Boardgame
Line: "The Monkees are better than the Beatles"

The result was our film "CABIN OF TERROR":

"In the style of the early nineties video board game "Nightmare", our host, the Gatekeeper, leads the viewer through his twisted "Cabin of Terror". You, the game player, must bet on the fates of three not-so-lucky female contestants, while obeying the Gatekeeper's every command on this VHS dubbed in Hell."

Please check it out here:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=uAqwlur0e_A

or on the Bloodshots Canada MySpace site:
(fourth video from the top)
http://myspace.com/bloodshotscanada

If you like it, please cast a vote for us as the best film of Bloodshots 2007,
by emailing bigsmashproductions@gmail.com with the message - "I vote for "Cabin of Terror" as the best film of Bloodshots Canada 2007".

I'd really appreciate it if you help us win this thing by voting!
The winner of the jury prize (issued this Wednesday, at a screening at the Anza Club) and the winner of the audience/online vote, will go on to be screened for JOE DANTE who directed such awesome movies as Gremlins and The 'Burbs, and he will choose the final winner.

Please pass it on to anyone you think might be into this!!!
Votes must be cast by Friday October 26th at 7pm.

Sweet!
