Hi everyone..... What is wrong with Main Stream Media? Three under reported stories of interest: 1) Rep Jane Harmon (D-CA) story (1) If you check out the link in the footnotes below, it will take you to the unreported story of the month: Bombshell: Rep. Jane Harman Caught on Tape Agreeing to Lobby for Alleged AIPAC/Israel Spies? Posted by Jeremy Scahill (2), Rebel Reports (3) at 8:50 AM on April 20, 2009. The
story is that Harmon, caught on FBI wiretapp, agreed to lobby for
release of Israeli spies, in exchange for their help in getting her an
important committee chairmanship (which she did not get). The important
part is that Former Attorney General Gonzalez then traded the favor (he
killed the prosecution of the Israeli spies) in exchange for Harmon's
support of the illegal domestic surveillance program. The point is that the Bush White House
was able to compromise so many Democrats to go along with their
unconstitutional domestic surveillance, torture programs, and so many
other impeachable offenses. The news this week points out the obvious reason that Pelosi decided that impeachment was “off the table”. 2) The Pulitzer-winning investigation that dare not be uttered on TV Found here: http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2009/04/21/pulitzer/The New York Times' David Barstow won a richly deserved Pulitzer Prize yesterday
for two articles (4) that, despite being featured as major news stories
on the front page of The Paper of Record, were completely suppressed
(5) by virtually every network and cable news show, which to this day
have never informed their viewers about what Barstow uncovered. Here
is how the Pulitzer Committee (6) described Barstow's exposés: Awarded to David Barstow of The New York Times
for his tenacious reporting that revealed how some retired generals,
working as radio and television analysts, had been co-opted by the Pentagon to make its case for the war in Iraq, and how many of them also had undisclosed ties to companies that benefited from policies they defended. So the mainstream media was complicit in selling the illegal war of aggression. We knew that. But this Pulitzer Prize
winning reporting...demonstration the direct link between government
propaganda and the Mainstream Media; cannot find the light of day. No
interviews by Keith Olberman, Chris Mathews, or Rachel Maddow, much less a report by CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, of Fixed (aka "FOX") News. 3) And finally: Siegelman Deserves New Trial Because of Judge's 'Grudge,' Evidence Shows http://www.huffingtonpost.com/andrew-kreig/siegelman-deserves-new-tr_b_201455.htmlThe Alabama federal judge
who presided over the 2006 corruption trial of the state's former
governor holds a grudge against the defendant for helping to expose the
judge's own alleged corruption six years ago. Former Gov. Don Siegelman
therefore deserves a new trial with an unbiased judge ─ not one whose
privately owned company, Doss Aviation, has been enriched by the Bush
administration's award of $300 million in contracts since 2006, making
the judge millions in non-judicial income. These are the
opinions of Missouri attorney Paul B. Weeks, who is speaking out
publicly for the first time since his effort in 2003 to obtain the
impeachment of U.S. District Judge Mark E. Fuller of Montgomery on Doss Aviation-related allegations. This one is not under reported yet as it just came out today. I expect this to be buried in a deep media grave, but we will see. **FOOTNOTES** 1) jane harmon story http://www.alternet.org/blogs/rights/137494/bombshell:_rep._jane_harman_caught_on_tape_agreeing_to_lobby_for_alleged_aipac_israel_spies/2) Jeremy Scahill http://www.alternet.org/bloggers/scahill/3) Rebel Reports http://rebelreports.com/4) ...two articles... http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/30/washington/30general.html?hp5) ...completely suppressed... http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/04/22/analysts/index.html6) ...the Pulitzer Committee... http://www.pulitzer.org/citation/2009-Investigative-ReportingMany thanks to The Free Press ( http://www.freepress.org/index2.php), and to my friend Pete, the Freep Board Prez, for assembling this!

Rachel Corrie . Today would be the 30th birthday of my daughter Rachel, who was run over by an Israeli bulldozer in Gaza in 2003 as she tried to save a Palestinian family's home from demolition. Last month, when my husband Craig and I traveled to Gaza with CODEPINK, it was so moving for us to reconnect with the families and the children that Rachel cared so deeply about. . The 793,520 children of Gaza (56% of the population) have lived under occupation and siege all of their lives. They suffered unconscionably through the attacks and devastation inflicted upon them by the Israeli military during twenty-two days of horror in December and January. . Hundreds did not survive. But those who did, still smile and laugh like all children. They are beautiful, resilient, curious and full of potential. They deserve the basics that all children in the world should have: ample food, clean water, healthcare, safe places to play and learn. They deserve the tools to deal with their nightmares, and sleep that is not punctuated by bombing. . They deserve life, freedom, and hope. . We can be a part of the hope and the solution by arming ourselves with the experience, knowledge, and insight to be stronger advocates for these children and their families--to open the borders, to end the siege, to end the occupation, and to see justice prevail. . We hope you will join CODEPINK in the campaign to Speak Out for the Youth of Gaza. . In peace, Cindy Corrie . Join a delegation: . . * One, May 28-June 5, is open to everyone and will enter from Egypt . * A Jewish delegation, June 5-14, will enter from Israel. Click here to find out how to travel with us. . If you can't join our delegation, you can still help the children of Gaza. Your donation of $10 will purchase a backpack full of school supplies for one child. $100 will contribute toward building an International Friendship Playground at one of the schools bombed during the invasion. To donate, click here and if you want to help Gazan children in your mother's name, you can donate and we will send her a card with news of your gift. . . And don't forget, you are all invited to our Mother's Day celebration in front of the White House May 9-10! For more info, visit www.codepinkalert.org/mothersday. . Thank you for showing the children of Gaza that another world is possible! . Allison, Audrey, Blaine, Dana, Desiree, Farida, Gael, Gayle, Janna, Janet, Jean, Jodie, Liz, Lori, Lydia, Medea, Nancy, Pam, Paris, Rae and Tighe . P.S. We'd love for you to be part of our Virtual Mother's Day Quilt--an online photo mosaic that showcases our strength and diversity as mothers and women working for peace. Upload our Mother's Day pledge here, take a photo of yourself holding the print out, and send the picture to photos4codepink@gmail.com along with your name, location and any other info you'd like us to include, and we'll add you to our quilt. We can't wait to see your beautiful face! .

Feith Dares Obama to Enforce the Law
.
-By David Swanson .
.
Doug Feith is bluffing big time, and he*s lifted Dick Cheney and George Bush onto the table as his bet. Now if only he could stop visibly sweating.
.
Feith*s Wall Street Journal column (1) on Friday argues that Spain has no right to put Americans on trial for torture, at least not second-tier officials who provided pseudo-legal justifications for torture and advocated its use, actions that Feith believes should be immune from prosecution, unlike ordering torture or engaging in it.
.
"If President Barack Obama and the prosecutors see a crime to be prosecuted, they can act," Feith wrote.
.
In fact, the job is Eric Holder*s and the choice is no choice at all. Holder is legally required to prosecute those whom evidence suggests have engaged in, ordered, or otherwise facilitated torture. That list includes Doug Feith, but it most prominently includes George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney, both of whom have admitted to authorizing torture in televised interviews. Feith is absolutely right that it makes the most sense to prosecute first and foremost those who actually gave the orders. Spain makes itself look a bit silly starting with those lower down, but you can imagine the xenophobic bile that would be gushing out of the Wall Street Journal if Spain had begun with Dubya. Title 18 of the U.S. Code, our national laws, our red-white-and-blue tough-on-crime book of books has a little section called 2441 that prescribes prison or death to any American who commits or conspires to commit a war crime, including torture or cruel or inhuman treatment. Remember this was what caused then White House counsel Alberto Gonzales to warn the president and others that they should play word games as the best defense of their own necks.
.
Title 18 also contains section 2340, which -- like 2441 -- defines torture with clarity and sanity, and prescribes prison or death for those who engage in it, and prison for those who conspire to commit it. These laws were in place long before the Bush-era charade of Congress pretending to ban torture and Bush pretending he could legalize it with a signing statement. The United States had also already signed and ratified the Convention Against Torture which requires criminal prosecution of "an act by any person which constitutes complicity or participation in torture."
.
So the United States is actually required to do what Feith dares it to try and the American people support. But that doesn*t mean that Spain (or Britain) has no right to step in while the United States fails to act. In fact, a few months ago the United States did the same thing. In January a U.S. court tried a citizen of Liberia for committing torture in Liberia and sentenced him to 97 years in a U.S. prison. At the time, then Attorney General Michael Mukasey said "I hope this case will serve as a model to future prosecutions of this type."
.
So, by the recommendation of the top law-enforcement official under President Bush, Spain should indeed prosecute Bush and his co-conspirators. Which brings us to Feith*s claim that, apart from jurisdictional questions, he himself is innocent. Feith does not attempt to defend the other five men facing likely indictment in Spain, or Bush, or Cheney. But he claims that he himself never provided guidance that led to torture.
.
Feith does not address the fact that this is contradicted by a famous memo written by top Pentagon lawyer William Haynes and signed off on by Donald Rumsfeld. Nor does Feith address most of the claims made about him by author Phillipe Sands, who reported that Feith told him he*d "played a major role in" Bush*s decision to declare the Geneva Conventions inapplicable to certain people. Sands reported that Feith pointed him to an article Feith had written in 1985 arguing for destroying the Geneva Conventions in order to save them.
.
Jason Leopold has catalogued additional evidence:
.
"In addition to Sands* account, the Senate Armed Services Committee and the American Civil Liberties Union have released documents showing that Haynes regularly briefed Feith about a list of aggressive interrogation techniques for use against *high-value* Guantanamo detainees. Other documents released last year show that Feith worked closely with Pentagon general counsel William Haynes II in 2002 on an Army and Air Force survival-training program called Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE), which were meant to prepare U.S. soldiers for abuse they might suffer if captured by an outlaw regime, against detainees at Guantanamo. One of the SERE techniques used against detainees was waterboarding. Moreover, Feith and Haynes were members of a Pentagon *working group* that met from January through March 2003 and prepared a report for Rumsfeld stating what methods military interrogators could use to extract information from a prisoner at Guantanamo. Yoo worked on the legal memo for the group. Early drafts of the report advocated intimidating prisoners with dogs, removing prisoners* clothing, shaving their beards, slapping prisoners in the face and waterboarding."
.
Jane Mayer, in her book "The Dark Side", wrote:
.
"These memos denied legal protection not just to Al Qaeda, but to the entire Taliban. All were described as *illegal combatants*. ... One of the earliest and most ardent proponents of this legal interpretation was Douglas Feith. ... A neo-conservative, he prided himself on being *unfashionable*, by which he evidently meant breaking with the more centrist foreign-policy establishment. As far back as the 1980s, when he had been a midlevel Reagan Administration official, Feith had argued that terrorists did not deserve to be protected by the Geneva Conventions. The issue had first arisen in connection with the Palestinian Liberation Organization. Feith, a passionate Zionist, had helped to convince the Reagan Administration to oppose international efforts to protect anti-Israel terrorists as soldiers. John Yoo and other Bush Administration lawyers seized on this position as a precedent."
.
Peter Weiss provides this analysis:
"The Spanish complaint alleges that, on February 3, 2002, Feith, in his capacity as DOD Undersecretary for Legal Affairs, issued a legal analysis which served as the basis of the subsequent document of February 7 denying the protection of the Geneva Convention, including their basic Common Article 3, to the Guantanamo detainees. The complaint goes on to state that this is consistent with an article Feith published in the 1980s in "The National Interest" in which he took a similar position concerning the conflicts in Central America and characterized the 1977 Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions as *a masterwork of amoral design*."
.
But all of this is really the least of Feith*s worries, for there is a crime worse than torture, and the evidence that he engaged in that worse crime is overwhelming. I refer, of course, to the crime of aggressive war. In fact, when the Washington Post published Feith*s defense of a memo he had written proposing that the United States aggressively attack "a non-Al Qaeda target like Iraq," Feith*s defense seemed oblivious to the crime involved and did not even attempt to suggest that he had not urged a war of aggression.
.
It is this sort of obliviousness that leads people like Feith and Cheney to mouth off in the media, and that may ultimately be their undoing. Let*s hope they*re advising Bush on his forthcoming book.

Stop corporate fascists from taking over our food supply
.
From: activist.thepen@gmail.com
(ThePen)
Subject: Urgent: Stop Corporate Fascists From Taking Over Our Food
Supply
.
Please note: We told you about this issue last week and many of you responded. But we still need your comments with the USDA by the end of the day, Monday, March 16, to stop the incredibly destructive corporate scheme described below. Congress is already trying to stack the deck so only lobbyists have a meaningful voice in this debate. We can stop them if you speak out now.
.
Radio Chip Animal Identification Would Do ALL Harm To Our Real Food Safety, And No Good
.
It would be too easy to blame the recent peanut panic on one criminal corporation owner, who KNOWINGLY shipped Salmonella contaminated product. But before that it was millions of pounds of ground beef, and before that tomatoes all over the country, and on and on. And when you ask where is all this horrible filth coming from, with a over a million cases of Salmonella in the U.S. alone every year, the answer is self-evident. It's the huge factory farms that overflow with seas of untreated animal waste, that then spill into our food supply, including through our agricultural plant crop fields.
.
We have a lot of work to do to clean up this giant mess, but the first thing we have to do is STOP a lunatic boondoggle being pushed by these same corporate interests, to force radio computer chip implanting of literally every farm animal in the country, EXCEPT on their own factory farms. It is absolutely nothing but a further attempt to drive small family farms out of business, who in fact are our safest source of reliably clean food now.
.
The proposed National Animal Identification System (NAIS) would force even the smallest healthy farms to buy expensive new computer tracking equipment, and potentially would subject them to gestapo-like tactics by the USDA if they are in even slight technical non-compliance. And all this just to fatten the pockets of the RFID chip manufacturers, and to make it LOOK like something is being done to make our food safer.
.
The special one click action page below will send your personal message to all your members Congress and also directly to the U.S. Department of Agriculture who is trying to rush this thing through without adequate scrutiny.
.
Stop NAIS Action Page: http://www.peaceteam.net/action/pnum942.php
.
This action is especially urgent because the U.S. House Agriculture Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy and Poultry is holding a hearing on NAIS implementation on March 11, and many farm activists fear the plan is to push it out for a full vote in Congress faster than a greased pig, before we the people have a meaningful chance to speak out.
.
You may not have a House member on that particular subcommittee, but you can pressure your own House member to tell they colleagues on it that there is massive constituent pressure against NAIS. For the especially mobilized on the action page above there is a link to the phone numbers for those on the subcommittee, because they are in fact your representative as an American citizen if they sit on it.
.
Below are some more extensive truth points you can select from in drafting your comments or on the phone, again linked to from the action page above.
.
NAIS was designed by NIAA (the National Institute of Animal Agriculture), a corporate consortium consisting of Monsanto, industrial meat producers such as Cargill and Tyson, and surveillance companies such Viatrace, AgInfoLink, and Digital Angel. The NAIS scheme fits agribusiness, biotech, and surveillance companies to a T:
.
1) They are already computerized, and they engineered a corporate loophole: If an entity owns a vertically integrated, birth-to-death factory system with thousands of animals (as the Cargills and Tysons do), it does not have to tag and track each one but instead a herd is given a single lot number.
.
2). NAIS will only be burdensome and costly (fees, tags, computer equipment, time) to small farmers which helps push them out of business, thus leaving more market to giant agribusiness.
.
3) Agribusiness wants to reassure export customers that the US meat industry is finally cleaning up its widespread contamination. NAIS would give that appearance ... without incurring the cost of a real cleanup.
.
4) NAIS will allow total control over the competition: Owners of even a single chicken would be required to register private information, the Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates of their 'premise' and if any animal leaves its 'premise', the owner will be required to obtain an ID number for it and have the animal microchipped. All information, including 24 hour GPS surveillance would be fed into a vast corporate data bank, allowing for ease of false slaughter to hide true problems or to substitute biotech's genetically engineered animals.
.
5) NAIS may allow plundering of farmers through required DNA samples: DNA samples would be invaluable to Monsanto and biotech corporations genetically engineering animals. Farmers who raise heritage breeds would have no say in how their distinct DNA would be used and to the sole profit of biotech companies.
.
6) The advantage for the surveillance companies is obvious: Compulsory tagging of 6 million sheep, 7 million horses, 63 million hogs, 97 million cows, 260 million turkeys, 300 million laying hens, 9 billion chickens, and untold numbers of bison, alpaca, quail, and other animals -- and new animals being born, means a massive self-perpetuating market.
.
Please take action now to stop this insanity. Our health and our lives depend on it.
.
Stop NAIS Action Page: http://www.peaceteam.net/action/pnum942.php
.
The health claims for NAIS are a sham though fear of disease is used to advance it. NAIS does not touch the contaminated source of E.coli, salmonella, listeria, mad cow, and common meat-borne diseases - the inherently unhealthy practices (mass crowding, growth stimulants, feeding regimens, rushed assembly lines, poor sanitation, etc.) of industrial-scale meat operations. Upton Sinclair's "Jungle" all over again. NAIS will do nothing to stop these practices. Moreover, tracking ends at the time of slaughter, yet it's from slaughter onward that most spoilage occurs. But NAIS does not trace any contamination after slaughter.
.
The self-serving Agribusiness NAIS plan distracts from their contaminatory practices, while targeting hundreds of thousands of small farms, homesteaders, organic producers, hobbyists ... and maybe even you. NAIS's purpose is to advance corporate monopoly over all food in the US. And with it, they have laid the ground work. Kissinger said if you control food, you can control people. This immense corporate plan to control of our food supply and eliminate our independent farmers is, at it heart, the most severe threat possible to our democracy itself.
.
Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.
.
If you would like to get alerts like these, you can do so at http://www.peaceteam.net/in.htm

. http://www.info rmationclearing house.info/ article21697.htm. Gaza Victims' Burns Increase Concern Over Phosphorus. By Michael Evans and Sheera Frenkel . January 09, 2009 "The Times Online" -- JERUSALEM - Photographic evidence has emerged that proves that Israel has been using controversial white phosphorus shells during its offensive in Gaza, despite official denials by the Israel Defence Forces. . There is also evidence that the rounds have injured Palestinian civilians, causing severe burns. The use of white phosphorus against civilians is prohibited under international law. . The Times has identified stockpiles of white phosphorus (WP) shells from high-resolution images taken of Israel Defence Forces ( IDF)
artillery units on the Israeli-Gaza border this week. The pale blue
155mm rounds are clearly marked with the designation M825A1, an
American-made WP munition. The shell is an improved version with a more
limited dispersion of the phosphorus, which ignites on contact with
oxygen, and is being used by the Israeli gunners to create a smoke screen on the ground. . The
rounds, which explode into a shower of burning white streaks, were
first identified by The Times at the weekend when they were fired over
Gaza at the start of Israel's ground offensive. Artillery experts said
that the Israeli troops would be in trouble if they were banned from
using WP because it is the simplest way of creating smoke to protect
them from enemy fire. . There were indications last night that
Palestinian civilians have been injured by the bombs, which burn
intensely. Hassan Khalass, a doctor at al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City,
told The Times that he had been dealing with patients who he suspected
had been burnt by white phosphorus. Muhammad Azayzeh, 28, an emergency medical technician
in the city, said: "The burns are very unusual. They don't look like
burns we have normally seen. They are third-level burns that we can't
seem to control." . Victims with embedded WP particles in their
flesh have to have the affected areas flushed with water. Particles
that cannot be removed with tweezers are covered with a saline-soaked
dressing. . Nafez Abu Shaban, the head of the burns unit at
al-Shifa hospital, said: "I am not familiar with phosphorus but many of
the patients wounded in the past weeks have strange burns. They are
very deep and not like burns we used to see." . When The Times
reported on Monday that the Israeli troops appeared to be firing WP
shells to create a thick smoke camouflage for units advancing into
Gaza, an IDF spokesman denied the use of phosphorus and said that
Israel was using only the weapons that were allowed under international
law. . Rows of the pale blue M825A1 WP shells were photographed
on January 4 on the Israeli side of the Israel-Gaza border. Another
picture showed the same munitions stacked up behind an Israeli
self-propelled howitzer. . Confronted with the latest evidence,
an IDF spokeswoman insisted that the M825A1 shell was not a WP type.
"This is what we call a quiet shell - it is empty, it has no explosives
and no white phosphorus. There is nothing inside it," she said. . "We
shoot it to mark the target before we launch a real shell. We launch
two or three of the quiet shells which are empty so that the real
shells will be accurate. It's not for killing people," she said. . Asked
what shell was being used to create the smokescreen effect seen so
clearly on television images, she said: "We're using what other armies
use and we're not using any weapons that are banned under international
law." . Neil Gibson, technical adviser to Jane's Missiles and
Rockets, insisted that the M825A1 was a WP round. "The M825A1 is an
improved model. The WP does not fill the shell but is impregnated into
116 felt wedges which, once dispersed [by a high-explosive charge],
start to burn within four to five seconds. They then burn for five to
ten minutes. The smoke screen produced is extremely effective," he said. . The shell is not defined as an incendiary weapon by the Third Protocol to the Convention on Conventional Weapons because its principal use is to produce smoke to protect troops. However, Marc Galasco, of Human Rights Watch,
said: "Recognising the significant incidental incendiary effect that
white phosphorus creates, there is great concern that Israel is failing
to take all feasible steps to avoid civilian loss of life and property
by using WP in densely populated urban areas. This concern is amplified
given the technique evidenced in media photographs of air-bursting WP
projectiles at relatively low levels, seemingly to maximise its
incendiary effect." . He added, however, that Human Rights Watch had no evidence that Israel was using incendiaries as weapons. . British
and American artillery units have stocks of white phosphorus munitions
but they are banned as anti-personnel weapons. "These munitions are not
unlawful as their purpose is to provide obscuration and not cause
injury by burning," a Ministry of Defence source said. . Mads
Gilbert, a Norwegian war surgery specialist working in Gaza, told The
Times that he had seen injuries believed to have resulted from Israel's
use of a new "dense inert metal explosive" that caused "extreme
explosions". He said: "Those inside the perimeter of this weapon's
power zone will be torn completely apart. We have seen numerous
amputations that we suspect have been caused by this." . Copyright 2008 Times Newspapers Ltd. . http://www.info rmationclearing house.info/ article21697.htm.

Many thanks to: . . ----------------- Bulletin Message ----------------- From: Katiedid Date: Jan 7, 2009 6:59 AM In December 2008, president Bush issued regulation that allows anyone in the medical field to deny women routine birth control services. This means, the receptionist can deny you your appointment because it's against his/her morals; this means, the pharmacist can deny you your perscription because it's against his/her morals. It's one of the many things Bush has snuck in before the end of his time in office. Below is a link and a letter. The link takes you to the letter which will be passed on to the Obama Administration. PLEASE take the time to fill in your basic information and they will do the rest. I just can't stand others making decisions that effect my life so tremendously. https://secure. prochoiceamerica. org/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=3369Reverse Bush's final attack Dear President-elect Obama, I am writing to urge you to take a stand against one of President Bush's final acts in office - issuing an anti-choice regulation from the Department of Health and Human Services. The rule is a tremendous step back for women's access to reproductive-health care, including birth control, and you have the power to change it. As you know, the dangerous regulation could undermine state laws that require hospitals to provide emergency contraception to rape survivors. It could allow health-care corporations to refuse services and referrals for birth control. And it could hurt low-income women in particular by allowing family-planning and Medicaid providers - even the receptionists at their front desks - to deny contraception services and referrals to women. President Bush's regulation is radically out of step with the way we live, as 98 percent of women use birth control at some point in their lives. President Bush snuck this regulation through at the last moment. I know you have already stated your opposition to the regulation - thank you! Now, please use your office to repair the damage and help restore women's reproductive freedom.
