Greetings from the Blueline!

Yesterday was a day I've been looking forward to for a long time - almost a year, in fact.  Yesterday (March 28, 2007) was the day that the Greater Cincinnati Blueliners Club delivered the proceeds from the "Teddy Bear Treasury" toy drive to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.  All two-thousand one-hundred thirty nine toys worth of it.

I managed to get to the hospital at about 8:45 AM... not bad considering I use I-471 to get to downtown.  I was met by Cathy, who has been our contact at CCHMC this year with this event, and we unloaded the toys from my can onto a couple of large four-wheel carts.  As we finished unloading my car, Jim came rolling in with the trailer that held the rest of the collection.

Cart by cart, bags and boxes of toys were brought into the Auditorium at the Sabin Education Center.  As they were being unpacked and stacked, we began to understand just how many toys there really were.  You can get something of an idea by looking at this picture, but I'm not sure it really does justice to the sheer volume of toys we were looking at.

Representatives from the area K*B Toys stores, as well as Scott, their District Manager, were there for the delivery.  Meggan, K*B Toys Store Sales and Promotions Coordinator from the corporate offices in Massachusetts came in for the delivery as well.  Coach Hardin and four members of the UC Hockey Bearcats were there as well.

I had received a message the day before that XU's team president was going to be out of town and unable to make the presentation.  Reps from the Jr Cyclones were unable to attend as well.  I never did get any response to my invitations to the Cyclones and the Cyclones Fan Club.  They were both helpful contributors to this drive, but were for some reason unable to attend.  We still appreciate their cooperation, and I know the CCHMC patients who receive the fruit of their efforts will appreciate it as well.

After lots of talking, laughing, picture-taking and hand-shaking, we packed up the toys once again to be taken to Child Life for distribution to patients at CCHMC.  We were all already talking about how we can do even more next year, and I hope that will be the case.

I was tired as I was heading to the elevators to the parking garage, and it was only 11:00 AM.  I was carrying one of the K*B store signs with me, along with my camera, as I entered the elevator.  Just behind me a young lady carrying a toddler got in the elevator too.  I asked her which level she needed, and it turned out she was going to the same part of the parking garage as I.  She saw the sign in my hand and asked me if I work for K*B Toys.  "No," I replied, "I don't.  But, I'm part of the Greater Cincinnati Blueliners Club.  We worked with K*B Toys this February to collect toys for Children's Hospital, and we just finished delivering over 2,100 toys."

She went on to tell me that she had made several trips to CCHMC with her son over his few short years, and how much it means to him (and to her) when he is able to leave the hospital with a brand new toy.

Sure, I'm a little disappointed that our press releases to the local media didn't bring any tv cameras to the event.  Sure, I'm a little disappointed that not all of the organizations that helped us with the effort could be there for the delivery.  But, even if everything else that happened on Wednesday, March 28, 2007 between the GCBC and CCHMC was taken away, that brief conversation in the parking garage elevator between two strangers reminded me exactly why we do this.

And we'll keep doing it as long as we can.  Get ready for 2008... I hope the stage isn't big enough to hold all the toys we can collect.

Greetings from the Blueline!

I spent this morning cleaning out my van (that usually just means taking out all the old White Castle and Taco Bell bags), and removing the seats.  This was so I would have enough room to pack in all the toys I'll be taking to the Greater Cincinnati Blueliners Club "Teddy Bear Treasury" Counting Party at Half Time's (formerly Hippo Joe's) at Sports Plus tomorrow night.

I have been storing toys and bears that we received from all of the hockey games we did this year, plus the donations from Eastgate Mall.  I was afraid it wouldn't all fit into "The Purple Jellybean" as my kids fondly refer to the Dodge Caravan that I drive.  It was mighty close.  One little bag of stuffed toys and a bag of batteries is sitting on the front seat, and I still have a message on my phone that says another couple boxes of toys are coming to me.

Wednesday, March 28 should be a very nice day!

Greetings from the Blueline!

Preliminary results are starting to come in from the Cincinnati area K*B Toys stores about their participation in the 2007 Greater Cincinnati Blueliners Club "Teddy Bear Treasury" to benefit Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.  Just to give you a sample, two of the stores I have been in direct contact with so far had a total of $1,971.44 donated at the registers.  The cash donations at the stores have been used to purchase additional toys at those locations.

I can hardly wait to see everything all together in one place at our Counting Party next week!

Greetings from the Blueline!

My favorite hockey joke ever.... please feel free to comment with yours!
-----

It's game seven of the Stanley Cup, and a gentleman is sitting in the front row, two seats in from the aisle.  The seat between him and the aisle is empty.  The man behind him notices this and thinks it's a bit strange for there to be an empty seat, especially in the front row, for the game that will decide who wins the most important and prestigious trophy in all of sports, but he reasons that maybe someone just had to work late or got stuck in traffic or something.

At the second intermission, the seat is still empty, and it is bugging the guy to no end that there's an empty seat, so he taps the guy in the front row on the shoulder and asks him, "Hey, what's the deal with this empty seat next to you?"

The guy responds, "Oh, that was my wife's seat.  We've been season ticket holders here since before we got married, and we always sat in these two seats, but she passed away suddenly."

The man in the second row pauses and says, "Oh, I'm sorry, I never imagined.... but, I must say, it's strange that nobody is using the ticket.  Don't you have any friends who are hockey fans who would have come with you?"

"No," says the guy as he checks his watch. "They're all still at the funeral."

And THAT'S why hockey fans are the best sports fans in the world!

Greetings from the Blueline!

The Greater Cincinnati Blueliners Club is branching out just a bit.  Our group members are interested in hockey at many different levels.  Some are pure NHL fans.  Some long for days gone by of AHL hockey in Cincinnati.  Some are ECHL fans, supporting the Cyclones.  Some are die-hard Miami Redhawks fans.  Some follow the club teams at UC, Xavier, and/or NKU.  Some are high school or Junior-B fans.  All have one thing in common.  We want hockey to live, and flourish, in this area.

Let's face it... MySpace.com is the Internet's best example of narcissism run amok.  This is where people go to, quite frankly, advertise "Me".  And when two people who are advertising "Me" like the "Me" that someone else is advertising, a friendship can develop.

That's what the GCBC is hoping to take advantage of.  Not just here on MySpace, but at the hockey rinks, sports clubs, and dinner tables around the region as well.  Only this time, the "Me" we are advertising is a group of people who (hopefully, just like you) have a passion for the sport of hockey - at whatever level you enjoy it.

Join us in helping encourage the growth and awareness of the sport of hockey in the Greater Cincinnati area in the coming years!  Don't forget to visit our main site at http://www.bluelinersclub.com for Greater Cincinnati area Hockey News!
