First Solo Show In Denver @ Vain

Now I have had a ton of shows, some good some bad, but this show at Vain could easily be the best show I have ever had, maybe even the best show I had ever been to.

When we showed up to find 3 pieces had sold before the show and to see how the girls were looking I knew it was going to be good, then I saw all the beer, forget it, it was all over.

Tina the owner even put circles in her hair for the show

I was glad to see so many twitter people came out and a few from my building even came out and the place stayed packed right up until the end, I really don’t have much to say about this one but that I had a great time and everyone was great and I hope to do it again next year. Oh and we ended up selling 6 drawings and there’s still 8 weeks left in the show.

Introducing an Ongoing Contest

I know I have been talking about this one for a few weeks now but it’s finally here, free prints. Don’t you want free prints? Of course you do and best thing is they’re free, that’s right you don’t have to buy anything to play, well you do have to do something, you have to sell your soul to Art by NEMO. Easy enough right? All you have to do is help me market. What, you didn’t think you were getting “free” prints did you? No this is my evil plan to get you guys to do my dirty work, grassroots and word of mouth - booo hahahaha!!! No really, it’s pretty simple, every month I am going to post a blog with some crazy thing to do like make a t-shirt with “art by NEMO” or “NEMO” or you can even use my logo, I might even get really crazy and ask you to get a tattoo of one of my drawings (right, like you fine people would do that!) I just don’t know what kind of crazy things I will have for you to do, which brings me to the first contest.

As you can tell I don’t have many ideas for this, although I have been thinking about it for about a month now. So this one is going to be an ongoing contest and you can play now or play later, all you have to do is play. You can play as many times as you want and as often as you want. For the first contest which begins today - all you have to do is make a comment on this post with an idea for a contest or some crazy thing to do, and if I use yours I will blog about you, link to your blog or site (if you want me too, that is) and give you a free print and a hand written letter to prove it’s real. Who knows one day it might be worth millions!

Some of my contest ideas were:
1. To have you guys make a video singing a song about how much you love Art by NEMO in a public place.
2. Doing something like baking a cake with “NEMO” on it and taking it into the office for everyone to eat.
3. Making a sign and hanging it up somewhere outdoors with www.artbynemo.com
4. Putting an Art by Nemo bumper sticker on your car.
5. And of course wearing an Art by NEMO t-shirt somewhere cool.
As you can tell I don’t have many ideas and even less good ones, so that is why I need you.

So help me help you win free prints, post a comment with your contest idea, one idea per comment. If you have 3 ideas I want to see 3 comments. June 1st I will pick the 1st winner and the monthly contests will start. If no one has any ideas I will be forced to use one of mine and if only one person plays they will win, I just might be so happy that one person might get an original! But don’t let it come to that, please play my little game. In addition to winning print each month, each winner from each contest throughout the year will be put into a drawing for an original art piece as a Christmas gift you can keep or give to a loved one. Thank you and remember have some fun, I know I am.

P.S. - If this doesn’t make sense please post your questions here too, and I will answer them so everybody will understand. Thanks!

For Marilyn Monroe

If you follow me on Twitter you might have read some talk about drawing four Marilyn Monroe drawings for The Austin Arthouse 5x7 Show well they are done and I wanted to give you the first view of them. I kind of was thinking of Mr. Warhol for this series. They should be in the mail today. What do you think?

Habitat Tattoo: Body Art For The Home

"It's body art that you won't have to hide from Mom! Nemo's newest collection of pencil-on-vellum works is chock full of classic tattoo graphics. All the favorites make an appearance in this San Antonio artist's unforgettable freehand circles and spirals...curvy swervy pin-up girls, hypnotic hibiscus flowers, sinfully scintillating stars, not-so-coy koi, and the ever present swooping swallow. Nemo's art has all the attitude - none of the pain!"

Bella Creo’s Satellite Space at the Dodging Duck will hold the new show I have been talking about for the last month or so, then it moves over to the main gallery, yay! I am now in the best gallery in Boerne, TX. It only took about 2 years, enjoy the online show. The real show is this Saturday the 11th from 5 to 9. Each one is $130 and if you plan to come out, come early because these pieces are going to go fast.

A Little Fish in a Big Pond

Hello all, I have wanted to write this blog for a few days now but I have been way too busy to do anything. Then I got home and I had to ship a show and now we have to pack. What a month this is going to be. But here it is:

We flew into Denver Sunday (March 30th) and Monday morning we saw some snow (which was my 33rd b-day). I myself have never really seen snow falling from the sky, I did see some last year but it was on the ground in Santa Fe. So that was a nice gift, I wanted to make a snow angel but it was too cold, one of the 1st things I will do when I live there is make one.

Now on to the stuff you want to hear, as we were walking around Monday, yup in the snow and it was cold, we ducked into
Great Western Art Gallery that we just happened to see as we were looking for a place to live. I know “Western Art” but it was much more, it was the kind of place that would carry my art but as you know I didn’t even bring that up. I asked about the scene and got some info about their 1st Friday events and I picked up a cool map that showed all the galleries in town - there are more than 100 of them. So plenty to choose from and I don’t want to get into the first gallery I see without playing the field and since I will be living there for a year or so I don’t want to shoot myself in the foot so soon. We also saw about 9 or 10 apartments and lofts.

Tuesday while Hannah was in a meeting all day I got out and checked out the scene. I talked to a gallery owner that I have been getting e-mails from since we found out we were going to Denver 4 or 5 months ago.
The Plus Gallery just moved into a great new space, I don’t think we would be a good fit, my prices are too low and my work is way to small, plus I don’t think I could make enough art to fill up their room. I would have to work like 10 years to fill it up. They had a lot of big name Colorado artists and I am no big name Colorado artist, yet. I also stopped in a smaller place called Red Shift Framing was a nice little frame shop that was more my speed. It had been in business for 20 years. I talked to a little girl that worked there, I think her name was Gigi, sorry if I got that wrong.

Then lunch with Hannah and then back to walking around, my feet were hurting by this time. I did talk to David at
Gallery 1261 for about an hour or so and cant wait to go to a few art shows there. This was another place that didn’t seem like a good place for me but the dude was cool and once we move I must have him and his girlfriend over for dinner. Then I walked over to the Walker Fine Art and met Bobbi Walker, a really nice lady who seemed a little busy and very helpful at the same time. From all the places I saw this one was a sure fit so I might have to keep an eye on that one, plus she said once I just settled in to come back and check in with her and she might have some contacts for me. Who knows, but I will be sure to go back.

Wednesday I did nothing because my feet hurt and Hannah was in meetings all day. Plus the hotel we were in got a busted pipe and we ended up moving to 3 hotels 4 times……. That’s all I have to say about that…..

Thursday, Hannah had no meeting and we checked out another 10 or so places, and man, were there some good ones. Friday we walked to all the places or took the bus and figured we might was well pick the place that was closest to Hannah’s work so we can meet for lunch everyday. So
Glenarm Place was the winner, its only 2 blocks away. This has to be about the fanciest place I ever been to; we are on the 21st floor and have one hell of a view of the mountains. So what if I don’t have a store front or gallery, I don’t have that now and I am doing just fine. And no you can’t come stay with us unless you’re buying all the beer and room service I can take. So welcome home Hannah and Nemo, welcome home.

What About Your Voice?

I talk a lot about the voice and how your style can help you get ahead of the pack. I preach about how the only real way you can stand out from the crowd is to stand out from the crowd, but first you need to find out what the crowd is doing, what is it that most people are doing and then when you find that step out side of it and do something all your own.

As I was starting my art career I had no idea what people were making. I was just having fun, just doing what ever I wanted to do. I also had a full time job and didn’t worry about having to pay rent or buy groceries. I painted after work and on the weekends. I didn’t know what I was doing and didn’t know anything about art history, so I took a class. Whenever someone told me my work looked like so and so’s I looked them up I read everything I could find on them and I also stopped making that kind of stuff if it looked too much like it. I was getting well known with a style that looked like Van Gogh and Pollock had a love child. I knew it too, but once I read it in a local paper it was over and I never looked back. I don’t want you to drop what you’re doing if you are having fun and don’t plan on becoming a “Pro Artist”. But for those of you out there who read my blog and want to be a full time artist and want to travel the world having shows and make way more money then you can spend, you need to drop those styles and do something else. You can’t be a famous copy cat, unless maybe you are the best copy cat, but that’s harder than becoming an artist.

I have been working on my, as a history teacher put it “Graphique Couture”, for a few years now and every time someone says it looks like so and so, and its always the same people
Erte and Klimt I can see how someone would think that but it’s not close enough to stop me. I have a feeling I might be the only one out there making art that looks like mine, but if you have seen something close to it send me a link.

So how do you find and perfect your voice? If you are one of those people who paints and draws and sculpts and writes plays and makes jewelry and flies kites and races dirt bikes and in your free time work a full time job, you might want to drop a few things. If you paint with watercolor, acrylics, oils, and draw with pencils, pens and charcoals, then you sculpt with wood, news paper, wire and what ever else you can come up with all at the same time you might have to drop a few things.

I know a lot of artists that really want to live off their art but that is holding them back. Every time I see them they are talking about some new thing they are working on and how this is the style they are going to make it with and every time I go to their studios or see their work at a show or some place it’s always completely different from the last stuff I saw from them. It confuses me and I can bet that it really throws people off who don’t look at art all day and that confusion will hurt your sales and your ability to become an art star. Sad thing is that most of these artists are really good they just lack focus. They think that saying they are a jack of all trades will help sell art, it doesn’t.

Are you one of these artists? Is there a good reason you are jumping styles like that? Are you just getting bored with it? Is there anyway you can just work on one style? Do you have a style that is unique and original? Is there one style you have come up with that you are most proud of and every one seems to love? How often do you change your mind about what it is you want to be making? Why do you get bored with you art? Please fill me in and maybe we can come up with a way to focus, thank you.

Now I am not one to down the world of anyone who wants to change anything but I'm not really one who helps out or anything ether. I do buy Windtricity and I do try to recycle as much as I can but nothing too big I just go with the flow.

I got a chance to see a preview of a movie called
Fuel yesterday. I gotta tell you it opened my eyes to a lot of things. It won the 2008 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for Best Documentary. It opens here in San Antonio tomorrow and I hope a lot of people go out and see this movie.

Josh Tickell is an amazing guy and stands for something most of us don't even think about, so if you get a chance see this film and take your kids with you, It will open your eyes, it opened mine.

He also drives around the US in the
Veggie Van

He's on
myspace too so check it out and get the word out. Thank you so much.

Friday we got up early and hit the road to College Station for the Fountain Art Invitational Art Show. We only sold two originals but we sold a lot of magnets so it kind of made up for it. We had a few people come out and remembered seeing my work last time and a few collectors stopped by to see how I was doing. Again, we made a lot of new friends and everyone seemed to be really amazed by my freehand drawn circles. I even heard twice that we had the best art there but you didn't hear that from me, all the art there was great, wink wink. We were there from 11 to 11 and on our feet most of the time, then we packed up and drove into the moon set. We got home at about 2am and were dead tried, we managed to sleep in a bit, but you know us, on to the next show which is on the 15th.

November 15th is the start of my commission drive, if you want a commission you need to get on the list as fast as you can, especially if you want it by Christmas.

Now for a plug of the place we were stationed in front of at the show:

If you are near College Station or going to be there stop by
Blue Baker, oh man is their bread is to die for. We brought some home and had it with coffee this morning and it was the best. I e-mailed them and told them we needed one in San Antonio. Tell them "the famous NEMO sent you" I don't know if they would care but I tried to talk to all of them and we were in and out of their place all day. If you paint your whole body blue and wear all blue you get like a sandwich free or something, check em out.

Today we have another koi fish for you, hope you like it and remember with the holidays coming up it might be a good idea to stock up on my eBay drawings for the whole family, thanks.

The show at Casa Linda was great, we only sold 3 drawings, but former San Antonio mayor, Judge Nelson W. Wolff came out early and picked himself up a cute little hummingbird that I felt was one the best in the show. I only mention this because he is probably the only person who has bought a piece of art from me who is on wikipedia. I didn't sell any of the cats and dogs that I have been blogging about so if you want one comment about them or they will be in many of the other shows we have planned.

I ate lots of watermelon and had a few beers, but all the food was good and the music was perfect, a classical guitar player with good taste (he liked my art) played as the 70 or 80 people casually made bids on everything from a Wine Refrigerator to a basketball signed by all the Spurs. A few "NEMO" fans came out and showed their love, which I am greatful to have. The
Animal Defense League was out and 8 cute little animals got adopted, thanks for "Owning Up SA".

Ok on to today's eBay listing - here is a butterfly with a blue background. It could be flying at night but I was told by 6 old years that butterflies don't fly at night so it must be a moth. I have not googled it or anything but I take their word for it. I mean, I grew up thinking Lemmings ran off cliffs. Well enjoy this drawing day or night!

One more thing, I am planning on posting a lot of eBay drawings this week and to start marketing them like crazy so if you can help out in anyway e-mail everyone you know about my drawings and bid high. Thank You.
