Come join Long Island Animal Advocates (LIAA) and Animal Defense League of Long Island (ADL-LI) on Saturday, January 5th from 1-3pm in front of Barbatsuly Sideris at 102 Main Street in Port Washington, NY. On Saturday, December 29th a group of activists from the above organizations met in front of Sign of the Furs located at 114 Main Street in Port Washington. After an hour of getting support from local residents while demonstrating on the sidewalk corner near the fur store, the group decided to walk a block over to Barbatsuly Sideris. They held a banner with faux fur exclaiming that 50 Dead Animals = 1 Fur Coat. After more support from the community, the store owner come out to confront the activists. He said they could not remain on the sidewalk in front of his store. He wanted the group to leave and for them to "be humyn beings", as if a furrier knows anything about that! He then said he was calling the police to "enforce the law". Much to his embarrassment, Nassau County and Village of Port Washington police arrived and told the activists they have every right to remain where they are. However, a police officer warned the group to be safe and not to antagonize the owner, while wishing everyone a happy new year. As the demo was winding down, activists noticed the owner staring at them from inside the store. They waved goodbye, indicating that they were leaving the area. At this time, the owner ran outside to physically threaten the group saying that he will "knock their teeth out!". As a compassionate community we cannot allow a rogue furrier to hurl threats at us while we uphold our 1st amendment right to protest. Come to the most important demo of the year: WHEN: Saturday, January 5th, 2008 from 1-3pm WHERE: Barbatsuly Sideris – 102 Main Street in Port Washington FOR MORE INFO: Call (516) 568-4424 Other targets to be demo'ed following fur demo...

Crazy Freddy's Motor Sports is giving $300 gift certificates to Puppy City, a purebred dog store in Brooklyn, for those that purchase a motor vehicle of at least the same value. Crazy Freddy's has locations on Long Island in Massapequa, Freeport, Commack, and Port Jefferson Station. Puppy mills are distinguished by their inhumane conditions and the constant breeding of unhealthy and genetically defective dogs solely for profit. Very often the dogs in puppy mills are covered with matted, filthy hair, their teeth are rotting and their eyes have ulcers. Many dogs jaws have become rotted because of tooth decay. By cross promoting with Puppy City, Crazy Freddy's is allowing the horrors of puppy mills to continue. Please tell these stores that cross promoting with Puppy City is a horrible idea! In conclusion of the Northeast Weekend Mini-Tour to shut down HLS, over a dozen activists from all over the tri-state area converged in snowy & icy below 30 degree weather conditions on Long Island on Sunday December 2nd. While passing through Westbury, activists stood in front of Alexis & Gianni on a day that the store was having a blow-out sale. They couldn't pass up the opportunity to unfurl a huge anti-fur banner outside the store protesting the death and torture of the animals it takes to make the bourgeois status symbol of a fur coat. The community of Westbury showed support for the activists as people stopped to read the signs and banners, while cars honked in solidarity with the protest. Absolutely no one came into Alexis & Gianni for the duration of the protest! As the tour began, activists headed to the home of David L. Carey in Cold Spring Harbor. Mr. Carey is an attorney for the New York Stock Exchange's (NYSE) online trading division, ARCA. After HLS was initially de-listed from Wall Street, NYSE ARCA gave in to shareholder pressure and began trading HLS' stock (ticker: LSR) once again. Not having any sidewalks to stand on (cause that's just the way rich neighborhoods are built) activists successfully claimed the streets with banners and signs outside of David's house holding him personally responsible for the 500 deaths a day on which he profits. A neighbor came out as many opened their windows to hear the protesters speaking out about the animal torture and death of which their neighbor is complicit in. Activists invited David outside for a discussion on how he can support the killing of cats and dogs, yet have a dog of his own. Instead family members waited inside the festively decorated home paid for undoubtedly by blood money. Although protesters abided by all laws and were peaceful, Suffolk County cops arrived as the demonstration was ending and proceeded to intimidate and provoke activists by following and stopping cars, while attempting to incriminate the protesters. Activists were followed by the officers all the way to the Nassau County line, where the cops found themselves out of their jurisdiction.
The third stop was at NYSE ARCA Vice President Richard M. Dapcic's swanky abode in Massapequa. Activists delivered a hard-hitting, to-the-point after dark demo reminding Richard and his neighbors once again about the cruel way he chooses to make a living. Activists chanted that if the neighborhood felt that their evening was interrupted, ruined, or inconvenienced, they had no one to blame except for Richard and his continued participating in killing animals for profit. ...and as always, we'll be back!

ALL TO ACTION!!! THE DEER HUNT IS ON IN LLOYD HARBOR ONCE AGAIN!!!
THERE IS A MASS CALL-IN SCHEDULE FOR THIS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16th!
THE SITUATION:
The deer hunt in Lloyd Harbor, NY continues this year, though it's hard to believe there are any deer left after last years mass-murder... For years, activists have been working on ending this cruel and unnecessary hunt, some years being more successful than others. This year, Mayor Leland Hairr and the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) strike again...
There is a massive amount of data that suggests the hunt is terribly unnecessary. The hunt takes place in two locations, Caumsett State Park and the Seminary of Immaculate Conception. Heckscher State Park, not too far from Lloyd Harbor has much less land and a much larger deer population. There hasn't been a hunt at Heckscher in many many years. The deer and area residents are able to live happily & healthily in harmony. Leland Hairr suggests that the deer in Lloyd Harbor are a danger to the residents, citing car accidents, Lyme disease and oh... thats right... they're eating peoples flowers! F.O.I.A requests have proven that the number of auto accidents involving deer has remained stable for years and years, usually about one per year. And there is only one reported case of Lyme disease in the area in the last several years. Certainly the guns being fired within 100 yards of peoples homes last year posed a much greater threat to the residents of Lloyd Harbor... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -

On Sunday, September 2nd over a dozen activists from the tri-state area converged upon the houses of a couple of individuals who profit off the torture at HLS by serving as their auditors. The group took over the cul-de-sac of Barry Bertiger's luxury house in Marlboro, NJ naming and shaming him. The police arrived to point out where the demonstrators could stand, making them even more visible to the neighbors. An attempt was made to call Barry at home, but his answering machine picked up. At this point, his phone number was made public to neighbors who may not be as comfortable confronting Barry face-to-face because of his violent tendencies. After almost half an hour, the crew warned Barry that they'll be back as they headed to the posh abode of Larry Meril in Saddle River, NJ. Larry was warned that much larger financial institutions, such as Merrill Lynch, have divested from HLS. A chant of, "You must, you must, you must understand. The blood, the blood, the blood is on YOUR HANDS!" proclaimed Larry's culpability. Shortly thereafter, Montvale police arrived. Previously, Saddle River police had jurisdiction. This time, officer friendly showed us a picture of a beagle on his cell phone while his partner warned us that a neighbor's noise complaint would give everyone tickets. Before departing, the activists let it known that, "Larry Meril, you can't hide. We charge you with ecocide!".

Members of the Long Island Animal Defense League joined forces with New Jersey Anarchists Against HLS for a couple of demos at the houses of HLS auditors late in the morning, early in the afternoon in New Jersey on a mild Sunday, August 26th. After converging at a local square, the activists took to the Saddle River home of HLS auditor Larry Meril. While Larry hid behind the curtains of his extravagant suburban residence, interstate activists named and shamed this cruelty causing fool. Larry better stop his foolish ways, as so many other auditing firms much more powerful than his already have by severing their ties with HLS. As the group was ready to head to the next target, a couple of Saddle River's finest rolled onto the scene. Well aware of the injunction, they tried to move the demonstrators a few feet further from the house. Instead of a few feet, the crew drove to Wayne for a meet & greet with Larry's partner Leslie Solomon. Better known as Les, this individual more often is found hiding in his log cabin home. Some of the neighbors have been brainwashed by Les, claiming that its acceptable for the atrocities to go on at HLS because "they are animals" and "that its more important to help those in Iraq". The police arrived and promptly demanded to find out who was in charge. Autonomy led the group to say everyone is involved, so the authorities exclaimed that no one was to continue chanting. When asked what the decibel threshold was, the officer said, "When it becomes not nice". The activists took to a roving demo up and down the block, while the lakefront community was visually reminded of their puppy killing neighbor.
Chanting and long drives make committed activists hungry, as a vegan potluck at a Long Island park proved to be the perfect respite. The crew regrouped and took to the waterfront area home of NYSE ARCA Vice President Richard Dapcic. After a speak out about Richard's continuance of trading LSR stock and the pain & suffering he is responsible for, a round of chants from his sidewalk ensued. At this point, Richard's hired arm neighbor attempted to fire a baseball in the crowd. Fortunately, the bro must have been cut from Massapequa High School's Junior Varsity team as it bounced far away onto the street. Undeterred, the demonstrators went on about horrors inside HLS. This must have really infuriated the neighbors because a couple of them became delusional. One of them smacked down a sign showing a beagle puppy with the word, "Why?". Another came from behind and approached an activist who was filming the demonstration. In both cases, the aggression was an example of assault upon the activists. Despite the unnecessary physical exchange, the demo continued. At this juncture the chant of, "Polluting the land, polluting the water. Profiting off the animal's slaughter." changed to "wasting the water" and as neighbors tried to soak the activists from across the street with a garden hose. "All your money, all your lies" became "All your money, hose wielding guys". Fortunately, the stream of water didn't reach the group, while they certainly reached out to the entire neighborhood about Richard's culpability. Several police cars arrived as the point was made that they won't rest until he drops HLS. Finally, Richard appeared from his car claiming he has "no idea" what this is about. Deny all you want, Richard, but you cannot hide the suffering that you inflict on the voiceless!
And, as always, we'll be back...

www.AnimalDefense.infoOn Thursday, August 9th the Long Island Animal Defense League invited community members out to a vegan potluck at Eisenhower Park. While enjoying some homemade delicacies and socializing, the focus was thrust upon an individual who denies even the most basic care and compassion towards non-humyn animals: Richard M. Dapcic the VP of NYSE ARCA. For those who couldn't attend the demo, feel free to contact him at rdapcic@nyse.com, while his office number is (212) 656-2131. This individual has allowed Huntingdon Life Sciences the ability to trade their stock over the Internet. He perpetuates the atrocities at HLS, while reaping the profits of torture. Double-digit demoers converged on the sidewalk in front of his house in the evening. His front light was on, illuminating a couple of obnoxiously large SUVs paid for with blood money. Chants immediately rained down of, "Puppy killer" and "Murderer" demanding he leave town. It was at this point that an irate neighbor confronted a demonstrator who was naming and shaming Mr. Dapcic. Another ADLer tried to provide conflict resolution, but was shoved to the street. The minor scrape he suffered should have served to deter the neighbor from resorting to physical force, but he went mental and brought out his 4-year old daughter. She was hysterical as her father displayed a complete lack of concern forcing his daughter into a chaotic situation of which his greedy neighbor was being targeted with. Another neighbor apologized for this neighbor's stupidity and felt horrible knowing what Richard is responsible for. Chants persisted explaining that NYSE ARCA's ties to HLS (ticker: LSR) have lead to countless instances of children suffering, something way more traumatizing than a 20 minute session of loud chanting. Promises of returning until Richard makes the right decision led the neighbors to realize they must hold this pervert accountable! As the demonstration ended a large dog ran in our direction, seemingly wishing us the best of luck as we continue this hard fought campaign.

On June 6th, the SHUT THEM DOWN tour came to New York. Over 30 activists stood outside the NYSE Stock Exchange letting employees and passersby's know exactly what kind of cruelty NYSE ARCA is responsible for by listing HLS on the stock market. Activists chanted slogans for over an hour, with 3 bullhorns and a banner demanding they drop LSRI. The narrow, car-free streets of Wall Street made the voices sound even louder. Activists passed out literature about HLS to let passersby's know what was going on. The demo ended by letting ARCA know that we will keep coming back to their safe little white washed Wall Street to expose the blood on their hands until they drop HLS. Activists then proceeded to Long Island for another loud and well attended demo outside of the Overton Freight Office, a company which ships beagles and other animals for HLS to torture and kill for nothing but profit. After about a half-hour of loud chanting, the cops showed up to say that Overton had moved. Activists were allowed inside to see for themselves and indeed there was no sign of the company being in the multi-storied building. The demo continued for a bit afterwards, as many activists had doubts that the cops were telling the truth or that Overton was simply on another floor, unmarked. It was especially sketchy considering several cops converged on Overton over 6 hours prior to the demo, what were they up to? Internet sources later revealed that they are indeed still at that location. Score one for the activists! En route to the next demo one car of activists was pulled over for a minor traffic infraction. Their car was searched without consent and two passengers were forced to give ID and had their bags searched. The driver was arrested allegedly carrying something that was construed as a weapon, while the other two were able to get away. The activists were told that the car was searched because they exercised their right to remain silent and refused to answer personal questions, an obvious infraction of their rights and a major violation by the police. To add insult to injury, the car was impounded. The rest of the activists went on to demo Howard Woltmann's house, the President of Overton Freight who has had the pleasure of many visits from activists. Dozens of activists chanted with signs and banners in this suburban neighborhood. The cops showed up after about 10-15 minutes, but the activists continued chanting. No officer ever told them to quiet down or stop. The cops started physically pulling people out of the line formed on the sidewalk and asked for ID. When some refused they proceeded to arrest them, others were simply arrested for demonstrating at all. 7 out of state activists who had come to show their anger at HLS were arrested. One officer had a shirt on with a confederate flag which read, "Suck, Bang and Blow," which simply confirms our belief that the cops are violent, racist, sexist thugs. The rest of the activists received summonses for the same charge: Unreasonable noise. One activist, who was merely videotaping the demonstration, received a summons for excessive noise. One of the passengers from the car that was pulled over had arrived at the end of the demo and an activist who was at the demo but had completely lost his voice received summonses, nonetheless. All of this was on videotape. Throughout the arrests and writing of summons the cops continued to ask personal questions, such as where people went to school, phone numbers, their social security numbers, etc. Overall, a gross violation by the police of nearly every right supposedly granted in this country to its citizens. There were 10-15 cops and private investigators (PI), including a fed who once posed as an ADL member and attended several demos in past years. He previously came out as a fed, which activists were fairly certain of previously, at a deer hunt demo. This fed, who went by the fake name of 'Scott Winters', spewed off a bunch of information about an activist who never met him before. He then tried to insult another long-time ADL volunteer by telling him that he's nearly 27 years old and needs to get a life. As if "Scott" should speak. He certainly needs to be on the defensive because it must be pretty hard for him to sleep at night, living a life of lies. Howard Woltmann himself was present and in cohorts with the police and PIs. Howard must be pretty scared to have had all this law enforcement to 'protect' him from the activist's voices and rage. If he thinks this will stop him from getting 'visits', he's dead wrong. Several neighbors across the street looked on in horror at the police abusing the rights of activists. They commented that the police actions were absurd, we had the right to protest and to make noise and were further horrified to hear about the torture at HLS and their neighbor's involvement in it. One of them said in a worried tone of voice that she didn't want her dog getting anywhere near Howard's house, for fear he might ship it off to HLS. We left with their encouragement despite police repression: "See, you try and do a good thing and look how you get treated!" Bulletins went out over the internet and activists locally and from hundreds of miles away called into the police station where the activists were being held, demanding their release and an explanation for their arrest. This certainly seemed to get to the officers we corresponded with at the police station, who claimed they had been transferred to an undisclosed location in Mineola (Despite being arrested in Hempstead). We found out later that while speaking to these officers, our fellow activists were being held upstairs. This ended up being an overnight affair as about ten supporters showed up in court the next morning to see them face the judge. During the proceedings, the biases, racism, classism, and sexism of the judge became evident. One black woman who had been arrested shoplifting $12 worth of food for her children had her bail set at around $700,000 and an overweight white man accused of beating his wife was released without bail. Each activist was given a $250 bail with the exception of the driver whose car was impounded, whose bail was set at $750. Three were able to be released right away, while delays with paperwork processing resulted in several more hours being wasted as the remaining activists were sent to the main prison in Nassau county. At the end of the day, all were released and the SHUT THEM DOWN tour continued on to New Jersey!

On Wednesday, May 30th the Long Island Animal Defense League is staging a call-in to voice their concerns about Pakistan Airlines (PIA). PIA has been documented shipping beagle puppies from Marshall Farms in upstate NY to animal testing labs in the UK via JFK Airport. These beagles are destined for some of the most notoriously cruel laboratories, including HLS. Each day 500 animals are killed at HLS for mere coffee sweeteners, plastics, pesticides, and caustic chemicals. Employees have been caught punching 4-month old beagle puppies in the face, while others shove household chemicals down the throats of these sentient beings. PIA is complicit in the cruelty and they are being asked sever their ties with HLS. They have a horrific flying safety record, leading to their banishment from much of the EU. Like with so many prior financial supporters of HLS, the campaign will continue until Pakistan Airlines realizes its just not worth exporting cruelty. Rashid Farookee, the General Manager of PIA calmly explained that PIA has ceased to do business with HLS claiming that it was an accidental shipment a couple of years ago that will never happen again. Unfortunately, Mr. Farookee could only give us his word. However, he vowed to put it in writing shortly thereafter, but nothing has been done. Haider Ali-Khan, the Cargo Manager of PIA was not as calm, instead asking why "you people keep contacting me". This was the first inquiry by the ADL, but Mr. Ali-Khan is not familiar with autonomous individuals expressing compassion. Instead, he said that shipping the beagles was a lucrative $1 million business that broke no laws. However, he said PIA stopped shipping beagles due to immense pressure on them to which an activist responded that he had no sympathy for PIA. That said, Mr. Ali-Khan said his company is no longer involved with HLS but would not provide any proof and said it was not his responsibility. He kept complaining about the e-mail inquiries, yet refused to put anything in writing to stop the e-mails and phone calls from coming in. So please, make that call(s) on Wednesday for the beagle puppies: PAKISTAN AIRLINES (212) 643-8733. On that note, our sympathetic PIA insider provided us with Cargo Manager Haider Ali-Khan's info. His office number is (718) 656-4040 x230, while his cell phone number is (917) 836-7179.
