Young Adult and Teen Librarians from all over Michigan determine the winner. Since 2001, the Thumbs Up! Award selection process has included a teen vote. Hundreds of teens voted for their favorite title out of the Top Twenty list; the 2008 teen vote winner was Twisted by Laurie Halse Anderson. October 2, 2008 - Thursday
There was a discussion recently on a mailing list consisting of professional librarians, authors, and other YA book related people, about books with "bad covers".  I thought that it might an interesting topic to blog about.
What makes a cover bad?  I am not sure if I can tell you what makes a cover bad, but I can tell you a bad cover when I see one.  Now, a bad cover is not at all indicative of how good a book is, and we should not judge books by their covers, but often times people do.  Here are some covers I think could have used a little bit of help:
The paperback cover of Summer Interns by Carrie Karasyov
Paperback cover of Bad Kitty by Michelle Jaffee.  The hard cover is so cute!  The paperback is a bit scary.
Paperback of An Abudance of Katherines by John Green
The Cover of Losing Joe's Place by Gordon Korman.  This cover was fine when I was in middle school.  Now it needs a bit of an update.

Please feel free to comment with any of the books you think might have "bad" covers, or feel free to dissagree!

September 29, 2008 - Monday

Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games." The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Kat's sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place.

This book was amazing.  I couldn't put it down.  It has everything: adventure, sci-fi, romance, political intrigue.  This is the first book in a planned trilogy and I cannot wait to see what happens in the next two books.
