absolutearts.com Portfolio Abstract art is vanishing everywhere, in every corner of the world. What is the reason behind it? Is it just because of the new age philosophy and aesthetics that has come to the fore. Is it postmodernism that is replacing it? This may be one reason but main reason of its becoming irrelevant is not this one. Abstract Art failed because the premise on which it is based and the promises it promised could not deliver us. Abstract art promised that it would provide the spectator with an authentic aesthetic experience in art which it did not fulfill. In India it failed badly; in the hands of many craft oriented artists who understood it just a crafty affair. In India it became a decorative art. Many artists without having any experience of the aesthetics even without any subjective meddling are producing it with the perspective point of view. Some other artists take it as a genre in which there is nothing more then the creation of visual effect with colors while for many more others its about texture. I have met many artists ( I would not name as its their business ) who are practicing abstract art far almost 20 years but do not know what is abstraction or what is the philosophy behind it; even what is its consciousness. Abstract artist would put his hands on his heart and would say its about Heartily feelings, its Ibadata, its Sanyastha etc. but they would not tell you what it is actually; either orally or through their works. They would repeat and repeat and go on repeating and if question would be raised they would say its Jaap they are doing (they would take religious turn) or some obscure answer mostly referring to religious concepts. Mostly among them are religious sentimentalists, superstitious and poor in spirit without knowledge of Modernism's core premises of arts. Kandinskey would not have been thought that the abstract art that he had considered a logical outcome of his artistic consciousness would fall under this kind of superstitious category. Mandarin or Klee would not have been thought that some day abstract art form would be mocked by a Bollywood cinema star Saif Ali Khan in a paint company's Advertisement. Saif's advertisement is legitimate if we would evaluate the entire scene of abstract art in India. If abstract art is only about paint throwing and constructing the good scene manually like a craftsman then it must vanish from the art scene. But fortunately Abstraction is about an extraordinary aesthetic experience in art not about craftsmanship, it's not illogical as it has been considered rather it's more logical then other visual art forms. I have already written an article on the subject months back with the heading “abstraction and the dreaming extra ordinary” refer to that article to follow this one. Abstract art tries to determine the indeterminate and it is understood; it can not be done through objectification, mannualism and irrationalism. It's philosophical and rational because it has a purpose. Its purposefulness lies in its accomplishment as an artwork which is the figure of the answer to the enigma. Abstraction is enigmatic because it's about authentic experiences and accomplishment of it in an artwork. And this enigmatic quality is not consisting in its composition rather the truth content of the artwork that directly refers to artist's consciousness. Without philosophical reflection there is no authentic experience possible and this we know very well. Even in the case of authentic religious experiences it is needed, without it what one would experience would not be an authentic one. Buddha's last word ‘be a light unto yourself' is an expression of this very truth. The question posed by surrealist painter Rene Magritte about relationship of word and image is an outcome of his philosophical reflection. Only through philosophical reflection aesthetics can be justified not otherwise. Only through philosophical reflection artist becomes self-consciousness in order to offer us some extraordinary experiences. This is why great artworks demand interpretation; through interpretation one grasps the intentions of the consciousness of the artists and his realization the truth of art. Artist's claim that abstract painting is not to be interpreted but is to be seen is a false claim and nothing else but is an escape. Artist tries to hide his fake consciousness through it as he had not offered anything to the spectator in his artwork other then a colorful object. Saif Ali khan mocks this very artistic spirit in his commercials by showing to the people that, if abstract art is merely an objective accomplishment of the visual effect its not any big thing; everyone can do it. In Indian contemporary art very few artists have understood the enigmatical nature of abstraction and its rationale. Its misconception and wrong understanding that Abstract art would always grounds itself in idealism. It can be materialist in its approach if one takes it from rationalism's point of view in its uncorrupted spirit. It was never considered from this point of view in the west and in the east both. read original article absolutearts.com Portfolio

absolutearts.com Portfolio German Artist Anselm Reyle is experimenting with abstract art. He has resolved to revive it. Inspired by Barnett Newman, Kenneth Noland, Ellswort Kelly, he is giving abstraction a new look. He uses neon light, til foil, glitters, different kind of impasto colors to create effects. Its a news that collectors are taking interest in his experimental kind of abstract art though mostly people condider his abstract as kitsch. Recently in an interview he said, “this is what he is trying out.”; means it is kitsch that he is creating. He said that earlier abstract artists were avoiding being decorative and from here he is taking his flight. Being decorative is not bad if one is able to create the decorative . Matisse was very much interested in decorative art; he encouraged many artists to do it, even he himself tried this out. Many of his famous paintings that we refer to are an outcome of his decorative longing. Anselm Reyle is in the tradition of the many expressionist artists who were decorative in their approaches. My image Romantica (from the exhibition series) is currently competing in "Showdown". If you would like to stop-by and cast me a vote, it would be appreciated. I have entered this image on several past occasions, and it always comes very near the top, but never quite wins. It also features on a regular basis in the viewers "50 most favourite images" at Saatchi Online, so I thought I'd try and give it a push for once. You can go to this link to vote: Thanks :-) absolutearts.com Portfolio
