An ALF Interview

The Animal Liberation Front

For animal rights' activists there has long been debate, and some division, about how their work should be carried out. Some activists believe in writing strong letters to companies that perform animal experiments, other animal lovers abstain from eating meat or consuming any animal products; and some activists work to change laws at the governmental level.

Within the animal rights' movement there is another faction that believes in direct action to 'liberate' animals from suffering. Exalted as heroes and heroines by some, and branded terrorists by others – the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) is a worldwide philosophy of liberating animals from oppression. The ALF has two main mandates: save as many animals as possible and wreck as much economic havoc as possible, on the institutions that are harming the animals.

We caught up with Dr. Jerry W. Vlasak, an American MD who is a volunteer Press Officer for the North American Animal Liberation Press Office, to ask some questions about the ALF's form of animal activism and how animal rights is linked to the environmental crisis we currently face as a global community.

Why does the ALF exist?

The ALF exists to disrupt, financially cripple, and eventually bring to an end any industry that profits from the exploitation of animals. It is the result of a failure of more mainstream attempts to bring about change on behalf of non-human animals being exploited, imprisoned, tortured and killed by humans.

Is there a leader in the ALF or are there separate 'cells' that work independently?

The ALF is made up of cells that act independently of any centralized command structure. No person in any cell knows the identity or location of any member of any other cell. This lack of 'command structure' makes it incredibly difficult for the police to do any significant damage to the movement, because even if they were able to infiltrate a cell, the chances are very slim that they would be able to arrest more than 3 or 4 people. This also allows groups to decide for themselves what targets are important to them and what tactics they feel would be most effective.

If you asked a holocaust survivor if they thought that the 'aggressive tactics' used to liberate Auschwitz were a little too heavy-handed, what reaction do you suppose you would get?
—Dr. Jerry W. Vlasak

How is someone defined as a member of the ALF?

This is one of the most common questions we receive at the press office. It might help to think of the ALF less as an 'organization' and more as a 'banner of beliefs and tactics' that people operate under. Anyone who takes action to free animals from exploitation, and who takes all precautions to not to harm any animals, human or non-human, can claim that action as an ALF action.

Animal experiments

What is the main focus of the work the ALF is doing?

There are two main goals behind ALF actions. The first is obviously to remove as many animals as possible from fur farms, vivisection labs, and other areas of abuse. The second is to cause as much economic damage to these industries and persons as possible.

How many actions are ALF members organizing each year?

Just within North and South America, there are hundreds of actions every year, so it would be a pretty safe estimate that around the world, there are thousands of actions every year. Especially once you take into account the number of actions that are taken and for which no communiqué is issued.

Are there any estimates on how many members are in the ALF?

It's doubtful that there is anyone in the world who would have an accurate number of how many people are involved in ALF cells at any given time.

So, is the ALF a global movement?

Absolutely. Wherever there are people willing to abuse animals for profit, the ALF is there to stop them. The UK and United States are the countries with the most active cells, but there are groups operating in dozens of countries worldwide.

10 billion animals die every year. And the number keeps rising. If there were a critique to be made, it would be that the animal liberation movement, as a whole, has not been aggressive enough.
—Dr. Jerry W. Vlasak

How is our treatment of animals connected to the current environmental crisis?

There are two obvious connections that come to mind. The first is the U.N. report which stated that factory farming is responsible for more green house gases than all cars, trucks, and motorcycles combined. Therefore, anyone who is concerned trying to stop global warming should try starting with a vegan lifestyle.

Secondly, the animals and the environment both suffer from the same shortsighted quest for financial gain. The lust for a quick buck is pushing the entire planet to the absolute breaking point. This mindset sees old growth forests, oceans, and animals (both human and non human) as nothing more than 'renewable' resources. And of course, as we humans destroy the planet, we also destroy the habitat of all other species of animals as well.

Animal liberation

Can we 'heal' the planet while still treating animals so unkindly?

Absolutely not. There is no acceptable halfway solution to our treatment of animals and the environment.

Since 911, has anything changed in the way ALF members are legally defined?

There are certainly longer prison sentences being handed down now than there ever have been before, but the "terrorism" term has been applied since the very beginning. The main difference is that above ground groups of law abiding citizens are now being targeted with the same fear-mongering tactics.

The fact is that people who take illegal action for animals know that what they are doing is illegal and that, if caught, they will go to jail. The 'eco-terrorism' and 'animal enterprise terrorism' legislation that we've seen over the past few years is specifically designed to stop legal, above ground protests, and to stop activists from using their First Amendment rights, and has little or no effect on clandestine groups or actions.

More than 10 billion animals die every year due to human consumption. That's more than 300 animals every second of every minute of every single day. And that statistic only takes into account food animals...
—Dr. Jerry W. Vlasak

Why are there such conflicting views about the ALF?

There seem to be two main reasons for this 'Heroes/Terrorists' debate. The first is with the general public who are repeatedly sold the 'eco-terrorists' and 'animal rights extremists' propaganda by the media. One of the primary purposes of the Press Office is to combat this misinformation and present a rational explanation for why people would engage in illegal activities for the sake of animals. The general public doesn't tend to know the truth about these subjects, not by any lack of effort on our part, but rather because we are a volunteer organization fighting against multi-billion-dollar ad campaigns and media spin. The truth has a way of sneaking out through the cracks though, and we are confident that the average person will come down on our side for most of these issues once they are confronted with accurate depictions of them.

The second, and in our opinion, more disturbing conflict, comes from within the animal rights community itself. According to FDA statistics, more than 10 billion animals die every year due to human consumption. That's more than 300 animals every second of every minute of every single day. And that statistic only takes into account food animals, so the number goes up when you start to add in all of the animals on fur farms, in vivisection labs, circuses and rodeos, not to mention companion animals killed in 'shelters'.

Instead of fighting for the lives of these animals, there are those among us who would rather spend their time squabbling over tactics. They spend endless hours debating the pros and cons of animal liberation. Is property destruction a 'valid' tactic? Does arson go too far? These conversations are all well and good in the relative comfort of your apartment or a lecture hall, but the animals who are awaiting their guaranteed death sentences in cages and pens all around the world don't have the luxury of waiting. They need action and they need it right now.

How does the ALF communicate with the press office?

ALF cells communicate with the press office through anonymous communiqués that are either sent to our post office box or emailed to us.

How does the press office communicate with the ALF?

The press office does not know the identities of anyone involved in the ALF, therefore we have no way of contacting or communicating with any of them.

Why do you think the work of ALF is important?

The work of the ALF is important because it saves lives. It really is that simple. It can take an organization with hundreds of volunteers years of their time and millions of dollars to pass legislation increasing the size of battery cages by a few square inches. On the other hand, a half dozen dedicated people on a factory farm can save hundreds, if not thousands of lives in a single evening. Two or three person teams on mink farms regularly empty sheds that housed 6 to 10 thousand animals, and this can be done in less than 4 hours. Add to that the cost of replacing torn down fences and destroyed equipment, and the costs to that farm starts to rise. Tack on upgraded security and increased insurance bills, and more than a few farms have cracked under the pressure, closing down and never killing another animal.

Historically, those wishing to participate in direct action have gotten together with others they could trust of like mind and just started doing actions.
—Dr. Jerry W. Vlasak

Are you ever harassed for your involvement with the ALF?

No one involved with the Press Office has any direct involvement in the ALF. Our job is merely to post communiqués sent to us and to handle any inquiries from the media. That being said, we do come under considerable scrutiny by the police/FBI due to the fact that we are the above ground face of the below-ground animal liberation movement. To name a few examples, press officers in the past have been followed, had their phones wire tapped, had their homes raided and their computers and other belongings confiscated.

Are we going to see more animal suffering if the FDA approves the use of genetically modified animals?

It's too early to tell what, exactly, the vivisection and agriculture industries intend for cloned and genetically modified animals, but given their past track record, it will undoubtedly be horrific.

How can people get involved if they want to help animals?

The first thing we would suggest to anyone who is interested in helping animals would be adopting a vegan lifestyle. It's hard to be taken seriously as an animal rights' activist if you're still eating or wearing animals.

Activism-wise, there is no end to the ways in which people can get involved. Depending on where you live, there are probably already groups in your area. Go to any internet search engine and type in 'animal rights' and the name of your town, and something close to you will almost definitely pop up. Contact a few local groups, go to some of their meetings, see how you feel about their general message and attitude and go from there. If you can't find any groups in your area who seem to share your ideas, don't be afraid to do things on your own.

Historically, those wishing to participate in direct action have gotten together with others they could trust of like mind and just started doing actions. They might begin learning about direct action with the link below and then see where that takes them. Each individual can decide what action to take, when to get started, and how much longer the animals must wait for liberation.

Most of all, whatever course of action you decide to take on behalf of animals, don't ever give up. The animals can't fight their own battle, and they need each of us to fight as hard as we can for them.

The ALF is often criticized for using aggressive tactics. Do you think there are ever times when violence or aggression should be used as a form of protest?

If you asked a holocaust survivor if they thought that the 'aggressive tactics' used to liberate Auschwitz were a little too heavy-handed, what reaction do you suppose you would get? If you suggested that perhaps a better tactic would have been to organize a huge letter- writing campaign and hold candle light vigils outside the gates, do you think they'd laugh at the stupidity of it? Or would they spit in your face for suggesting that their life held so little value to you that you could afford to waste precious years being polite rather than fighting for them?

10 billion animals die every year. And the number keeps rising. If there were a critique to be made, it would be that the animal liberation movement, as a whole, has not been aggressive enough. Only time will tell if that is to change.

An excerpt from a Steve best interview.....
(very long version can be found here):
http://milwaukee.indymedia.org/en/2005/01/202662.shtml

I came out in favor of the ALF because after careful study of their history, arguments, and results, I concluded that their actions are effective, necessary, and just. Governments, animal exploitation industries, and most mass media characterize the ALF as violent terrorists, but I see them as freedom fighters and counter-terrorists. The ALF is a new justice movement defending innocent beings under attack and fighting the real terrorists who torture and kill animals without justification.

Breaking and entering locked buildings, smashing fur store windows, torching delivery trucks — it all sounds nothing short of vandalism or even terrorism. But I believe ALF actions are defensible because (1) what happens to animals is wrong, and (2) legal channels to stop it are blocked by speciesism and corrupt governments that support the property rights of industries over the moral rights of animals.

radiation

I believe that no door, no law, no profit margin, no government, and no cop should ever stand in the way between an animal and its freedom. I wish that legal methods of animal liberation were adequate to free animals from their oppressors, but unfortunately they are not. Governments are grotesquely corrupt and speciesist and serve their corporate masters. Animals are too important a resource and commodity for corporations to voluntarily free them, and so animal liberation requires militant tactics such as raids to rescue animals and property destruction to weaken, cripple, or eliminate oppressors.

It is unfortunate that the problem of animal exploitation is so extreme that some people have been moved to take extreme measures to address it. We should direct our moral criticism to the causes of the ALF, rather than the ALF response to them.

If you do not support the ALF, you need a lesson in history and a logical consistency check. Despite the lies of the corporate-state-media complex, and the ignorance of many animal advocates, the ALF has nothing to do with Al Qaeda, the SS, or the Republican Guard that tyrannized the Iraqi people before Bush-Cheney got their turn. The ALF is the animal rights version of the Underground Railroad, the anti-Nazi resistance movement, and contemporary peace and justice struggles. Like the Underground Railroad, the ALF breaks the law in order to rescue exploited animal slaves and shuttle them to freedom in loving homes. Like the anti-Nazi resistance, the ALF will smash the oppressors' property and any implements of violence or death in order to slow down or stop their killing machines.

Unlike some brave warriors fighting Nazis, however, the ALF has never used physical violence against any animal exploiter. And like all contemporary movements fighting for peace, justice, and human rights, the ALF intends to help secure all these values for the most defenseless victims of all, the animals who are utterly dependent upon us for their liberation.

The ALF belongs to the long and noble traditions of direct action and civil disobedience that include the Quakers, Henry David Thoreau, Harriet Tubman, the Suffragettes, Mohandas Gandhi, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. From the Boston Tea Party to the Battle of Seattle, there are important historical anticipations of or parallels to the ALF whenever oppressed people find they have to break the law and destroy property in order to realize ideals of freedom, rights, justice, and democracy.

Whereas some argue that property destruction is violence, the ALF correctly identifies itself as a non-violent movement — one that attacks only the property of animal exploiters, and never the exploiters themselves in order to stop their obscene violence, create conditions of peace, and rescue animals from their bloody hands. Only in our perverse capitalist world, one that values property over life, does it make sense to demonize the ALF and elevate these freedom fighters – these counter-terrorists — to Public Enemy 1 on the domestic terrorism list. The real terrorists occupy the corporate suites and highest political offices of the land. They wear suits, not balaclavas; they terrorize with money and banks not guns and bombs. Their actions are legal, but what does that tell you about the scandal of the law?

The defense of direct action, civil disobedience, sabotage, and armed resistance rests on the distinction between what is legal and what is ethical, between the Law and the Right. There are textbook cases where legal codes violate codes of ethics and justice: Nazi Germany, U.S. slavery, and South African apartheid. In such situations, not only is it legitimate to break the law, it is obligatory. In the words of Dr. King, "I became convinced that non-cooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as is cooperation with good."

The true forces of ethics and justice have involved groups such as the Jewish Resistance, Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, Gandhi and the Indian independence movement, the Suffragettes, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement, and Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress. All of them broke the law, destroyed the enemy's property, or committed violence; they were beaten, jailed, killed, and denounced as extremists or the equivalent of terrorists.

Yet who will argue that their actions were wrong? Today we lionize Nelson Mandela as a great hero, but he and the ANC used violence to win their freedom. People forget that the much-heralded Suffragettes in England and the U.S. used arson and bombs to help win the emancipation of women. No movement for social change has succeeded without a radical fringe, without civil disobedience, property destruction, and even violence — so why should one expect it to be any different with the animal liberation struggle?

Opponents of direct action, civil disobedience, and sabotage (typically those with vested interests in the status quo) believe that illegal actions undermine the rule of law and they view principled lawbreaking and "criminal" actions as a threat to social order. Among other things, this perspective presupposes that the system in question is legitimate or that it cannot be improved upon. It also misrepresents direct activists as people who disrespect the law, when arguably they have a higher regard for the spirit of law and its relation to justice than those who fetishize political order for its own sake. Champions of direct action renounce uncritical allegiance to a legal system. To paraphrase Karl Marx, the law is the opiate of the people, and blind obedience to laws and social decorum led millions of German Jews to their death with almost no resistance. All too often, the legal system is a structure to absorb opposition and induce paralysis by delay.

Despite the incriminations of animal exploitation industries, the state, and the mass media, the ALF is not a terrorist organization; rather they are a counter-terrorist outfit and the newest form of freedom fighters. There are indeed real terrorists in today's world, but they are not the ALF. The most violent and dangerous criminals occupy the top positions of US. corporate and state office; they are the ones most responsible for the exploitation of people, the massacre of animals, and the rape of the planet.

Well have been so busy blogging on other peoples websites (and taking it seriously) that I thought it'd be nice to just have a proper blog session here now and let my hair down.
No copy and paste today....................well maybe a pic or two to cheer it up a bit.

It's been a funny old year. I've been trying to make a go of being a business entrepreneur after my last job screwed me over so bad but it is not really happening yet.
I am stoney broke and just filed for insolvency on all my credit cards (which is nice coz they are blood sucking bastards and deserve it!).
I've been reading an awful lot on't internet about the New World Order, Illuminatti and other such interesting clobber and I can say my eyes are well and truly open now.

I started my journey to Vegandom a long time ago and it has been slow but with a massive big helter skelter slide at the end of it. I really feel now that this society of ours is headed for self destruction. There have been civilizations before which have suffered the same fate so it won't be a first.

The medical system is shot to hell (don't mix business and sickness is my advice there).

We have FAR too many laws now and I just heard today that someone was arrested for dropping an apple core in America and that here in Blighty the Labour party are drawing up plans to make vaccines compulsory!!!!..
Well that's enough to make anyone with more than two real brain cells want out!!

The political system is a JOKE!!

Can't wait for the second coming, it's gotta be soon now. Wonder who's doing the PR for that?

On a good note I just celebrated my daughters 21st and cooked a totally vegan buffet which went down a storm (lots came up again though). Some people liked it so much they decided to wear it..........

and my lesbian neigbours who are moving out, unfortunately, just told me that the people moving in are VEGANS!!!! Yeeeeagh.
What are the chances of that huh? Or are we really spreading the vegan love till it touches everybody? I hope so.

Things are looking up...................And then there is the whole 2012 thing..

As I stood around at the last SHAC demo waiting for the coaches to arrive I overheard some 'newbies' talking to their friends and heard them informing them that HLS does not do 'medical research' but "only tests paints and stuff like that". Not only were their facts wrong but they were perpetuating the myth that animal experiments are vital for medical research.
This needs to be adressed and STRESSED at these demo's. I'm seriously thinking about getting up and doing a speech myself now after that.
If our own outspoken new recruits are spreading (all be it unknowingly) the propoganda that permits this heinous crime to carry on how are we ever going to win?
I know the general public have been brain-washed to the point of dementia but WE know better. It really is time to swot up on the scientific truth's of vivisection.
We are fighting the huge Cancer Research etc lobbies and the pathetic but very loud Pro-test movement who are shouting a lot louder than we are.
The majority of people are against testing products on animals but they draw the line at medical research. Why? Because they have fallen for the emotional blackmail of 'your child or some rats'.
The pro-vivs have free reign in the press and media to blow their horns. We on the otherhand can be arrested for simply handing out literature that proves them wrong.
I personally have been door-to-door leafletting the (scientific) information and now think it's time some of us start SHOUTING about it at rallies too.
We all know the cruelties that go on in HLS and other deathcamps but we need to point out the fraud of it all too. How many people are dying because of drugs developed at HLS for 'medical research'. Pharmaceutical drugs are THE NUMBER ONE KILLER above heart disease and cancer now!!
The search for a cure for cancer has been going on for over 50 years now. How many times a month do you see a piece in the news about a new miracle cure that works on mice only to never hear of it again. People soon forget until the next headline which keeps them pouring their coins into the vivisection coffers.
Don't forget too, at these rallies we have a captive audience (the police). I sometimes watch their faces as the speeches are being read to see their reactions. I have also heard some of them say they are 'on our side'. It would be good to get more of them to be sympathetic to the cause wouldn't it?
Anyway I'm gonna go work on that speech....................

Note from SYITS: (Apparently an Oregon journalist told one of the NAALPO press officers during an interview that this particular anonymous communiqué was one of the best written communiqués he has seen in awhile!) Since no one knows who the author (s) are, except the actual individual or individuals who wrote it, we can only read the narrative and know in our hearts that those who risk their freedom to do such things are truly the great warriors of this movement. And even though these individuals are not known to those of us who choose to picket legally and above ground, we all must understand that they are fighting in their own way to abolish the misery, torture and death being perpetrated upon innocent animals. The animals are surely indebted and grateful to these cells for every direct action done on their behalf and to further the cause of animal liberation.

If you want to get these press releases directly from North American Animal Liberation Press Office, please e-mail them directly at Press@AnimalLiberationPressOffice.org and ask to be placed on their lists.

We, the masked avengers of the Animal Liberation Front released around 40 Blue Iris mink from the breeding stock at Jefferson Fur Farm, 1477 SE Talbot Road, Jefferson, OR. Breeding records containing genetic history were also permanently destroyed. It will be a hard road ahead for these mink and their offspring, but with our help they now have a chance at survival. These animals are not capitalist commodities to be bought and sold for fashion or vanity, but unique individuals deserving of liberation from human exploitation. Even if some of the mink do not make it we feel it is better to die free, then at the hands of their speciesist captors.

To the Posches, owners of Jefferson Fur Farm: Consider this your first warning. Tear down this death camp and let the mink live free. If you don't we will be back to finish the job.

To others concerned with the well-being of fellow living beings. First and foremost, go vegan. If you've been vegan for a while, it's time to start looking up animal abusers in your area and doing the research for how to effectively cripple them. Work in small affinity groups, be cautious always-- macho never, and never give information if captured. It's time for animal rights to move beyond consumer sub-culture, towards an active liberation movement, which threatens the capitalist commoditization of life and the speciesist ideology itself.

We want to make it very clear that we will not be intimidated by the states continued witch hunt against the earth and animal liberation movements. Draconian prison sentences and repressive legislation will not deter us from our goal of total earth, animal, and human liberation. For every liberator you throw in prison, there will two more to take her place. For every activist's house you raid, there will ten times that many cages emptied. You can take our freedom, but you will never extinguish the flame that burns in our heart. Let your passion mirror the animals oppression and our persecution.

The raw awareness that YOU have the power to change the world is more important than any other resource.
Giving your endorsement to political representatives, social programs or radical ideologies will be of little avail if the fundamental problem is that you don't know your own strength.
Every gardeners guide is a direct action handbook, as is every DIY manual. Any action that side-steps regulations, representatives and authorities to accomplish goals directly is Direct Action.
For the civilian born in captivity and raised on spectatorship and submission, direct action changes everything.
Practising direct action means acting directly to meet needs rather than relying on representatives to speak for you.
Today the term commonly refers to illegal protest tactics to pressure governments or corporations to change which at bottom is not much different from voting or campaigning but it really describes actions which cut out the middleman to solve problems.
Voting for a politician to represent you is the opposite of direct action. This is an unreliable way to exercise power to say the least!!
Voting is a lottery! Your candidate may not get elected therefore you have wasted time supporting him or he may get elected and then welsh on his promises.
Conflicts over voting often distract from the real issues, people get caught up in the drama of the campaign. With direct action the issues are raised, addressed specifically and often resolved.
Voting is glorified as a manifestation of our so-called freedom. Its not freedom! Freedom is deciding what the choices are in the first place not choosing between A and B.
Direct action need not be popular to be effective.

Direct action may simply solve an individual problem. For instance:
An advertisement is offensive so it is torn down or 'adjusted'.
Popular or not, direct action can get important issues in the news: sabotaging an environmentally destructive building project can highlight its ecological destruction.

In the 1980's Dutch squatters facing eviction directed a campaign of vandalism and harrassment that lost Amsterdam its bid to host the olympic games thus gaining them a bargaining advantage for their homes.

Direct action can hinder corporate wrongdoing. Animal rights activists have driven many fur corporations out of business using vandalism, obstruction and picketing.
Direct action can also save lives in the case of liberating animals from labs or fur farms.

Direct action is the means for getting in the habit of acting rather than watching.
Partisans of direct action do not give orders or offer leadership:
Direct action is an adjective followed by a noun, not a verb followed by an object!

Many who attempt to educate others about injustice make the mistake of providing them with the information but no ideas of what to do about it. Overwhelmed with facts and bad news most people find it harder to take action, not easier; thus such campaigns often sabotage themselves.
In the long run the most powerful tactics are the ones that inspire and equip others to join the fight.

We should refrain from attacking those who's methods we don't agree with and instead focus on what we can add to make their efforts more effective.
The question is NOT what somebody else SHOULD be doing but what YOU can do!
Some people short-sightedley reject direct action as inneffective or damaging, others compete against each other to see who's tactics are most effective BUT it is important to see all the varied tactics as an eco-system in which all play a role.
As revolutionaries we need to create harmony between our efforts and those of others, even IF some of them waste time fighting over who is 'right'. No tactic can be effective alone; all can be effective together.
(As in the case of the recent foie gras restaurant incidents)

Sometimes direct action means breaking the law!
In fact it is a way of renegotiating the law. When people act according to their conscience instead of to convention, reality can be remade.
Ultimately, when it comes to direct action the laws are immaterial: If what you are doing is subversive, the authorities will attempt to stop you wether it is legal or not-if they can.

One day, when the conflict between people and power reaches its climax everything we do will be illegal.(We are practically there now). Courage and co-operation must win out over tyranny and fear and the law will be broken once and for all. Until that time every instance of direct action is a microcosm of that moment and a seed from which it might grow.

Recipe for direct action:
A circle of friends
Trust
Concensus
Secrecy
A Good Idea
Plans for different scenarios
Structures for responding to unexpected scenarios
A little courage (optional)
ACTION!!

Protests force foie gras off restaurant menu

..NO VIEW-->

One of Britain's leading restaurants has been forced to remove foie gras from the menu after it was subjected to protests and vandalism by animal activists.

Midsummer House in Cambridge - one of only a handful of restaurants in Britain to have two Michelin stars - has for months been the target of anonymous letters and peaceful protests demanding that the French delicacy be banned from the kitchen.

But at the weekend demonstrators vandalised the riverside restaurant, causing damage estimated at £3,000.

After responsibility for the attacks was claimed by the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), the restaurant's owner Daniel Clifford, who is also the head chef, reluctantly bowed to the pressure to protect the safety of his staff and customers.

Foie gras, which is French for fat liver, is an increasingly contentious issue for animal rights campaigners. The smooth, plump feel of the livers is traditionally obtained by force-feeding ducks and geese through tubes inserted into their throats, a process detractors say is painful and distressing for the birds.

Producing foie gras in Britain is banned and most supermarkets have stopped selling it. But the food is renowned as a gastronomic wonder of the world, and Mr Clifford said customers should be free to make their own ethical choices.

He said: "The funny thing is, while they were protesting outside, foie gras sales went up in the restaurant. I think people objected to being told what they could and couldn't eat. My initial reaction was what's next? Lamb? Veal?"

The campaign began with two anonymous letters, he said, followed by regular demonstrations by a group outside the restaurant equipped with loudspeakers and drums.

But two weeks ago a waiter narrowly avoided being hit by a brick thrown through the window and on Sunday morning staff arrived to find the restaurant vandalised.

"They covered almost every window with spray paint, glued the door locks and attacked the window frames with paint stripper," Mr Clifford said.

The ALF admitted carrying out the attack in an email to a local newspaper, and pledged to continue the violence until foie gras was removed from the menu.

"My initial feeling was, 'Sod 'em, we'll get cameras and security to guard the restaurant,'?" said Mr Clifford. "But when the police told me what the ALF was capable of I decided to give in. Ultimately, I have to think of the safety of my staff and customers."

I know I have! It happened about 4 years ago, maybe longer but it sort of crept up on me.
I'm so glad it did.
I havn't done a blog for a while and feel this is a great one for the new year!
Enjoy.............

A time comes in your life when you finally get it...
when, in the midst of all your fears and insanity,
you stop dead in your tracks and somewhere the voice
inside your head cries out...ENOUGH!
Enough fighting and crying and blaming and struggling
to hold on.

Then, like a child quieting down after a tantrum, you
blink back your tears and begin to look at the world
through new eyes.

This is your awakening.

You realize it's time to stop hoping and waiting for
something to change, or for happiness, safety and
security to magically appear over the next horizon.

You realize that in the real world there aren't always
fairy tale endings, and that any guarantee of "happily
ever after" must begin with you... and in the process a sense of
serenity is born of acceptance.

You awaken to the fact that you are not perfect and
that not everyone will always love, appreciate or
approve of who or what you are... and that's OK.
They are entitled to their own views and opinions.

You learn the importance of loving and championing
yourself... and in the process a sense of new found
confidence is born of self-approval.

You stop complaining and blaming other people for the
things they did to you - or didn't do for you - and
you learn that the only thing you can really count
on is the unexpected.

You learn that people don't always say what they mean
or mean what they say and that not everyone will
always be there for you and that everything isn't
always about you.

So, you learn to stand on your own and to take care of
yourself... and in the process a sense of safety and
security is born of self-reliance.

You stop judging and pointing fingers and you begin to
accept people as they are and to overlook their
shortcomings and human frailties... and in the process
a sense of peace and contentment is born of forgiveness.

You learn to open up to new worlds and different points
of view. You begin reassessing and redefining who you
are and what you really stand for.

You learn the difference between wanting and needing
and you begin to discard the doctrines and values
you've outgrown, or should never have bought into to
begin with.

You learn that there is power and glory in creating
and contributing and you stop maneuvering through life
merely as a "consumer" looking for your next fix.

You learn that principles such as honesty and
integrity are not the outdated ideals of a bygone era,
but the mortar that holds together the foundation upon
which you must build a life.

You learn that you don't know everything, it's not
your job to save the world and that you can't teach
a pig to sing. You learn that the only cross to bear
is the one you choose to carry and that martyrs get
burned at the stake.

Then you learn about love. You learn to look at
relationships as they really are and not as you would
have them be. You learn that alone does not mean lonely.

You stop trying to control people, situations and
outcomes. You learn to distinguish between guilt and
responsibility and the importance of setting boundaries
and learning to say NO.

You also stop working so hard at putting your feelings
aside, smoothing things over and ignoring your needs.

You learn that your body really is your temple. You
begin to care for it and treat it with respect. You
begin to eat a balanced diet, drink more water, and
take more time to exercise.

You learn that being tired fuels doubt, fear, and
uncertainty and so you take more time to rest. And,
just as food fuels the body, laughter fuels our soul.
So you take more time to laugh and to play.

You learn that, for the most part, you get in life
what you believe you deserve, and that much of life
truly is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

You learn that anything worth achieving is worth
working for and that wishing for something to happen
is different than working toward making it happen.

More importantly, you learn that in order to achieve
success you need direction, discipline and perseverance.
You also learn that no one can do it all alone, and
that it's OK to risk asking for help.

You learn the only thing you must truly fear is fear
itself. You learn to step right into and through your
fears because you know that whatever happens you can
handle it and to give in to fear is to give away the
right to live life on your own terms.

You learn to fight for your life and not to squander
it living under a cloud of impending doom.

You learn that life isn't always fair, you don't
always get what you think you deserve and that
sometimes bad things happen to unsuspecting, good
people... and you learn not to always take it
personally.

You learn that nobody's punishing you and everything
isn't always somebody's fault. It's just life
happening. You learn to admit when you are wrong and to build bridges
instead of
walls.

You learn that negative feelings such as anger, envy
and resentment must be understood and redirected or
they will suffocate the life out of you and poison
the universe that surrounds you.

You learn to be thankful and to take comfort in many
of the simple things we take for granted, things
that millions of people upon the earth can only
dream about: a full refrigerator, clean running
water, a soft warm bed, a long hot shower.

Then, you begin to take responsibility for yourself
by yourself and you make yourself a promise to never
betray yourself and to never, ever settle for less
than your heart's desire.

You make it a point to keep smiling, to keep trusting,
and to stay open to every wonderful possibility.

You hang a wind chime outside your window so you can
listen to the wind.

Finally, with courage in your heart, you take a stand,
you take a deep breath, and you begin to design the life you
want to live as best you can.
