After years of trying the myspace thing, I am moving my blog to wordpress. I will keep this site open, and may post to it, but even less frequently than I do now. I will, however, endeavor to post more regularly to the wordpress site. Please visit http://762rifleman.wordpress.com/ to see my latest essays.
Thanks.
Oh, one more thing. Feel free to comment, for good or ill. I am getting quite a few hits on my old riflery tutorials, but no feedback. It makes me wonder if they need improvement, but can't know for sure.

In recent weeks, numerous documents involving the rise of so-called "right-wing extremism" have leaked from Fusion Centers around the country. These Fusion Centers represent cooperative efforts to share intelligence between the Department of Homeland Security and state and local law enforcement agencies. Media outlets across the nation have confirmed the veracity of these documents. They paint a grim picture. Now that they've labeled their enemies, what does Janet Napolitano's Department of Homeland Security intend to do with them? Here is one possibility:Combining "indefinite detention" with those policies of the Napolitano DHS toward "right wing extremists" is a frightening proposition.
Regarding
the other doublespeak of his speech, all I have to say is "Oceania is
at war with Eurasia, Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia."
If I were as two-faced as him, I would wear the other one.

As some of you may recall during the election campaign Obama said that
the Republican party clung to our guns and religion, blah blah blah.
Now, his own DHS and FBI have released papers that define just how
serious a threat they perceive the "right wing" conservatives to be.
They have detailed just how dangerous people that own firearms, stock
pile ammo (whether it is because of the shortage that is going on and
they want reserves to continue to practice their sport or to fend off
the upcoming zombie apocalypse) and do not agree with their politics
actually are. They are afraid that anyone who does not agree with their
special brand of socialism is going to flock to the white supremacist
groups. Why the white groups I don’t quite know except that maybe it's
because he is black and they have to play the race card in everything.
But it is interesting that they don't say just the whites will make the
move, they are very general.
But most importantly, they now view
returning vets as an even bigger threat to the security of their
version of what they would like the United States to be. First Obama
tried telling vets “Thanks for doing your job overseas but since you
got hurt you have to use your own insurance to get medical care for
your injuries sustained in combat. After all we have all these more
deserving welfare recipients and illegal aliens that need the treatment
that YOU paid for with YOUR taxes.” That did not work out so well. Then
they began to pay attention to what these young men were doing over
there. They became extremely efficient at killing people and finding
them where they were hiding, in order to kill them. One of the things
that returning vets have noticed is the utter distain, contempt and
hatred that Obama and his ilk view veterans with. Our troops went
overseas because our country decided that we need to remove a dictator
from power and free those people. We became immersed in a war with
Islamic fundamentalists that fear freedom and people who are allowed to
have hope and make their own decisions. So we fought them too, and did
quite well at giving the people of Iraq and Afghanistan freedom to
choose their own destiny and exercise basic human rights. Then they
came home to the country that Obama is trying his hardest to destroy.
Mainly by attacking the rights the veterans fought to give to the Iraqi
and Afghani people. Yep, we fought to give freedom to them and come
home to find Obama trying to take tit from us. So what exactly makes
him different from other dictators, the fact he has yet to use force to
seize those rights and wrench them away from the populace? The
administration is working hard to make sure that they have the
programs, laws, people and methods to do so. And now these same vets
have ended up on a DHS and FBI memo listed as possible threats to the
security of the United States. Wrong! They, we, everyone who does not
agree with turning the US into the latest and greatest communist
country on earth are a threat to the administration and their plans for
the destruction of this country. A very real threat indeed. And the
fact that the vets will fight for even those they are on opposite ends
of the political spectrum from, who may also find themselves on
someone’s watch list shows where the real loyalties lie. With the
Constitution of the United States of America and the God given rights
enumerated therein.
We have hundreds of thousands of men and
women that now have experience fighting an insurgent war are walking
the streets of the US, bitter about their treatment. Confused about
what has happened to this country and how we could have let it get to
this point. Angry at the apathy of the citizens of this country who
really don’t grasp how precious and delicate freedom is and that it
needs to be protected everyday. And you want to demonize them, call
THEM a threat to the United States of America? The same country we
swore to defend against all enemies foreign and domestic? We are the
threat? You bet we are.
I have heard members of society from all
walks of life openly discuss participating in a campaign of civil
unrest and if need be an outright insurgent war against any
administration that would further restrict our rights or try to strip
them from us. I have heard members of the military, active, reserves
and National Guard openly talk about what they would do if given orders
to take up arms against the citizens of the US. I have heard them make
plans as to how they would respond, individually as soldiers and as a
group of concerned citizens. If this administration thinks for a second
that they can count on the members of the military, ESPECIALLY the
Guard, Reserves and local law enforcement in the western states, they
are very wrong. Groups like Oath Keepers are springing up all over the
country and even more active groups are being started covertly that
target members of the military in an effort to educate them about the
current administration and how they are destroying everything we signed
up to defend. While the DOD is concerned about gangs in the military,
the DHS is concerned about people being drawn into white supremacist
groups, they are facing an even bigger, silent and deadly threat to
their plans to destroy this country. These people swore to fight and
die to defend her, and they are planning on doing that very thing. We
are not talking about secret meetings and plans of conspiracy or
sedition. We are talking about people doing individual soul searching
and deciding that they will not take up arms against the people of the
United States, their friends and families. They are deciding that they
will join the well organized partisan groups that will be formed. And
these folks know a thing or two about fighting a guerilla war, making
IED’s, sabotage and sniping. They were subject to it, we gave them the
power point presentations on how it worked and made them memorize it.
Even without artillery or air power these troops could wage a very
painful and expensive insurgent war against this country, or any other
on this Earth. The biggest reason the Obama administration wants to
take away our right to own firearms is not about crime control, it is
because they know that these veterans can train and lead a fighting
force that this administration has no chance of defeating. They would
have to call on the aid of foreign troops and that is every conspiracy
nuts wet dream. That event would drive hundreds of thousands of fence
sitters to join the insurgency. So that would rule that idea out.
Now
what if a couple of combat engineers joined and took their expertise of
explosives and demolitions with them? What if some of the members of
the Air Guard took their attack aircraft and decided to use them in
support of the insurgency? How do you defend against a self propelled
artillery piece that can level your building from 17 to 32 miles away
and then hide in a garage? And when a few members of the Special Forces
decide to take their skills and train and lead a group of freedom
fighters in hit and run attacks on people involved in gun confiscation,
the rounding up of political dissidents or whatever? I have heard that
kind of talk go on.
It is good that the current administration
is afraid of it’s people. It should be. They work for us and serve at
our pleasure and should be acting in our best interests. Be afraid, be
very afraid. You trained us, I promise you that you do not want to
fight us. Do not push us. You will not like it if we are forced to push
back. Nobody wants that but we find what you want for this great
country even less desirable and frankly intolerable. We simply want to
be left alone to raise our families, shape and determine our own
destinies, exercise our rights that are enumerated in the Constitution
and not live in fear of our government. We were here before you came
into power, we will be here once you have been voted out, or removed.
Which ever comes first. But we will not let you destroy this country.
Pass this on to everyone you know. US service men and women are, overwhelmigly, on the side of liberty, not tyrrany.

Current mood: frustrated
Ron Paul's plan to fend off piratesErika Lovley Erika LovleyA little-known congressional power could help the federal government keep the Somali pirates in check — and possibly do it for a discount price. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) and a growing number of national security experts are calling on Congress to consider using letters of marque and reprisal, a power written into the Constitution that allows the United States to hire private citizens to keep international waters safe. Used heavily during the Revolution and the War of 1812, letters of marque serve as official warrants from the government, allowing privateers to seize or destroy enemies, their loot and their vessels in exchange for bounty money. The letters also require would-be thrill seekers to post a bond promising to abide by international rules of war. In a YouTube video earlier this week, Paul suggested lawmakers consider issuing letters, which could relieve American naval ships from being the nation’s primary pirate responders — a free-market solution to make the high seas safer for cargo ships. “I think if every potential pirate knew this would be the case, they would have second thoughts because they could probably be blown out of the water rather easily if those were the conditions,” Paul said. Theoretically, hiring bounty hunters would also be a cheaper option. National security experts estimate that this week’s ship captain rescue by Navy SEALs cost tens of millions, although a Navy spokesman says the military cannot confirm the exact cost of the mission. Instead, privateers would be incentivized to patrol the ocean looking for key targets — and money would be paid only to the contractor who completed the job. “If we have 100 American wanna-be Rambos patrolling the seas, it’s probably a good way of getting the job done,” said Competitive Enterprise Institute senior fellow and security expert Eli Lehrer. “Right now we have a Navy designed mostly to fight other navies. The weapons we have are all excellent, but they may not be the best ones to fight these kinds of pirates. The only cost under letters of marque would be some sort of bounty for the pirates.” According to Senate historians, Congress hasn’t issued a letter of marquee since the War of 1812, but the Confederate States of America issued them during the Civil War to deliver supplies behind enemy lines. There are also some indications that a letter was granted to a flying band of armed civilians during World War II to operate the Resolute, a Goodyear Blimp used to patrol the ocean for enemy submarines, but the issuance isn’t apparent in the Congressional Record. If Congress were to revisit the antiquated process, a serious makeover would be required. In the past, privateers were allowed to keep the ship and treasure they captured in an enemy encounter. “That isn’t a viable way of funding in today’s world,” said Lehrer. “These pirates don’t really have treasure chests, and their money is tied up in Swiss Bank accounts. Congress would probably have to attach sizable bounties to people.” Bounties are not a new idea — there is still a $25 million bounty on Osama bin Laden, and millions have been awarded by the government for other enemy captures. The U.S. State Department earlier this month put a $5 million bounty on the head of the top Pakistani Taliban leader, and even local police departments use rewards to solve cold cases. University of Oregon economics professor Bill Harbaugh argues the setup could potentially work better than some of the United States’ relationships with modern-day security contractors. “Obviously, this is somewhat like the contract the government had with Blackwater, except we forgot the bond part of the contract, he said.
“If Congress had used this contract from 1776, it would have been more sophisticated than the one they issued with Blackwater.”
Harbaugh’s fifth great-grandfather, Silas Talbot, worked as an early privateer for the United States in 1780 after serving in the Revolutionary War. His letter of marque shows he set out with 12 carriage guns and a crew of 50 men to attack and seize cargo ships coming from Great Britain on the high seas.
Could it really work again?
“It may work in the sense that if you give people incentives to fight piracy, you’ll see more action taken against it,” said Andrew Grotto, a senior national security analyst with the Center for American Progress. “The ocean is huge and, practically speaking, there’s no way the Navy can prevent piracy; it’s too big. But just given the experience in Iraq with private contractors, that effort showcases the difficulties dealing with folks who aren’t answerable to anyone but shareholders.”
But Paul has already thought through a number of these updates.
Days after Sept. 11, Paul introduced legislation allowing President Bush to allow private citizens to go after Osama bin Laden and other identified terrorists and put a bounty price on the heads of targets responsible for the New York attacks. Contractors would also be required to post a play-by-the-rules bond and turn over any terrorists — and their seized property —to U.S. authorities.
“The Constitution gives Congress the power to issue letters of marque and reprisal when a precise declaration of war is impossible due to the vagueness of the enemy,” Paul wrote in a press release. “Once letters of marque and reprisal are issued, every terrorist is essentially a marked man.”
But national security experts and legal analysts warn that applying a colonial-era policy to a modern-day problem could be wrought with legal pitfalls that the Founding Fathers never encountered.
If bounty hunters chase pirates into territorial coastal waters or on to the shore of another country, the problem would fall under the jurisdiction of that country. And any plundering activity that takes place in coastal waters is no longer considered piracy, according to College of William and Mary national security law professor Linda Malone.
Not to mention that there’s also no clear indication where and how the captured pirates should be prosecuted.
“You have to find a stable court system nearby to have them tried for these offenses, but that can be quite complicated,” Malone said. “The fact that the pirates are from Somalia doesn’t make them state actors. They are doing this for private gain.”
And how to determine exactly who is a pirate — and what constitutes pirate activity — could get fuzzy.
“What happens when a ship flying under Congress accidentally takes out an aid ship bound for Somalia?” Grotto said. “At what time does an act seem pirate-like enough to cross the line? Do we really want these snap judgments being made on the fly in waters thousands of miles away from Washington? This is not Johnny Depp we’re dealing with.”
Once again, Dr. Paul finds a prudent, constitutional, and free-market solution to a festering world problem: reintroduce the tradition of privateering. Grant warrants to private individuals with the balls, money, and the know-how to sail abroad and put a swift end to these otherwise insignificant vermin. Allow the privateers to help themselves to recovered cargo, and any pirate assets the lay upon, including their boats, weapons, cash, and anything else they can use or sell. Give no quarter to pirates caught engaging in their trade. Any pirate not shot on sight, should be hanged, with their bodies gibbeted from the smoking, drifting mother ships, to deter their comrades: One excellent way to deter piracy would be to bring back the Q-ship. During both world wars, Great Britain (and the United States in WWII) turned merchant ships into heavily armed decoy vessels, like this one, the Anacapa: A tramp steamer, with fortified armor, empty containers, and a few hidden three to five inch guns should be more than a match for any mother ship; and dual M2 Brownings mounted port, starboard, stem, and stern, should take care of their Zodiacs. A few rifle teams for boarding parties couldn't hut, either. These pirates have already declared their intent to visciously murder any Americans they catch, in retribution for the three that lost their heads holding an American hostage. Vessels flying an American ensign deserve some protection, in return for the taxes they pay, and the responsibilities they take in flying said colors.

What does the Department of Homeland Security think of you? Here's the unclassified report from DHS, verified as authentic, and available now all over the web: http://www.thelibertypapers.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/hsa-rightwing-extremism-09-04-07.pdfHere is analysis by WorlNetDaily: http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=94803 Homeland Security on guard for 'right-wing extremists' Returning U.S. military veterans singled out as particular threats Posted: April 12, 2009 9:40 pm Eastern © 2009 WorldNetDaily WASHINGTON - A newly unclassified Department of Homeland Security report warns against the possibility of violence by unnamed "right-wing extremists" concerned about illegal immigration, increasing federal power, restrictions on firearms [Emphasis mine-Bo], abortion and the loss of U.S. sovereignty and singles out returning war veterans as particular threats. The report, titled "Right-wing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment," dated April 7, states that "threats from white supremacist and violent anti-government groups during 2009 have been largely rhetorical and have not indicated plans to carry out violent acts."
However, the document, first reported by talk-radio host and WND columnist Roger Hedgecock, goes on to suggest worsening economic woes, potential new legislative restrictions on firearms and "the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks." The report from DHS' Office of Intelligence and Analysis defines right-wing extremism in the U.S. as "divided into those groups, movements and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups) and those that are mainly anti-government, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration."
"[T]he consequences of a prolonged economic downturn- including real estate foreclosures, unemployment and an inability to obtain credit - could create a fertile recruiting environment for right-wing extremists and even result in confrontations between such groups and government authorities similar to those in the past," the report says.
It adds that "growth in these groups subsided in reaction to increased government scrutiny as a result of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and disrupted plots, improvements in the economy and the continued U.S. standing as the pre-eminent world power."
"Proposed imposition of firearms restrictions and weapons bans likely would attract new members into the ranks of right-wing extremist groups as well as potentially spur some of them to begin planning and training for violence against the government," the report continues. "The high volume of purchases and stockpiling of weapons and ammunition by right-wing extremists in anticipation of restrictions and bans in some parts of the country continue to be a primary concern to law enforcement."
Most notable is the report's focus on the impact of returning war veterans. "Returning veterans possess combat skills and experience that are attractive to right-wing extremists," it says. "DHS/I&A is concerned that right-wing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize veterans in order to boost their violent capacities."
The report cites the April 4 shooting deaths of three police officers in Pittsburgh as an example of what may be coming, claiming the alleged gunman holds a racist ideology and believes in anti- government conspiracy theories about gun confiscations, citizen detention camps and "a Jewish-controlled 'one-world government.'"
It also suggests the election of an African-American president and the prospect of his policy changes "are proving to be a driving force for right-wing extremist recruitment and radicalization."
The report also mentions "'end times' prophecies could motivate extremist individuals and groups to stockpile food, ammunition and weapons. These teachings also have been linked with the radicalization of domestic extremist individuals and groups in the past, such as the violent Christian Identity organizations and extremist members of the militia movement."
"DHS/I&A assesses that right-wing extremist groups' frustration over a perceived lack of government action on illegal immigration has the potential to incite individuals or small groups toward violence," the report continues.
The report states the DHS will be working with state and local partners over the next several months to determine the levels of right-wing extremist activity in the U.S.
Last month, the chief of the Missouri highway patrol blasted a report issued by the Missouri Information Analysis Center that linked conservative groups to domestic terrorism, assuring that such reports no longer will be issued. The report had been compiled with the assistance of DHS.
The report warned law enforcement agencies to watch for suspicious individuals who may have bumper stickers for third-party political candidates such as Ron Paul, Bob Barr and Chuck Baldwin.
It further warned law enforcement to watch out for individuals with "radical" ideologies based on Christian views, such as opposing illegal immigration, abortion and federal taxes.
Chief James Keathley of the Missouri State Patrol issued a statement that the release of the report, which outraged conservatives nationwide, prompted him to "take a hard look" at the procedures through which the report was released by the MIAC.
"My review of the procedures used by the MIAC in the three years since its inception indicates that the mechanism in place for oversight of reports needs improvement," he wrote. "Until two weeks ago, the process for release of reports from the MIAC to law enforcement officers around the state required no review by leaders of the Missouri State Highway Patrol or the Department of Public Safety."
"For that reason, I have ordered the MIAC to permanently cease distribution of the militia report," he said. "Further, I am creating a new process for oversight of reports drafted by the MIAC that will require leaders of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Department of Public Safety to review the content of these reports before they are shared with law enforcement. My office will also undertake a review of the origin of the report by MIAC."
More analysis from the Washington Times, if WND is too "tinfoil hat" for you: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/apr/14/federal-agency-warns-of-radicals-on-right/ Home > News > Editor Favorites Federal agency warns of radicals on right 9-page report sent to police By Audrey Hudson (Contact) and Eli Lake (Contact) | Tuesday, April 14, 2009 The Department of Homeland Security is warning law enforcement officials about a rise in "rightwing extremist activity," saying the economic recession, the election of America's first black president and the return of a few disgruntled war veterans could swell the ranks of white-power militias.
A footnote attached to the report by the Homeland Security Office of Intelligence and Analysis defines "rightwing extremism in the United States" as including not just racist or hate groups, but also groups that reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority.
"It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration," the warning says.
• Click here to download a PDF of the report. [link above- Bo] The White House has distanced itself from the analysis. When asked for comment on its contents, White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said, "The President is focused not on politics but rather taking the steps necessary to protect all Americans from the threat of violence and terrorism regardless of its origins. He also believes those who serve represent the best of this country, and he will continue to ensure that our veterans receive the respect and benefits they have earned."
The nine-page document was sent to police and sheriff's departments across the United States on April 7 under the headline, "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment."
It says the federal government "will be working with its state and local partners over the next several months" to gather information on "rightwing extremist activity in the United States."
The joint federal-state activities will have "a particular emphasis" on the causes of "rightwing extremist radicalization." Homeland Security spokeswoman Sara Kuban said the report is one in an ongoing series of assessments by the department to "facilitate a greater understanding of the phenomenon of violent radicalization in the U.S."
The report, which was first disclosed to the public by nationally syndicated radio host Roger Hedgecock, makes clear that the Homeland Security Department does not have "specific information that domestic rightwing terrorists are currently planning acts of violence."It warns that fringe organizations are gaining recruits, but it provides no numbers.
The report says extremist groups have used President Obama as a recruiting tool. "Most statements by rightwing extremists have been rhetorical, expressing concerns about the election of the first African American president, but stopping short of calls for violent action," the report says. "In two instances in the run-up to the election, extremists appeared to be in the early planning stages of some threatening activity targeting the Democratic nominee, but law enforcement interceded."
When asked about this passage, Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said, "We are concerned about anybody who will try to harm or plan to harm any one of our protectees. We don't have the luxury to focus on one particular group at the exclusion of others."
Congressional debates about immigration and gun control also make extremist groups suspicious and give them a rallying cry, the report says.
"It is unclear if either bill will be passed into law; nonetheless, a correlation may exist between the potential passage of gun control legislation and increased hoarding of ammunition, weapons stockpiling, and paramilitary training activities among rightwing extremists," the report said. The FBI was quoted Monday as saying that, since November, more than 7 million people have applied for criminal background checks in order to buy weapons.
The Homeland Security report added: "Over the past five years, various rightwing extremists, including militias and white supremacists, have adopted the immigration issue as a call to action, rallying point, and recruiting tool."
The report could signify a change in emphasis for Homeland Security under former Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano. A German magazine quoted Ms. Napolitano as rebranding "terrorism" as "man-made disasters." Since its inception in 2003, the department has focused primarily on radicalization of Muslims and the prospect of homegrown Islamist terrorism.
In January, the same DHS office released a report titled "Leftwing extremists likely to increase use of cyber attacks over the coming decade."
"These types of reports are published all the time. There have actually been some done on the other end of the spectrum, left-wing," Ms. Kuban said.
A similar headline was used in a report issued in January, Ms. Kuban said, although she could not provide the content of the headline.
Ms. Kuban said she did not know how long the new report had been in the making. "The purpose of the report is to identify risk. This is nothing unusual," said Ms. Kuban, who added that the Homeland Security Department did this "to prevent another Tim McVeigh from ever happening again."
The Homeland Security assessment specifically says that "rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat."
Jerry Newberry, director of communications for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, said the vast majority of veterans are patriotic citizens who would not join anti-government militias.
"As far as our military members go, I think that the military is a melting pot of society. So you might get a few, a fractional few, who are going to be attracted by militia groups and other right-wing extremists," he said.
"We have to remember that the people serving in our military are volunteers, they do it because they love their country, and they believe in what our country stands for," he said. "They spent their time in the military defending our Constitution, so the vast majority of them would be repulsed by the hate groups discussed in this report."
The Homeland Security report cited a 2008 FBI report that noted that a small number of returning military veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have joined extremist groups.
The FBI report said that from October 2001 through May 2008 "a minuscule" number of veterans, 203 out of 23,000, had joined groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Nations, the National Socialist Movement, the Creativity Movement, the National Alliance and some skinhead groups.
"Although the white supremacist movement is of concern to the FBI, our assessment shows that only a very small number of people with prior military experience may have an affiliation with supremacist groups," FBI spokesman Richard Kolko said Monday when asked about the FBI report.
A 2006 report from the Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization that monitors white supremacists like the Klan, said that white-power groups had an interest in the kind of training the military provides.
Mark Potok, director of the center's intelligence project, said the Homeland Security report "confirms that white supremacists are interested in the military. There is some concern, and there should be, about returning veterans, one need only think of the example of Timothy McVeigh, who was in the first Iraq war."
Mr. Potok added that he was generally pleased with the report. "Basically, the report tracks fairly closely with what we have been saying for some time now. They mention us a couple of times, though not by name," he said.
What's the point, you ask? Well, if someone flings enough crap, sooner or later, some of it will stick. The government tends to profile, to categorize based on behavior, or their perception of behavior. My concern is that no matter how often or fervently we proclaim that our units or organizations, whether KISSATA or NMS-based, is not racist or anti-government, the powers that be may look at our training, our supplies, and our preparations for any contingency, and lump us with the bad guys. That is to say, it really doesn't matter how we see ourselves, it really matters how others see us, and particularly the federales on some "task force" or another, with badges and itchy trigger fingers- the Lon Horiuchis of the world. You see yourself as a law-abiding, patriotic and prepared American, skilled with the rifle, independent and self-reliant. The government increasingly sees you as a threat. What are you threatening? That is the question. Are you against illegal immigration? Are you against abortion? Do you see a decline in the sovereignty of the United States, in favor of "international law"? Have you put away food storage? Are you willing to protect your life, liberty and property through the use of arms? If you can answer "yes" to any of these questions, there is a good chance that some apparatchik in some federal alphabet soup agency has already lumped you in with ALF/ELF, the neo-Nazis and the Islamic militants. How long until the feds go after the Appleseeders, for example? I am not ready to take my ball and go home. I'm not dropping off theradar. I am only making this federal report, and some analysis, open for discussion. How should we take this report; and what can we do to make sure we're not perceptually "mixed in" with the others (the racists and militant Islamists, particularly)? I called attention to the gun-control references since that's a hot-button issue for many of us. It seems to me that the fedcoats have upped the ante.

Pretty much all I want to say on any kind of economic bailout, whether to the automobile manufacturers, the insurance companies, or Wall Street: Carry on.

Current mood: hopeful
Any person that carries a firearm regularly must prepare himself mentally and psychologically to the notion that an adversary could shoot him. This applies both to we who carry handguns every day, and that carry rifles when appropriate, and the CIDG Rifleman, in particular. There is also the possibility of a negligent discharge at the hands of incompetent individuals. We don't always have the opportunity to gauge the ability of the person at the next station at a range, or the other hunters sharing the outdoors. "Buck fever" has the possibility, however remote, of causing a weapon to discharge negligently into another hunter. It is vital that we prepare for the possibility of treating otherwise critical wounds, particularly in the event that medical treatment is unavailable quickly enough to prevent loss of life. First, the usual disclaimer: I am not a doctor. My training in emergency medicine comes for the most part from combat veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their experience shows that in traumatic events, such as roadside ambushes and EFPs, that there is very little time for treatment before loss of life. The two injuries that seem to kill the fastest are violent amputations caused by EFPs/IEDs and gun shot wounds to the chest. My "blowout kit" mirrors ones I've examined owned by local National Guardsman recently home from a one year tour of Afghanistan. I recommend that readers seek out competent training in their own areas. Your blowout kit should be in a compact pouch attached to the front of your LBV/LBE. You should position it in the center of your vest so that you can reach it with either hand. Remember that your blowout kit is for you. You don't use its contents to treat your teammate; you use his blowout pouch to treat him. Everyone in your team that will participate in convoys or patrols should have one and be familiar in its use. Here is my take on the blowout kit. I put it together after taking FBMG's Emergency Preparedness course. I took the class and material very seriously, and made very few changes from the listed items in the course material, and even then after careful research, and conferring with some local trauma nurses. The first picture shows how it all fits on my rig. This is a Tactical Tailor MAV with X Harness. It is light and handy, to grab and go. I have the blowout kit just off center, for easy access with either hand. I've included this picture to show that the entire contents fit within the pouch snugly, but without binding the zipper. (Figure One, the pouch on the MAV) The second picture shows some of the contents: 1.) One ratchet-strap tourniquet 2.) 4.5 inch x 4 yard (stretched) Kerlix gauze roll 3.) One pair nitrile gloves, size large 4.) One Mylar emergency blanket 5.) One elastic bandage 6.) One pair EMT shears
(Figure Two, contents) Figure three shows more of the contents of the pouch: 1.) Two Israeli Battle Dressings 2.) Two sixteen gauge Angiocaths 3.) One nasopharyngeal airway, size medium
(Figure Three, contents) The last picture shows the last of the contents: 1.) Two 4 inch x 4 inch pieces of Moleskin. 2.) One Quik Clot Advanced Clotting Sponge 3.) One Medi-Burn trauma burn dressing.
(Figure Four, the last of the contents) I think these items represent the basics for initially treating common trauma (bleeding, airway, shock, burns). The purpose is not to give the kind of medical care necessary to heal a wound, but to keep one alive until teammates can secure evacuation. Again, this is the kit that each carries either to treat himself, or to allow a teammate to treat him. Each should carry his own. That is to say, it is for you, or others, to treat you. You'll treat your buddy out of his own kit. Thus, it is of a necessity for each to carry, and maintain, his personal kit.

Heads up: with the near-imminent implosion at The High Road, George "Mad Ogre" Hill and my good friends over at FBMG have started a new message board, We the Armed, at http://wethearmed.com/. It's new, but already has some good discussion going. If you normally read gun boards, and are looking to try something new, give them a shot.

I know it's been a while. I know I'm behind. I've got some good stuff in the works. In the meantime, I want to let y'all about a really cool charity event. Larry and the guys at FBMG ( FBMGinc.com) are auctioning a Stag 15 for breast cancer research. Now, if that's not cool enough, the carbine has a custom pink camouflage DuraCoat paint job. I saw this rifle the last time I was in the shop, and I must say it is wicked cool, perfect for three-gun cometition (if you really want to mess with the other competitors' heads), or as a gift for your wife or daughter. Here are some pictures: The rifle looks even better in person. Here's a link to Larry's blog: http://larrycorreia.wordpress.com/Tickets are five bucks each; and, I shouldn't have to say that all federal, state, and local laws apply. It's a fun weapon, and a great cause, so buy a ticket or three, okay?
