Leonardo da Vinci: Drawings from the Bilblioteca Reale in Turin

This exhibition provides a rare glimpse into the mind of the greatest draftsman of all time, whose designs still fascinate and challenge us today. Often called "the universal genius," Leonardo is recognized for his restless, inventive mind, and the drawings in Turin illustrate in microcosm the extensive range of his interests.

The works encompass one of Leonardo's most celebrated notebooks, the Codex on the Flight of Birds, and 11 important drawings taht have never before traveled as a group nor in their entirety been made available outside of Italy.

August 24, Theme: VULCANALIA!

Musical artist: Patterson Hood, www.myspace.com/pattersonhood

This will be an Art on the Rocks you don't want to miss! The annual ancient Roman Vulcanalia festival was held on August 23 in honour of the Roman god Vulcan. Fish were sacrificed on festival bonfires lit in honour of the god. Vulcan was the god of fire, tools, and smithing, so it also was customary to make crafts by candlelight in his honour. Ironically, Mount Vesuvius erupted the day after the citizens of Pompeii celebrated Vulcanalia in 79 AD. Too few fish?

Here's the fun part...
Celebrate the holiday properly. Wear a toga! If you do, you'll be placed in a drawing for a brand new red Vespa donated by Bogart's Motor Sports.

Toga! Toga!

Get ready to celebrate Vulcanalia on August 24 at Art on the Rocks by wearing a toga. Here is an easy how-to guide for making your own.

- Buy five yards of cloth. (Cloth works better, plus it's usually less expensive than a
sheet. And, you get to choose from lots more colors and fabric designs.)

- Take the width and fold it in half.

- Pin one of the sheet at your waist and wrap around 1.5 times

- Pin again and throw the remainder of cloth over shoulder to drape.

- Bring fabric back to the waste and tie the two loose ends or pin in place.

- Accessorize with sandals, a rope belt, gold jewelry, fake swords and laurels (Laurels
are the leaves around your head. Make a circle with a coat hanger and glue fake-or
real-leaves to it.)
