1920's To 1950's'Rock 'n' Roll

Jail house songs exist in most musical genres whether it be Country, Blues, Jazz or Rock 'n' Roll - most of which are represented here on this excellent album.

Many of the musicians featured on BANGED UP were born on the wrong side of the tracks, poverty and other social factors forcing them to use their instruments as a weapon against the harsh realities of everyday life, or at the very least reflect what was all about them.

The places that they played often attracted trouble, whether that be in the local Bar Room, Speak Easy, or Honky Tonk, crime, drinking and loose women where never far away. Times were hard - you could be locked up just for being black on the charge of vagrancy! Many famous musicians have spent time in prison and some even recorded there, such as Leadbelly and Johnny Cash.

These songs from the underbelly of society, though recorded over fifty years ago, show dramatically how society has not changed much, Prisons are still being built to cater for the people that society helps to create - and then cannot handle!

 

Glorior Belli

Hailing from France, Glorior Belli came out from the dark in 2002. The first demo Evil Archaic Order was released in mid-summer 2004, followed by the first album O? Lavdate Dominvs in May 2005.

Despite their exquisitely filthy and brutal nature, their recordings emit a mesmerizing otherworldly resonance that cannot be denied. An ominous rumble and surge, always moving forward with various points of tension and terror! Glorior Bellis' whole aesthetic has a strangely melodic bent that helps it to stand out from other black metal records. Somehow they manage to write bestial art that is ultra-catchy while at the same time being suffocatingly black and grim.

"Manifesting the Raging Beast" is their second full length album and a first for their new label-coven: Southern Lord.

Glorior Belli hold their own against other classic black metal Southern Lord releases like: Craft, Leviathan, Deathspell Omega, and Funeral Mist, as well as creating their own unique sound.

The style is Techno / Acid / House / Drum and Bass / Experimental / Ambient... Basically all electronic/dance styles, i.e Braindance. Music lovers and Internet fiends will be familiar with his notorious performances on Resonance FM and Radio 1 Breezeblock sessions.

Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci have led progressive Metallers Dream Theater since its inception, having met during their freshmen year at Boston's Berklee School of Music in 1985 where they shared a dual love of Rush and Iron Maiden. The band found vocalist James LaBrie in 1991, and recorded Images and Words. They then crafted six ever more complex, uncompromising studio records from 1994 to 2005, including the 1999 concept album Scenes From A Memory and 2003's dark, ultra-heavy Train Of Thought. Their ninth album, Systematic Chaos, is comprised of the kind of punishingly complex, technically accomplished, and simply sprawling —which is to say, uncompromising— progressive rock that has endeared them to fans all over the world for over 20 years. The shortest song, "Forsaken" runs just over 5 & ½ minutes, and the longest, "In the Presence of Enemies" a two-part epic that opens and closes the album, spans over 25 minutes. Neil Landstrumm 'Restaurant Of Assassins'

A stalwart of the UK electronic music scene since 1994 Neil Landstrumm has released work on many of the most recognised labels in the industry.
Starting with Peacefrog, shifting gears to Berlins' Tresor Records he then upped the bass-game onto arguably the UK's most important electronic label of the moment, Planet Mu.
Neil Landstrumm is an artist who always seems to be at the spearhead of experimental, dancehall low frequency electronics. Never an artist to rest on his laurels and churn out the same old, he has built a career on being
unpredictable and open to new perspectives from which to hone his sound.
With the heaviest subs this side of Chapeltown, Landstrumm seeks new lows with 'Restaurant of Assasins' bringing together classic UK techno vibes and modern dubstep with a refreshed rave sensibility. me at least about it. This is the most versatile Sonata album yet, more "hooky", heavier in many ways, beautiful melodies, bigger production... like soul food! My personal highlights include "My Dream's
but a Drop of Fuel for a Nightmare" which is very theatrical piece of... well, arty rock. But hey, I always like the weird songs better. Be sure, you can still also find your "normal" Sonata Arctica on the
record. People should not get too hooked on the words like "change", they're bound to hear and read when they go through magazines. But sure as hell we did not redo something we've done before!
"Unia". It's like a treasure hunt, might demand some work to get there, going through in clue at time, but in the end it's a rewarding adventure. As every great album should be."

In the history of heavy rock and roll, the greatest line-up is the three-piece power trio. Think of bands from The Groundhogs, to classic Motorhead, from Cream or The Jimi Hendrix Experience, to Sebadoh and Nirvana. There's something about the structure, economy and mutual support of that three-piece guitar, bass and drums line-up that makes everything possible. Winters are in that classic rock tradition: an undeniably heavy band but one rooted as much in the pop art tradition of post-mod rock rather than traditional heavy metal. Winters are definitely not another anonymous sludgier-than-thou funeral doom combo. The problem with most stoner bands – and indeed bands from any underground metal genre – is that their influences tend to be other stoner bands. It's a bit like caged monkeys eating their own faeces. Winters break the mould of predictability, by managing to mix ultra heavy sludge riffs with a melodic kind of pop sensibility.



SONIC SYNDICATE EDEN FIRE
Sonic Syndicate have proven themselves to be an international force. Perhaps that realization came in 2006 when Sweden Rock Festival hand picked the band to be on a bill which featured renowned artists such as Arch Enemy, Evergrey, Entombed, Def Leppard and many more. 2006 also brought change to Sonic Syndicate's lineup. Second vocalist Roland Johansson, whose talents can also beheard on the Eden Fire single "Jailbreak" joined the ranks along with new drummer John Bengtsson. With a new and refined lineup, Sonic Syndicate has steamrolled into 2007 with full impact. The band
has joined forces with Nuclear Blast Records for their sophomore release, Only Inhuman, which is due out in May of 2007 and is expected to hit pop charts all across Europe. The band is also scheduled to tour heavily in support of Only Inhuman such as appearances at Wacken Open Air, Gates of Metal, and Up From The Ground festivals this summer. Thompson's latest work, "Sweet Warrior" released May 28th his first electric album since 2003's "The Old Kit Bag", mates the incendiary sounds of some of the artist's most memorable recordings with timely & provocative new songs. When asked why he has chosen to plug in again, Thompson replies (tongue partially in cheek, as usual), "I tend to organize my writing in piles, and the electric pile was becoming especially big, so that's the one I chose to go to." He adds that, although the album wasn't assembled thematically, on reflection it seems to keep returning to the subject of "combat, in love as well as in war."

Otis Grand, the Gentle Giant of the blues, has absorbed a wide spectrum of Blues styles in the past four decades and now leads the hottest true blues and R&B band around today. 'Bigfoot/Bum Troubler' 12"

Following in the footsteps of his last two 12"s on Grid; 'Swan Cake' and 'Hand Grenade' which are both still flying off the shelves, this will undoubtably make it a hat trick.

'Big Foot' kicks off with big crunchy beats that punch right through, giving way to eerie pad stabs as he goes deep, lulling the listener into a trance before the drums kick back in with a sharp hypnotic bassline which slips and slides around.

'Bum Troubler' is a more chilled out affair, clean rolling drums, bouncing bongos and female vocal samples sit alongside crisp refreshing pads which gently morph into an organic bassline.

Goon Moon 'Licker's Last Leg'

Goon Moon features Jeordie White, who is better known as Twiggy Ramirez from Marilyn Manson and current bassist for Nine Inch Nails, and Chris Goss, record producer for the likes of Kyuss and Queens Of The Stone Age, while also being the frontman of desert rock band Masters Of Reality.

Helping them out on this record are Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age), Josh Freese (The Vandals / Devo / A Perfect Circle / NIN), Dave Catching (Eagles Of Death Metal / Mondo Generator), Whitey Kirst (Iggy Pop), and Peter Perdichizzi (The Flys).

Musically, the album is a true musical potpourri, which reflects the group's across-the-boards influences. There is no denying the highly recognizable sounds of Queens Of The Stone Age/Eagles Of Death Metal and NIN, twelve songs and five years in the making, it can only be described as a collage of hippie/goth/retro sounds, covering a period from the 70's through the early 00's.

'Licker's Last Leg' includes a cover of the early Bee Gees song 'Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You' which White chalks up to being a 'huge Brit-pop fan'.

With White being on a world tour with Nine Inch Nails and Goss hard at work producing the next Queens Of The Stone Age album, a tour seems out of the question, but they are confident they will be able to play at least a few shows in support of the new album.

After a two year hiatus, Sole returns to Anticon under his Mansbestfriend alias to release a compelling new instrumental record.

While past Mansbestfriend projects dwell in a glorious sort of doom, 'Poly.sci.187' plays ethereal and heavy like a series of ghost dreams drifting through thick Arizona air.

The title reads as the foregone conclusion of Sole's notable ventures (both philosophical and literal) into a world of human strife and dirty politics: Political Science: This Shit'll Kill You. Without true lyrical content, the instrumental 'Poly.sci.187' occupies a space more reflective than edifying, its songs positing suggestion and sentiment in the mind of the listener about our most current troubled times.

'Allieverwanted' kicks in with the head-nodding fury of a rap banger (think Wu-tang Clan's East Meets Wild West) all big synth styles, pulsing beat and crunchy organ tones with a Sole sample rattling around. 'High Noon & Sobered' is an icy overture for white noise and violin and 'How Big is Space' bleeds eerie weirdness over booty beats gone sci-fi. From start to finish, 'Poly.sci.187' is filled with such sonic explorations.

Make It Ride, the debut album from Vatican DC is here. Their last two singles were both Records of the Week on Lauren's XFM breakfast show and Zane Lowe has been, as he put it "a full blown fan" from day one. Their debut song, Antisocial, is his official Anti-Valentines Day Anthem and he gave it another spin last month. He was also a huge supporter of the second single off the album, Side to Side. Eddy Temple Morris was their first champion, Claire Sturgess gave the first single from the album ROW and they have done sessions for Zane and Xfm Music Response.. Last year they were the only support band who didn't get bottled off the stage at The Prodigy's triumphant run of shows to support their greatest hits release, so they were asked back again and again and ended up doing practically the whole tour. YOU IN REVERSE When Built To Spill wanted to find out what their music sounded like they locked themselves in Doug Martsch's garage. Without a tentative conclusion or even a hypothesis the four members began to experiment. Their collaborative efforts lasted seasons and yielded dozens of hours of ADAT tape. The resulting album 'You In Reverse' documents the newest branch of Built To Spill's chaotic yet elegant evolution. In the five years since the band's most recent effort 'Ancient Melodies Of The Future' Built To Spill took an eighteen-month vacation and returned to work by jamming and recording their hours-long music explorations. With a desire to retain the impromptu organic feel of these jams the group tried to capture loose and live moments resulting in a more natural sounding album. 'You In Reverse' resonates with relationships the way the band as a whole responds to music and to each other. The songs are haunting rather than catchy. Each musical thought is surprising and complete. Doug's lyrics hint at politics but could also be personal. As usual the words lining the songs are neither directive nor dogmatic.
Rational thoughts are constantly sacrificed to the metric and melodic needs of each song. No message blares forth and yet it's understood.

The buzz around the new Armand Van Helden material right now is incredible – 'Touch Your Toes' featuring Fat Joe and BL got a limited release late in 2006 and demand has carried through until now and is showing no signs of slowing. Meanwhile, the first single proper to be taken from the album, 'NYC Beat', has just been mailed out and the DJ reactions have been incredible, whilst the radio response has been nothing short of massive, with all of the key specialists (Zane Lowe, Pete Tong, Annie Mac) fully on board and the daytime radio producers requesting copies now.
The biggest singles from the album are yet to come – 'I Want Your Soul' and 'Je T'aime' have hit written all over them.



THE SEA AND CAKE
EVERYBODY
The Sea and Cake are back with 'Everybody', the band's first full length in over four years. The record finds the band continuing to perfect their singular brand of dreamlike, hot-buttered pop music that sounds delicately handcrafted, yet effortless all the same. Sheets of glowing guitar tones skip along propulsive percussion underscored by gently funky, introspective basslines, all adorned by breathlessly delivered lines of lyrical poetry.
The band moves away from their standard sound on a number of tracks here, including the jittery 'Exact to Me' with its percussive guitar lines blending African highlife and rocksteady rhythms, and on the intimately spare 'Lightning', a song that went through several rewrites and, in the process, revealed the title of the album. "It was such a hard won battle, I don't think most tunes would have stood up to such abuse." The result is a hauntingly simplified song that serves as a fine centerpiece on this sprawling album. ?For the first time in their 14 year career since their 1993 self-titled debut, the band has enlisted the recording efforts of someone other than McEntire, this time calling on the talents of Brian Paulson, a producer with a miles-long resume that includes work with Slint, Wilco, and TJ's own Angela Desveaux, among hundreds of others.
The band plans to tour in support of this record, and has a few festival appearances in the works for the summer months. The Sea and Cake have made a record for Everybody.

Shortly after releasing 'Everyday', which achieved great critical and commercial success (selling over 100,000 units) Jason Swinscoe relocated from East London to Paris. Here he began work on the instrumentals which would form the basis of his new record. Having completed a rough version by early 2005, he gave this to a friend who disappeared for 3 weeks and came back with short story scripts in which each scene represented a story of a different time in life, expressing the emotions which underpin the journey from birth to death. Jason then took this and worked some more on the tracks, and in turn gave this back to his scriptwriter, the two aspects of the project developing alongside one another.
Gradually, Swinscoe recruited suitable vocalists for the atmospheres and themes he wanted to deal with. The remarkable Fontella Bass is the woman behind both legendary soul number 'Rescue Me' as well as some of the Art Ensemble of Chicago's finest moments, had worked on 'Everyday' and was an obvious choice to voice the parts of the elderly protagonist that Swinscoe envisaged. Mercury-nominated Lou Rhodes is not only a fantastic singer but a young mother and so perfect for the "mid-life" singer. The as-yet unheralded Patrick Watson, a remarkable vocalist from Montreal, became the youngest of the trio.

BLACKIE & THE RODEO KINGS
LET'S FROLIC
In the 3 years since the release their Juno nominated recording BARK, Blackie & the Rodeo Kings been very busy. They appeared live on the Juno and the CCMA Award shows; toured across Canada with country legend Merle Haggard, toured the U.S. on the heels of a top 15 Americana radio hit and all three founding members (Stephen Fearing, Colin Linden and Tom Wilson) released solo CDs.
Last year the band went into the legendary Bearsville Studio with long time collaborators Richard Bell (keyboards), John Dymond (bass) and Gary Craig (drums) to record their fourth album. Added to the mix were guest appearances from Garth Hudson (the Band), Daniel Lanois, Pam Tillis, Malcolm Burn, Wayne Jackson and John Wynot. The sessions went so well, were so creative and fun that they ended up recording 29 songs, too much for just one CD. As a result, Let's Frolic will be followed-up with, Let's Frolic Again, sometime later in 2007.
Let's Frolic features stellar yet soulful playing, superb songwriting and heartfelt vocals. "House of Soul" is a Daniel Lanois penned song which he handed over to the band with one request, which was to make him cry. Reports are that he was brought to tears when he heard it.

Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys, are reforming and the next 2 years will see them re-visiting their groundbreaking album "Architecture & Morality", touring the UK and Germany with a 120-piece Orchestra and Choir, creating an audio-visual installation with the award winning artist Peter Savile and a joint live venture with The London Philharmonic Orchestra. OMD formed in the late 70's and became quickly established as one of the UK's finest left-of-centre groups. The disc was produced by Ken 'Fatman' Gordon, one of the most important sound system operators active in Britain during the 1970s: because Fatman hailed from Waterhouse and still had family members in the area, he enjoyed a close association with many of the leading producers and artists that hailed from that vibrant west Kingston slum; he was a regular visitor to King Tubby's legendary dub studio in Waterhouse and also regularly cut special exclusive mixes of new material at various rival studios such as Lee Perry's Black Ark, Channel One and Joe Gibbs.
As Fatman had already been releasing Prince Jammy's early productions in Britain, and as Jammy was rapidly rising to be one of the most respected producers and engineers of the period, it came as no surprise that Jammy mixed the first side of this disc; side two features the work of 'Crucial Bunny' Graham, aka 'Bunny Tom Tom,' one of the in-house engineers at Channel One studio.
Highlights of the album, which has never been reissued and remains highly sought-after, include thoroughly dubwise cuts of Johnnie Clarke's 'Play Fool Fe Catch Wise,' Black Uhuru's post-rockers take of the Wailers' 'Sun Is Shining,' and Johnny Clarke/I Roy's supreme re-working of 'Satta.'


RUSH
SNAKES AND ARROWS
30th April sees the long awaited return of Rush with a brand new album 'Snakes And Arrows', their first new collection of original material in nearly five years. The album was recorded in the autumn of 2006 with grammy award winner Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver) with Rush co-producing. Its big, it's bold and some of their best work in years. Since releasing their self-titled debut album in 1974, Rush have been universally regarded as one of the most inventive and exciting groups in rock today. The 'Snakes And Arrows' stadium world-tour kicks off in the states in June and comes to Europe in October with seven stadium dates in the UK including two dates at Wembley Arena.

ELLIOT SMITH
NEW MOON
Arguably the most gifted songwriter of his generation Elliott Smith produced a large body of work that includes five solo albums as well as 'From A Basement On The Hill' (2004). 'New Moon' contains 24 songs recorded between 1994-1997 a prolific time in Smith's career when he recorded his self-titled album and 'Either/Or' (both also released by Domino). Reviews have been confirmed in all the monthlies and some reviews are to be accompanied with interviews with Larry Crane friend of Elliott and compiler of the compilation. Word magazine will be doing a feature on Elliott's music. The makers of the recent Radio 2 Joni Mitchell documentary have expressed an interest in working on a doc on Elliott and his music.
DINOSAUR JR BEYOND The long awaited new album from the original line-up of J Mascis Lou Barlow and Murph - collectively Dinosaur Jr. 2005 saw the original trio reunited for several live dates culminating in May 2006 with a day curated by the band at All Tomorrows Parties. Such was the demand to see them play together they had to perform two sets to huge acclaim. It was this success which led the band to return to the studio and produce new material. They remain recognisably Dinosaur Jr; the album retains their originalraw and distorted sound whilst reflecting a changedperhaps more mature approach to songwriting. The record includes two tracks written by bassist Lou 'Sebadoh' Barlow.
