So, as some of you know and some of you don't, I hold down a 9 to 5 to support myself while I build the foundation on my musical castle. And I'm currently on graveyard shift, working 6pm-6am.
It's a pretty sweet gig most of the time, because I get time to write lyrics, read, meditate, and launch other ridiculous projects.
One of them is a blog I started a little while back called Good Side of Bad (the name ties in to my series of EP's - sweet cross-promoting, huh?).
I write about whatever tickles my fancy, boils my blood, or makes a burning in my loins. Topics have so far included public school PSA's, Carlos Mencia being a turd, Macklemore being a terrific artist, and Kidz Bop being the music of satan.
You can, and should, check it out, if for nothing else than to see my horrendous use of grammar and English, and to see me put twats like Glen Beck in their place:
Comments here or on the blog would make me feel pretty neat.
Hugs and stuff, alex

Peace! So American Beauty has been out for a little over 3 months now, and has been met with great results: including charting in the Top 10 on the CMJ Hip Hop charts for several weeks. Thank you for all of your support! When American Beauty was pressed, there were a limited number of promotional posters printed with it. Those that pre-ordered the album received one of these posters, autographed. If you did not pre-order the album, you still have a chance to get one. All you have to do is write a customer review of the album. It'll take you about 2 minutes, and you'll receive a limited edition, numbered, autographed poster from me. And love. Here's how to get your FREE AUTOGRAPHED POSTER in 3 easy steps: 1. Go to iTunes, CDBaby, and/or Amazon and pull up the product page for American Beauty. 2. Write a quick review of the album on one or all of these storefronts - remember to rate it, too! 3. Let me know you've written a review by sending an email with "American Beauty Reviewed" in the subject line, at either myspace, facebook, or beautyofamerica@gmail.com. Whichever is easiest for you. In the email, let me know where you wrote the review, and include your mailing address so I know where to send your poster. That's it! It'll really help get the word out a lot, and you'll receive a sweet poster in the process that you can sell on eBay in 5 years in exchange for a waffle that has the Virgin Mary's image. Thank you for being awesome. peace.love.respect., alexipharmic

*UPDATE* 8/9/09 The economy being what it is, the tour has had to adapt in size and scope. That being said, there will still be a number of concerts to raise money for the cause in the near future, but they will be more spread out. Stay tuned for the latest, and you will definitely be updated when a show comes through your area! peace.love.respect., alexipharmic *** Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is with great excitement that I announce to you the 2009 American Beauty Tour. Tons of brainstorming, planning, and research has gone into putting this together, and here's what you need to know about it.
What is the ABT (American Beauty Tour)?
The American Beauty Tour is national, non-profit music tour featuring some of the most socially conscious and fresh hip hop artists in the country, uniting with a shared vision to raise awareness and funds to fight childhood hunger and homelessness in America. 100% of the tour's net profits will be donated to our partner charity, Feed the Children, as well as to a local soup kitchen/food bank in each tour city.
When is the ABT?
The tour is planned to run from September 9th - October 20th, 2009.
Who is performing on the ABT?
Touring every city will be yours truly, Alexipharmic, alongside incredibly talented artists Macklemore and Sadistik. Braille, of Lightheaded, another amazing person and performer, will also be a part of many of these dates. Additionally, lots of other great emcees and djs will be joining up in each city and region.
Where is the ABT going to stop?
This is where YOU come in. There is a roadmap of projected cities over at the ABT Website, but any and all city suggestions are welcome. Do you have friends who are promoters? In charge of Associated Students at nearby colleges? Do you want the tour to stop in your city?
This tour is going to be a highly collaborative effort, and we are asking for YOUR help to make it happen.
If you have ideas, promoter/college/other contacts, please leave a comment on this bulletin, or send an email to info@americanbeautytour.com . Any and all support is highly encouraged and welcome.
Why the ABT?
Though this is an economically trying time for almost everyone, the said reality is that far too many children are hungry and homeless in our own backyard, and that is a number that will only grow as this recession deepens. However, I have no doubt that through a united commitment to raise awareness and work together, we can and will make a positive difference. We have the power to care for the poorest children in our neighborhoods.
Everyone involved really looks forward to rocking a stage near you, and putting on a great show for an amazing cause.
Thank you for being awesome.
peace.love.respect.,
Everyone with the American Beauty Tour.

So Facebook is pretty much the poo compared to myspace I've noticed. Less spam, ads, and stuff to weed through just to stay in touch with you. Which is something I definitely want to do.
Because of that, it would be pretty boss of you to add me on any of these facebook permutations. You'll get tons of fresh, new, and different content there!

Ladies & Gentlemen,
In April, I came out with an album called "American Beauty." It is available pretty much everywhere music is sold, and is a product I am proud of.
However, what I am the most proud of is this:
I just partnered with Portland-based global relief agency Mercy Corps. They are a 4-star, A-rated, $180 million dollar charity. It's kiiiiiiiiind of a cool thing.
What does that mean for you? 50% of all of the album's proceeds are donated to charity: specifically, Mercy Corps' relief efforts in the Congo.
Here's how it works. It's easy:
1. You go to iTunes, CDBaby, or Amazon . 2. You purchase a song from American Beauty, or purchase the entire album. 3. I get paid from one of those storefronts for my album sale (usually right around $10 after they take their cut). 4. I turn around and donate 1/2 of that sale to Mercy Corps. (So, around $5). 5. You listen to the music knowing your purchase provided a lot of clean water, sanitation, and firewood to boys, girls, men, and women in the Congo.
Now, for the release of American Beauty, we have a goal to reach.
Let's raise $5,000 for relief efforts in the Congo !
If you are unaware about what has been going on in the Congo, please click here.
I am doing this simply because it's something I believe in, and something I feel compelled to do. I feel I am only here because of the support of everyone around me, and it is therefore my duty and honor to give back as much as I can to help those in need.
So, if you like socially aware hip hop that doesn't preach or beat you over the head, you'll like American Beauty. The album features people from Rhymesayers (P.O.S.), Cas One, Braille, Grynch, and a dude that now produces for 50 Cent and Ghostface (MGI). And even if you don't care for hip hop, I still think you'll like it. I've been contacted by a fair amount of people that hated rap before, but actually enjoy it now because of the lyrics.
Also, if you don't feel like grabbing any of the music, I still urge you to donate to Mercy Corps' Congo Relief Efforts.
Support good music. Support good causes.
Keep being awesome.
Please spread the word.
And come back here each week. The fundraising total will be updated once a week.
*UPDATE 6.29.09* $485 Raised!

"Alexipharmic is a dope hip-hop artist with a story to tell, or should I say stories? Yea, stories! On this album, *American Beauty*, he combines the stories of people in which he met while on a 30 state tour with his own personal experiences & creates something so powerful, something with so much depth. His choice of beats, slightly unorthodoxed flow & bright perspective is definitely refreshing to my ears. I always say that just because something is different does not mean it's good, but this is damn great!
This album is inspirational & sheds light on a lot of the dark areas in today's society, revealing the truth! The album also features the likes of P.O.S., Cas One, Grynch, Sarah Smalley & Braille.
Below I have included two of my choice cuts from the *American Beauty* album which I honestly picked randomly because each track is dope & has a great message behind it. During each listen I got something different from his lyrics; that's what I like to call a jewel/gem."
5/25/09 Fensepost http://www.fensepost.com/main/2009/05/25/alexipharmic-american-beauty-album-review/
"Alexipharmic creates songs that seem to feel and breath a complete sense of impervious reality. You can drink his words like a fine scotch, or absorb them without discretion like a tall glass of PBR. His label debut American Beauty is the accumulative effort to reflect on the past years filled with oppression and unnecessary hatred. But this album also reflects upon the hope and promise this highly talented MC has always deemed not only possible to create a greater nation, but absolutely necessary. Alexipharmic’s songs are consistently titled with one word. One word describes the theme of said songs. And it only takes one single noun for this cat to make his point. Each track is like an instructional manual to what we need to know to realize what we need to build to obtain a beautiful existence. Sun, sex, beauty, stardust, life, and American are the complex nouns you will learn about on this tremendous wordsmith’s American Beauty. (Yes, “American” is not actually a noun, but this guy turns it into one you can not deny.) This dude writes songs for the people, about the people (garnering inspiration by a nation wide travel with tape recorder in hand, which can be heard on “American”). The folks breathing in the dust from the destruction of the skyscraper known as humanity. His lyrics are personally reflective, but speak for all those who feel neglected by some higher power. Which, these days, seems to feel like everybody. And American Beauty is a masterwork for expressing such causes of concern." -Written by Ron Trembath

My relationship with Hip Hop at present is a strained one at that
knowing quite well that today’s Hip Hop tends to be dipped in plastic
and having either little to no soul within its core structure. I mean
come on guys; you can only say ‘bitches, cars, nikes, skateboards, Ice
Creams, BAPE and money’ soooo many times before someone says ‘shut the
Fuck up!’
Alexipharmic is not one that falls into that
category; in fact his album is well thought-out and well written with
good, honest intensions. At first I was a little apprehensive to do a
review on a Hip Hop artist, but after reading the lovely press release
that details the process, it got to me.
It goes like this,
Alexipharmic’s album ‘American Beauty’ was written while on a 30 state,
10,000-mile road trip. Throughout the trek he carried a digital voice
recorder, which he used to interview countless men, women, and children
of all walks of life at each stop. Throughout the album’s 14 tracks,
Alexipharmic weaves the broad spectrum of the stories he recorded on
the road with his own, uniquely personal experiences. In addition,
topics that are uncomfortable or taboo are constantly addressed, simply
in an effort to encourage a more open dialogue. The result is an album
that breathes with energy and ambition, and reflects the hopes, broken
dreams, unity, division, optimism and voice of our current society
through the eyes of the 23 year-old Pacific Northwest native.
Okay
okay…..so I got that from the official press release, cut me some
slack! Anyway as stated, this under hip hop opus feels like a truck
driver’s road trip through American culture and life experiences having
a lot of emphasis on societal issues such as sex, Patriotism, The line
between the Rich and the Poor, homelessness and of course….Love.
Also the production value is top notch that compliments Alexipharmic word flow quite nicely.
‘American’
starts us off with Alexipharmic stating where he’s from (‘broadcasting
live from beautiful Seattle, Washington) with rocking violins, and the
usual hip hop beat that y’all know (kinda Jay Z-ish) as well as some
sound bytes from various people stating their view on America and its
values.
‘Sex’
has a gangly guitar playing while Alexipharmic raps on about our
favorite subject….The porn industry! There is a clever line form
Alexipharmic that goes, ‘the porn industry is shady, fake orgasm and women who could never have babies’ which is just snappy with wit, and you know what…..sex should be a beautiful thing!
‘Stardust’ featuring
P.O.S. is just pure passion driven lyrics with a beautiful vocal
backing. Alexipharmic goes spastic ala Cage from Definitive Jux. It’s
known to be the standout track from the album and I can see why.
‘Homecoming’ has this wonderful sample implemented within and some good backing vocals to boot.
‘Kings
is my personal anthem. It’s a parallel between subjectivity of guys
been douches and pricks and the relying of Maxin for beauty tips……or
more like how to treat your women like shit. I really love the hook of ‘He’s a great big douche but you love just the same’ which just makes me laugh. I think there is a flipside when Alexipharmic places the scenario on women when he utters ‘she’s a great big wish but you love just the same’. Fantastic!
‘Bend’ has
a bugle blowing within the entirety of the tune while Alexipharmic has
a verbal duel with Braille. I also like the weird sound byte and the
piano within the composition….tremendous!
‘Life’
is one competing tune that commands your attention. Why competing you
say?…..well it’s because this tune is the icing on the conscious rap
cake having all the thematic components relating to the titled of the
track as well as some very good harp string productions to boot. It has
some close relation to Common Market’s construct of conscious rap! It’s
an overall tear-jerker.
Now my only gripe that I can see
with this album is that at times it doesn’t hold anything
groundbreaking throughout the duration, I mean if you heard one
conscious rap act, then I’m sure you’ve heard them all.
However…..despite
the concept not being brand new or anything, I couldn’t help but put my
hands to the side and not click on the skip feature. I really did love
every minute of it! It’s heartfelt, warm, humorous, socially aware and
witty.
Alexipharmic does state his philanthropic nature as
proceeds of this album goes to Mercy Corps. In fact the album cover too
has a hidden visual element of little mosaics (having images of the
homeless) compiling to make the overall image of…I guess an American
Beauty.
So do yourself a huge favor, and get this album!
You’ll feel like a better person knowing that Alexipharmic (the zen
buddhist that raps) tries to put decent American values in a good
light….because most Yanks tend to be….you know what!
5/3/09 Welikeit.Indie http://blog.welikeitindie.com/2009/05/meet-alexipharmic/
Born & raised in Port Angeles, WA, before moving to L.A., Alexipharmic immersed himself in the world of hip-hop va Yo! MTV Raps & cassettes of 2pac, Nas, & Biggie, before picking up the pen at 13 & working to forge his own path. That journey has led him to slam poetry showcases at the fanous Project Blowed, performances with musical icons Jurassic 5, Visionaries, One.Be.Lo, Sleep, Sweatshop Union, C-Rayz Walz, Vakill, & Grayskull, among others, & spearheading the national Save Darfur Tour. Behind of all the musical aspirations is a compulsion to use the music as something greater: to give back to the interwoven human condition. To that end, Alexipharmic has donated 50% of his music proceeds to charity. To date thousands have been raised for many worthy causes! KUDOS my man!
Last month, Alexipharmic released American Beauty, his debut on his own label. The album was written while ona 30 state, 10,000 mile road trip. Throughout the trek he carried a digital voice recorder, which he used to interview countless men, women & children of all walks of life at each stop. Throughout the album’s 14 tracks, Alexipharmic weaves the broad spectrum of the stories he recorded on the road with his own, uniquely personal experiences. In addition, topics that are uncomfortable or taboo are constantly addressed, simply in an effort to encourage a more open dialogue. The result is an album that breathes with energy & ambition, reflects the hopes, broken dreams, unity, division, optimism, & voice of our current society through the eyes of this 23 year-old.
If you are not inspired, then I don’t know what will! Listen to the album & below find freebie courtesy of Alexipharmic himself. The song features P.O.S., Cas One, Grynch, & Sarah Smalley.
This fall Alexipharmic will embark on a national tour in support of American Beauty. He has partnered with Feed the Children & will donate 100% of the tour’s net proceeds to combat child hunger & homelessness in America. I will announce the dates as soon as they are revealed. Stay tuned!
5/3/09 Snobs Music http://www.snobsmusic.net/2009/05/alexipharmic-american-beauty-album.html
Regular readers will undoubtedly have noticed that we don't cover a lot of hip hop here. However, once in a while there's an artist that comes around with something different that warrants talking about. Alexipharmic and his new album American Beauty is one of those artists. The Pacific Northwest is not a place you would expect to stumble across a socially conscious rapper. But that's the roots of Alexipharmic. It's pretty apparent from the very first verse of "American" that Alexipharmic has an agenda. His highly personal raps run the gamut of what his perceived injustices, including homelessness, war, STDs, body image, and poverty. Those topics are juxtaposed against the bright, often fun beats of the music. There's some nice funk guitar sprinkled on tracks like "Beauty" as well. It's an interesting technique, but one that doesn't always work. From time-to-time the music can carry the listener away, distracting them from the message Alexipharmic is trying to deliver. Alexipharmic, a self-described "Zen Buddhist that raps" is joined by a plethora of guest musicians and producers. The best of these is the appearance of Minneapolis rapper P.O.S. on "Stardust". Even the cover art is designed to impart Alexipharmic's message. A collage of pictures of hundreds of homeless Americans is cleverly used to create a larger image of an "American Beauty". Unlike a lot of artists Alexipharmic definitely puts his money where his mouth is. Half of the net proceeds from the album and 100% of the net tour proceeds will go to homeless and children's charities. While American Beauty isn't enough to make me embrace the hip hop genre wholeheartedly, it is a worthy cause and a solid record. Best tracks: "Colossus", "Beauty"
Rating: 6.5/10
4/29/09 AW Music http://awmusic.ca/2009/04/28/alexipharmic-american-beauty-review-interview/ "I still remember the first hip hop track I ever heard – The year was 1990. The words “So you’re a philosopher?” opened the track. A response of “Yes” and “I think very deeply” was scratched out on a turntable. Then it hit. The beat in a four-four timing with a heavy bass line became my instant intoxication. Boogie Down Productions were my gateway to a whole new sound; a whole new world that I was entering with open eyes. A desire to fully understand this music, it’s origins and everything it had to offer. I quickly latched on to hip hop and the more I listened, the more I started to understand not only the art of writing rhymes, but more importantly the message that was being presented. A form of true expression. The ability to tell one’s deepest story and have it relate to the struggle of life we all face. I could always see the feeling behind every word that was said, even with being a white boy brought up in a suburban setting. To me that wasn’t important. I also had problems and hip hop became an outlet, helping me understand the issues of others and the ability to tackle my own. Ok, why the nostalgic relapse? This just makes me realize the true essence of hip hop, which is something we all need nowadays. The business has taken certain elements from the original form and bastardized it so much we are now left with a completely new genre. A catalogue of club songs made up almost entirely of hooks and littered with vocoders, all being produced by the same handful of people. I can’t say I listen to hip hop without someone automatically assuming I mean this commercial garbage. Why do I have to stress that what I listen to is underground and conscious? Hip hop was derived from the underground and brought forth with a conscious message. It’s a shame this isn’t recognized by the masses. Maybe they don’t get it, but there is a continually growing scene dedicated to the music, the message and the still ever growing struggle with life. I’m reminded of this every day as I find new artists with their own stories. An abundance of talent that lurks beneath the surface of mainstream rap. This became even more apparent with an email I received last week. Based out of Seattle, Alexipharmic looks to be the epitome of conscious rap, with a selfless approach to spreading his word. He is completely aware of social issues that not only surround him, but the rest of the world and wishes to let it be known the life struggles of all. His most recent album ‘American Beauty’ is a showcase in his attempts to open people’s eyes to the amazing things America has to offer; those things that are all too often clouded with constant force-fed imagery of turmoil and destruction. An awakening to the realities that make up what is often seen as a disgusting nation by others. The very root of America is it’s citizens. Beautiful, heart warming people that, like everyone else, are just trying to make it in this world. A reflection of this is displayed in the front cover, collected images of homeless men and women brought together in a mosaic form depicting the face of America. One of the best album covers I’ve seen in a long time. His opening track ‘American’ features clips from everyday people interviewed on a thirty state tour, all giving their views on what makes their country, lives, loves, values, downfalls and everything in between. A theme based on what America is and what it can be…. What it needs to overcome. A message that being rich is a full heart, not a bank account. We all have one life, make it yours because in the end we all turn to dust. As I work my way through the album I begin to get a clear picture of who Alexipharmic is, as a person. He opens his soul with each song; stories of his growth into the man he is today, the affects of losing someone close, sex as a special moment of respect for both parties more than a means to just get off. He helps us to understand life is a series of dreams we all make for ourselves. In order to really live, you must dream. You must have a voice, an opinion and a means to make your vision stronger. To stand for something and use your power to fight for beliefs, a message we have to regain. A collection of lyrics that really make sense and hit close to home, whether or not a citizen of America. These are messages for humanity. ‘American Beauty’ features a few guest appearances including P.O.S., Cas One, Grynch, Sarah Smalley and Braille. With intense lyrics and production from MGI, Budo, Elliot B, DJ Figure and Infekt, each track grabs your deep inner being and thrusts you into the importance of thought. Although Alexipharmic has prior releases, ‘American Beauty’ is his debut on his label Elephant Memories. He has also let it be known that 50% of all ‘American Beauty’ album sales will go to the Portland based charity Mercy Corps. He is also putting together the American Beauty Tour, which is set for fall, where he has teamed up with the Feed The Children foundation and will donate 100% of the net proceeds to help homeless and underprivileged children across the U.S. As I said before, this man is truly selfless. With a vision of a better life and world for everyone, we should all take a hold of his message. Alexipharmic is that of what I remember hip hop being. A true form of expression with a message you can not only hear and understand, but also feel. It’s amazing to have these feelings come back…. Gives us hope for the state of music and our state of life." - Oliver Corby, AW Music
4/28/09Vinyl Meltdown http://vinylmeltdown.com/2009/04/alexipharmic-american-beauty/ "Alexipharmic is a 23-year-old MC with a message. But unlike a good deal of other politically-charged, socially conscious rappers with a message, he speaks with actions over and above his words. On his upcoming tour to promote American Beauty, Alexipharmic will donate 100% of the net proceeds to charity. But wait, there’s more. 50% of American Beauty’s net sales will be donated to charity as well. These are major numbers, folks, and if nothing else, these numbers are a damn good reason to buy the album. In our CREAM-obsessed society, for any artist to donate any portion of their proceeds is rare. But for a relatively unknown “starving artist”-type to do so is not only unheard of, but worthy of the utmost respect.
Moving onto the content, American Beauty is a solid effort from the young MC. The album features topically diverse raps, utterly enjoyable production, and quality guest appearances. Alexipharmic is a bona fide storyteller who attempts to give a voice to the countless stories that go untold in America. The most salient feature of Alexipharmic’s rapping is his emotion. It’s apparent from songs like “Atefah,” “Homecoming,” and “Elephants” that he’s not simply paying lip service when he raps; he’s spitting what he believes. Nevertheless, it seems that Alexipharmic still has some growing to do as an MC. Whereas one moment he’ll spit a profound, well-structured multisyllabic string of rhymes, the next he’ll spit a tired Kanye-esque rhyme (“Staying up late to watch TGIF on Fridays, watching Urkel on TV made me thank God for Fridays”) or a line lacking breath control. Moreover, some of the songs on the album are comical in their strangeness (“Sex” and “Kings”), and it’s unclear whether or not they’re meant to be. Still, Alexipharmic can hold his own on the mic, and if he continues to elevate his skills, he should be a potent force in years to come. And even though Alexipharmic does his thing on American Beauty, the star of the album is the production. Although the album features production from five different beatmakers (Budo, MGI, Elliot B, DJ Figure, and Infekt), the beats are so impressively consistent that it genuinely feels like the American Beauty soundscape is the result of one painter’s dexterous brushstroke. The album is full of buoyant, melodious beats that carry the listener from track to track without any unpleasant bumps along the way. If you can get your hands on this album, shell out the spare change that it’ll take you to buy it. Good music plus a good cause? ‘Nuff said." - gilmore
4/28/09 Underground Hip Hop (All Day) http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=58002282&blogId=480293797 Review by Stephanie Zalinger (Denver, CO)
"Hailing from the rainiest city in America, Seattle, WA, comes a ray of sunlight for the hip-hop community. Alexipharmic's first label debut CD American Beauty is just what the scene has been patiently waiting for. With guest appearances by Grynch, Cas One, POS, Sarah Smalley and Braille and produced by Mgi, Infekt, Budo, Elliot B and DJ Figure, American Beauty is a collection of politically charged songs along with humane songs such as Atefah and even a song dedicated to sex. With all the mainstream songs out there that glorify sex without reminding us of the consequences, Alexipharmic does a tremendous job of doing just that. "Sex is a beautiful beautiful thing unless STD test cloud up your dreams." This is something you would never hear from a mainstream artist and it takes a courageous artists to lay it out like it really is.
After the Good Side of Bad Vol. 2 came out on digital copy, Alexipharmic has proven himself to be a valuable gem in the world of hip-hop. With all the Ray-J's, T-Pain's and Lil Wayne's out there who speak not from their heart but their wallets, Alexipharmic proves that this does not have to be so to create an instrumental and incredible album. Alexipharmic reminds us to look outside of ourselves and view reality for what it is. I cannot listen to American Beauty without thinking about other people and other places. The hip-hop scene is lucky to have Alexipharmic. And, just to prove my point more that Alexipharmic makes music from his heart, half off all proceeds go to Mercy Corps, a charity whose mission is to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping build secure, productive and just communities. Alexipharmic never fails to impress me musically and mentally. American Beauty is just one more stepping stone for his unselfish musical career. I highly recommend getting American Beauty and telling all of your friends about it as well. You will not be disappointed and just might come out a little more aware of yourself and the world with his words."

Current mood: amorous

Here is the full text, but you should click that link to give their site some love, plus their layout is WAY more boss:
"I was truly inspired by Alexipharmic when I introduced him a couple weeks ago. Get to know him a bit more with this exclusive Qs.
Describe Alexipharmic in 3 words… Peace.Love.Respect.
How many instruments to do you play? I play the vocal chords like nobody’s business…
Worst live show experience? At The Abbey in Chicago, there were 200 people in the audience for me when I was the opening act. During the set, about half of them turned around and went back to the bar. It taught me to put on a very, very good live show, instead of a not so good one.
First record you ever bought and where did you buy it? Michael Jackson – Bad. It was the first tape I ever bought for my Walkman, and I bought it at Payless. I was a pretty hard kid…
Last illegal download? Annie Lennox – Walking on Broken Glass. I’m feeling sort of mid-90’s today.
What are you listening to right now? My inner monologue. It’s like listening to a really unsunspenseful book on tape…
What posters did you have on your wall as a kid? Shawn Kemp dunking over Shawn Bradley, Ken Griffey Jr. making an amazing catch, and a Mandy Moore life-size, cardboard standee.
Name one song you’d hate to have stuck in your head. The song that never ends, cause it’d go on and on, my friend…
Name 3 things you need when you travel. I.D. because I look like I’m 13 sometimes, iPod, and Dramamine.
What is your favorite thing you own? My lyric book and stack of Pilot G2 pens.
When you are out on the town, what is your drink of choice? Whatever’s on tap…usually water, because I’m lame like that…
Stupidest thing you’ve done in the last 12 months? Fronted money for a promoter that said they would “pay me back…”
Complete this sentence: In the future… … a spaceship with a crew of 4 crashes down on a distant planet. One of the crewmembers dies, and the other 3 head out to explore. They then find intelligent apes inhabit the planet. Two of the men are killed. The other, Alexipharmic, befriends some of the apes but is feared by most. After being put through ape trial he escapes with a female human native, Megan Fox, to the planet. After helping his ape friends escape a religious heresy trial he escapes out into the wilderness with the female, and the two make sweet, passionate love. There he learns the planet might not be so distant after all, but the companionship he was longing for was right under his nose the whole time…
Tell us a fact about yourself that probably nobody knows. I’m a pretty good sushi chef.
What’s next? Checking out some more new artists on Welikeit.indie, working on four albums simultaneously, and putting together the American Beauty Tour. Thanks for the great questions, Ruben!
P.S. Shawn Kemp totally ruled back in the 90s."

5/8/09 Comfort Comes http://www.comfortcomes.com/2009/05/08/alexipharmic-good-side-of-bad-vol-2/
"Alexipharmic’s third self released album, Good Side of Bad Vol. 2, is another demonstration of the selfless embodiment this “conscious” artist has never failed to portray. His brutally honest view of the struggle and pain of those uncared for in this nation of ours is as compassionate as it is lyrically dramatic. At first listen, this Northwest repping and big word bending artist may sound similar to many of his peers in the left corner of the map. But, there are several facts that differentiate him from equally talented in their own way acts such as Grayskul or Grynch or Blue Scholars. The lack of foul language for the most part without being a Will Smith like self indulged jerk off is one great aspect. The home loving cut “PNW” could easily be a highlight. As well as the socially threatening “Downfall”. And would be plain wrong not to mention the acapella message to the nation “Freedom.” Alexipharmic spits more soul into the eyes of the greedy than even he could fathom. And Good Side Of Bad Vol. 2 is a wonderful experiment in the world of personal and community betterment through gentle chaos. Being a “conscious” rapper has seemed to be a gimmick in our High School Musical friendly world. But, don’t get it twisted, this what think before you flow artists were meant to sound like. The pop world should take note." Ron Trembath, Comfort Comes

I feel completely honored to have received such great questions for an interview. Check it out! (Courtesy of Oliver Corby, awmusic.ca - link and complete text below) http://awmusic.ca/2009/04/28/alexipharmic-american-beauty-review-interview/ "I sent Alexipharmic a couple questions to gain some more insight to who he is on both a personal and professional level. What I got back blew me away, so I wanted to share it:
You say your album was written while on the road and that you interviewed people from all walks of life on your stops. The first track ‘American’ has various samples of people’s opinions on America, are these from some of the people you got to talk to? How was it being able to stretch across those 30 states and connect with people on that level? I was incredibly fortunate to be able to take that trip the summer after graduating college. Visited friends and family I hadn’t seen in years, went to 15 baseball stadiums, explored a lot of cities, and - most importantly - met a ton of interesting people. It was initially pretty awkward to go up to complete strangers and ask them questions out of the blue, with a tape recorder in hand. Some people thought I was soliciting them and didn’t even let me get to the point of “hey, this is for an album I’m putting together” before they high-tailed it in the other direction. However, the more confident and comfortable I became in my approach, the more easily it was to carry a completely random 15-20 minute conversation. Out of a lot of these conversations came the samples that you hear on “American.” What I found was that a lot of the reason people were shy at first was because they’d never really been given the chance to speak their mind about the state of everything…but once they got going, it was almost a cathartic experience - like they were anonymously getting a load off their chest. Met a lot of really cool people, so it was awesome. A fair amount of the sound bytes also came from fans calling a digital voicemail that I slapped on all my websites, and leaving messages about their thoughts on a whole range of topics. There were hours upon hours to edit through, but it was a great process. Did you find a common theme with what most people had to say about their country? Even though people talked about tons of different topics, it seemed that a common theme underlying almost all of it was their desire to see something…anything…change for the better. Now, I’m sure almost all of their definitions of “better” were vastly different, and it wasn’t all political either. Some people just wanted a change for their better in their job, their relationships, their lot in life. Pretty much everyone had their silver linings, but when it came to thoughts about the country, I’d say change was a big constant (cliché as that may sound these days). Your lyrics are very consciously centered and you speak about the truths that surround people on a daily basis.. How do you feel about the abundance of generic hip hop and the lack of a real message it displays to those in this scene nowadays and do you see a return of true progression, or a constant downfall in mainstream rap? Since I was born in 1985, I feel that my experience of living through hip hop is a bit limited. Even though I rocked YO! MTV Raps pretty much since I learned how to tie my shoes, I missed out on Rakim, KRS, Flash, Freddy, etc. when they were all brand new, and so I don’t really know what it was like to live in the scene back then and can’t comment on it from the beginning. But I can say in my own experience of being a fan of hip hop, the staple “money, cars, hoes” generic rap has seemed to have slowly eroded socially aware hip hop over the last decade or so. I thought we hit the bottom of the barrel content-wise with Ja Rule, but it’s insane seeing what its come to in the last couple years. Video-wise and musically. Its almost come to the point where “hip hop” songs are nothing but an indecipherable hook or a dance like the stanky leg that goes with it. I mean…really? Its gotten so bad that I’m looking back on the days of Ja Rule with nostalgia. (But I can’t front, I rocked Rule 336 back in the day). All that ranting aside, though, I can’t knock the rappers that make it, or the record label CEO’s that manufacture it, or the public that buys it. Most rappers want to be famous, CEO’s want to make money, and people want to dance at clubs. As long as there’s a demand, it will always be there. And I don’t think all of it has to have meaning…sometimes you just want to get stupid to an amazing beat and don’t really care about the words…at least I know I do now and again. But honestly, I think it’s only a matter of time until it gets so bad that people say, “Aright, hold on. Someone please rap about something that you actually know” and then the generic hip hop will swing back into the progressive being popular again. Outkast, Nas, The Roots, Talib…those guys are still around and making incredible music as they always have. And then you have amazing independent artists in Atmosphere, Sage, Ali, P.O.S., etc. that have grinded tirelessly and carved a completely brand new and incredibly loyal fanbase for themselves that I think will stick with them for a long time as they achieve more and more commercial success…the independent will take over the mainstream eventually. You’re very big on social issues. What sparked the 50% of album proceeds going to charity? How did you get involved in the Save Darfur Tour and Feed The Children foundation for the American Beauty tour? Honestly, I can’t pinpoint anything in particular that really sparked the 50% going to charity. It’s just something that always made sense to me to do. The way I see it, the only reason I’m able to be alive and do the things I do is because of a ton of sacrifices made by people around me - friends, family, and complete strangers alike - have allowed me to be here right now doing what I love. Now, a lot of what I’ve accomplished is because of the hard work I have put into it myself, that’s true. But I wouldn’t have even had the chance had the cards not fallen in my favor at some point down the line. So it’s my duty, my compulsion, and my blessing to be able to give back. I’d do 100% if I could, but then I wouldn’t be able to eat. The Save Darfur Tour and American Beauty Tour were both just extensions of this same paradigm. I created the Save Darfur Tour because I wanted to help the victims of the ongoing struggle in Darfur, and so I thought, “hey, why not create a tour.” At 21, and never having done a tour at that point, I had no idea what I was in for logistically when it comes to all the pieces of touring…securing the artists, travel, promotion, booking, etc…and I can definitely admit I was grossly unprepared for a lot of it. But the tour raised a lot of awareness, most of the shows had great attendance, a lot of really great artists that had never really met one another got to perform and travel together, and I learned a lot. That learning is definitely translating over into the American Beauty Tour. I’m really looking forward to the partnership with Feed the Children and helping to raise awareness of and feed hungry and homeless kids in the US. You’re a Zen Buddhist, right? Did that come before or after your start making hip hop? Does it impact in how or what you write? That’s definitely the closest philosophy or religion with which I align, and it came before I started writing. I got exposed to Buddhism around 10, 11 years old, and really started getting into it a couple years later. I was raised Lutheran at a really laid back church with an incredibly humble, noble, and genuine pastor, but it just wasn’t really for me. I’m not sure why, but I’m just not really wired to fully have faith in god, or really even worry about that. Zen definitely influences how I write, for sure. One of the main tenants of Buddhism is just being present in the here and now, and making the most of the moment right now. Because, really, that’s the only thing that’s tangible, that’s real. So it helps me to focus on being completely present when I write and trying to communicate clearly and with as much truth as possible. Some of the themes that underlie a lot of my lyrics - making the most of the present, not worrying about god or some after life in order to make heaven on earth, helping the world around you - can be traced to a lot of Buddhist philosophy. You say that ‘American Beauty’ is your label debut, but you also have a few other album ‘Good Side of Bad volume 1 & 2′ and ‘Run’. It’s the label debut because it’s the first album I’ve officially released under a label. I suppose it’s sort of splitting hairs a bit, but Run was released before I really understood how a lot of music works, and it was completely fly by the seat of my pants. The beats were made to songs I already had written, and the producer approached me with beats he made to the lyrics, and so it wasn’t really an organic album that came together the way they usually do. The Good Side of Bads are B-Side EPs more or less. They are really fun to make, but aren’t full and complete albums like American Beauty. Tell me a bit about the Elephant Memories label. How did that come to form? Senior year of college I investigated setting up an LLC, getting my business license, and started brainstorming names for the label. I had about 50 ideas, but Elephant Memories just stuck out to me. I thought it sounded cool, and the meaning behind it comes from the theory that elephants remember their ancestors and can go to a graveyard and pick them out…they have reverence for where they came from. So the mission statement of EM - “Respect the past. Progress the present. Protect the future.” - comes from the idea of elephants never forgetting. Musically what this means to me is to pay respect to the legends of true hip hop by making progressive music that empowers the listener and lays a socially conscious foundation for the future…at least that’s the hope. If you had to sum up your goals in life for hip hop and humanity, what would they be? Oh man…how much time do you got? Since I’ve rambled quite a bit in the previous questions, I’ll sum it up like this… Life/Humanity Goals: Help others realize their full potential. Do well by doing good. Leave the world a little better than it was before I got here. Be truly happy. Have an English bulldog named Lola. Hip Hop: Always give 50% of my net profits to charity. Make music that is relatable, has a message, and is enjoyable to listen to. Perform with Nas, Outkast, Atmosphere, Brother Ali, P.O.S., and Devin the Dude…all at the same show. A big thanks to Alexipharmic for the chance to review ‘American Beauty’ and helping to remind me that there’s more going on in this world than what’s outside my front door.
