Years of playing in supper clubs have given Geoff Lapp the time and place to develop a stylish elegance and playful warmth that makes you want to listen up. His direction at the keyboard is straight ahead but he manages to incorporate shadings, shifting moods, and dollops of personal touches. The outing covers classic ballads like Rodgers & Hart's With a Song in My Heart, his own wistful Theme for Margaret -- one of five originals -- and closes with a swinging reading of The Party's Over. His Sweet Lorraine is particularly poignant. Drummer David Laing and bassist Paul Johnston provide a classical trio setting throughout the session, with plenty of sustaining brushwork and accenting to underscore melody and harmonies.-- Irwin Block
