Thought you might be interested to hear about a brand new special offer on the first eight issues of Murky Depths. Just £50, plus shipping - saving almost £6 on the cover price! Here’s the direct link http://www.murkydepths.com/cart01-08.phpAlso at the main site there's a sneak preview of the cover for Issue #10 which features new fiction from Mike Carey (an integral part of the writing competition). http://www.murkydepths.com

Just back. Tired. Friday night was a 2.45 am to bed after setting up in the dealer room. I was brain dead next morning. Ian Whates looked at me from his table and said he had a feeling he wasn't going to sell much. I had a similar feeling. Maybe it was just the alcohol still running through our system. How wrong we were! It was our best first day at any convention with several new subscriptions.

This is based on a comment I made to Bill Ward's excellent blog:
I hope Lawrence’s statement that one magazine “is simply not answering subs or queries” isn’t aimed at us, but I’m afraid we at Murky Depths have been a bit remiss in that department this year. Mainly due to personal reasons that I won’t bore you with, but death, marriage and building sum them up. Our turnaround time for submissions at the moment can be anything from two days to eight months. Any time spent away from pushing Murky Depths has a marked impression on sales and, like Kaolin and Fred, I find it frustrating that such good products are still unknown to the vast market that’s out there – and I do believe the market is easily big enough to take the diverse publications that you list here, Bill, as well as the hundreds that you’ll find at Ralan and Duotrope, which is where at least half of our site hits come from. The shout, of course, of “I told you so”, then goes up that it’s only writers who buy the mags. Wrong. Few of the writers who submit to us seem even bothered to read the guidelines let alone buy a copy, yet once contributors have received their contributor copies they quite often come back and buy later issues. But the question still remains: How do you reach that market? While Murky Depths is published in the UK it is mailed to all corners of the world, but our shipping costs to the USA are half again as much as the cover price. US publications should have a huge advantage over Murky Depths with a mainland audience that means far cheaper shipping costs yet we’re still receiving new subscriptions (and re-subscriptions) from the States (and other parts of the world).
I think there’s a lot more mileage for debate with the issue of small press. Distribution companies are either not interested (though some apologise guiltily) or want huge sums up front to minimise the risk. Risk? Gardners in the UK, who distribute to Waterstones, take 57% of the cover price, and then you’ve shipping costs on top – plus it’s sale or return! So I loose money on every copy that’s sold through Gardners, and a huge hit if they’re returned. How is that encouraging new ventures?

Well, it was the best wedding I've ever been to. So said several of the guests too. Forget the biase. But it's all over now and April & Jason are man and wife.
Back to normal? No way. The extension still needs finishing and for the next two weeks we're looking after A&J's miniture dachshound, Reggie, who needs lots of attention. He's been a good boy though - but doesn't like strangers.
This year has been a year of lost days and not enough time to promote Murky Depths. When Liz's mum was hospitalised, and eventually died, Issue #7 sales didn't reach those of earlier issues (and I thought the Chris Moore cover superb) - I wasn't around to chase things. Not only that, but the extension (new kitchen/diner and studio for Murky Depths) was started at the very beginning of February (I was driving a dumper truck in a snow storm) and still needs finishing touches. With research and important material all boxed up you'd be surprised that I ever got Issue #8 onto the streets. We hyped up Issue #9 with the start of the Dead Girls graphic novel (and I'm still really excited about this project) and had load of interest at Eastercon - even before Issue #8 was published. And Issue #10 will feature a competition from Mike Carey and we've had loads of pre-orders (not due out till November) for this issue.
This week we're at the Steampunk Convivial in Lincoln on Saturday (not sure about Sunday yet) with Fantasycon the following weekend - its' the start of the convention silly season.

If all my Myspace friends bought a copy of Murky Depths #9 it'd break even. Is that a request? Well, only if people visit here and read this. Wanna take up the challenge? Then go to http://www.murkydepths.com and buy a copy . . . please. Currently there's a 3:1 ratio in favour of buyers in the States for Issue #9. Can the UK catch up?
