District 9

so, yes, i HAVE seen District 9.

don't get me wrong, basically i hate admitting that i watched a movie with such a big current hype around it. and most if all i usually don't do any reviews about them. but this time i'll make an exception. because of a major thing that i haven't experienced before: many, and i mean like 95% percent, of the people i stalk on the net (haha) haven written something very positive about this movie. sometimes only one sentence on twitter, sometimes a rather long vlog - but astonishing for me was the fact that even people who don't usually give reviews about movies said this one is awesome and it's ART.
this widespread reaction really got me and so i HAD to watch the movie as soon as possible and give my own opinion to you. if you're interested.

short prehistory
i live in germany and the cinema release of District 9 was to be set in middle of october. i couldn't find a good screener or anything alike, and you can amagine how dissappointed i was 'cause i REALLY wanted to see it, but had to wait 2 more months. plus i prefered the original dub, not a german dub.
lucky me i was in the position of see it BY ACCIDENT when i was in Hamburg last weekend where it was first shown to german audience as a part of a film festival! and of course in its original version! awesome!
stupid thing was: i noticed that much too late, so i could only get 2 tickets by pure luck, when some minutes before the film started 2 tickets were regiven, giving me the chance of spontaneously witness the screening!
major problem was: those were front row tickets. and hell, when this wasn't the BIGGEST cinema room i have ever been in! the room was extremely huge and the screen also. and me sitting - eh, lying - in the center of the first row. i had the worst possible angle to the screen you can imagine. i couldn't see much, the screen was distorted as hell. and that the film had much shaky camera work in it wouldn't help. gosh, i really got sick while watching the film from all the motion around me. and reading the few subtitles were also very hard for me, because i actually had to move my whole head from left to right in order to read it!

the film itself
well, yes, it IS brilliant. nearly everything of what is said about District 9 is right.
i usually try NOT to watch a movie with having great expectations, but in this case this wasn't really possible. but well, those expectations turned out to be correct. awesome!
story was top-of-the-arts, storytelling was individual. topic was great, too. and the actors were great.
the character evolvelment of the main character was WAY too quick to be realistic, but at least it was such great acting that it came up very believable.
the story/topic may not be new to sci-fi-fans - half of it it was some sort of rendition of Arthur C. Clarke's "Childhood's End", one of my all-time-favorite sci-fi-books - but at least it was new to the film market.
i often heard that this movie will change the genre of sci-fi forever, but let me tell you that THIS is NOT true. because its real innovations were not about sci-fi at all. like i said the sci-fi elements were quite old-fashioned. but all the other aspects about movie production, like financing the film, directing, the very special story-telling, the realism(!!) and the characters, and all that stuff - that all is the big deal about District 9. hence it will not change the specific genre of sci-fi, but the whole art of movie making in general! (but not as much as it would have changed sci-fi)

conclusion
watch it!
it is without question one of the greatest movies ever made and can without shame be listed with 2001, Matrix, Metropolis and such.
i can't really say what, but i miss something with this movie. i give it the mark of an A-, but don't ask me why.
maybe it was the strange visual perspective that keeps me from having a FULL opinion about it, but well, SOMETHING i am missing.
i will watch it again in a german cinema when the hype is ebbing. the german release has been preponed to the beginning of the next month, due to the great demand and its success. and most hopefully then i can complete my opinion about it.

here is a list of ten hateworthy things i can barely cope with these days:

- my work, for being so damn redundant
- people, in general, for acting like the egoistic fucks - what they are
- politics and media, for being plain dumb. period.
- my apartment, for acting like it's a fucking sauna
- my shower, for not knowing the difference between warm and cold
- friends, for, well, not being such alike
- murphy, for causing me that much bad luck
- myself, for being lazy and uninspiring
- time, for running with the speed of light
- reality, for being reality

so, here is a little update on how i feel right now. it's quite depressing, so stop reading here if you're in a good mood.

basically i recently noticed that i may became the kind of person i never ever wanted to be at all.
i live alone in a foreign city, barely having any friends at all. i work in a fucking office, for a firm i hate, doing stuff that doesn't matter. besides work i rarely find time or enthusiasm do create anything important. i come home, watch something, play something. bed. period.
i pay bills, i earn money so that i can pay for my car. i learn how to clean the floor, and i clean the floor. i clean the drainage.

as a former creative person i should hate myself for not creating anything for months now. but problem is i don't think it's my fault. i spend so much time being an adult. and i loose contact to everything else.
if i die now, barely anyone will notice that. only some online friends and my colleagues at work (at least till my follower begins his work, it shouldn't need more than 1~2 weeks to find him). i haven't had a relationship for 2 or 3 years now. and none cares about me.

i am 24 years old and the peak of my condition as a human being (physically) is beyond me. and i haven't reached ANYTHING that i wanted to up to this point.

and now to the really sad thing about all this: i feel okay about it all.
i have been through so much shit, and much more worse situations, i know how bad i could get (again).
but i have an income, i don't live on the streets and have all the technology around me that could entertain me for the rest of my life (without the need of social interaction).
and that is the main problem, i feel too comfortable about the whole situation and live in constant fear of the situation getting even more worse.

i am not a depressed person. i laugh everyday. i started dying, that's all.
i can't remember the point when i started falling down that downward spiral.

melancholy is the major feeling that haunts me every day. and every day i hate myself for what i've become and hope it's not too late to turn around a 180 degrees.
but right at this point i just can't do that on my own. i simply can't. i don't know how.

so, basically i wait for a miracle to happen. and until that i see the days passing by and feel my hate on the human kind grow more and more.

i feel trapped.
and alone.

From Monument To Masses:
On Little Known Frequencies
(the new album!)

well, it's a bit delayed news, sorry, but i moved lately and couldn't get my copy sooner... anyways:

it came via mail one hour ago, finally, and so i instantly heard to it. and what more can i say than "holy shit, yeah!"
it is exactly as i imagined it would be. it's post-rock at its finest, it rocks and it's FMTM at their best!

a bit too soon for a decent review. see it as advertisement for the new album ; )
it's totally great and i can only recommend it to anyone who loves rock (alternative-, post-, math-, instrumental-, political-, indie-, what~so~ever rock).

buy it.
just freaking buy it.

i got my copy directly from Golden Antenna Records, which distribute FMTM records in germany. it's just 10 bugs, so no big deal.
here's their web site:

7 reasons why Mirror's Edge kicks ass

1. the whole game seems to be all of a piece: the optics, the level design, the score, the cartoon cut scenes,... - everything fits perfectly together. it's probably the best designed game i've ever played!

2. a smooth gameplay. yes, it really plays as smooth as it looks like. sure, it has some typical ego-shooter-like flaws, but one in all it plays extremely 'solvent', and by this it reminds me of Assassin's Creed

3. everything is like the publisher promised. i mean heyh, how often happens this? they did not promis us anything we wouldn't get from the actual game. man, i could list dozens of highly disappointing titles...

4. the score is awesome. yeah, maybe not the soundtrack - Still Alive is a bit too 'plain' for my taste. but the actual score, mainly consisting of downtempo and ambient electro, is simply cool.

5. non-stop action. throughout the whole game. it just won't stop. and keeps you sticked to your keyboard until the game is over. and this will happen much too fast because of this stickyness.

6. the style. in general. i already mentioned it is well designed. hence the style of the game is purely amazing. i love those bright and stylized optics. everything looks cool, the light effects work perfectly together with the textures. the menu fits to the actual game, the color scheme is amazing. red on white, that's the spot!

7. the interface. well, actually there is no real HUD. but you can read the 'meta' you see. the saturation gives you a clue on your energy, the blur effects about your current speed. and there is no interface that shows you how much ammo you have left in your gun. no need for it. and there is also no radar, because the level itself works with its color scheme as some sort of a radar! and this actually works surprisingly well. if you are stucked, just look out for something red. your Runner instincts are astonishing.

so: go buy it. or download it.
it will be one of the best titles for 2009

it's quite some time since i saw this one in german television. sadly only the first two of four seasons got aired, because this series just kicks ass!
after nearly 10 years i forced myself to download every season and watch them in a row. and wow, did i forgot how awesome it REALLY was...

let me explain you why LEXX is one of the best tv series of the world. i assume that you never ever heard of it, what usually is the case. and that's also the reason why it's hard for me to explain it in a few words... yeah, it's damn hard to describe at all. maybe the best way to do so is do describe why i can't describe it ; )
so, let's get it on:

UNIQUE?
LEXX is a sci-fi comedy series, sort of. it sticks out of the pool of sci-fi series, such as Stargate SG1, Andromeda and others for several reasons.
• first of all it's is most notably to state that it does not follow any common used series pattern - not in case of storyline, story scheme, narrative style and so on. you simply don't know what to expect. and every minute can reveal a serious story twist.
the first seasons is consisting of 4 movies (a typical mini series). the second a typical periodic series style, much alike Stargate. the third suddenly changes to a linear style, consisting of ONE long story, to happen all on the same planet (wtf). and the fourthd... well, sort of a combination of the second and third season...
• second: it doesn't even TRY to take moral position to transfer to the audience. there isn't even a scheme for "good" or "bad". every character does have his own reasons for his actions and don't really fit into anything. and they actual CHANGE, not though a specific pattern we know from other serieses. like when a main character is cold and repellent at the beginning, he surely will be carying and warmhearted after some seasons. LEXX doesn't do that. characters evolve from the happenings and without any specific direction.
• third: it doesn't have any typical "rules" of what they may show and what not.
you see a kid, well he may die in the next 10 minutes. or after 3 episodes. so what can you expect if you don't know the rules?
every series does have a pattern and after some episodes or seasons you surely can imagine what happens next. in LEXX this just isn't possible. cool ; )

STYLE
so basicaly we are talking about a completely chaotic series, without any particular sense or direction. things that happen are random and spontaniously, and that's fun to watch because it does never get boring.
the writers/creators don't care about anything. whoops, the universe collapsed. who cares? we still have another one.

the style of the series is something different, too. in general it's very dark and cheesey. like in a bad, cheap b-movie. but with all this randomness and "insectious" ressembles it all becames a style for its own. a complete individual style.

STORY
let me give you a glimpse of the story, that may give you a good expression what the series is all about. and you will see why you can't expect anything:
the main character, Stanley H. Tweedle, a security guard class 4, had special coordinates in his teeth that lead to the destruction of nearly 100 reform planets of the Devine Order.
Zev (later Xev) is a love slave who grew up in a box. during her transformation to a love slave an accident leads her to become half Cluster Lizard. (later she sorta becomes half plant (?)).
her libido instead got somehow transfer to 790, a beheaded robot guard from the Cluster. yeah, it's just a robot head that fell in love with Xev.
Kai, last of the Brunen G, got killed by His Devine Shadow, leader of the Devine Order, and transformed one of the private assassin of His Shadow. he killed thousands and thousands of people for His Shadow. yeah, an undead assassin! awesome.
the Lexx is a large insect... "Manhattan-sized". yeah, really. some sort it was build for His Shadow, so that he could destroy planets like he wishes to (don't ask why). and it's really dumb XD
the 4 main characters somehow got to flew from the Cluster on the Lexx, with Stan as the Lexx' new captain. and that's when the series really begins *g*

the story later contains stuff like a dozens of singing brains, uncountable flying robot arms that reproduce themself by destroying the universe, speaking suns, heaven and hell, and the craziest shit ever to be viewed on screen.
cyber erotica is a big theme that appears every now and then (where do you get something like that in free tv?!?!). sexuality itself is a drift that moves most of the characters to do the next step so that the story evolves. like in real life ; )

SUM
so, to come to an end:
LEXX is hilarious cool and every sci-fi fan should watch it. and everybody else, too. just because it's SO UNIQUE.
it drops out in every point of view and it's just not able to get boring.
it's unique style may confuse easily, but that's a major point for watching it.
so get it, while it's hot. in another 10 years you won't be able to get in anywhere.

Category: Games

well, here's a list of game i currently play, games i want to play and games i might will play at some point.
if you think i should play another one i did not mention please let me know.

legend:
game i will play
game i will most likely play
game i might play

Alone in the Dark (PC)

mh... COULD get interesting. i was looking forward for such an inventory for YEARS now

Bully (PC) [finished]

i still don't know if i should play this on PS2 or on PC... have heard and seen bad things about this game on PC, but have already downloaded it and a copy for PS2 would cost me too much money... mh we'll see
EDIT: stopped at 96.*% because the rest was way too stupid to archieve and i did not want to waste that much time (<- a rare thought by me)

Burnout Paradise (PC) [finished]

because i could not decide whether to play the newest NFS or Midnight Club LA (and because i don't had the money) i decided to play Burnout instead. stopped at 97%

Call of Duty: World at War (PC) [finished]

i just love the storytelling of the CoD series and am looking forward to play the next installment
EDIT: well, wasn't as good as its prior installments, but still quite enjoyable

Dead Space (PC) [finished]

looks veeeery good. i will keep this one for a time when i need a game with >>gameplay deepness<<
edit: one playthrough, that's enough. the game was great, but the end boss was disappointing as hell.

Diablo II (PC) [finished]

i am currently playing this with a friend in coop. we play this casually
EDIT: i also started several single player walkthroughs.
EDIT#2: finished it 2 times in march and starting a second coop walkthrough with another friend (yes, i'll play two different games parallely then *g*)

Fallout 3 (PC) [cancelled]

yeah, i am looking forward for this game, because STALKER was great and also bad at the same time - and Fallout is more "my thing" (sci-fi and so on) and does not have all those shitty story-stopper bugs that STALKER had.
EDIT: the gameplay is horrible... and sometimes you search around for HOURS without finding anything usefull... i stopped playing it after ~10 hours

Fatal Frame series (PS2) [cancelled]

i am currently playing the first installment. it is... okay. MAYBE i play the other ones (Fatal Frame 2 is already in my possession)

Half Life 2: Episode 3 (PC)

when does it finally come out??

Left4Dead (PC)

depends on if a can get a crack for it...

Midnight Club LA (PS3)

looks quite good i thing. the soundtrack is good, too. maybe i will play this on PS3 instead of NFSUC

Mirrors Edge (PC) [finished]

nearly forgot about this game. parcours rocks XD
edit: oh yeah, i did hit the 100%

NFS Undercover (PS3/PC)

mh, i don't really know about this one... i don't really want to play a NFS game every goddamn year. i tend to play MCLA instead

RC Revenge Pro (PS2)

i wanted to play the sequel to "Re-Volt" for SO long

Oni (PS2) [finished]

this is sooo cool. bought a second hand PS2 version 2 weeks ago and i am playing this casually. it's hard as hell, so i don't know if i will give the hard mode a try after finishing the medium difficult mode.
edit: did not give it a second try in hard mode. was too boring after all.

Prince of Persia 7 (PS3/PC) [finished]

i am positive that the new installment of this series will be good.
EDIT: was quite cool... nothing too special, it's PoP anyways. but wished there were more unlockables. getting all the 1001 light seeds wasn't worth getting them...

Secret of Mana (SNES)

i am playing a hacked version with my brother for some months now and it seems like we will need some more months to finish it again. "Hard Secret of Mana" is the name of this hack and the name is what you actually get: it is hard es hell Oo

Silent Hill 5 (PC/PS3)

holy shit i can't wait, i can't wait, i can't wait. on what do i play it? PC or PS3??

Siren series (PS2/3)

the third game of this series looks really cool, so i want to play the first two first... but my PS2 can't play the first one, so i first have to buy a new PS2... god knows when this will be.

Super Metroid (SNES) [finished]

haven't played it for a long time and just wanted this ol' Symphony of the Night feeling back, without playing SofN

XD (didn't work, but Super Metroid is a cool game)

Tension (PC)

depends if i can get a copy of this game (*secretly looks at Andrew*)

Tekken 6 (PS3)

well, why not.

The Witcher - Expansion Packs 1+2 (PC) [finished]

just finished the normal game and will play the expansions immediately.

FMTM & Next Exit To Nowhere live at LA ZONE, Liège 2008/nov/05

yeah, that show was awesome! supporting band 'Next Exit to Nowhere' were great, too!
i sat down and tried to create something cool with the photos i took on that show. so now i was working on this for 4 days non-stop, my head is ready to explode and my back kills me. but it was worth the efforts!
the whole projects spawned those things:
