Hi guys:

On Saturday, April 25th, I’m teaming up with Kevin Rose (http://twitter.com/kevinrose) to support World Malaria Day.  On World Malaria Day, we plan to rally the Twitter community to Tweet in support of Malaria prevention and treatment, by asking our followers to go to the Malaria No More (http://www.malarianomore.org/) Web site to learn about how to help end malaria deaths in Africa.

Supporting World Malaria Day on Twitter is designed to be very simple.  Our goal is to secure participation from the Twitter community, to Tweet the following message on Saturday, April 25, 2009:

Every 30 seconds a child dies from Malaria. Nets save lives. Support World Malaria Day = https://give.malarianomore.org/SSLPage.aspx?pid=356&srcid=246 RT

By way of background, Malaria No More is determined to end malaria deaths in Africa.  Malaria No More uses breakthrough communications, global advocacy and smart investments to advance the goals of providing universal access to malaria interventions by the end of 2010 and ending deaths by 2015.  Every 30 seconds – the time it takes to send and receive a Tweet – a child dies from malaria, but a simple mosquito net can save lives.

Please join us on April 25th in raising awareness of malaria prevention by Tweeting on Twitter in support of World Malaria Day.

Today I celebrate the life and mourn the lost of one of our greatest story tellers. Paul Harvey enriched my life through his gifted voice and ability to deliver a tale with the most unsuspecting ending I'd ever heard. He made me want to buy a Bose wave radio a trempropedic mattress and anything else he was asked to move to support his story telling platform. He made the countless hours of driving back and forth the my grandparents house on sunday morning bearable. I would sit in the back seat of the car choking on my parents cigarette smoke hanging on to his every last word. He had an personal interest to every story but there was always a wink as if he himself didn't know the ending. Occasionally he would hint a little smile. It was like he was watching your reaction and knew that he had you hooked. I always felt like he was the smartest wittiest person in the car. He would take you on a roller coaster of peaks and valleys as we drove it felt like he had choreographed it to the road we traveled. And in the end we were allowed to find out "the rest of the story" which we never saw coming. Thank you Paul for teaching me how to tell a story. ak

here are some new facts about modern day slavery provided by my friend Angel Santos. The real question is; what can we do? How can we help? Where is the quantifiable solution? Well the first thing that we need to do is let people know that there is a problem and it's BIG. ak

UN Says Human Trafficking Appears To Be Worsening

(RFE/RL) -- In a new report, the United Nations says human trafficking for the sex trade or forced labor market appears to be getting worse, not better, because many countries aren't paying attention to it.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) surveyed 155 countries for its report on modern-day slavery, but didn't say how many people it believes are victims of human trafficking. Estimates range from 800,000 new victims each year, according to the U.S. State Department, to 2.5 million, according to the International Labor Organization.

UNODC chief Antonio Maria Costa told a news conference at UN headquarters in New York that 40 percent of the countries where the problem exists have not convicted one person of trafficking charges.

Even when there are convictions, Costa said, they're not as plentiful as convictions for crimes involving far fewer victims. In these countries, he said, authorities either ignore the problem or don't have the resources to fight trafficking -- or both.

"According to the statistics, about 80 percent of these crimes are concentrated on sexual exploitation," Costa said. "But I warn you. This may be an optical illusion in the sense that it is the most commonly reported [crime], it is the most commonly visible [crime], and it is especially visible in rich countries -- Europe, if you wish, [and] North America."

Overall, the report said, 20 percent of those forced into the sex trade are under 18 years of age. But in Southeast Asia and parts of Africa, it said, minors make up the majority of sex slaves.

But enslaved children aren't limited to the sex trade, according to the report. Because their hands are small, it says, they're exploited as cheap labor -- to untangle fishing nets, pick delicate berries, or do intricate sewing.

Seventy-nine percent of slavery is for sex, according to the UNODC, while about 18 percent is for forced labor, forced marriages, or forced organ donation. And although the victims of sex trafficking are usually women and girls, those in charge of the trafficking are women, too.

"In this specific case, the specific case of human trafficking, we see a very large presence of women. In some Eastern European countries, some former [Soviet Union] countries, Central Asian countries, even 60, 70, 80 [percent] -- 83 percent in one case -- of the perpetrators are women," Costa said. "In some of the African countries, the majority of the perpetrators in this business unfortunately are women."

Border Security Not A Factor

Fighting human trafficking might be easier if it were an enterprise that always involved crossing borders. After all, Costa said, well-designed border security might intercept a significant percentage of the victims.

But that isn't the case.

"It is not only trafficking from Southeast Asia into other parts of Asia or into Western Europe, it's not only from Latin America to North America -- these are the kind of flows which you probably have in mind," Costa said. "There is a lot of exploitation within countries, large countries like the United States, large countries like some of the African countries, but also in smaller countries."

There is some good news in the UNODC report.

In 2004, the UN enacted a special protocol to fight human trafficking. Since then, it said, 63 percent of the 155 countries surveyed have enacted laws against the practice.

But there was little else in the report to inspire much optimism. In fact, Costa said, the worldwide economic crisis is driving even more illicit business to the traffickers, particularly for cheap labor.

"The budget situation, the bottom line of so many enterprises, including the multinationals, who have been known in the past to use forced labor, cheap labor, child labor, in their supply chain -- their budget, their financial situation, their financial predicament being so much more difficult than it was in the past -- may very well induce them to use more than in the past cheap sources of labor," Costa said. "Namely, the ones stemming from modern slavery."

I love Twitter. I use Twitter to communicate to my friends, my co-workers, my family and – more recently – to the world. I Twitter as self expression, as entertainment, and to connect directly to people who are interested in my point of view. It is surprising to me how my Twitter feed is being picked up by mainstream media outlets, and how my commentary on life is being rehashed and interpreted. For the most part, the mainstream media has gotten it right and interpreted my Twitters with accuracy.
Today, however, some of the coverage surrounding my Twitters about Joaquin Phoenix is blatantly inaccurate and taken completely out of context. The value of this utility is that it’s a conversation. And unfortunately the tabloid media is only reporting on one side of the conversation as they are not privy to the @reply’s that are being fed directly to me by the twitter community. I would be as if someone was listening in on one side of a phone call and reporting on it. I believe that this fundamental lack of understanding of this utility and the web in general by mainstream tabloid news sources is the very reason why they will struggling to maintain an audience on the web. The web is not a one to many conversation its a many to many interaction. My twitter feed is not a news source it is merely a thread in a public conversation. My statements are public observations and impressions not angles or editorial slants to be filtered into an ancient communication factory.

Despite the lack of accurate attribution, I don’t plan on stopping my open communication on Twitter. However, I am asking for consideration in understanding that my Twitter feed does not exist as a news source for tabloid media – and if tabloid reporters pull content from @aplusk, I would like for my Twitters to be pulled directly and reported accurately.

Props to Joaquin Phoenix for his incredible artistry and brilliance.

140 characters works for some things. Sometimes you need more space. I would like to address the spin factories around the world. Over the last week my posts on twitter have received a lot of attention. I have not begged or pulled or asked for any of it. Let me set a few facts straight.

1) I do not think that going off on my neighbor was a horribly offensive thing to do. I have been woken up every morning for the last four months by hammering and construction on a structure that is very close to our property line after being told the land was being purchased to build a park. Yes, there may have been a more diplomatic way to do it and maybe broadcasting it for the net wasn't the wisest choice. My father is a contractor my step father is a contractor. I grew up hiking shingles to the roof of houses and driving nails at 7 am for a living. I have absolute compassion and understanding for the workers. I do however have a job that sometimes forces me to work into the night (sometimes the movie business requires that) and occasionally I like to sleep past 7 am. Yes I live a very fortunate life and for that I am very greatful, I do however work for a living. I have a family that I support and a company that I run daily. And I cherish the 4 to 6 hours that I sleep a day.
2) I didn't "chuck beverages" at the construction workers. They were very happy to see us and laughing at the whole ordeal. I asked them if they wanted something to drink and they said yes. I thought that it would be a nice gesture. I am sorry if some found this offensive. But I know that the workers loved it.
3) I don't feel that my distain for the unwarranted attack on my step daughters by a blogger I will not name is out of line at all.
4) I don't smoke marijuana and any statement to the contrary is a lie. I simply feel that Michael Phelps is entitled to his privacy. The kid made a mistake (he is only human) and anyone who has been in the public eye knows the magnification of minor missteps can be blown way out of proportion. Yes he is a role model and a great one at that. But I'm sure that in his lapse of judgment he wasn't thinking, "boy I hope the whole world can see this so that kids everywhere can copy me." And truth be told, if they went out and trained and worked as hard as he has to reach the great heights of success in their careers I wouldn't hammer them about a slip up either. And in kind I would like to retract any negative statement that I made about the kid who published the pic. I'm sure he/she wasn't in a sober head space while taking it or publishing it for that matter (you are the company you keep). I leave perfection to the creator of this great universe and wouldn't assume that duty on any human being.
5) I find it exceedingly disappointing that the press coverage of my wife and my blog posts have not included the philanthropic pursuits that we have adopted and encourage. Our intention in becoming more active on the web has been with the effort to connect to the community in an effort to create a greater bond with the amazing fans that we have adopted over several years. We are sharing our lives our thought our ideas and yes our faults with the hope of using connectivity and oneness to build a greater unity and take down the walls that divide us. We have dedicated ourselves to building a coalition to abolish 21st century slavery and are smart enough to know that we can't do it alone. But truth be told we are having fun connecting with people and if we are to be defamed for doing so, so be it. We aren't publishing news. We are sharing with a community of people that are sharing back with us. So I only ask that you don't take our conversation out of context and please stop printing half truths in the media so as to drive up your user consumption and sell more ads on the content that you claim to be news.

Ps. US weekly my 15 minutes of fame has lasted 10 years I think we can quit using that line now.

Yesterday I posted a question on my twitter account @aplusk, asking if anyone had information on assassin's. I'm playing a character in my new film that requires in depth knowledge about government hired hit men. Shortly after posting the question I received a rush of incoming @replies leading me to various outlet. They were mostly insights into the history of ninjas and wiki sources that defined the word assassin a derivative of a word Hashish. Which must have been subsequently used for a substance that in the words of my friend Tommy Chong is "killer man!". But my paranoia is not coming from any ingestion of substance but rather the fall out and editorial nature of what followed. As I dug through the responses there was one link in particular that caught my attention. Someone posted a tread that they believed to be a CIA doctrine on assassination. http://www.whale.to/b/szy12.html I immediately grabbed the link as I felt that it would be valuable to my studies. I however didn't have time to check it out an dumped it in a file to look at later assuming that when I got home the link would still be cashed in my twitter account where I could read it later. However last night when I arrived home the link along with several others had been pulled from my twitter feed. I searched for a good hour and couldn't find it or the other missing links. Call me paranoid (as it may be a result of the roll I am preparing for) but I don't like feeling like we are being edited. I feel like I'm in The Game right now and it may very well be being run by Evan Williams. LOL If this blog post disappears I'm moving back to Iowa throwing away my cell and my computer and hiding under a rock. ak

Current mood:  inspired
I had the great fortune of attending the inauguration today with my wife. For the most part it was really breath taking. To stand in the middle of such an enormous mass cheering for the potential of the future captured me. I was less impressed by the boo's as the republican representative took the stage. I found it to be offensive and separating. I was also appauled by the people who didn't stand when former President, then President G W Bush appeared. I urged the people around me to rise. Regardless of whether or not you agree with, or like the man, he at that time was still our president and he gave 8 years of his life to serve you. The cook might not be making what you like but be greatful for the fact that he's serving you at all. How many people can say that they've dedicated 8 years of their life to the greater good of man kind, made the toughest decisions known to man. Even if you don't by any of that at least the guy made you laugh. Part of being an American is standing by the process and respecting our commander. Don't be an Obama patriot, be a patriot. Let bipartisanship die and represent this country united! Enough about that. As I watched our new president take his oath and pledge his service to this country I had chills running through my body. I'm nearly positive they weren't cold chills from how freaking freezing it was but warm chills of recognition that I was witness to a moment of light revealing itself. A moment that represented to me the passing of a torch. Not from one president to the next but from one president to the people. This will mark the day when we, through the beauty of the democratic process, seized control of our country. However this comes at a price. Now we have to be responsible. We must be accountable for our country, our happiness, and each other. We all must do our part and leave no one behind. Below is the link to an article that I wrote for the huffington post. I am inspired by the opportunity at our finger tips and I hope you feel the same. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ashton-kutcher/creating-a-nation-of-phil_b _158773.html
