HERE IS a tiny clip of "Circumference", shot from a funny angle at the Victoria Fringe Festival preview two nights ago by a great guy named Christopher who's dedicating himself to documenting anything and everything that's part of the Vic Fringe. He's also the one responsible for the interview clips I just put on the main page of this Myspace site -- thanks, Chris!!
And yes, you may notice I am wearing a t-shirt of...myself. Anything for marketing and publicity, I tell you. (I don't actually wear it during the show, only as I walk around town and try to conjure up an audience.)
This excerpt is part of the second scene in the show -- a flashback to 7th grade gym class: I've been trying to run around the outdoor track, but gave up, and have just been caught in my failure by my Phy Ed teacher, Ms. Gleby.
..
Also, here is this incredibly sweet woman (the videographer's partner, I think) talking about "Circumference" and "Herschel Gertz". I had no idea she'd recorded this -- I just found it online by accident. Awww!

So, I found out about two weeks ago that I got off of the waiting list for the Victoria Fringe Festival, and INTO the Fest at the VERY last minute -- "last minute" meaning, "exactly enough time to FRANTICALLY buy a plane ticket, a Victoria Clipper ticket, and order marketing materials to promote my show before having to, like, BE there, DOING my show". In fact, I got into the festival too late to be included in the program, so I have to pump up my marketing efforts a little bit so that potential audience members know that I'm participating, instead of whatever show it was that dropped out (thank you, show that dropped out! I love you!). Therefore, if you all have ANYone you can spread the word to in the BC area, let them know that "Circumference" is on its way to Victoria, and that even though it might not be in all the various forms of print, it is absolutely a show to see! Details are below! :-) CIRCUMFERENCE at the 2008 Victoria Fringe! The Ghosts of Gym Teachers Past haunt the Fear of Fitness Centers Present and the Obsession with Weight Loss Future in a show the Pioneer Press calls "**** A MUST-SEE: poignant, sensitive, and hysterically funny." From Amy Salloway, the creator of the hit touring productions "Does This Monologue Make Me Look Fat?" and "So Kiss Me Already, Herschel Gertz!" comes this new, mostly-true solo comedy about size, sweat…and exercising your demons.WHERE:Victoria Event Centre 1415 Broad Street Victoria BC WHEN:Thur Aug 21, 9:45 pm Sat Aug 23, 5:45 pm Sun Aug 24, 9:15 pm Tues Aug 26, 9:30 pm Thur Aug 28, 7:45 pm Sat Aug 30, 9:30 pm TICKETS:$9.00 with purchase of a Fringe button 250-507-2663 www.intrepidtheatre.com www.victoriafringe.comFOR MORE INFO:Www.amysalloway.com

Proving that a summer of Fringe Festivals makes one lose all track of time and chronology, these are reviews for "Circumference" from the Winnipeg Fringe, which came BEFORE the Calgary Fringe, but alas, my blog entries are in the wrong order. "Circumference" got "Best of Fest" for its venue in Winnipeg (hooray!), which was lovely and unexpected...it wasn't the continuous sellout that "So Kiss Me Already, Herschel Gertz!" had been, but the audiences were great, and very appreciative. CBC Review, July 16, 2008:Link here.✭✭✭✭ Written by and starring Amy Salloway, "Circumference" cleverly explores one woman's antagonistic relationship with her body and her treadmill. A lifelong battle with weight leads Amy to her ultimate goal of adulthood: to get her insurance to cover gastric bypass surgery so she can find someone to love her. With that, we are swept along on trips to the local convenience store and nights dipping into the secret universe of post-surgery chat boards. Salloway uses humor and a whole lot of energy to delve into fat stereotypes, the haunting influence of a junior high school gym class and a unique way to get an extra serving of vegetables. Circumference is extremely relatable for anyone who dislikes something about their body and the near full house on opening night proved women's body issues can also make the men in the crowd laugh. Though I did hear a couple of women leaving the show talking about how much weight Salloway is likely to lose given the physicality of the performance. I think they might have missed the point. Winnipeg Sun, July 18, 2008:Link here.Pesky belly bulge may be the subject at hand, but there's nothing flabby about the latest effort from Minneapolis' Amy Salloway ("So Kiss Me Already, Herschel Gertz!"). The lovable drama queen's comical and endearing exploration of her past and present body woes -- ignited while she's waiting to see if her insurer will fund gastric-bypass surgery -- takes a firm stance on society's tight expectations of women's waistlines. But she doesn't try to make everyone feel sorry for her because she doesn't meet them. Instead, she takes us on a relatable journey, from her horrifying locker-room experiences as an obese adolescent to her current struggle at the adult gym -- where her similarly miserable crush announces he has started seeing another woman who is "so beautiful." At her lowest point, Salloway finds herself binging and vowing never to leave the house again -- even after she swore off her weight obsession and got a "divorce" from her body. Clearly, this quest for perfection has its ups and downs -- but there's a lot to love. Sun Rating: 4 out of 5 starsWinnipeg Free Press, July 17, 2008:Link here.Comedic tales of life in the fat lane are Amy Salloway's bread and butter. The Minneapolis-based performer, who brought summer-camp frolic "So Kiss Me Already, Herschel Gertz!", to the fringe in 2006, serves up more of the same humour and heartbreak in this well-rounded sequel (Amy's interruptive editorial note: it's really not meant to be a sequel.). Back in pigtails and intentionally unflattering baggy gym gear (Amy interrupting again: um, I actually didn't intend for my costume to be unflattering...I guess some wardrobe consultation is in order!), Amy recounts a battle of the bulge that began in junior high school gym class and may end on a gastric bypass surgeon's table. As a teen, tormented by a sadistic gym teacher and cruel peers, Amy declares she is divorcing her body, but years later, she still can't shake the fat -- or the self-loathing and public mortifications that accompany it. Longing for love, but convinced she's unlovable in her current state, she's finally driven to consider an extreme surgical remedy that would stick a knife in the heart of the notion that self-acceptance is the only theatrically acceptable happy ending. But first, she makes a fateful foray to a gym, where she meets a man who is even more physically damaged -- and he's fresh from a coma, to boot. We should all be so lucky. But will this prince save Amy from herself? Will she make peace with her body at last? Stay tuned. The story takes a few side trips, some uncomfortably painful and filled with raw emotion, others painfully funny and filled with raw vegetables. This is not the most substantial meal at the fringe, but if you're grazing for a tasty one-hour morsel, Circumference is a sweet treat. -- Pat St. Germain Uptown Magazine, July 24, 2008:Link here. This brutally honest one-woman show by Minneapolis native Amy Salloway tells of her lifelong struggle with her weight. Torturous junior high gym classes where she was teased mercilessly for finishing last in the Presidential Fitness Test and the lonely nights that come with a poor self-image have convinced Amy that a gastric bypass operation is the only chance for a "normal" life. Salloway is a charming performer, and assumes the quirky characters of her story easily - in particular, the spazzy junior high friend and the Super America clerk with the accent straight out of Fargo. She gives a high energy performance that spreads to the audience. Jenny Review, July 20, 2008:She's ba-a-ck! Amy Salloway delighted us with "So Kiss Me Already, Herschel Gertz!" two years ago. Now she's back with "Circumference". Anyone who's struggled with their weight (or anything, for that matter) will immediately feel their hearts go out to Amy. Her quests are to get bariatric surgery to lose weight, and a date. She suffers with exercising, gym class, dieting and "profound datelessness". This extremely funny, talented and just plain nice actress hits the spot! -- Lisa Campbell

Current mood: grateful
Hello everyone!I have been horribly remiss in keeping this Myspace page updated and edited -- I guess that's what happens when you're on the Fringe road, juggling performances of shows, seeing OTHER people's shows, promoting your own show, and trying to find wifi here and there. SO, belated as they are, here are some reviews from the Calgary Fringe of "Circumference". The Calgary Sun -- Dave on the FringeAugust 5, 2008 -- by Dave BreakenridgeLink hereEvery so often at the Fringe comes a show, that is personal, funny, poignant and touching, a show carefully crafted to take advantage of each moment's full emotional effect, whether highs or lows. This year that show would seem to be Amy Salloway's Circumference. The show is about the battle with the bulge and the battle many of have against our own bodies and against a beauty-obsessed world. The show jumps between her past and her present body issues — as a 7th-Grader ostracized by her classmates and as an adult suffering through loneliness, depression and a backwards insurance approval process to qualify for gastric bypass surgery — as Salloway manages to offer up tales that are familiar to many without ever resorting to "poor me" tactics, even when the story has her at her lowest points. And boy are there low points, but even during those, there are plenty laughs to be had. Salloway especially manages to inject comedy into some cringe-inducing moments involving her Grade 7 gym teacher, who routinely singles the poor 12-year-old out in front of her fellow classmates. As a performer, Salloway is tireless, and delightful, with range and comedic timing to boot. Along the way, through the humiliation, name-calling, Circumference leads to some semblance of self-acceptance that avoids coming off as flabby, tired cliche. 4 ½ StarsCalgary Herald – August 5, 2008by Stephen HuntLink here.Four Stars out of Five
At the end of the (fringe) day, when patrons are blurrily stumbling from one show to another, sluggish and fuzzy, frequently hungry and sometimes a bit grumpy, nothing works better to restore their faith in fringe theatre than strong writing. All the high concepts, splashy sets, slide shows, shock value or cursing can't subsitute for good, strong writing.
What's strong writing? I once had a writing teacher who said, "the audience only responds to the truth--and they recognize it, immediately."
Amy Salloway's "Circumference" is ostensibly about her very own personal
battle of the bulge. It's a one-person show reliving her days in Minneapolis attempting to qualify for gastric bypass surgery that is covered by her insurer (it ain't cheap). The catch, in this case, is that in order to prove she can't lose weight, Salloway must first commit to a six month stretch of completely documented diet, exercise and futility in order to get the bypass surgery, which she figures is her last best shot at living a normal person's life. "Circumference" is all about how Salloway gets her life and her body back even as her plan to have gastric bypass surgery goes awry. It's smart, funny, and most importantly, honest. You can almost see her brain working towards a punch line as she tells us one of her fat horror stories, and then, at the last moment, going, oh, I'll just write the truth instead. Salloway is also just as engaging a performer as she is a writer. The night before I saw Circumference, I asked some volunteers what their favorite shows so far had been and one said, 'Circumference--but it's about women's body image issues, so I don't know how much guys would be into it.' Memo to volunteer: guys invented women's body image issues. And we have a few of our own as well. Circumference pulled a full house Monday, and it was an equal divide between guys and women. There was no divide between who was laughing, though: that would be everyone lucky enough to be at the show. Calgary Herald -- Five Fringe Shows Not To Be Missed -- August 7, 2008By Stephen HuntIt's the final countdown for the Calgary Fringe -- it wraps up Sunday -- so we decided to turn Centre Stage into a fringe greatest hits, featuring our favourite fringe productions of the week. We haven't seen everything, but we've seen a few terrific shows that are not to be missed. In no particular order, here are a few of Centre Stage's fringe faves... 3.) Circumference. Amy Salloway's one-person show about a heavy woman's (is that OK to say?) last best chance at living a normal life: gastric bypass surgery, and how being denied it helps her get her body and herself back. Solloway is that rarity, an equally talented writer and performer who has written for National Public Radio and CBC Radio, among others. She's a hilarious, honest, unsparing storyteller with a great sense of pace, who will cause you never to look at a zucchini the same way again.

Hi everyone! Just a reminder that I have three more performances of "Circumference" here at the Ottawa Fringe, and then TWO additional performances at the brand-new Piggyback Fringe in Wakefield, QC. To wit:Ottawa Fringe Festival -- Venue 3- Studio Leonard Beaulne135 Seraphin-Marion, University of Ottawa Thursday June 26, 9:30 PM Saturday June 28, 12:00 PM Sunday June 29, 5:30 PM Tickets $10.00 with purchase of a Fringe button (613) 232-6162 or www.ottawafringe.com and The Piggyback Fringe -- Black Sheep Venue420 Riverside Drive, Wakefield, QC Mon June 30, 6:15 pm Mon June 30, 9:15 pm Tickets $10.00 www.piggybackfringe.ca If you haven't caught the show yet, I hereby jump up and down (in a virtual way) and say "Come! Please come! This is your chance! Tell your friends! Yo! Let's sell this puppy OUT!" So far, "Circumference" audiences have been a joy -- enthusiastic, and warm, and so receptive, so involved. They haven't, however, been...huge. I know, I know, size isn't supposed to matter...but...Studio Leonard Beaulne isn't exactly the coliseum -- it'd be nice to see it really really full! Every uncomfortable metal folding chair warmed by a Fringing tush! That is my goal. Join me in the quest. Also, if you HAVE already seen "Circumference" and you're the type who enjoys sharing your opinions and writing reviews, by ALL MEANS, post a review on the Ottawa Fringe website: Ottawa Fringe Website.I would love that. So much. And you can be honest, I don't mind. I got an email today from "Mike in Ottawa" telling me that, "I saw your shoe last night & felt it wasn't as good as last year. It started out slowly & I think you could of achieved the same result in half the time. I hope you get honest feedback for your writing from people you respect."He may be right: my shoe last year was pretty stylin'...I knew I should have packed that pair. Anyway: "Circumference". Three more chances in Ottawa. Hope to see you there. Love, Amy

Hey Everybody! This is just a LAST BLAST to remind you that CIRCUMFERENCE starts its 2008 Canadian tour by opening at the OTTAWA FRINGE FESTIVAL Friday night (June 20th), and I would love to have YOU and everyone you know there! I'm a little behind on publicity this year compared to past years -- usually I am a swirling tornado of emailing, postering and flyering, and this year I've been beset by quite a few mishaps (including my order of marketing materials for Ottawa failing to arrive in Minneapolis, and then, after a frantic re-ordering and re-shipping to the Fringe at the last minute, failing to arrive in Ottawa! Yes indeed, no postcards or flyers yet, even at this late date...and probably a forest of trees that sacrificed their lives for nothing, which is so sad I can't even think about it or I'll cry). Because of that, I'm really trying to kick the VIRAL marketing into gear and just have everyone I know talk up the show as much as they're willing or able...plus, I really believe this is a good play, and I want it to reach the masses. SO, please spread the word, the enthusiasm and the love, and hope to see you in lovely (if rainy) Ottawa! Circumference and Broken Brain on the City Pages A-list today.Writes Quinton Skinner, theatre dude...
An injury to the brain is nothing to laugh at unless, you know, you find a way to make it funny. Interact Center’s "Broken Brain Summit" is inspired by true stories of performers in the show who have experienced brain trauma, and if you’re familiar with the center’s performances, you know how they embrace and examine disability with wit and profound humor. Amy Salloway writes the show, and if you’re familiar with her frank and witty monologues, you’ll pony up the dough and stick around for "Circumference". First seen at last year’s Fringe, Salloway’s one-woman show ponders gastric-bypass surgery, the horrors of gym classes past, and an on-again, off-again relationship with her body. Salloway has a gift for detail, a technician’s skill with words, and a dead-on instinct for finding humor where others might mine only darkness. — Quinton SkinnerBless him. In case anyone thinks I take ANY publicity like that for granted - or in case anyone in the theatre field ANYwhere perceives me to be some kind of bitchy, whining diva who complains about minutia because she thinks she’s the hottest thing since Bryl-Creme -- I would like to state for the record, merely because this is a good time to do so, that I am absolutely and utterly AGOG every time someone so much as knows who I am, much less writes about me, much less writes kind things about me, much less writes truly complimentary things about me. It blows my MIND that I’ve been mentioned in City Pages four times since this past August...I never, ever, EVER thought I’d be that person. I have had more than my 15 minutes of fame, and I am so, so grateful, and I am well aware that it could all stop tomorrow, and if it did, I would not ever complain about not having gotten a fair share of media attention. It doesn’t matter to me that Minneapolis isn’t NYC or LA or Broadway. I feel grateful nonetheless. Whether this will result in actual audiences at "Circumference" remains to be seen (my prediction: prolly not). One can hope. :-) Anyway. I’m happy for me, and I’m happy for "Broken Brain Summit", which is well-deserved of these accolades too.

Current mood: exhausted
Hi all --
One last reminder that this coming Friday and Saturday, April 11th and 12th, are the final two public performances of my solo comedy "Circumference" at Old Arizona Studio, running as the late-night after Interact’s "Broken Brain Summit". If you’ve seen "Circumference" already, in any of its incarnations or locations, thankyou thankyou thankyou for doing so. I am sure I loved having you in my audience, and I hope your hands didn’t bleed from all that enthusiastic clapping, and I also hope you’re still wearing your "Circumference" t-shirt, carrying your "Circumference" lunchbox and playing with your "Circumference" action figure (with animatronic jogging motion!), since those were all VERY (very!) limited-run collectables and have probably at least doubled in value by now. (Remember that if the lunchbox has started retaining odors, a little vinegar and baking soda swished around in there will do the trick.)
If you HAVEN’T seen "Circumference", seriously, dudes, now is the time. There is humor, there is sadness, there is me aerobicizing all over the freakin’ stage and sweating like you have NEVER seen a female person sweat before (don’t worry, I make sure you can’t smell me — note vinegar and baking soda, above), there are hard truths and embarrassing confessions and hyperbolic gym teachers and even some slightly educational info about bariatric surgery. There are set pieces that, karmically, coordinate with the "Broken Brain" set so it looks like we planned it or something, and there is the cutest, tiniest approximation of a treadmill ever.
It’s a real show now...and it’s about to hit the road for Calgary, Ottawa, Winnipeg and a few other locales, and I would LOVE you to see it before it goes, especially because I won’t be here for our Fringe this year.
SOOOooo...all details are below. You are of COURSE invited to see "Broken Brain Summit" as well, which is a fantastic production...and you’ll notice that you get a deal if you see both shows! Please write if you have any questions, thanks for all your support past, present and future, and hope to see you this weekend at "Circumference"!

Current mood: dorky
Read this article and pay attention about two-thirds of the way down. Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh!I wonder who submitted this entry? I know all the performers mentioned in that sentence...T.J. Susan and I were all at the Orlando Fringe last year....T.J., Charles and I were all at Vancouver last year and in 2004...I can’t think of when we were all four in the same place at the same time to have inspired that sentence in someone’s head, though. Also, those three are way, way, WAYYYY more big-time than I. It’s like saying, "The Fringe Festival has birthed many solo shows, such as those by Superman, Batman, Hong Kong Phooey, and Wonderwoman." Dorky though it be, I am more excited to be mentioned on Wikipedia than I’ve been about almost any other media mention. I mean, dude...Wikipedia! Also, today’s Google April Fool’s joke...very cute. (Go to Google and click on the tiny link under the search box.) Also, I’ve been way, way too busy to blog, which is sad, because I have had SO many things I’ve wanted to vent about. I hate having to just blog in my head. I feel actual withdrawal from my journal, a sense of longing and yearning. There are so many things it would be therapeutic to write about at the moment, but there’s no time in this period of pre-"Circumference" franticness. Soon, I hope, I can catch up.

Current mood: groggy
Hello, Everybody! A bunch of you know this already, but just in case you didn’t: my most recent solo show, "Circumference", is about to have a brief run as the later-night show at Old Arizona Studio, Fridays and Saturdays April 4, 5, 11 and 12, following performances of Interact Center’s production of "Broken Brain Summit"! Why this joining of two seemingly-random theatre productions, you ask? Well, it’s because I helped write "Broken Brain", working with Interact’s company members to create a musical based on their experiences of neurological disorders and brain trauma. This run of "Broken Brain" features a HUGE amount of new material developed with the current (fantastic) cast, and it’s really cool. Also cool is the fact that this incarnation of "Circumference" is new and improved since its debut at the 2007 Fringe — off-book and fully sound-cue-tastic and everything! What all that coolness leads up to is, you should come see BOTH SHOWS! Please, please do so. For one thing, both shows together add up to the length of a typical Guthrie play, but are much cheaper. For another, you get a discount if you see both productions. For thirdly, following the April performances of "Circumference", the show hits the road for gigs at Stage North in Washburn, WI; the Her-icane Festival of Women’s Performance in Saskatoon; and the Fringes in Ottawa, Winnipeg and Calgary...and I need YOU, the audience, to help me get it in shape for its travels. And fourthedly, I DIDN’T get drawn in the lottery for our Fringe this year (snif!), so this might be my only solo show run in town for a while! If you’ve been waiting for the right time to take action on these annoying updates and actually see me onstage, THIS is that time. I am telling you. Yes. All info is below...feel free to email with any questions (or, for example, if you’d like to usher!), feel free to FORWARD this announcement to anyone and everyone you know, AND hope to see you at Old Arizona!
