Straightening Ali

Novel by Amjeed Kabil

This book had me gripped from the start, giving me an alternative view to forced marriages and its affects on young Asian males in Britain today. It tells the story of a young Pakistani man, Ali who because of his deep love for his family, unwillingly agrees to a forced marriage. The only problem is that he's gay and his family knows he's gay, hence the title Straightening Ali.  The novel has all the ingredients of pain, love, tension and just the right touch of humour, which as a result, makes for compulsive reading. Warning! Not to be read while a roast is in the oven unless you like your food burnt. The book is beautifully written and easy to read, giving you a glossary of Asian words that will allow you to fully appreciate the story and also enable you to take a peek inside the culture of Ali Mirza. I recommend this novel to all Youth Workers and those committed to supporting young people. Can't wait to see the movie!
