This summer just got hotter, as the AVP Tour has added a team of professional dancers to its events! The 11-member group will debut at the birthplace of the AVP, Manhattan Beach, CA, on July 18th and 19th. And don’t miss their second appearance at nearby Hermosa Beach, CA, on August 8th and 9th.

The collective resume of the AVP Dancers is impressive: a former Laker Girl; former cheerleaders for the Dallas Cowboys, San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, Atlanta Falcons, and Carolina Panthers; and a finalist on Fox television's "So You Think You Can Dance." Come see the newest members of the AVP team--where the sand, sun, and dancers meet!

AVP star Angie Akers may be across the world, but she's bringing her experience at Norway's FIVB World Championship to fans everywhere.

A sample of Angie's latest musings:

"Coney Island starts this Friday and we are very bummed to miss it. If we were home, we would be flying there today. I am sure it will be a great event with some great competition. We will be following online.
We plan to celebrate the 4th of July with a big Team USA celebration. That is the last day of the event, so we can all relax a bit and have some fun.
We are heading out to the site now to cheer on EY/Nicole against the German girls. Maybe I will stop by and get strawberries while I am at it! ;)
More later!
Angie Akers"

The idea of playing beach volleyball in the dead of winter may seem like a novel idea, however, it is not the only unique aspect that fans can expect to see as part of the AVP Johnsonville Hot Winter Nights Indoor Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. The round robin format of the tour separates athletes from their normal teams seen during the summer, and in many cases puts long standing partners on opposing sides of the net.

While the entire schedule of athletes has yet to be finalized, some early confirmations are already setting the scene for what should be some very interesting match-ups.

The Hot Winter Nights Tour wastes no time getting off to an exciting start, as week one showcases some of the AVP's top talent. The women's side will feature AVP Tour veterans, Annett Davis, Jenny Johnson-Jordan, Katie Lindquist, and Holly McPeak.

Annett and Jenny have been partners on the outdoor tour for many years, and for the first time will face each other on opposing sides of the net at a Hot Winter Nights event. McPeak captured one indoor title in 2008 and will provide tough competition going into the 2009 season.

For Kerri Walsh and husband and fellow AVP pro, Casey Jennings, 2009 is already shaping up to be a great new year as the couple announced they are expecting their first child. The reigning two-time gold medalist shared the news with Access Hollywood host Billy Bush, "I'm chubby and I'm pregnant and it's awesome!"

Walsh will soon trade in her bikini and rigorous training schedule for a stroller and late-night feedings, a sacrifice that she describes as being the "very best cause in the whole world."

Throughout the 2008 Olympics, Kerri and partner Misty May-Treanor did not hide the fact that both of their post-Olympic plans included taking a break from the sand to start families of their own. With Kerri being 16 ½ weeks into her pregnancy, it seems that no time was wasted achieving this goal.

There is no question that the AVP Johnsonville Hot Winter Nights Tour visits cities that are not normally associated with beach volleyball. The indoor tour gives fans at each stop the rare opportunity to experience a sport that is normally enjoyed by fans living by the beach. However, beach volleyball could soon become a more frequent event in these landlocked cities, as the NCAA is considering adding it as a women's collegiate sport.

The idea of bringing the sport to the college level is still in its early stages, but it is possible that athletes could be representing their schools on the sand as early as Spring 2011.

While the game will remain the same at the college level, one thing that will change is the name of the sport. The NCAA has decided to adopt the sport under the name "sand volleyball," a departure from the traditional term "beach volleyball." The reason for the change is to broaden the appeal of the sport to schools in non-coastal areas, which do not have access to a beach but could easily install sand courts.
