Indigenous  Resistance & Asian Dub Foundation
 ATENCO: This Land Is Not For Sale / Esta Tierra No Estå En Venta

   As  you might know  from earlier blogs when we visited Mexico earlier this year we hooked up with various activists concerned with the situation in Atenco ,a town in Mexico state To recap: Basically Atenco is a classic indigenous land rights struggle ;the govt wants to build an airport and eject the people- the people fight back and win.Govt tries again this time killing,raping and imprisoning wildly .A 14 year old boy is shot and 13 people are imprisoned  being given 100 year sentences in some cases.The media coverage is massively biassed.You can watch an excellent documentary on Atenco entitled "Breaking the Siege"; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpazIBrlL5c&feature=related .
        Our connection with   Indigenous Resistance  goes back to the track "19 Rebellions"  on our "Enemy of the Enemy" album where they provided us with the recorded text featuring information about the Brazillian prison uprisings of 2001.They're a world wide  collective that collects soundbites from the frontline of indigenous peoples' struggles and then soundtracks them for the world.Check the links below for more info on IR.Here's their press release  for our collaboration;

 "For some time, IR had been aware of the siege of Atenco and had been following the news through its direct and underground channels. When
Asian Dub Foundation contacted us about working on a collaboration around this issue, it made perfect sense to us. Land rights are the center of many indigenous struggles and IR has done tracks & grafitti projects related to this matter.

IR ha venido siguiendo el caso de Atenco durante algun tiempo y cuando ellos entablaron contacto con nosotros para hacer una colaboración en torno a esta cuestión para nosotros tuvo un gran sentido.

This new collaboration was created through the internet with musical mixes, speech fragments, and ideas flying back and forward in the digital domain. IR's network of dubversive members working in shadows across the Americas from
Peru to Colombia, made their contributions by editing, transcribing, translating and recordings. These were relayed via the net to ADF in the UK.

Hi Everyone

Our gig in Hay-On-Wye was a real pleasant surprise being as it was absolutely rammed with a seriously enthusiastic audience that we haven't seen in Britain for a while.Big up to all those who attended and to the organisers,it was a fascinating day.We were happy to do the anti-BNP gigs round the UK but of course we are deeply disappointed that those people managed to get 2 MEP's despite only marginally increasing their vote.We must keep up the fight against them any way we can.We've just come back from Malaga where we had a STORMING show-every gig in Spain seems to be that way at the moment.What made it extra special was that it supported the struggle for union recognition for a group of women workers in Guatemala.We spoke at length to their representative,a very brave woman called Irma,who has been threatened with death by Guatemalan paramilitaries if she pursues her cause.We hope that we may do a track for the cause in the near future.
We'd like to announce the release of Jahcoozi's remix of "Burning Fence" on a new compilation here's some details;

Asian Dub Foundation's "Burning Fence (Jahcoozi Remix)" to be released on Revolution Rising: ethnotechno.com vol.1

Release date: June 22nd on High Chai Recordings

Asian Dub Foundation announce BEATIN’ BACK THE BNP TOUR plus new video of dubstep banger, ‘Bride of Punkara’ taken from latest album PUNKARA

All Ticket Details: www.lovemusichateracism.com

Asian Dub Foundation are about to embark on the BEATIN’ BACK THE BNP tour,  their first in the UK for many years partly in response to the real possibility that a member of the British National Party may win a seat in the European Parliament. In their words:

“This cannot be allowed to happen otherwise the forces of racism and intolerance will be given a huge boost in Britain, plus also an international platform with accompanying financial resources.”

ADF have always been at the forefront of controversy often compared as the modern day equivalent of bands like the Sex Pistols or The Clash. The live performances are still as thrilling as they were when they were famously dubbed the best live band in the world by Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie

Keeping the live experience as exhilarating as possible is key to the dynamimism of a band who have toured as extensively as ADF. Last summer ADF headlined Fuji Rocks in Japan and towards the end of last year the band completed a 40 date world tour  in support of their album PUNKARA. The constant touring does not dampen their enthusiasm. Chandrasonic of ADF explains “The shows planned will be fast, furious and very lively and they’ll be a solid mix of new and old tracks.”

Asian Dub-step Foundation?

ADF, with help from Nathan "Flutebox" Lee, have ventured into dub step for the first time on their new single ‘Bride of Punkara’. The song itself wouldn’t sound out of place on a Skream or Burial album but it still has the feel of a ADF track, so much so that you can’t believe they haven’t diverged into dub step before. The accompanying video fits the mood of the track perfectly, all filmed by the band themselves on their tour bus during their last tour.

NEW RELEASES

Asian Dub Foundation released four re-mastered classic albums on April 27th, coinciding with their live public performance at London’s Trafalgar Square on the first May Bank Holiday as part of the Strangers Into Citizens Rally.

    Tank R.A.F.I

    Community Music Enemy of the Enemy

Included in the re-issue collection is the original version of RAFI’s Revenge entitled R.A.F.I. which has never had an official UK Release. Many songs featured on R.A.F.I were re-recorded for RAFI’s Revenge which was subsequently nominated for a Mercury Music Prize in 1998.

Enemy of the Enemy is a stone cold classic and includes the lyrically poignant ‘Fortress Europe’ asking questions about the UK government’s policy towards asylum seekers. This track has had massive success featuring on CSI New York and Playstation game, Need for Speed, Underground.

Community Music (2000) was awarded 10/10 in NME Magazine and reached number 20 in the album charts. This version sees a newly designed cover from it’s original release which sold 40,000 copies in 2000. Tank features Ghetto Priest from ON U Sound system and was originally released in 2005.

All digitally re-mastered by Kevin Metcalfe (U2, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Lee Perry, The Police)

ADF were Nominated for 2009 UK Asian Music Awards as Best Alternative Act alongside Nitin Sawnhey.

 Asian Dub Foundation were one of the pioneers in music politicisation and have always been regarded as major force on the British electronic and rock scenes

 Latest album Punkara was released in October 2008 followed by a 40 date tour around the world visiting Russia, Mexico, Colombia, and all of Europe.

After our disappointment in Rome I'm happy to say that the Strangers into Citizens event in Trafalgar Square was a great success.Strangers into citizens is an orgnisation that presses for illegal immigrants to gain full British  citizenship.Our first performance coincided with a massive march  into Trafalgar square by  various nationalities demanding equal rights and ended up with a couple of Chinese lions joining us onstage  for Fortress Europe in front of a packed Trafalgar square.Our set was very short but the vibe was great.When we came on for the second time much later the rally had petered out somewhat but all in all it was a great day and very well orgainised with some interesting speakers from groups of people who don't normally get a chance to be heard.A hearty big up to the organisers!

Current mood:  blustery

    Our mayday weekend didn't get off  to a good start.We were were due to play Rome's biggest one day festival the Primo Maggio,which is a traditional festival of the left.We were promised national television coverage and a live  audience of 100's of 1,000's of people.Through absolutely hopeless stage management our stage time was moved back past the curfew so far that we knew we weren't going to get on in time for the TV.Then came the news  that we weren't going to play at all because the police were forcing the festival to close.Italy is generally not the best place to play for bands because of famously bad organisational skill but never have we not been able to play a show because of that ,especially one as important as this.

             But even more disappointingly for us there were some grim ironies to contend with.If this is the foremost festival for the left in italy then it is scarily ironic that 99% of the groups appearing  were geriatric,unimaginative purveyors  of plodding early 70's rock and the only non-white,vaguely 21st century band- us -was not allowed to play.I find it difficult to avoid the the symbolism here especially now that Rome has an openly far-right mayor.The Primo Maggio was  backward-looking and poorly  organised-and ,so it seems,is the Itallian left.I'm not surprised  that a crook like Berlusconi and his crypto-fascist allies are running the country  if this is the best they can do.

                The organisers were apologetic  and have promised us that we can play  at a proper slot  next year as compensation .I hope they make good on their promise and we will be happy to give it another go.But more importantly the Italian left needs to get its shit together  and start having some new ideas because at the moment it looks powerless to stop what could amount to a far-right takeover.

I'm happy to report that our trip to Mexico was probably our best since Brazil in 2001.Unlike in Colombia we were able to reach out to both a community project and a militant land rights campaign.Funnily enough,the Hilary Clinton/drugs visit that was all over the international press didn't impinge on our trip at all.Rather it was the little Mexico State town of Atenco that became our main focus.
   Basically Atenco is a classic indigenous land rights struggle ;the govt wants to build an airport and eject the people- the people fight back and win.Govt tries again this time killing,raping and imprisoning wildly .A 14 year old boy is shot and 13 people are imprisoned  being given 100 year sentences in some cases.The media coverage is massively biassed.You can watch an excellent documentary on Atenco entitled "Breaking the Siege"; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpazIBrlL5c&feature=related
    Being Mexico there is of course a very powerful and inspiring grass roots campaign against these injustices,the main organisations being Libertad Y Justica para Atenco and the
People's Front for the Defense of the Land(FPDT).Both are affiliated to the EZLN's(otherwise known as the Zapatistas) "Other Campaign" which aims to unite all autonomous resistance in the country.

    Anyway we had a press conference and discussed Atenco and it was reported in many publications.At our first gig I said a lot on stage and again this was reported widely.Then
it turned out that Manu Chao was also in Mexico and HE had been talking about Atenco.I'm not sure what exactly happened ,but he cancelled his show and was reported to be "under investigation"by the govt (which was later denied).In Mexico there is a law that prohibits "foreigners " from getting involved in "politics" -whatever that means!
    Consequently a warning came from the  organisers of  our upcoming gig at the Zocalo(the central square in Mexico City);don't mention Atenco or the Zapatistas otherwise you may find your visas being investigated and your gear impounded at the airport.Uh-oh.I personally wouldn't mind those particular consequences myself but I didn't really have the right to risk others' safety.
    But in the end it was easy,because I didn't need to mention anything by name.When I said "I first heard of the Zocalo in 1994" they all knew I was referring to the EZLN's historic million-strong march into thecity.And when I dedicated "Fortress Europe " to
all those  indigenous peoples who have been  killed and imprisoned fighting for their land rights,adding "you know who I mean...and so does Manu Chao" I think they got it.
After the gig we were very honoured to find a delegation from the FPTD waiting for us,including a woman whose husband was one of the 13 imprisoned.They thanked us for what we had been saying  made a special presentation to us of their neckscarfs which have a picture of Zapata on them and a slogan saying their land is not for sale.Receiving the scarf,they said, "was not a gift but a responsibility".I hope we can live up to this.Perhaps even more than in Brazil artists and musicians are considered at the vanguard of the struggle.Looking at Diego Rivera's murals and listening to the brave people from the FPTD I grasped this in a way perhaps I hadn't before.To me saying stuff on stage is not THAT much of a big deal;to hear  these people who had taken on the might of the Mexican special forces armed with nothing but machetes tell me that it IS a big deal was life-affirming to say the least.
We also paid a visit to El Faro de Oriente,a arts project that serves the barrios on the edge of town which was extremely colourful and inspiring.On top of that we saw the pyramids at Teochuichan,checked out the wrestling and watched Mexico dispatch Costa Rica 2-0.What a trip!!
  Russia turned up some good stuff too.In St.Petersburg we were introduced to Baimurat,a Tajik building worker who'd just had his teeth knocked out by a bunch of skinheads.He asked us if he could play before us and proceeded to sing a series of Bollywood clasics where he sang all the parts(male,female,guitar)accompanting himself on bucket.He received a rapturous reception and later joined us a for a jam which was phenomenal.You can see him on youtube;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDI4U02t1KM&feature=related

While it was all good fun you should know thatin a largely racist/xenophobic country like Russia  it was quite a big deal for a poor Tadjik immigrant to get up before a Russian audience, especially with an "international"act.I was sent some blogs and one described it as the "best antifascist gig for years" which appears to me to be a bit of an overstatement but I guess everything is relative...
