There have been a lot of slasher films that I have reviewed on this site. Murder Loves killers Too’ is one of better slasher films that I’ve seen that I had fun watching.

The film is about a group of teens that go out to a remote cabin in the woods for a wild weekend of partying. (Yes, I know that is the same plot line for most of these films.) Now all alone after her friends are murdered, Auggie, a sweet and innocent teen, must try and stop this psycho, before he does horrible things to her.

Now in its 13th year, the Rhode Island International Film Festival™, (RIIFF) will take place August 4-9, 2009. In its brief life span, the Festival has become a leading juried competition showcase for international independent filmmakers and their work. In 2008, RIIFF screened 289 cinematic works in seven days to large and appreciative crowds. These films were submitted from over 53 countries, and 32 states in the United States.

The Festival presented 58 World Premieres and 41 US/North American Premieres. Following months of adjudication and review, RIIFF films were selected from over 3,000 international submissions. The Festival had 12 sell-outs and is recognized within the industry as the largest festival in New England.

What sets RIIFF apart is that the Festival is one of only five broadly focused, independent festivals in New England accepting works of any type (dramatic, documentary, experimental, animation), on any subject matter, and in any genre. In 2002, RIIFF was notified by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) that it had elected to recognize the Rhode Island International Film Festival as a qualifying festival for the Short Films category for the Annual Academy Awards. With more than 7,000 film festivals worldwide, only 63 have this recognition.

The Rhode Island International Film Festival, takes place in the historic cities of Providence as well as satellite locations throughout the state; including Kingston, Newport, Narragansett, Barrington, Cranston and Westerly. The dynamic nature of Rhode Island offers excellent screening facilities, strong community support, and unlimited growth potential. Visit www.film-festival.org for more details!

MPAA Rating: R
Studio: Overtune Films
Running Time: 91 Mins

“Sunshine Cleaning” is a film that I’ve been looking forward to, since hearing about at Sundance, as it really looked like the dark comedy that yours truly might be interested in. Thankfully, this didn’t turn out be “Gigantic” all over again, and had everything that made sense.

The film is about a single mother (Amy Adams), who is trying to put her son into a private school after being expelled. If that wasn’t any worse, she also has to deal with a sister (Emily Blunt), who can’t hold a job, her eccentric father (Alan Arkin), who’s always coming up with these get rich quick schemes, and having an affair with a detective (Steven Zahn), who she dated in high school. Then one day, she along with her sister starts a bio-hazard crime scene cleaner business, to pay for her son’s tuition. Soon, they begin to have a lot of problems with the business and each other. In order to overcome this, the sisters must overcome their troubled past and their own differences with their lives and each other.

Dark Reel
Director: Josh Eisenstadt
Studio: North American Motion Pictures / Barnholtz Entertainment
Stars: Edward Furlong, Lance Henriksen, Tiffany Shepis
MPAA Rating: R
Running Time: 108 Mins.
Official Website: http://www.darkreel.com/

Going into this film I wanted to see “Dark Reel”, only because one of my favorite scream queen, Tiffany Shepis. Never did I expect that the film would be this good, especially in the acting department, when you have actors like Edward Furlong (Cruel World), Lance Henriksen (Alien Vs. Predator) and Tony Todd (Final Destination) in one film.

“Dark Reel” is loosely based on the rare crime scene footage of an unpublicized murder in 1958 of an actress named Scarlet May. The film is about B movie fan Adam Waltz (Edward Furlong), who wins a walk on role featuring scream queen, Cassie Blue (Tiffany Shepis). Thinking that everything in his life has changed, until he walks on to the set, where there’s a killer on the loose. His role in the film starts to get bigger, as a publicity stunt, when one of the actresses in murdered on the set of the film. Soon people start dropping dead, as Adam begins to realize that someone is murdering the people on the set for Publicity for this new film, as everyone involved is a suspect, in this film that costars Lance Henriksen (Aliens, The Terminator) Mercedes McNab (Buffy, Hatchet) and Tony Tood (Final Destination, Candyman).
