ARCHIVE CONTROLLING CROWDS TOUR 2009

Hi Everyone, I'ts been over three weeks now since the curtain came down on this wonderful tour. To me personally it was like realising a dream. One the best experiences of my life. Being on the road with a band of brothers visiting and performing in places I would never have thought I would ever get to see. It was a long old journey and as it was my first tour ever, it was invaluable to have the experience of the other guys around me.

And my word the fans! I have met so many now and it was truely at times overwhelming. You are all really great people and I cannot wait to get out in january and see you all again.

So, I am currently resting up and am looking forward to having some time off, a chilled christmas and new year followed by another chance to perform in front of you all again. Thanks to everyone who came out to see us.

See you soon.

Brussels/Luxembourg:

 ....

It was a sunny day in London when the Controlling Crowds Tour officially begun Friday night. After having to say a difficult au revoir earlier in the day, I lugged my bags into a taxi and headed down to London Bridge. Mickey Love was there to meet me at a Pub. We finished a crossword while waiting for the bus and band to arrive. The sun faltered into the abyss, the bus eventually arrived and we set sail for Dover/Calais. We arrived on the boat at midnight and were back in our bunks by two-thirty in the morning in +1 hour GMT, France.

 ....

Good morning, Brussels. Heat and sweat were never allowed to settle under the thickness of humidified skin because I didn’t – and wasn’t about to - falter in getting out of my bunk by eight-thirty; beating the suffocating, hot-air-rising-feeling that was beginning to negatively infect my state of being. Out the door I went. More sun (hey, two days in a row), birds tweeting, coffeepot begging to be made-up, fed with ground beans and scorched as punishment for its absence of usefulness while being stowed in my ridiculous-looking rucksack for almost twenty-four hours.

 ....

That’s when life suddenly began. It was everywhere again. Scaffolding and lighting was being lego-ed on the stage. Catering folk were slaving away at lunch. Pastries and bowls of fruit were mingling in the corner. Dressing rooms were filled with towels and there were quarters for showering. It was all there and we, Archive, were again on the road, in another city, at another venue: HALLES DE SCHAERBEEK.

 ....

Throughout the day: Lunch, interviews, sound check, dinner.

 ....

Show:

I personally enjoyed it. It was lovely to be in Brussels again. My guitar was giving me hell, so it was hard to get into it, gain momentum and stay there longer than a few moments before the guitar technicalities would step in and hamper it yet again. But besides all that, blinding crowd, amazing moments and we hope the Belgians had as much fun as we did. It was great to see many of you afterwards and thanks again for your passion, kindness and support.

 ....

Today I write to you from what looks to be Chernobyl, but is actually a newly developed area in some remote area of Luxembourg. There are old steel mills that look like Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory behind us and next door to them are the skeletons of modern buildings being built. Oddly, there is a shopping mall next to the venue, as well, but because of it being Sunday and all, there is not a bolt unhinged from any door, nor a soul about in the confines of the materialistic fairground.  I shouldn’t forget to mention the stunning view from the dressing room: the seamlessly endless stretch of railway tracks and half-built bridges standing alone like a permanently interrupted conversation. If no one turns up to the show tonight, at least we will have the pleasure of playing to machines, steel parts, construction sites, cranes and the quiet desolation of modern society’s endless urge for more and more and more.
