Batton here to let you know that this Saturday (December 15), at Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles, will see the launch of the newest small press minicon: Super*MARKET L.A. Exhibit A Press will have a table at the show, which is the first of quarterly events to be held at Meltdown Comics's Sunset Blvd. store. Jackie and I will have Supernatural Law comics and trades on hand, of course (but ask me about my upcoming Archie Comics mini series!). Among the other exhibitors at the one-day show are Buenaventura Press, Steve Weissman, Johnny Ryan, Jordan Crane, and Sammy Harkham. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The address is 7522 Sunset Blvd. Super*MARKET promises to be a new comics tradition, so come by for the inaugural installment!

Batton here: This Sunday, November 25, The Comic Bug, a Los Angeles-area store is celebrating its grand reopening (following a fire that destroyed the previous store) at its new location in Manhattan Beach by sponsoring a screening of Chris Brandt's documentary Independents: A Documentary Guide for the Creative Spirit. I'll be signing at the event, along with Wendy Pini and Wellman. Festivities begin at 4:00 p.m., and the screening is at 5:00. The Comic Bug is at 807 1/2 Manhattan Beach Blvd (three miles from the Rosecrans exit off the 405) in Manhattan Beach, CA. Hope to see you there!

Jackie and I have returned from that Salt Lake City conference on comics I mentioned in the previous post and it was great. Done under the auspices of the City Library and Nightflight Comics, it was an all-day event covering comics as art, entertainment and education. A real treat was an unannounced appearance and participation by comics writer/playwright Steve Seagle. The event was such a success, plans are underway for next year's seminar. Can't wait!

Batton here: This week, on November 10: Both I and lovely wife Jackie will be presenting programs on comics at a special event at the Salt Lake City Library in Salt Lake City, UT. It is geared toward introducing comics and graphic novels to the general public. Also appearing are Bongo Comics' Bill Morrison, academic Robyn Hill, DC Comics editor Joan Hilty, award-winning comics writer Bill Willingham (Vertigo's Fables), and Archie Comics artist Bill Galvan. This will be a terrific event in a fabulous library and well worth your time. If you are in the area, please stop by, chat about comics and get free sketches! It's sure to be a fun time and a memorable one!

Batton here: New York's Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA), opened it's new exhibit last week: "Things That Go Bump in the Night" and it's a real Halloween treat for me: Supernatural Law is included in the show!

You can see my original art featuring Wolff & Byrd and their monstrous clientele on display along with the works of many comic book greats depicting legendary horror characters. According to MoCCA's official announcement, the exhibit will feature artwork from all aspects of the medium, including cartoon panels, comic strips, comic book pages, and animation art from artists such as Gene Colan, Dick Giordano, Tania del Rio, Michael Mignola, Paolo Rivera, Mike Royer, Joe Staton, Mike Vosburg, Gahan Wilson, and many others.

MoCCA is located at 594 Broadway, Suite 401 between Prince and Houston Streets. Hours are Friday through Monday from noon to five. Admission is only $5. Members are free. And a fundraising reception and masquerade party, which coincides with MoCCA's 6th anniversary will be held on Saturday October 27th at the museum. Pretty neat, eh? A tip of the barrister's wig to curators Bill Roundy, Darlene Elkanick, Jared Gniewek and MoCCA Executive Director Matt Murray for making it all possible. By the way, you might want to join MoCCA and support a terrific showcase for comic art and animation. in addition to exhibiting original comic art, MoCCA has signings, as well as lectures and programs pertaining to the medium. Regardless, check out the show and spend a day to see the things that go bump in the night!

Batton and Jackie will be putting in an early Halloween appearance at Time Warp Comics . . . their first ever in Colorado! Batton will be signing Supernatural Law trades and comics as well as issues of Simpsons Super Spectacular featuring his "Radioactive Man" stories. The signing is on Saturday, Oct. 13th and will begin at around 1:00 PM. Time Warp recently moved to their bigger and better digs at 3105 28th Street (303-443-4500). So please check it out and stop by and say hello. If you want to talk about old horror movies and Steve Ditko comics, all the better!

Batton here: Yikes- the San Diego Comic-Con doesn't officially start until Thursday—yet I feel like it's been going on for a month now! We've planned for this show for a while. Jackie and I look forward to releasing the new Supernatural Law issue, my "tell-all" about Hollywood. The title says it all: "Wolff & Byrd: The Movie". Plus Graphitti Designs will use the show to debut not one, but two new Supernatural Law T-shirts, one featuring Wolff & Byrd (with one of their clients) and the "World's Greatest Secretary" herself, Mavis (available at our booth, of course!). Plus we'll have a special publication, exclusive to the Comic-Con and available only from us. What is it? Find out when you stop by booth 1909 (Exhibit A Press, what else?). We're the corner booth, right next to the effervescent Rich Koslowski and Rich Henn with Eric Shanower's Age of Bronze off to the side of us. Mention this blog entry, and you just might get a freebie.

By the way, even though the con officially starts Thursday, it unofficially gets underway on Preview Night, Wednesday at 6. Yikes-- that's tonight! I gotta go set up. Please come by the booth and say hello. I hope to see you!

Batton here: If you're a fan of the "Silver Age", DC Comics in particular, you might want to check out the latest issue of Simpsons Super-Spectacular (Number 5), published by Bongo Comics. There's a fun Bill Finger pastiche by Mike Barr and James Lloyd that'll take you back to the more innocent days of a certain Dynamic Duo. And the issue also contains a Radioactive Man story written by me, and drawn by comics great Ramona Fradon. Any characters that resemble Metamorpho, Simon Stagg, Sapphire, and Java (characters Ramona designed and drew back in the day) is purely coincidental . . . or maybe intended for parody! It was a real treat to learn that she agreed to draw this story. I've been a fan of Ramona since her Aquaman days ( I really appreciated the shout-out she got on HBO's Entourage!), and enjoyed seeing her fluid cartooning every day, when she drew the Brenda Starr newspaper strip.

Ramona Fradon will be attending Comic Con International in San Diego next week. I can't wait to meet her. I intend to tell her how wonderful her work has been and continues to be . . . and I know I'll be just be one of the many with the same plan!
