Admin Note
READ THE RULES. These can be found in the Forum section under ADMIN NOTES and SITE RULES. Read them and comply with them.
Do NOT share accounts. Do NOT swap accounts. Do NOT give your account away to anyone, no matter what they say. Do NOT give your password out to anyone.
If someone is asking to swap accounts, please report it using the Grievance section, and paste the mail into it for us to look at. Do not fall for any scams of anyone saying they will "borrow" your account for a certain length of time and get you to a higher rank. Please report any instances of this as well.
Anyone suspecting a dupe, please use the grievance section, but be mindful of the fact that we require PROOF to be able to take your grievance forward.
Please note that the game is a BETA version, and therefore still under construction. Things will change over time and alterations may be made without warning. Glitches and bugs are still being found and corrected. If you find any, please report them. DO NOT exploit them.
This entire thread is the work of many players in the game both past and present. Some of the views expressed within the following pages should not be taken as those of the Admins, and some contributions have been left in their original state. Suggestions made by the authors should not be taken as suggestions from myself or any other Admin. This is a rough guide to help those who need it. It is by no means a definitive list of everything you can do on the game, or a complete "How to" of playing Mafia.org.

Mafia Bible Section I
It is important to understand how to navigate across the site. This section gives an overview of where everything can be located.
Once you have logged on you will be on the main page. Read the information on it. It is easy just to dismiss this page and start clicking away. Spend time reading over what the Admin have to say.
Looking at the page before us, running along the top you have: Date & Time/Current City/Cash On Hand/Character Name. This is beside the mafia logo, currently plastered with a big red Beta sign. The middle of the screen displays the information that is available from clicking the various tabs. The bottom of the screen lists users seen online recently (In alphabetical order).
Now, let us look at each tab in turn and explore its functions-
~The News Tab~
Personal News:
This gives you all the information currently concerning your character as the game is played. Information displayed here may include muggings (committed, witnessed or experienced by you); attacks (committed, witnessed or experienced by you) jail sentences served, money transfers received or sent, and gambling bets/wins/losses. A flashing sheet icon at the top of your screen will indicate a news update. Clicking this icon takes you straight to your personal news.
Newspaper:
This is an essential read to keep up to date with street activities. The Mafia Gazette is the main newspaper included in this section, although occasionally others make an appearance. Newspapers are updated frequently. Read each paper and absorb the information. The newspapers may offer advertisement space or request submissions, so see if anything takes your fancy. You can even read the newspaper in jail to pass away the time. It is free and informative.
~The Info Tab~
Site:
Gives site statistics such as number of users, number of deaths etc. You can also see who has started a new account recently.
Search:
If you want to look for one person in particular, type their name in here and click submit. You can then view their profile.
Profile:
This displays your characters profile. This is how it will look to other people. (Exceptions: They cannot see your sponsor, health, wealth and in some cases your rank). Your profile tab will show you the following-
Start Date - When you started the game.
Last Active – When you last logged in.
Health – Your status of health
Lives In – The city you reside in.
Sponsor – Who invited you in, your boss.
Rank – What rank you are.
Wealth – How poor/rich you are (concerning cash on hand).
Posts/Threads – No. of times posted / No. of threads (new post topics) created.
Mails – No. of mails sent to other users.
Edit Profile:
Here you can customise your character profile. It contains some information as in profile above-
Health – Your status of health.
Hometown – The city you are from originally (the one you chose when you created the account).
Lives In – The city you reside in (it will be the same as your boss).
Shank – Lists if you have a shank or not.
Gun – Lists if you have a gun or not.
Bribe – Set the amount you are willing to bribe police to get away. (They don't always accept them).
Resist Arrest – Choose to give up peacefully or try and escape when caught. I advise putting resist arrest off as you can be hurt or killed trying to flee. A real gangster doesn't run anyway.
Mail Type – Old or new. See what format you prefer, they are set up slightly differently. New is good for busier mailboxes.
Mobcode – Chooses if you want to uses icons in some chat areas by using keyboard commands. (Currently withdrawn).
Colour Scheme – The default scheme consists of shades of grey, experiment and see what you prefer.
Notepad:
Jot down any information that you feel is important and want to remember for later reference. You can update and delete notes as necessary.
Polls:
You can vote on polls set by the Admins. These are designed to help create a better game. Honest input will be appreciated and results then considered.
Mail Tools:
In here you can stop your mail icon from blinking till you get new mail, or you can purge your saved mail.
~The Forums Tab~
This is where most character interaction takes place (apart from mailing privately). Each section of the forum has a different purpose and you will be expected to act in the according manner.
Watched:
This will list any threads that you have decided to watch i.e. ones that you are interested in. To watch a thread click, 'watch' at the top or bottom of it. You can 'drop' the thread later when it is on no further interest.
Street (RP):
The streets of our world. Any communication here must be relevant to 1930's mafia life. Here you must act IN CHARACTER. Play a role. Be imaginative and contribute to society. Remember where you are, it isn't present day. Do not SPAM. Spamming is useless drivel that helps no one. Street threads are concurrent from city to city.
Bar (RP):
Visit the many bars/restaurants or start your own. Again, act in character. These change from city to city.
General (OOC):
Out of character chatting for game related issues. If you wish to talk about non-game related issues then use the off-site forums on the main login page. Remember, even though there are no role-playing constraints here, spamming is still not tolerated.
Private:
Threads in this forum cost $100k to create. They are secret and the owner of the post can give people a link to the thread if he wants them to read/contribute.
Admin Forum:
Post here if you find something wrong with the game. Post here about problems or game issues only. Report any bugs. DO NOT post here to bitch about the game or to ask dumb questions. The Admin staff are very busy.
Crew Forum:
This is a forum that can only be seen by members in your crew. Private information and details concerning the crew can be listed here, away from the public eye. Your boss is able to delete any old threads or ones that he feels aren't relevant.
Admin Notes:
Read here to see what the Admin have to say. If you feel there is a game related problem check here first before posting in the Admin Forum as it may already be being addressed.
~The Mail Tab~
This section is for privately mailing other people. (Mobmails). When you have a new mail you will see a flashing envelope icon.
Read:
This displays all of your read mail, along with new mail coming in. You can save, reply etc in this section.
Compose:
Enter the name of the person you want to write a mail to, enter the text in the main body and send away. A quick way to compose a mail to someone is to click their name at the top of their profile. This will start the mail off ready for you to enter text.
Saved:
Saved mail can be looked at again here.
Sent:
A list of mail recently sent by you.
Chit-Chat:
A refreshable chat page. You can chat to any other users who are also in the chit-chat section. Out of character chatting.
~The Crime Tab~
The centre of your illegal money making opportunities.
Traffic:
Buy and sell drugs here. Obviously you want to buy low and sell high. You will soon learn an average price for each from regular game-play. Drug prices fluctuate from city to city and change due to buying and selling. The prices will change everywhere throughout the day depending on the user activity. Drug prices are they same for everyone, so communicate with friends. Don't expect strangers to help you out, why should they? Everyone has his or her own profits to worry about. You can carry up to 20 units of drugs. Trafficking is risky. You can lose drugs due to mugging or you can lose it all getting caught in a bust. Never fly with drugs, you will be caught. Trains are safer but you can still be caught upon entering a city.
Petty Crimes:
These crimes can be committed by any rank. Try your hand at snatching a purse, holding up a liquor store or jacking a car. You can fail or succeed. You will make cash by succeeding. Regardless of failing or succeeding, the police WILL catch up with you sooner or later. Be prepared to do the time for the crime. Doing the same crime over and over will see jail sentences increase, so vary things a bit. If you click on crimes too quickly you will be logged out. This is a measure to calm you down. To avoid scripters you have to enter a verification code before committing crimes. This proves that you are human and not cheating the game.
Felonies:
You can commit felonies once you rank to hoodlum. Try your hand at hitting a bookies, robbing a train car or attempting a jewellery heist. Felonies will bring in more cash than petty crimes, but can't be pulled off with the same frequency. Jail time will be longer for felony crimes too.
Mug:
If you want to mug someone, type his or her name in and submit. They have to be in the same city as you and active. Mugging is risky business. How would you like to be mugged? It can result in you being mugged yourself or even killed. If you succeed, you can score some quick cash or steal some drug units. Fail and you could be on the end of some revenge. Attempting a mugging could also result in 'whack back', where the target automatically fires at you. Mugging attempts will be listed in your news. Sometimes you will see who mugs you, whereas sometimes the assailant is very sneaky and you don't recognise them. Beware; even if a target doesn't 'see' the mugger, other local people will be sure to have seen something.
Whack:
This option is only available if you have a gun. A gun will be offered to you in the streets by a shady character. Prices could range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. The gun offer appears almost out of nowhere and can be accepted or declined. To be able to buy the gun you must have the cash on hand. You can't nip off to the bank. Sometimes the gun seller will run off even if you accept, sometimes it is even some joker trying to flog you a toy gun. Please note: other players cannot sell you a gun.
Back to the whacking option, once again type in your victims name and click. Whacking has many of the same dangers as mugging, but expect extreme opposition from your target. Do not take whacking lightly: you are attempting to kill someone and end his or her participation in the game. You have the option to leave your victim a whispered message for them to hear as they die. You can also search their pockets for money. Shooting, as in real life, will not always result in a kill. You could miss or inflict a range of injuries. You can only shoot active players, with a minutes wait between each shot.
~The Jail Tab~
Visit:
If you are out of jail then you can see who is currently doing time, their security level, sentence and time remaining. You can attempt to jail break any individual by clicking on 'attempt jailbreak'. Jail breaking is risky. It can get you killed by armed tower guards. If you are caught then you could face a lengthy sentence. Jail breaking is an excellent way of ranking up, however. Players may be grateful for being busted out and many offer cash rewards. An individual's security level dictates how hard they will be to bust out.
If you are in jail serving time you will see the following tabs:
Cell:
Your dark, damp home for the length of your sentence. Not much to do here except to check how long you have left on your sentence.
Yard:
This is similar to chit-chat, except that it is used by inmates only. Anyone in any jail in any city can talk here.
Forum:
Jail forums are a good place to post and fritter away those long sentences. Its great if you can talk in character with your posts, but due to the boredom within jail many out of character topics arise. Just remember not to spam.
Shank:
This option is only available if you have a shank. A shank offer comes along much the same way as a gun offer, except the opportunity arises in jail. Almost out of nowhere, you may get an offer. Again, you can accept or decline. Your character may get caught trying to conceal a shank, or he may dismiss the offer altogether.
Assuming you have your shank, you can type in your victims name and attack them. They must be in the same jail as you. (Inmates names are at the bottom of the page. White names are in the same jail as you). As with shooting, you can miss, inflict a wound or kill your victim outright. Shanking should also be considered carefully, it is attempted murder. Should your victim survive, he may seek revenge. Targets can also shank back in self-defence. If you are caught, successful or otherwise, the judge can extend your jail time significantly. You can whisper to your target as you kill them and you can also take their cash on hand if successful. Shanks can easily be confiscated.
Gamble:
A dice game is available to try and make some cash on the inside. For every six you roll you double your stake. Odds are against you winning so gamble sensibly.
Blackjack:
Play cards for money while in jail. Pretty simple really.
There is another added danger in jail, an inmate known only as Bubba. He may catch you and shaft you mercilessly, decreasing your health significantly. A vigorous ass raping could result in near death. Be prepared, it happens to almost everyone at some point. To reduce the risk of Bubba bumming you, don't aimlessly click links in jail if it is not necessary.
~The Trade Tab~
Trade:
Trade Guns or Bullets with other players. You must be in the same city as the other player to do this. You can have as many guns as you like, but you will only ever use one gun.
Transfer:
If you want to give someone some money, you can use this option. Transferring cash can only be done if both players are in the same city.
~The Gamble Tab~
Gambling isn't legal in every city. Check the site map to see if you city allows gambling. If it does the following options are available:
Next Race:
Bet here on horse racing. Races take place every 30mins. Choose to bet on a winner or bet trifecta (1st 2nd and 3rd). There is a $10k maximum total bet in each race. Horse racing is an easy way to make or lose cash. Look at things such as the track state and temperature as well as horses form before placing bets. The odds indicate who is a favourite and who is a rank outsider.
Stable:
Lists all of the horses. Clicking on a horse name brings up its stats. Horses with black names are owned by other players. Horses with white names are not owned or are up for sale and can be bought. Generally a horse costs $500 per day upkeep.
Stable (Private):
If you own any horses, they will be kept here. You can view their extended race statistics. If you wish, you can set a sale price for any of your horses. Any horse that you list for sale can be bought by another player at the price that you have set. It is thought that the maximum number of horses that you can own is sixteen, although this is unconfirmed for all ranks. You can view your private stable in non-gambling cities too.
Previous Races:
This lists 1st 2nd and 3rd placed horses in the most recent races.
Slots:
This is another gambling feature. You can stake various amounts of money on the slot machines. They work like conventional one-armed bandits. Fortunes can be won and lost here.
Blackjack:
Also known as 21 or pontoon. You can bet big here. It can be easy to become addicted. Millions can be lost and won.
Slots For Sale:
Shows if any of the slots you play on can be bought and owned. They can bring in the owner huge amounts of cash so don't expect to see any for sale, at least at a reasonable price.
~The Bank Tab~
Remember, your account will not be activated until you have been alive for 48hrs.
Statement:
Shows the cash that you have on hand and in the bank.
Withdraw:
If you need more cash on hand, withdraw the amount needed under this tab.
Deposit:
Transfer cash that you have on hand into the bank under this tab.
Wire:
You can send money by wire transfer if you are in a different city as the recipient.
There is a 10% fee charged for using this service. Please note that new accounts can't accept wire transfers straight away. This is to combat people making dupe accounts and exploiting the money system.
~The City Tab~
Lets you know what city you are in.
Locals:
Lists all of the players in your city. This is a good way to see who is around you. Active and inactive players are listed.
Local Bank:
This has a deposit/withdraw function only. Use it as a back up to the national bank. It may be safer, but your money does not travel with you in local banks.
Train Station:
The option to travel to another city by train. Train travel is fairly inexpensive and can be done every hour.
Airport:
The option to reach another city by plane. This method of travel is more expensive but you can reach cities that are inaccessible by train.
Map:
A map of The United States. This map shows all of the major cities as well as train routes, air routes and gambling zones.
Hospital:
You can check in here if you are injured. Hospital treatment will speed up the healing process and will cost $1000 per hour. While checked into hospital, you can do anything within the game except leave the city. You can travel again when your treatment is finished.
Bodyguards:
Available bodyguards are listed here. They change from city to city and vary in price. Don't be surprised to find few or none available as they are in high demand. If you do buy any, you can also view their status here. Daily fees.
~The Church Tab~
Religion is important to a Mafioso. There are a number of options under the church tab.
Obituaries:
A list of players who have died recently. Their name, rank and time of death ids listed. You can visit the funerals of your choice and pay your respects if you wish. Please remember that funerals should be attended with respect. The dearly departed may have uttered some final words, see what they had to say before they died.
Donate:
Show your appreciation to the church by donating what you can afford. It will be appreciated….
Pray:
Pray to The Lord in private here.
Confess:
An anonymous post. You can say anything here and no one will know whom it was from. You can see everyone's confessions but not the confessor. Remember to stay respectful; you are in the house of God.
~The Crew Tab~
Crew Forum:
This is a forum that can only be seen by members in your crew. Private information and details concerning the crew can be listed here, away from the public eye. Your boss is able to delete any old threads or ones that he feels aren't relevant.
Crew Notepad:
This is similar to your own personal notepad, except that your boss writes in it. All members of the crew can read from this, but cannot write in it. It is like a crew notice board.
~Support Mafia.org Tab~
Mafia.org is a free to play game and any donations will be gladly accepted.
Go here to donate money to the site and find out more about merchandise.
~The Logout Tab~
Fairly self-explanatory! Be aware that when you log out, you are still considered active for a short time (around 15mins). In this time you can still be shot, mugged etc like any other player.

Mafia Bible Section II: RANKS
This is the known list of ranks within the game up to Made Man. If you get that far you will be well aware of ranks to follow:
Without a crew: Citizen – Thug – Hoodlum – StreetBoss – Made Man
Within a crew: Gangster – Goomba – Earner – Wiseguy – MadeMan
After Made Man: Capo – Boss – Consigliere – Don – Godfather
Each rank is attainable by committing crimes and generally playing the game. This excludes StreetBoss and MadeMan.
StreetBoss:
If you are a hoodlum and not in a crew, you may get a bar offer. (Like a gun offer etc). It gives you the opportunity to buy an old bar to use as an HQ and start a petty gang. You must have the cash on hand to take advantage of this offer. Bars can cost tens or hundreds of thousands. You must have done lots of crimes etc to be worthy of a bar offer. A StreetBoss can invite members into his crew. If you are lucky enough to make StreetBoss, you will be given a gun with your HQ. You will also have the opportunity to send a single mail to each member of your crew from inside jail every time that you are convicted.
MadeMan:
You can make MadeMan in two ways. If your boss was made and ranks on, you can be promoted. The other way is for The Godfather to give you this distinguished title. To qualify, you must have met many different criteria. You will get another bar offer and this could also cost millions. New crimes are available to a MadeMan, such as a bank job and kidnap. Millions of dollars could be scored from bank robberies, leaving many players penniless as their accounts are emptied. This is a very rare occurrence. Kidnapping is a feature that can restrict a person's movement and can be used to kill.

Mafia Bible Section III: HINTS AND TIPS
~Witness Statements~
From time to time you will see people being attacked and mugged etc. This will be in your news section. What do you do about witnessing these incidents? Most people advise that you stay quiet and respect the code of Omerta. A Mafioso is not a snitch. If you know who is being attacked, you may want to tell them in case they didn't see the attacker. You may see people offering rewards for witness statements of their friends' death. You have to decide if you are willing to give out the information or stay quiet. Repercussions may follow the actions you take.
~Offers~
Throughout the game there are a number of offers that may arise. These include gun, shank, bar and clearing your rap sheet. As you commit more crimes, the bigger your rap sheet gets and the more known you become to police. A large rap sheet will result in lengthier sentences. You can clear your rap sheet if you receive an offer and have the cash on hand. Successfully doing this will set your rank back as citizen. You will be safe from attack as a citizen. Clearing your raps sheet can be expensive and can cost from tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
~Health~
Your health can be rated as follows:
Perfect
Magnificent
Excellent
Very Good
Good
Average
Below Average
Questionable
Pitiful
Disturbing
Dead
You may notice that your name is dark green. This colour changes as your health changes. Starting off from Perfect to dead – Green, Light Green, Lime, Yellow, Orange, Red, Black. There may be more shades but this is a general indication.
~Injuries~
The injuries inflicted by or on you are as follows:
No Injury
Superficial Wound
Significant Wound
Major Wound
Severe Wound
Near Fatal Wound
Fatal Wound
There is a varying degrees of health loss are associated with each wound inflicted/sustained. A superficial wound will only affect your health slightly, whereas a near fatal wound will leave your character almost dead.
~Dice Rolling Tip~
This is a tip for the dice game in jail. The odds are against you here, as you need sixes to win. Needless to say, there are 5 other numbers on each of the two dice that are going to screw you. The following way of betting on the dice is known as the pyramid method or 'doubling up';
Say you start off betting $10. Bet and double your stake each time until you win. When you win, you will be up $10 (or the amount that you staked at the start). Example: $10 Lose, $20 Lose, $40 Lose, $80 Win. You have lost a total of $70 but won $80. You are up $10 (the start amount). Repeat process.
Just be wary of how the cash doubles up. With a $10 stake you will be down $11840 in just 10 losing rolls. It is easy to lose all your cash on hand.
~Offers~
The different offers throughout the game have been listed already. It is useful to remember that these appear to be random, but actually coincide with the way you play the game. You must have the cash on hand to take up the offer. If you are short you can't withdraw cash.
~Respect and Omerta~
These are essential aspects of the game. Many people do not know the true meaning of respect and Omerta. Read through the forums carefully for tips. These are invaluable sources of information.
~Communication~
Communication is what this game is all about. Learn how to converse properly and what is expected of you in different areas of the game.

Mafia Bible Section IV: OTHER FEATURES
Guns:
Guns can be purchased in two ways. First is random, while you walk the streets. A stranger figure will approach you and make you an offer. But buyers beware, they are criminals, and they will try to sell you fakes, and are even known to shoot prospective customers. The second way you can obtain a gun is by buying from another character. Please use your gun responsibly, or the police may have to confiscate it. Your gun should only be used in self defence. It is not uncommon either to have one of the Godfathers men come over and help you remember responsible use of your gun.
Bullets:
Can be purchased in the same way as guns and are offered in the same way.
Shanks:
Shanks can only be obtained one way. You will happen to randomly receive the chance to take a shank, while in jail. Shanks can only be used in jail, they can be used repeatedly, however if caught the guards will take them and you can have more time added to your already cumbersome sentence. So as with guns, use your shank responsibly.
Bodyguards:
Bodyguards are just that. They go everywhere with you, however expect to pay a little more at the train station or airport, as you will foot the bill for each Bodyguard you own. Bodyguards are not cheap either, so make sure you can afford them BEFORE you hire one, otherwise they will quit once you cannot pay them. Bodyguards are not invincible either; they can die, so do not expect them to get shot and not be affected. Also Bodyguards will not stop every single bullet from hitting you. They are not a Kevlar vest so be forewarned. Bodyguards also will shoot back in your defence. But remember they miss just as we do, so do not get mad at them. Bodyguards not only try to stop shooters they also try to stop muggers, and have been known to kill occasionally.
Favourites:
Found someone you get along with? Well add them to your favourites list. Just simply click on their username, scroll down and there you can add them to your favourites. Want to see who is in your friend list, and who has you as a friend click on the INFO tab and than FAVOURITES. If you terminate your friendship you can remove a favourite, simply by going to your favourites list and removing the person.
Ignore:
Someone harassing you, or annoying you? Than ignore them and they cannot send you mail anymore! To ignore someone click on their username, and scroll down and there you have the option to ignore the person. Have a lot of enemies and cannot remember whom you ignored? Than simply click on the INFO tab, and than FAVOURITES and at the bottom there is a list of whom you are ignoring. Think you can work out your problems and want to un-ignore them, well than just go to your ignore list and click the un-ignore button.
Private Threads:
Private threads cost $100,000 per thread and can only be viewed by those you want. You can invite people into your private thread by sending them the link, found in your browser URL. From there you can WATCH the thread and not have to worry about copying and pasting the link every time you wish to view the thread.
Mail Tools:
These are pretty self explanatory, to get to them click the MAIL tab and than MAIL TOOLS from here you can stop the blinking icon and delete all saved mails.

Basic Role Playing Rules
Rule One- Write in character. I cannot stress how important it is. Make up someone you want to be. A tough mobster? Perhaps a snob of royal blood? Heck, you can be a drunken hobo with one leg, as long as it is in character, we are fine with it. Have a ball. This is your time to be creative.
Example: Princess Amelia sat in her Carriage as it rolled down the street pass the people who actually had to work for their money. As the Carriage came to a stop, her footman stepped down and rolled out the red Diamond encrusted carpet for her. Stepping gingerly out of the carriage Princess Amelia smiles and straightened her glittering tiara that was worth more than the money in Sureal's crew bank.
Do you see!? All in character, sure it may never happen, but it is in character.
Rule Two- Pick a tense. Personally I feel if you are doing an ICS on the street, it should be past tense. If you are writing a speech or addressing a crowd with a question, it should be Present tense. (For those of you who's first language isn't English and want help with this, ask a friend or well respected player for advice.)
Example of Present tense- "I go to walk outside my house and suddenly my cat runs into the room and knocks the lamp off the side table. I dive to catch it, but no such luck. It falls to the floor and shatter into a thousand tiny shards of glass. I try to roll away to avoid getting hurt, but I end up hitting the door instead. I curse out and sit up to rub my bruised elbow and look around the room in shamble. All of the sudden I tilt my head back and start to laugh."
That's a present Tense ICS. Now the same paragraph, but in past tense.
Example Past Tense- "I tried to walk outside my house when suddenly my cat ran into the room and knocked the lamp off the side table. I dove to catch it, but no such luck. It fell to the floor and shattered into a thousand tiny shards of glass. I tried to roll away to avoid getting hurt, but I ended up hitting the door instead. I cursed out while I sat up and rubbed my bruised elbow and look around the room in shambles. All of the sudden I tilted my head back and started to laugh."
Lesson Two: In Character and Out of Character.
The basics of In Character have already been laid out. This will be more in depth. To roleplay in character, you must, as has been said, pick a character and stick to it. Tough guy, polite passer-by in a conversation, bar owner or whatever you want to be, get into the role and play it. It's all down to you acting like the character you have created. Pick a persona and stick with it.
Out of character can be used in the Admin and General forums. The crew forums (when there are any) will be governed by whatever the boss wants in there. The street and bars are pure roleplay areas and should not contain any Out Of Character (OOC) references, asides, personal comment etc. Think up in character ways of saying what you are trying to say. Always remember, this is set in the thirties, with prohibition, no computers and it is not a game when talking in character.
Words to avoid when talking in-character:
Computer, thread, forum, any mention of post 1930's technology or other items that are out of the timeline. Think instead how you can word it. For example, "the game" can be referred to as "the community"; a "thread" is a "conversation" and so on. Choose your words wisely and keep it all in character.
Once again, remember that it is the nineteen thirties, and avoid slang from later decades when talking. Back then, people did not "spk like dis", or call each other "gangsta" or use phrases like "What's up, my homie" and so on. Also, it was a time of more sexual innocence, so openly talking of sex on the streets, outside the confines of a brothel, or jokingly in a bar, was not considered polite. Any females talking openly of sex obviously would have loose morals, so that should be avoided.
Once you manage to decide what character you are going to be, you can build on that with a personal history. Make one up, but keep it plausible for the era. After that the rest is up to you. Go out, have fun, and keep discussions in the right place, with the right style and content.

FAQ Basics
Q: How Do I stay Alive?
A: Don't upset people!! Act with respect and turn off your resist arrest option in your profile!
Q: How do I kill people?
A: Firstly, stop being so hot-headed!! Remember this is a role play game. This means you act as Mafioso's would act, you can't go round shooting every Tom, Dick and Harry. The practical answer is that you buy a gun which is offered at random times depending on a number of factors such as which city you are in and what answers you gave at your characters registration.
Q: How Can I Get a Gun?
A: See above. Cities such as Chicago, New York and LA seem to places in which guns are offered more readily. There is no set price for guns, but they tend to range from 1k-4k and you need to have the money on hand.
Q: Can I Mug People?
A: There is split opinion on this topic. Some consider it a heinous act which must result in death; others see it as a button which is there to be pressed. What I would say is consider the nature of the game - role play! If you mug someone who has no family and/or respect then in RL you would not expect any comebacks. Mug someone of distinction and expect to pay the consequences. Distinguishing who is who however can be difficult if not impossible!
Q: How Do I Rank?
A: Work your plums off!! Petty, Jailbreak etc etc etc. The more you do, the quicker you will rank
Q: How Do I Get into a Crew?
A: Look around for those advertising vacancies and then mail these people with an intelligent and reasonable request. Things that leaders like to hear are your family history, what you can offer, why you want to be in their crew etc etc. Do not send crap such as 'can i b in ur cru plz' - you will either be ignored, shot or worst of all be stuck in a crew full of bums!
Q: Shank?
A: what you call me!?? Only kidding, a shank is a weapon you can use in jail - i.e. a screw driver, knife, ice pick etc. You will be offered these at random intervals whilst in jail. It depends on the answers you provided on registration of your character
Q: Where can I find tips for the Horses?
A: You can't!! You have to study form and...well... Gamble!
Q: What is this IRC that they speak of?
A: This is an internet relay chat programme, basically it is a program for chat rooms. Communication in mafia.org is key and many crews will have their own chat room. May I suggest that you download a trial version FREE from http://www.mirc.com/get.html and then follow these instructions once it is installed;
Tools>options>servers>add>
Description; mafia
IRC Server; irc.jaundies.com or efnet server (go to http://www.efnet.org/?module=servers to find a suitable one)
Ports; 6667
Group; Mafia
Then in you text box type /list and pick a channel to join from the list. Once there the people you find can help you out. Some people have a tag line containing a channel which will look something like nameofourchannel. To join these channels type /join nameofthechannel in your text box.
Q: What is Omerta?
A: In strict definition it derives from the Italian for humility/honour and is generally referred to as a code of silence. However, it is infact much more than this:
The code of omerta, if put into words might say: "Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without police protection is both. It is cowardly to betray an offender to justice, even though his offences be against yourself, as it is not to avenge an injury by violence. It is dastardly and contemptible in a wounded man to betray the name of his assailant, because if he recovers, he must naturally expect to take vengeance himself. A wounded man shall say to his assailant: If I live, I will kill you - If I die you are forgiven."
From THE RISE AND FALL OF THE CLEVELAND MAFIA - Rick Porrello (1995)
Many talk of the four aspects of the Omerta Code, these can be summed up as;
(i) A code of silence - Never to "rat out" any mafia member. Never to divulge any mafia secrets. Even if they were threatened by torture or death.
(ii) Complete obedience to the boss - Obey the boss's orders, no matter what.
(iii) Assistance - To provide any necessary assistance to any other respected or befriended mafia faction.
(iv) Vengeance - Any attacks on family members must be avenged. "An attack on one is an attack on all."
Q; What type of remarks are to be left at a funeral?
A; A funeral is not a place to be leaving your final insults to your mortal enemies. We live in a world of respect and honour where Omerta covers everything. Too many people leave tag lines at funerals such as 'Fuk u, u shit' or 'hahahahahaha - told u not to mug'. These are not acceptable!! If you cannot leave an RIP message then leave nothing at all. Remember, we have honour amongst thieves, we are not savages and nor shall we behave like savages!
Q; What are underground groups?
A; In the most objective definition possible, these are groups which tend to have no official structure and their aims often clash, partially or entirely, with the rest of the community. Whereas your official crews (if i said 'overground' then I would burst into the theme tune of the Wombles) are headed by a leader who has bought a bar/HQ and their structure is (usually) set out with RHM (Right hand man)/LHM (left hand man) bosses etc, underground groups have no such structure. You may find that they will have a named leader but by their very nature, underground groups do not own bars/HQs, they are a group of people who get together and try to enforce their specific aims. An unofficial structure may exist, but it is likely to change often with either one, or a very small group (3-5) of people heading the entire outfit. Underground groups are usually short lived.
Q; What's the deal with this hiding behind a citizenship thing I don't quite get it, and does getting the clean rap sheet have something to do with this?
A; A citizen cannot be killed, they are a protected rank (similar to thugs in the last version if you remember them). The thinking behind this is that it gives new players a chance to get used to the game before they become a target for others. When you clear your rap sheet, you once again become a citizen. If a citizen commits no crime then he remains a citizen. Some choose to do this so they make a living as a life insurance broker, others just wish to comment on society. When people 'hide behind the rank' it means that they are doing something they would not otherwise do if they were at risk of dying (ie if they were another rank), a prime example would be a citizen who relentlessly berates one crew, knowing that if he done so as a hoodlum he would be shot!
Q; When clearing your rap sheet, do you lose your previous performance points, so that your character is essentially a new character or do you keep the points but you are nominally demoted?
A; As far as I can gather, some points are kept. If you were to acheive the rank of made man for example and then clear your rap sheet, you will return to made man much quicker than it originally took. I can only draw upon experience in that I can tell you that I was a street boss in a past life and when my crew cleared their rap sheet, I was able to re-recruit them and promote them to their previous rank almost immediatly. I would highly recommend however that you clear your rap sheet before running a crew of your own as the opportunity does not present itself to a crew leader.
Q: What is 'clear the rap sheet'?
A: Well, you get a fresh start; you go back to the rank of civilian and can start petties again without been put in jail every third attempt. You will regain your previous rank pretty quick once you have cleared your rap sheet. This can cost 90k-350k - again money must be on hand.
Q: How often do drugs get restocked?
A: Drugs are supply and demand. The more that get sold in a city, the more there will be to buy.
Q: How does traffic work?
A: You buy drugs at a low price and sell them when the price increases. The prices are based upon supply and demand.
Q; How does the bet trifecta work?
A; The bet trifecta is an accumulater bet, you pick which horse you think will win, which will finish second (place) and which will finish third (show). Your maximum total bet is 10k so you can put any number of bets on so long as you dont exceed that amount. With odds of 50:1 the bet trifecta is probably the best option in the bookies, a 10k bet will get you a return of half a mill should it come in.
Q: What size should pics be?
A: All Pics should be 150x225 pixels and ideally .jpg format.
Q; When i try to get a shank a message appears which reads; "At the last moment you think better of it and return to work unnoticed." Why does it do that?
A; Your characters attributes often override your choices. For example, when pettying you may see a message saying that you changed your mind etc. These messages are not a glitch, it simply means that your character is not yet ready to do whatever it is you have asked of them.
Q: What about donations to the church? How does that benefit your account and what is the point in giving money back to the game?
A: Giving money to the church is rumoured to help your progression to the next rank, but it's most notable use is the role it is rumoured to play in getting Made. Contributing to the church appears to offer the opportunity to become a Made Man far quicker.
Q; Praying and confessionals, what do they do?
A; Word is that these add to your combat skills, ie shooting, shanking and defence. It seems that the Holy Father will look after those who worship him.

FAQ Advanced
Q: How Do I Get My Own Crew?
A: Work your plums off!! Get to rank of street boss by buying a bar which is offered to you when you have enough points (which you obviously can't see because this is role play). Bars can cost from $60 to upwards of 20k - again you need to have the money on you.
Q; Why do I spend so much time in jail?
A; Well, the cynics amongst us would point to the fact the only advertisements on this site are located in jail, but I shan't comment upon that. Instead I will point you to the clear your rap sheet questions. You have too great a criminal record for the police to now turn a blind eye, your jail sentences become longer and more frequent, you need to clear your rap sheet to avoid extensive jail time! The reason you spend so much time in jail is because you do so many crimes. As the cops get to see you on a daily basis, they get to know your face and you're even more likely to spend quality time with them and Bubba.
Q: How Do I Buy A Horse?
A: Horses can't be sold to just anyone. You need to be either a civilian or a rank higher than a hoodlum. Horses cost vary in cost, but will be cheaper if being sold by the system rather than another user. They can be profitable, but not as profitable as other forms of income.
Q; What is the advantage of being in a crew as opposed to working for yourself?
A; My response in times of old would be to lecture on the safety of crews, a little history will be required. In previous versions of this game we had the 'unsponserd'. These were gangsters with no home or family - back then you could see other people's rank and sponser when clicking on their profile. Most families had a rule that you could wack unsponseres after they were 48 hours old, giving them a chance to get into a family. These days you cannot see if others are in a family or not (because Street Bosses were getting wacked as soon as they achieved that rank), as a result everyone is getting wacked.
As for the advantages of joining a crew these days... It is not joining 'a crew' which is an advantage, it is which crew to join. There are many inexperienced bosses around who can do very little for you, but some crews do offer protection. Look at an example; you get mugged by some mugger, you mug him back and then he shoots at you - what happens? Well, if you are alone then you shoot back, if you dont have a gun - you head for the hills. If you have a family, you tell your boss and he deals with it, you need not worry about anything else.
There are also a few other points which are advantageous of joining a family; it increases your defence points ie - it is harder for you to die when in a crew and even harder when in your crew's home town. It gives you an opportunity to meet more people and enjoy some of the finer aspects of this role play game.
Finally, the idea of this game is to reach as high a rank as possible - it would be very difficult to do that alone. If you join a crew then it would be far easier to achieve your desired ranks (partly because of the reasons already mentioned and partly because you wont have to pay to get made provided your boss is already a made man).
At the end of the day, the choice is yours, but remember - if you decide to take advantage of a crew, it is the one you pick that counts!!!! Dont work for any old bum.
Q; How can I see what crews are active in my area? Is there any way besides asking around on the streets?
A; Unfortunately there is no fool proof way to find crews, since you can no longer see the ranks on others' profiles. However, those who are recruiting may say so in they're quote, so check your locals for those with tag lines saying 'selectively recruiting' or 'mail me for an invite' etc. Also keep your eye on the street for posts from crew leaders. It probably isn't the best way to post a thread offering your services, this makes you look very amateur and you won't attract the 'crem de la crem' of the leaders.
Also make sure you read previous posts re selection of your crew leader.

FAQ Advanced II
Q: How Do I Recruit Members?
A: Difficult this one. One person's method is another person's member whoring. However, when I was SB I used to send out the following mail to new members. This method found approval from all other leaders at the time so try this;
=============EXAMPLE================
Hey Pal,
Best way to get on in this world is to get yourself in a crew. Because of the way the game is at the moment, most leaders are recruiting blind. So send them something comprehensible (read their profile first, they may have outlined someone to send mails to), most likely you'll receive an invite. Picking your crewleader is an important part of your mafia career, you will probably serve under them for quite some time. I have a family of my own and should you feel that I am your best option then mail me when you turn thug telling me a little about yourself and I'll help you out.
Petty, Petty, Petty – this is the main route to promotion it seems. You may also want to turn off the resist arrest option in your profile, tends to lead to an early grave.
Once in a crew you can make the most of the crew threads and the knowledge of your fellow members. Hope this helps
Respect
=============END OF EXAMPLE================
Q; How do we get rid of underground groups?
A; Hmmm, now this question presumes that you WANT to get rid of these groups. In my experience, to an extent it can be better the devil you know. But, should you really want to get rid of these groups, I'll tell you the secret to doing it.....NOTHING!!! That's right. These groups thrive on the publicity and fame. If, every time they shot someone or made an announcement in the street or made an insult at a funeral, the general public simply walked away then they would get bored - less publicity means less potential members. Less potential members means a short life span, but remember that with the death of one comes the creation of another and intrigue tends to get the better of most new members, with only the more experienced seeing these groups as parallels of each other. So, getting rid of them may be an exercise which is pretty pointless, one thing not to do however is moan. These people ARE NOT CHEATING! They don't have dupe accounts, so they play by the rules – although the role play is lost on some when they carry vendettas into new characters. Another argument is that the role play is strong – they look to avenge their fathers deaths etc.
Q: How Do I Get Made?
A: Work your plums off!! Contrary to popular belief, this has nothing to do how many people are in your crew! You will, however, need to buy a HQ for a Made Man which can cost upwards of £1 mill, so start saving and earning!! Apparently there are new options available to Made Men which I will update when they are revealed!! Some believe that church activity plays some part due to an article printed in the paper many moons ago. This, however, is unconfirmed. Those I have spoken to who have achieved this rank denied making huge donations – this author is inconclusive on the matter!
Q: As a Made Man, what is my role?
A: Hmmm, the most difficult question so far. Some believe that you have a duty to protect the wider community, others simply see you as a rank above Hoodlum. All I can advise is that you follow your initiative and make sure you have an organised structure to cope with all the problems that having a real family can bring!

Thread Guide Part IV: STREET CLEANERS AND THEIR ROLE:
Street Cleaners are the forum moderators that remove any unwanted or inappropriate threads and posts. These moderators have been appointed by the Administrators, and as such, are Policed by the Administrators. If you have a complaint with a deleted thread, talk to a street cleaner, if you are not happy with the outcome, talk to an Admin. The numbers side of the thread removal system is explained below, in case you were wondering why you or a friend has a negative thread/post count.
Every time you post a thread in the Street, General or bars it adds one thread to your count. So:
Good thread = +1
Every time a cleaner removes a bad thread, i.e. one that falls within the cleaning guidelines, it removes two from your post count. So:
Bad thread = 1-2 = -1
Every time you post something in the Admin forum that has been addressed elsewhere in the admin forum, you will get five points removed. So:
Dupe thread = 1-5 = -4
Also please note that posts with excess punctuation marks in their titles (!!!!%%%**^^^ etc) will be deleted as a matter of course, regardless of their content. This is to keep the forums looking tidy, and uniform.
In addition, we now have off-game forums located through the screen after your initial login. This is now for all non-game related threads and posts, the General forum is for game-related threads only.
This is a Role Play Game. That means you role play your character. It's not about points, posts, thread counts, mail and so on. It's about who you are. If your character is good and you role play it well, you will rank. If your character is not so good, well, live with it, join a family, and be the best you can be without aiming to be Godfather in 5 minutes flat. Not everyone will be able to reach the dizzy heights of high rank. Winning in this game means longevity, respect and having people come to you when they have a problem. Winning is not being a high rank for five minutes before someone takes you down for being "That idiot spammer who just got there by posting a lot of crap."
