Category: Parties and Nightlife
Kickin' it at Corey-oke at Happy Ending with Gabe, Merrie and Jon. Asking to hear "Fly To the Angels" by Slaughter, and being shot down. Bribing the drummer $1 cash for each stick twirl. Downing umpteen pitchers of Stella. Puttin' it all on my Mastercard. Passively flirting with the 5'11" brunette. Chickening out when Merrie tells me to make a move. Sippin' a Maker's Mark -- neat -- while dropping Japanese at Burgundy Room. Anatawa-kawaii. Chatting up the D.J. and impressing her with my knowledge of Black Sheep and 3rd Bass. Eating a slice of pizza while dropping Spanish at Greco's. Oye, que linda! Hola, chula. Como se dice "bra strap" in Espanol?

WEST HOLLYWOOD HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL
Halloween at Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood
Join 500,000 of your closest friends in celebrating Halloween Carnival 2008 in West Hollywood. This is the largest Halloween street party in the United States, spanning over one mile of historic Route 66 in the heart of West Hollywood. Santa Monica Boulevard is closed between La Cienega and Doheny Boulevards to host close to 500,000 attendees. Four stages will feature non-stop talent, dancing and costume contests. Drag queens, divas and wanna-be Vegas showgirls (or guys) put on a fashion show where gravity-defying stilettos, big hair and sequined minis rule.

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS (The Day of the Dead)
Early November at the corner of Olvera St. & Cesar Chavez Ave. (Downtown L.A.)
THE Day.
The Experience: Central to the Olvera Street festival is an assembly of "ofrendas," offerings on colorful altars. Along with marigolds (Mictecacihuatl's favorite flower), the dead are presented with tamales, moles and "pan de muertos," bread decorated with little dough crossbones. Symbolizing the spirit of the dead, skeletons also make a big presence during the holiday, with paper cutouts hanging on storefronts and candy shaped into skulls. Visiting mortals can enjoy music, dancing and storytelling; after dark, a costumed, candlelit procession wraps up festivities.
