With the high price of fuel, we get a lot of calls and emails from people who are looking for ways to cut their fuel expenses. Here are six ways to improve your mileage.
1. Slow down! Fuel economy starts to drop off around 60-65 MPH and gets worst the faster you drive. Lock your cruise on 65 MPG sometime and check your fuel consumption for a tank and see what happens. You will not only save fuel but you will reduce wear and tear on your car and you will be safer too! Yes, it will take longer to reach your destination but by avoiding frequent stops you will get there in good time.
2. Maintain your car. You will gain a mile per gallon or more by running proper tire pressure. Check and fill your tires when they are cold for the most accurate reading. Check the owner's manual for tire pressure recommendations. Handing and tire life will be improved as a bonus. Low tires cause heat which can lead to blow-outs, and a low tire pressure will lead to uneven tire wear.
3. Keep your air filter clean. A plugged air filter will reduce both engine output and fuel economy. Don't forget to change the fuel filter too. A bad fuel filter can stall the car and a partially plugged filter makes the fuel pump work harder reducing its life span. Here is another tip for you: Don't overfill your tank. When the nozzle clicks off STOP! Overfilling can lead to evaporative fuel canister damage. Also: Don't run around on an empty tank Fuel serves to cool the fuel pump. Running low on fuel can cause the pump to heat up, shortening its life.
4. Remove excessive weight from the vehicle. It's also a good idea to avoid carrying cargo on top of your car or van. It adds weight and increases wind resistance. Get the junk out of your trunk!
5. Clean your injectors and valves. Use a good quality fuel additive like BG 44K twice a year to keep injectors and valves free of carbon deposits. Consider a fuel induction cleaning on your car if you have not been a 44K user. Excessive carbon robs your car of power and reduces fuel economy. It can also lead to drivability issues like a rough idle. I've seen 44K clear up a rough idle on one of my own cars. Try it with your next tank of fuel. You can get BG products at most NAPA and Carquest auto parts stores. Ask your shop for details.
6. Avoid excessive 'warm up's and combine your trips. Most modern cars really don't need to be 'warmed up', just drive a little easy until the temp gauge gets up to normal operating temp.
