..Last week’s New Music Tuesday was pretty pathetic but we bounce back in a major way this week.  There’s plenty here to sink your teeth into.  Here’s the best new music released on 02/09/10.

After 25 years in the business and 10 year sabbatical since 2000’s Lovers Rock, Sade still has it.  What is “it” you may be wondering.  “It” is the capacity to craft peerless baby making music.

Today the band releases their sixth studio album titled Soldier of Love.  The 51-year-old (makes ya’ sick doesn’t it?) Sade Abu’s smoky, exquisite voice is still intact, voluptuously wrapping itself around the smooth R&B rhythms laid out on Love’s 10 tracks.  And what a sumptuous collection it is.  Listening to Love in its entirety is akin to taking that first bite of a decadent piece of dark chocolate, which is quite possibly what you and your significant other may be doing if you happen to put this album on over the Valentine’s Day (great timing Sade) holiday weekend.

The title track is a perfect reintroduction of Sade to older fans and a great starting point for a new generation of baby making machines.

Changing gears a bit, I offer up the fourth studio offering from British alt dance band Hot Chip titled One Life Stand.  Stand finds the group settling down somewhat, gently moving away from that Dance-floor aesthetic that had suited them over the last three albums and actually growing up.  Don’t get me wrong, Hot Chip are still nerdy, hipster club kids but as vocalist Alexis Taylor describes it Stand is “the most warm and soulful sounding record we've made” (Wikipedia).  I cannot argue with that assessment at all.

The title track contains one of the best pick-up lines lyrics I’ve heard thus far in this young year: “I only want to be your one life stand.”

I fell for Massive Attack in college.  Their landmark 1991 debut Blue Lines ushered in the era of trip-hop inspiring Portishead, Tricky, Björk and DJ Shadow among many others.  Their successive releases didn’t quite live up to the promise set by Lines, a fact the band will try to rectify with today’s Heligoland.  Featuring appearances by Tunde Adebimpe (TV on the Radio), Guy Garvey (Elbow), Martina Topley-Bird, Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) and Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) the pioneering band isn’t pulling any punches.

The video for lead single “Splitting the Atom” is a visual stunner.

Allow me to give you a musical history lesson.  In the late ‘60s into the ‘70s a visionary poet by the name of Gil Scott-Heron was making quite a bit of noise in New York City.  Undeniably a cultural and creative force, Scott-Heron hit the height of his fame with his seminal recording “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” in 1970.  His work during those years helped shape and influence the genres of hip-hop and neo soul.    But demons were beating at Scott-Heron’s door and in 2001 he was locked up for cocaine possession.  Two years later while on parole he was locked up again for yet another drug charge.  Scott-Heron disappearing into obscurity, a mere footnote in music history, would’ve been a tragedy.  So it pleases me to know end to see him appear at retailers today with I’m New Here, his first album of new material in 13-years.  His, simply put, is a voice that must be heard.

Lead single “Me and the Devil” is indicative of the power, sadness, hope and beauty you will find on I’m New Here.

Other notable albums released today include a 2CD set from Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds titled Live in Las Vegas, a 2CD retrospective from k.d. lang titled Recollection, Mechanize from metal band Fear Factory , Crows from alternative country artist Allison Moorer, Haywire from country artist Josh Turner, Another Round from R&B artist Jaheim, Odd Blood from rock band Yeasayer, Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice from Finnish rock band HIM, Melatonin Magik from rapper Canibus, Eyelid Movies from electronic rock duo Phantogram, Future Sons & Daughters  from singer-songwriter AM, Black Noise from techno artist Pantha du Prince, What You’re Getting Into from blues-rock guitarist artist Shannon Curfman, Talking to You, Talking to Me from The Watson Twins, Somewhere in Time from alternative country band Reckless Kelly, Ironbound from trash metal band Overkill, Ya-Ka-May from funk/jazz jam band Galactic, Truth on Tape from folk rock duo Smile Smile and Goat Speaks from goth rock band The Goat & The Occasional Others.

That was fun.  I might come back and do this again next week...if I’m not suffering from a love hangover.

I’m so dismayed.  Today’s New Music Tuesday isn’t quite as beefy as I’d hope after taking last week off.  In fact it’s downright disappointing.  Regardless here’s the best passable new music released on 02/02/10.

A mere week from today prolific rapper Lil Wayne is set to begin a yearlong stint in prison on weapons charges.  So on the eve of his disappearance from the public eye we get Rebirth, a muddled rap-rock hybrid that makes nü-metal pioneers Limp Bizkit sound like Hall of Fame material.  For those of you that have difficulty reading between the lines, that last sentence was my polite way of saying that this album is shit.  Short of the Eminem collaboration “Drop the World” there isn’t much here for the listener to latch on to.  This one of those albums you definitely sample before you buy.  Do us all a favor Weezy and stick to what you know, mainly Carter albums, mixtapes and guest spots on other artist’s singles.

Second single “On Fire” elicits a yawn from me but there is something pretty to look at in the video.

And now for something wildly divergent from Lil Wayne I offer the debut album from Nick Jonas and the Administration titled Who I Am.  “The Administration” is made up of former members of Prince’s New Power Generation and that may be the most interesting thing about this album.  Sure it’s competent, a decent solo debut from the youngest Jonas brother.  But am I going to go nutty for it like some teenage fangirl with homemade “Team Jacob” poster on my wall.  Nope!  I’ll reserve that adulation for Joe’s solo debut.

Titular lead single “Who I Am” and its accompanying video is cute enough I guess.  I’m sure plenty of girls will hit puberty during its running time.

Other notable albums released today include Hellbilly Deluxe 2: Noble Jackals, Penny Dreadfuls and the Systematic Dehumanization of Cool from Rob Zombie, The Courage of Others from folk rock band Midlake, Wall of Sound: The Best of Phil Spector, the self-titled debut from indie rock band The Soft Pack, the self-titled debut from heavy metal band Charred Walls of the Damned, These Hopeful Machines from composer BT, a 2CD set from Joe Satriani titled Live in Paris: I Just Wanna Rock, Concrete Jungle from soul singer-songwriter Nneke, Planet Anthem from jam band Disco Biscuits, Bk3 from former Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick, A Chorus of Storytellers from post-rock project The Album Leaf and the US release of Prior to the Fire from Canadian hard rock group Priestess.

And with that I’m done.  Have a great week all and see ya’ next week.

If you’re into indie rock I have a New Music Tuesday just for you.  Here’s the best in new music released on 01/05/10.

Early in 2008, Vampire Weekend’s self-titled debut burst onto the indie rock scene in a huge way.  The fusion of African rhythms a’la Paul Simon’s Graceland meshed with the smartness of preppy, Ivy League reared musicians made Vampire Weekend one of the more critically adored albums of ’08.  Today they release their eagerly awaited follow-up, Contra.

With elements of hip-hop, electro, reggae, ska, dancehall and Afro-pop rolled into an Upper West Side approach to lyricism, Vampire Weekend have once again struck on a winning formula.  Imminently listenable and approachable, Contra is the perfect album for those stuck in the winter doldrums.

Lead single “Cousins” finds the band experimenting with their formula a bit but still playing it relatively straight.

Alternative rock band and viral video superstars OK Go return to retailers today with their third studio album titled Of the Blue Colour of the Sky.  If you happen to pick it up and hear more than a passing resemblance to the psych rock forefathers Flaming Lips then there’s a logical reason why.  Longtime Lips producer Dave Fridmann manned the boards for this release and his psych-pop sensibility suits the L.A. based band just fine.

Here’s the video for lead single “WTF?”  Disclaimer: I cannot be held responsible for what happens if you watch this video while high.

Other notable albums released today include Ollusion (seriously?) from R&B artist Omarion, Y Not from Ringo Starr, the self-titled debut from rock band AM Conspiracy, the debut solo album from Rilo Kiley drummer Jason Boesel titled Hustler’s Son, The Day After Everything Changed from singer-songwriter Ellis Paul, July Flame from singer-songwriter Laura Veirs, a live album from rock band O.A.R. titled Rain or Shine, Ghosts on the Boardwalk from punk band Bouncing Souls, Heartland from indie rock artist Owen Pallett, Superficial from stain on society Heidi Montag, The Love Unconditional EP from season seven “American Idol” finalist Jason Castro, Ride to California EP from alternative act Paper Tongues, Out of My Hands from pop rock group Green River Ordinance, When Everything Breaks Open from singer-songwriter Matt Morris and a reissue of Live At Hollywood High from Elvis Costello & The Attractions.

That’s all I have folks.  Have yourself a fantastic week and see you next Tuesday.

Sadly in this, the first full week of 2010, there isn’t too much going on in New Music Tuesday.  That’s okay though.  We’ll manage somehow.  Here’s the best in new music released on 01/05/09.

Hot pop artist Ke$ha wants to "give people something that brings them joy. There are artists who do more serious acoustic stuff, and I really admire them, but what I want to bring to the table is just fucking fun" (Digital Spy).  That in a nutshell is the allure of her debut album Animal
released today.

With song titles like “Hungover,” “Take it Off” and “Party At a Rich Dude’s House” it’s clear what you are getting if you happen to purchase Animal.  It’s fitting that this is the first major release of the young year.  It’s as if those New Year Eve parties have yet to end.

If you’ve yet to hear lead single “Tik Tok” please allow me to let it furrow into your brain, take root there like a parasite and eventually rot you from within.  It’s only fair since that’s what it’s done to me.

Yeah, he may be the biggest douche the world has ever seen but there is no denying the musical genius that is Kanye West.  Today he releases Storytellers, a live CD/DVD set that originally aired on VH1 last year.  It’s worth picking up just to hear/see the forces that went into some of his biggest hits, tunes like “Good Life” and “Heartless.”  And take it from me, a man that has seen West live, he’s an exhilarating performer.

Take a look at West performing “Paranoid” taken from “Storytellers” as it originally aired.

Other notable albums released today include Unbroken from “American Idol” season five runner-up Katharine McPhee and…um…that’s about it.

Since today’s New Music Tuesday is so slim it’s bonus time.

Jay-Z
with “On To The Next One” featuring Swizz Beats:

OutKast’s Big Boi with “Shine Blockas” featuring Gucci Mane:

Mos Def
with “History” featuring Talib Kweli:

That’s all I have today folks.  Don’t forget to catch my latest post on The Daily Planet.  Have a great one ya’ll and see you next week.

In today’s New Music Tuesday we have a rarity for this time of year, a big name release.  Let’s get this show going.  Here’s the best in new music released on 12/22/09.

The queen of hip-hop soul, Mary J. Blige, returns to retailers today with her ninth studio album titled Stronger with Each Tear.  After an often tumultuous life expressed in great detail over previous albums, Blige describes Stronger thusly:

The album represents who and what I am right now. I’m a stronger human being after all the growing pains. It’s about life, love, change, strength—mostly really knowing who you are and being confident in that.” (Rap-Up)

A bevy of A-list writers and producers (Polow Da Don, Raphael Saadiq, Ne-Yo, The-Dream) worked with Blige on Tear and although it’s an extremely competent album it doesn’t quite stand up to the raw, emotional passion of previous albums.

Second single “I Am” was produced by Stargate (Rihanna, Beyonce) and should fare better on the charts and with Blige's audience than underwhelming lead single “The One” featuring Drake.

I honestly don’t know why I’m highlighting We Are Young Money from the aptly named Young Money.  Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that two of the artists from the Young Money Entertainment stable have been omnipresent this past year: Lil Wayne and Drake.  Those two along with lesser Young Money artists are well represented on this release.  My advice is to pick and choose what tracks you want, namely the ones on which Weezy and Drake pop up.

I throw some excellent parties but for some reason they just don’t come across quite as exciting than those seen in the video for second single “Bedrock.”

As a Christmas gift to all of you I feel like giving you an onslaught of new music/videos to check out, things like “WTF?” by OK Go:

Or “I’d Do It Again” by Corrine Bailey Rae:

There’s the sublime “Young Forever” by Jay-Z and featuring Mr. Hudson:

And we’ll end it with “Spy” by Beat Assailant:

Other notable albums released today include Mudvayne from alternative metal band Mudvayne, a re-release of Relapse titled Relapse: Refill from Eminem, Unleashed from rapper Hurricane Chris and a live Box Set from Dave Matthews Band titled Europe 2009.

Have a fantastic holiday my friends and if you’re lookin’ for that perfect last minute gift idea (there are only three shopping days left) might I suggest something as simple as love.  One well placed hug or act of genuine kindness is often the greatest gift a person can give.  Have a great week everybody and we’ll see you on the other side.

A heavy hitter that looks amazing in tight pants, filler till the next Justin Timberlake album drops and a collection of weirdos.  That’s today’s New Music Tuesday in a nutshell.  Here’s the best in new music released on 12/15/09.

The Element of Freedom
, released today, is Alicia Keys fourth studio album.  Freedom was described by Ms. Keys thusly: “It feels emotional and vulnerable but there's also a kind of freedom in it. I can't quite find a better word than freedom to really describe it. Even though every song has touches of different textures and sounds, the overall [sense of] freedom is the thing that grounds it. It's definitely the theme of where I am in my life.” (Billboard)  I didn’t know Keys was caged so to say but across these 14 tracks Keys vividly illustrates why she is a step above her R&B contemporaries.

Second single “Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart” is an emotional burner and pay close attention to the aforementioned tight pants.

Despite being married to one of the hottest women in the world (Paula Patton) Robin Thicke still wants to get in your pants, only if you have lady parts that is.  That’s the impression I get on his fourth studio album Sex Therapy released today.  Thicke really doesn’t do much to distinguish himself from his R&B lothario peers on Therapy.  He just sounds a lot prettier doing it that’s all.

“Sex Therapy” is the first single from the album and Thicke wastes no time letting you know what this one is all about.

I’ve exasperated myself in attempts to explain the music of Animal Collective.  So I’ll just throw up my hands and beg you to find their mesmerizing EP Fall Be Kind instead.

No official single from this one but you need to hear “What Would I Want? Sky.”  The tune received an extremely rare 10 out of 10 rating from respected music webzine Pitchfork.  It also employs the first licensed legal Grateful Dead sample ever (“Unbroken Chain”).

Other notable albums released today include Traveling Circus from country artist Phil Vassar, a live album from Kylie Minogue titled Kylie: Live in New York, a remix album from indie rock band Shiny Toy Guns titled Girls Le Disko, Catharsis from gothic metal band Elis, Cogs, Wheels And Lovers from electric folk Steeleye Span, Everyone from garage rock band The Willowz, and Can’t Knock the Hustle from rapper Bueno.

Over on The Daily Planet this week I’ve listed the Top Ten Albums of 2009.  Take a gander at it whenever you get a chance.  Have a great week all and I’ll see you next Tuesday.

What you have here is a lean, mean New Music Tuesday for you.  Let’s get right to it.  Here’s the best in new music released on 12/01/09.

You’d be sadly mistaken if you assumed that R. Kelly’s 10th studio album, titled simply Untitled, would be toned down somewhat in the face of his acquittal on child-pornography charges last year.  Kelly built his legacy on his back so to say.  It has amassed him a fortune and made him millions of fans around the world.  Hell, I still put “Bump n’ Grind” on when I feel my temperature rising.  So yes, ten albums in Kelly is still producing/writing/arranging tunes specifically about sex.  Why should he stop now, it obviously sells.

Lead single “Number One” featuring Keri Hilson is a slow tempo jam in Kelly’s trademarked style.

Most audiences outside of the UK are largely unfamiliar with English R&B artist Mr. Hudson but they’ve likely heard his voice before.  He was featured on Kanye West’s single “Paranoid” from 808s & Heartbreak and more recently on “Young Forever” from Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3.  Today marks the US release of his second studio album Straight No Chaser, his first via West’s GOOD Music vanity label.  West also served as executive producer on Chaser and his touch, stylistically, bears a strong resemblance to West’s aforementioned Heartbreak.  Luckily for the listener though Hudson’s vocal chops are a bit stronger than West’s.

Take a peek at the video for third single “White Lies” and let me know what you think.

Other notable albums released today include Just Like You from season eight “American Idol” contestant Allison Iraheta, Stir the Blood from rock band The Bravery, Cocky & Confident from rapper Juvenile, Jukebox from pop singer-songwriter Priscilla Renea, and an iTunes exclusive EP from indie folk band Deer Tick titled More Fuel For The Fire.

Just a friendly reminder, I am writing over on The Daily Planet as well and my most recent post there is a must read.  Have a great week all and I’ll see you next Tuesday.

It’s that time of the year where record companies start unloading their big holiday releases.  Therefore today’s New Music Tuesday is stuffed much like those turkeys most of us will be eating next Thursday.  Here’s the best in new music released on 11/17/09.

First up to bat is Before I Self Destruct, the fourth studio album from my favorite multiple gunshot victim 50 Cent.  At the risk of multiple gun inflicted wounds to myself I’ll write that if you own just one 50 Cent album then there really is no need for you to purchase this one.  It’s essentially more of the rote gangster-isms, tales of urban warfare and misanthropy 50 has spun on his previous three albums.  These 16 tracks will ring especially hollow knowing that they come from the throat of a multi-millionaire.  This lack of originality will no doubt thrill 50’s core group of fans but alienate casual listeners like myself.

Official lead single “Baby by Me” featuring Ne-Yo and produced by Polow da Don (“Love in This Club,” “Turnin’ Me On”) is rising steadily on the Billboard charts, the same Billboard that stated “with its club synthesizers and Ne-Yo-aided chorus, the track is far more radio-friendly than his past attempts. But it's also the least distinctive.”

Up next and veering sharply from 50 Cent (although she does have collaborations with Wyclef Jean, OutKast, Q-Tip and Talib Kweli under her belt) comes the fourth studio album from Norah Jones titled The Fall.  This is a different release from Jones in the sense that she’s experimenting with new sounds and taking her craft in new directions (taking notes 50?).  A large amount of credit for this approach goes to producer Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Modest Mouse, Kings of Leon).  Collaborations with Ryan Adams and Okkervil River’s Will Sheff are also in store if you happen to pick up this release.

I thoroughly enjoy lead single “Chasing Pirates” although it is a bit on the short side.

Moving on I offer the fourth studio album from John Mayer titled Battle Studies.  Mayer has long been hit or miss with me.  There’s no denying his acumen with a guitar in his hands but the “gravity” of his lyricism often grates on me.  In describing the album Mayer says that it’s “called Battle Studies and that's because it incorporates a lot of the lessons, a lot of the observations, and a little bit of advice. Like a handbook, like a heartbreak handbook" (Wikipedia).  That’s all I needed to retreat in the other direction.

Lead single “Who Says” is a collection of intimate declarations by a pot
smoker.  It’s actually quite tamer (think Jack Johnson) than you’d imagine.

It’s puzzling to me why British pop star Robbie Williams never really latched on in the States.  His chosen genre and ability to court controversy seem to be tailored specifically for American audiences.  Maybe with the US release of his eighth studio album today, Reality Killed the Video Star, he’ll get that American breakthrough that has long eluded him.  Lead single “Bodies” is definitely a step in the right direction.

Season 8 American Idol winner Kris Allen releases his self-titled debut today and after giving it a quick listen I agree 100% with “Entertainment Weekly” columnist Whitney Pastorek’s review: “on his post-Idol debut, the season 8 champion sniffs around a musical identity but never quite curls up in one.”  Allen is clearly a competent vocalist but with 11 producers on this album it’s simply a case of too many cooks in the kitchen.  That quality that made Allen shine on Idol gets lost in the muddled mix.

Lead single “Live Like We’re Dying” will do an excellent job of expanding Allen’s reach beyond the Idol crowd, if that’s even possible.

Let’s see, we have Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss) on vocals and guitar, John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) on bass and keys and Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) covering the drums.  Do I really need to write anything more?  They are the very definition of a supergroup, calling themselves Them Crooked Vultures, and they release their debut album today.

The title of the second single “Mind Eraser, No Chaser” is so apt after listening to the tune.

Other notable albums released today include the US release of Echo from British R&B/pop diva Leona Lewis, a greatest hits collection from Janet Jackson titled Number Ones, Waking Up from OneRepublic, My World from Canadian pop artist Justin Bieber, a live greatest hits compilation from Rush titled Working Men, a covers album from Boyz II Men titled Love, the US release of Comes and Goes from Canadian rock band Default, a CD/DVD greatest hits collection from Fall Out Boy titled Believers Never Die: Greatest Hits, Pretty Ricky from Pretty Ricky, the long delayed The Seventh Seal from hip-hop icon Rakim, A Friend of a Friend from bluegrass collective Dave Rawlings Machine, the US release of Don’t Stop from electropop artist Annie, MTV Unplugged from  Katy Perry, an EP titled The Weekend: Friday from pop punk band Forever the Sickest Kids, The Shape of Energy from folk pop band We All Have Hooks For Hands, the self-titled debut from rock supergroup The Company Band (Clutch frontman Neil Fallon, Fireball Ministry frontman James Rota, CKY drummer Jess Margera, guitarist Dave Bone, and Fu Manchu bassist Brad Davis), a 2 CD/DVD live combo from Paul McCartney titled Good Evening New York City and a live 6-disc live box set from The Doors titled Live in New York taken from a 1970 two night stand at the Felt Forum in New York City.

Before I go I have a little housekeeping to do.  I’ve accepted an offer to become a feature writer with The Daily Planet, “a community of creatives who love their craft.”  It’s a great opportunity for me and one I feel I must take.  Unfortunately something needs give in order for me to do this.  Therefore “What To Do?” is going to be few and far between from here on out.  It was a tough decision to make and trust that I didn’t approach it lightly.  So visit me at The Daily Planet, poke around, and become a member.  I guarantee you’ll find something there you’ll enjoy.

Have a great week all and I’ll see you next Tuesday.

It’s a lazy rainy day in Raleigh, NC (where I live for those that don’t know) so I’m taking a lazy approach to today’s New Music Tuesday essentially throwing stuff up and seeing what sticks.  Here’s the best in new music released on 11/10/09.

I’ll lose a lot of respect for myself by leading with Bon Jovi’s eleventh studio album titled The Circle but at the same time these guys have been trucking since ’83, going strong from some 26 years.  In an interview with Rolling Stone stalwart guitarist Richie Sambora says that Circle is a return to “rock and roll" and said "There’s going to be some big choruses on there. It sounds like Bon Jovi, but it sounds fresh. We experimented with a lot of new sounds and had a really good time working with John Shanks (album producer), who is also a really good guitar player, so he and I did a lot of ‘weaseling’ with the guitar sounds. There are a lot of really good guitar sounds and new kind atmospheres on the new Bon Jovi record, that I think makes it really modern. I think people are going to dig it, man. And it rocks hard." (Wikipedia, told ya’ I was gonna be lazy today).

Lead single “We Weren’t Born To Follow” isn’t going to knock anybody off their feet but will fit nicely into the band’s rotation of stadium anthems.

Underground mixtape king Wale is finally breaking through with his major label debut today titled Attention Deficit.  A unique talent among the ringtone-rap that currently dominates the genre (I’m lookin’ squarely at you Soulja Boy) Wale is a fiercely intelligent lyricist (seek out ‘08’s The Mixtape About Nothing and it’s standout “The Kramer”) that has finally been given a chance to reach further than he ever has before.  Amongst the go-go beats of his native D.C. and a bevy of top-notch producers (Mark Ronson, Cool & Dre, The Neptunes, Dave Sitek) Wale delivers a very promising debut that confirms what anybody that has previously come across any of his mixtapes already knows, this is a rapper worth listening to.

You’ve already seen lead single “Chillin’” featuring Lady Gaga here once before but it’s worth tossing up again.  The Boy and I counted in case you’re curious.  Wale says his own name 11 times in this tune although it feels more like 128.

I really don’t have anything else to share beyond the video for Jay-Z’s excellent “Empire State of Mind” featuring Alicia Keys.  Even if you absolutely hate NYC this love letter to “The City that Never Sleeps” is easily one of the best singles of the year.

Other notable albums getting a release today include Before I Self Destruct from 50 Cent (this is an iTunes exclusive release, the album hits retailers next week), Memento Mori from rock band Flyleaf, a CD/DVD box set from AC/DC titled Backtracks, Alter the Ending from emo maestros Dashboard Confessional, Hello Hurricane from alt rock band Switchfoot, a greatest hits package from Britney Spears titled Britney: The Singles Collection, an EP from Wyclef Jean titled From the Hut, To the Projects, To the Mansion, a live CD/DVD combo from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club simply titled Live, Desperate Measures from rap metal band Hollywood Undead, The Bridge from Canadian R&B artist Melanie Fiona (second single “It Kills Me” was an iTunes Free Single of the Week a few weeks back and this chick is legit), a double album of singles, covers, rarities, etc. from indie rockers Snow Patrol  titled Up to Now, a live CD/DVD combo from Jason Mraz titled Jason Mraz’s Beautiful Mess: Live From Earth, Xenophanes
from The Mars Volta guitarist Omar Alfredo Rodriguez-Lopez, a seasonal album from Tori Amos titled Midwinter Graces, I Want You Back! Unreleased Masters from the Jackson 5, a collection of rarities from rock band The Tubes titled Mondo Birthmark, Night is the New Day from alt metal band Katatonia, a compilation from Ray Davies titled The Kinks Choral Collection, a live CD/DVD combo from The Killers titled Live at Royal Albert Hall, a CD/DVD combo from Dolly Parton titled Live From London, and an EP from Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle) side project Puscifer titled “C” Is For (Please Insert Sophomoric Genitalia Reference HERE).

That’s all I have today folks.  Have a fantastic week all of you and I may or may not see you on Friday for What To Do?  Work dictates my availability these days.

So Halloween is upon us and since I’m in the habit of sharing my yearly costume choices with ya’ll it is time for the “big” reveal.  The title of this year’s costume is “Keep Up the Faith.”

Not too shocking right?  But you may be asking why it is titled “Keep Up the Faith.”

You really didn’t think I was going to go the safe route on the on the one day of the year my id is allowed to take control did you?  I mean you’re talking to a guy that was Dr. Seymour Bush, Gynecologist last year for Halloween.

The Wife and I are still throwing our annual Halloween party tomorrow night.  We’re expecting about fifty guests to filter through the house at various points throughout the evening.  So if you happen to find yourself in Raleigh, NC tomorrow night swing on by.  This guy will be serving shots all night long.

We’ll also have a keg of Bud Light by the fire pit out back.  Nothing but the finest mass produced domestic swill for our friends.

All of this takes a backseat to the real celebration occurring today however.  The Girl, the only one I’ll ever have, turns seven today.  So join with me in wishing this beautiful, talented, smart, opinionated, sweet, bossy, energetic bundle of overflowing joy a Happy Birthday.

Let’s see what is on tap this weekend.

RE: New Music Tuesday

SPORTS
:
My East Carolina Pirates put a smack down on Memphis earlier this week which is a good thing.  We’ll need the extra time to prepare for what will likely be an angry Va. Tech team visiting us next Thursday.  In other local NCAA Football action tomorrow (10/31) NC State hosts Florida State at 12PM (Raycom), Wake Forest pays a visit to 18th ranked Miami (ABC Regional) and Duke travels to Virginia.  Kickoff for both of those games is at 3:30PM.  There’s a toss-up between what is the big game of the day however.  If you’re on the West Coast it is likely 4th ranked USC at 10th ranked Oregon (8PM, ABC).  But you may also have your eye on 3rd ranked Texas at 13th ranked Oklahoma State (8PM, ABC Regional).
Game 3 of the World Series is coming your way tomorrow night at 7:57PM on Fox.  The Phillies and Yankees have tired the Series at 1-1.  Andy Pettitte is taking the mound for NY while Cole Hamels is handling the duties for the Phillies.  Game 4 is Sunday (11/01) night at 8:20 on Fox.
It’s Week 8 in the NFL and the 2-4 Carolina Panthers visit 4-2 Arizona Sunday at 4:15PM.  Anybody recall the last time these two teams matched up?  Panthers QB Jake Delhomme ended up throwing five picks in the ‘08 divisional playoffs.  Jake already has 13 INTs on this season so I’m not looking forward to this game at all.  There is no Sunday night game on NBC but the Monday (11/02) night game on ESPN has Atlanta at New Orleans.
The Sprint Cup is in Talladega, Alabama this Sunday for the AMP Energy 500 at the Talladega Superspeedway.  Jimmie Johnson is currently the man at the top of the heap.  The race starts at 1:19PM on ABC.

Have a great Halloween everybody and above all be safe.  There are quite a few freaks out there namely the priest in the picture up above.  And above all please remember to be good to each other.
