Still going to shows but slacking on the blog. Forgot to make a resolution to post more often and now that moment has passed. Hmmm. Well, it's a dreary gray day, sprinkling off and on, and the neighbor dogs have taken over the floor of our office (their people are gone to Mammoth). Our cats are conked out on the bed. I should be filing papers and sorting receipts, but I'm liking listening to our favorite local (and not-so-local) bands' songs via iTunes and sorting through videos I need to upload to YouTube. Speaking of which, I've put up a video of Death To Anders' Ghost Rock from last night's show at The American Legion Post 206 in Highland Park. This band has really developed their sound and whether their show is lightly attended (recent show at Alex's Bar, or full of vocal fans (last night), they deliver a satisfying blast of frenzy and shoe-gaze. Check 'em out by clicking the pic:

Okay, instead of falling further behind and then never posting a blog about these shows, I'm throwing them all together in one blog at the suggestion of my better half :-) After a dearth of live music for an entire month (gak!) we finally got it together starting last Wednesday at The Maui Sugar Mill Saloon where we caught Adam Marsland Chaos Band on their first show back in town. After 50 dates across the country this summer (sometimes just Adam solo, acoustic, sometimes with T on bass and recruited guest musicians along the way) the full band reunited for an enthusiastic evening chock full of songs. If you want some good reading about what it's like to tour across the country, check out the excellent tour diary @ adammarsland.com. Click the pic for Big Big Yeah: We then started this week out right on Monday by going to The Silverlake Lounge to see The New Fidelity. We haven't managed to catch the band in awhile and their sound seems to be heading in a slightly more R 'n' B direction. Two thumbs up! Check out I'm Not The One: Thursday night was a triple play at Mr. T's Bowl in Highland Park. The initial impetus to get us out to the show was Family Tree Analog, a post-punk/jazz quartet (ha ha, made that up) from Los Angeles that sings about health care and other unusual topics. Here's Hospital: Unexpectedly starting out the night when the opening band's van broke down outside of L.A. (they were coming from Portland), was Isabellas, an energetic alt/rock trio from Oakland with clever lyrics and lots of backup singing from the drummer. We liked them quite a bit. Here's Uh Oh: They were followed by the local two-piece guitar/drums rhythmic onslaught, Cinder Cone. Check out Donatello Chinn:

This is a bummer. Tonight we drove down to The Echo to see Death To Anders. They're having a residency there this month and we missed them last week as we were out of town. We were looking forward to seeing them and picking up their new EP, Enigmatic Market, as well as their previous CD, Fictitious Business, which inexplicably, we don't already have. However, the doorman, after swiping our licenses asked about the camera bags we were carrying. Yeah, so? We've always brought cameras to The Echo. We taken pics and videos of tons of bands. We've posted them on this MySpace page, the bands' MySpace pages, sometimes on the clubs' MySpace pages, and on Avebury's YouTube page, both to document the local music scene and to share it with those who don't live here. The videos at our YouTube page have been viewed over 235,000 times. We have subscribers all over the world and we get comments from people who are thrilled to be able to see the bands that will never come to their hometown. How is this hurting a club? How is this hurting the bands? It's really a disturbing trend seeing clubs disallow cameras and video cameras. And I'm talking small clubs! Not a corporate House of Blues-type club that we expect to have control issues. No, we're talking about little clubs, most of which don't pay the local bands that fill their rooms every night. Shouldn't they be happy to have people posting pics and videos and talking about what a good time was had at their clubs? We turned around and went home.

Way back in the summer (where did that go?!), we went to a show at The Fake Gallery to see The Clutter Family. Factoid: Guitar player, co-lead singer/songwriter Jim Earl played guitar in The Direct Hits back in the day. The Direct Hits were an early incarnation of Action Now, Avebury Records' first CD release. We hadn't seen Jim in years and were eager to see what he was up to so we headed over to Melrose Avenue to check out his band. After a couple of stand up opening acts--which was pretty entertaining as we never go out to see comedy-- The Clutter Family took the stage and played a whole bunch of funny, catchy songs, complete with between song patter. Click the pic to see/hear Larry The Cable Guy:

It's always fun to go to a club we haven't been to before, especially something out in the hinterlands as a change o' pace from the downtown L.A. or Hollywood scenes. Last night we went to Shamrocks Grill and Pub in Chino Hills to check in on the Miracle Dolls. The place was pretty darn full when we got there at 11:30 pm with plenty of locals having a good time drinking, hanging out, and not a hipster in sight. The evening was billed as a 'Night of Girl Power' and the 2nd of 4 bands ( Big Black Novel) was just finishing up when we arrived. (Wow, four bands on the bill and only two finished by 11:30? This would be a late night as Miracle Dolls were 'headlining.' We went searching for a quick snack (note: nothing except drive-through fast food is available in Chino Hills after 11pm, even on a Saturday night, the downside of the hinterlands), and got back in time to check out the next band, Nasty Little Habit. It's always interesting to hear/see a new band and this indie pop band from Orange County have good songwriting skills and were fun. Check out their song You Should Be My by clicking the pic below:
