I listen to a lot of albums and I really enjoy my music. So I though this could be new feature that I do on my website and as usual a snippet on MySpace before posting the full article on the 1st of the next month. It's been hard choosing my first album because even though the month has just started I have listened to just over 9 albums on my train rides to Edinburgh but there has been one that has stood out amongst the others.

For those that didn't know, on 1st December I started my brand new job over at Simpson House, Edinburgh. It's a 6 month contract which I've been looking forward too since I got the news when my Granda died and I knew that he would be proud of me. He always said that I would do good in life and I don't want to disappoint so I decided to give 100%.

Crystal Defenders is a tower defence game using worlds and landscapes based on SquareEnix's Final Fantasy Tactics. This game was originally released for mobile phones but it was eventually released on the PlayStation Store with two separate games each for the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Portable. This review is about the version for the PlayStation 3 and is currently priced at £7.99.

Smackdown vs Raw 2010 for PlayStation 3

Smackdown vs Raw 2010 is the best in the series so far with improved graphics, create a story mode, a re-vamped create a wrestler mode and even an improved create a finisher mode. The series still has it's problems but the future looks bright for Smackdown vs Raw.

Story – 7/10
Contining from the success from last years introduction, Road To WrestleMania comes with 5 brand new stories that includes a diva story and a create a superstar story. Each Road To WrestleMaina starts off at the same point after the Armageddon pay-per-view up until the finale at WrestleMaina XXV.

With the introduction of the create a story mode, the players can create as many story-lines as they wish and it's even possible to downloaded more using the community creations section of the online mode. This is a great new feature and really has a lot of potential because players can create and share their own scenarios but there is a downside to this mode; a created superstar can only be used 10 times in the whole story.

Smackdown vs Raw 2010 career mode is the same as last years game and hasn't really proven to much of a use for it other than for trophy hunters. I've always wished for a career mode like in WWE Smackdown 2 but I've never been given wish yet I still don't give up hope. I feel that a decent career mode would help improve the quality of the game. Right now I can't see a point for the career mode unless your a trophy hunter.

Gameplay – 9/10
The gameplay mechanics are pretty much the same since the 2006 edition with a few new improvements. The superstar can now use more moves now as the developers have increased from 2 strong grapples to 4 strong grapple holds therefore allowing for 16 strong grapple moves. The R3 button is now the struggle submission button and this allows for a lot more submissions too from 4 standing and 6 when lying down. New moves have also been implemented and are clearly marked to announce that they are new on the create a movelist mode.

The user interface has also been given a major makeover, all that is visible now is a semi-circle around your superstar known as the momentum meter, there is none for you opponent though(unless your playing local multi-player). This is a step closer to making the game a little more life-like. The reversal system has also been changed and now uses only the R2 button for everything and you are now prompted in when to press it but you do have to be quick so it doesn't un-even the balance of the game which I was happy with because if there's no challenge there's no point in playing.

Now to the matches, there are 2 new types of matches and a lot more upgrades to existing matches. The first new match is a champion scramble match which starts off with two superstars and ends with all six wrestlers in the ring until the time runs out and whoever has latest fall wins the match. The other new match is a mixed tag team match which is simlar to a normal tag match but with teams with a male and female and as part of the rules the male superstar cannot touch the female superstar or the match ends in disqualification. The royal rumble has been greatly improved and now uses new mechanics in eliminating other wrestlers from pressing specific buttons or pressing the button before your opponent. The thing I'm most happy about is in a Falls Count Anyway match the referee comes out of the ring with the wrestlers.

Graphics – 8/10
The graphics are an improvement over last years edition of Smackdown vs Raw which is always nice to see, the character models resemble their real life counter parts in a lot of detail as well as with just the little things like long hair moving about or loose clothing fluttering. The pyrotechnics are a bit plain and could do with a little bit of updating but this is not a major is issue and just this one man's opinion. The audience also look really outdated and is another thing that is stopping this game from being perfect. It's just a wonder how the superstars can be done in so much detail but the people on the audience look to terrible and almost PlayStation 2 graphics.

The developers have tweaked a few things that make the game just that little more realistic. One of these things is the rope rings; they interact with your character that I believe is done using the Havoc game engine. Another cool new tweak is to do with making your opponent bleed. When I first cut open my opponent I was disappointed with the outcome; just a tiny little blood patch on the forehead but it wasn't until I noticed that the blood was transferring to my own player and I could make the cut bigger with tactical strikes to the head and again this just adds a little bit more realism into the game.

Sound/Voice Acting – 6/10
The voice acting and the commentary isn't good but it has improved since Smackdown vs Raw 2009. The road to WrestleMaina (as far as I know) use their real voices from the World Wrestling Entertainment shows but in my opinion there just isn't enough and that makes the scenes feel a little bland at times. The commentary during the matches is implemented quite poorly and there will be times where there is just silence from them for a long period but I do like how they have implemented names of created superstars into commentary.

Other than the voice acting the sounds of the game are great. The cheers from the audience are excellent and now chant the names of the created superstars as well as the original superstars themselves. The only thing I would think would be pretty cool is if the wrestlers themselves could produce sounds like they do in the WWE shows like maybe when they are taunting and yell at the same time.

Overall – 8/10
For what Smackdown vs Raw 2010 is, it really does pack a punch and is without a doubt in my mind, the best Smackdown vs Raw game yet. I would even go as far as saying this is the best wrestling game I've ever played but it is not without it's flaws. Give this game a try.

Summary
Story: 7
Gameplay: 9
Graphics: 8
Sound/Voice Acting: 6
Overall: 8

I really do mean it, I plan on getting everything posted by the end of the year and I'm really going to try and stick do it. I'll also be uploading them onto GameFAQ's website too (except my classic reviews, I see them as exclusive to my site and MySpace). I'm working on Smackdown vs Raw 2010 the now which will either be posted today or tomorrow depending on how late I get it finished, I've also been playing Crystal Defenders which I downloaded from the PlayStation Store and since it's more an arcade game I'm just doing a mini-review on the game.

For December, I have some Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable games under review and (if I get the games) maybe Dragon Age: Origins and Assassin's Creed 2. Of course I plan on releasing all my Classic game reviews on Christmas Day for a present for the people that come to my site and read my stuff.

Thanks for reading people

Ubuntu Karmic Koala, also known as version 9.10 was released on the 29th of October along with it's counterparts (including Kubuntu and Xubuntu) and have a lot of new features to make it a more stable operating system and the best Ubuntu release to date. I've had a lot of time to try out some of it's new feature and just being pretty new to Ubuntu from moving from Windows; I believe that this one of the best operating systems I have ever used. I'm now going to give my views of the operating system and I'll be using screenshots to help explain these things. First, I should note that I was using Ubuntu 9.04 for 3 weeks before I upgraded.

The new default theme and wallpaper.
Ubuntu 9.10 has a range of beautiful wallpapers compiared the the 3 in version 9.04.

The first thing I noticed was the new default wallpaper since I never got around to put my own background on it. It's a bit plain but it's still quite nice to look at and there are a lot more wallpapers to choose from as indicated by the screenshot above which is always a good thing and gives a user a lot more choice to customize the desktop, the user can also use a picture they have on their hard drive too.

The new default human theme is now more darker, it is now brown instead of orange and comes with a new set of icons that really do modernize the feel of the operating system. Although I personally have my theme set as the clearlooks theme while using the human theme icons. There is a bad thing about the new user interface though; the icons in the “System” menu are now disabled by default and this is what I don't like but it can be turned back on very easily through the Appearance settings.

Mozilla Firefox has been updated to version 3.5.3 in Ubuntu 9.10.
OpenOffice has been updated to version 3.1.1 in Ubuntu 9.10.

Ubuntu Karmic Koala comes with much needed updated software with the two big ones including Mozilla Firefox 3.5.3 and OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 which both include a lot of new features themselves as well as bug fixes and increased security. A lot of other software was updated too but I can't comment on all but for my system it was VritualBox OSE and Emesene that were both updated to their most recent version. I also heard that Rhythmbox has also received an update that now fixes the cover art feature but I use Banshee media player so I can't confirm this.

Pidgin has been replaced by the GNOME default Empathy IM

If your doing a clean install then you'll notice that Pidgin has been replaced with the GNOME default IM application Empathy which I personally think was a huge mistake as I believe the Pidgin is a more superior but I'm not the bothered since with Ubuntu I use neither program and instead use Emesene but I do use Pidgin Portable on my flash drive and after the brief 30 minutes with Empathy I concluded that Pidgin is a better application.

The welcome page of the Ubuntu software centre.

Speaking of software; a major new feature of Karmic Koala was the software centre and at first it was not installed by default but I have a feeling it is because I upgraded and never clean installed but I was able to get it easily through the terminal with “sudo apt-get install software-center”. I don't know if this is meant to happen or not but the above command will install it anyway. The software centre is a re-design of the Add/Remove programs application with a easier to use user interface. It's pretty easy to use and even a complete novice will be able to use it. Removing is also easy to do. For more images check out my screenshots in the gallery here.

Now for another big feature that may be over looked by some users; The boot times and the shut down times have been improved greatly. I tested this out on my machine and can safely say that the times, the shut down mostly, have greatly decreased. I should point out that I only have one extra start-up program added to my list and that is Emesene but I don't think that would effect the boot time too much. I'll start with my boot time; it took my computer 1 minute and 2 seconds to boot up into a usable machine and I should also point out of that 13.9 seconds of that time was spent in my BIOS so that means that from when GRUB started loading Ubuntu it only took 48.1 seconds to boot. Now it's time to see how fast the shut down was. It took a whole 6.2 seconds for my machine to shut down. Now that's really fast, back in my Vista days it would take about half a minute.

This is the first splash screen when Ubuntu boots. It is also the breif shutdown splash too
The main splash screen used for the login manager

Ubuntu Karmic Koala now features some tasty new start-up and shut down splash screens which replace the old outdated Usplash. Thanks to the new splash screens are more user friendly for those that are computer novices as there is no confusing text to look at.

There are other new features that are included in Karmic Koala but I can't review them since I would never use them. Ubuntu One is an example of this, cloud computing. It is 2GB of storage space that can be accessed from any computer running Ubuntu and has a connection to the internet. This is something I have no use for because it just sounds like an online flash drive. Two other features included is the introduction of GRUB2 boot loader and the new file system ext4. I really like GRUB2, for me there is no 5 second wait for Ubuntu to load and instead almost instant.

I'm now finishing by linking you to the changelog for GNOME 2.28 which is the desktop that Ubuntu 9.10 uses and brings some new features but again there are none that interest me but anyway you can view the changes here. So thank you for reading my review.

See ya later

I got a new phone this week and I'm pretty excited about it. I've been longing after a new phone since about July this year to replace my old Sony Ericsson W880i which is a great phone in it's own right but it is getting old and the speaker was getting a bit crackly and that is never a good sign. I was going to get another Sony Ericsson to replace it as I have used those brand of phones for the past 5 years but I though it was time to risk another brand. As having experience with PC gaming, it was LG that caught my eye; these guys sell excellent quality monitors so I thought that their phones might be good too.

I looked at a few LG phones but their was one of them that caught my eye. That phone was the LG GW520, I tried googling it but there wasn't too many hits because the phone is quite new (I believe I read somewhere that it was released in June this year but I can't confirm that). The main reason I wanted the GW520 was because of the QWERTY keyboard that would make texting my girlfriend a whole lot easier. So I bought the phone (on O2 of course) and got it the next day.

LG GW520 box

The packaging with the box is the smallest that I have ever saw when buying a phone but it comes packed with the usual AC mains charger, USB data transfer cable, pair of (shitty) headphones and all the documentation from the phone provider and producer. The phone is also included of course which is nicely packaged.

LG GW520 front
LG GW520 keypad
LG GW520 back

The phone itself it pretty easy to use with a touch-screen interface, the screen is very responsive and is 2.8'' long so you should have problem viewing content. The user interface is well organized and easy to learn. Nobody should have any problem finding what they need. The keyboard is the best bit, it looks small and hard to use but I was genuinely surprised when I found how easy it was to type straight out of the box. I will admit though I took my time trying to find the correct punctuation marks.

To wrap up, this is a pretty good phone and it is a not bad price for featuring a QWERTY keyboard. I have no trouble recommending this phone to you guys.

I like Sony because of their PlayStation family and this is because the PlayStation was my childhood console. I used to love playing all different kinds of games, some I really love and some I hated. So I've kept going back to Sony time after time and just to point out; I am not bias in favour of Sony because I'll be the first to say “Sony... you fucked up” and I'm hear to say it again about the newest addition to the PlayStation family. The PlayStation Portable Go; It's pretty neat looking hand-held and has a wow factor with it's features but I think Sony has made a big mistake in releasing it now and I'll tell you why.

I've got the original PSP and I have never though about upgraded to the 2000 or 3000 series because there just the same with a few tweaks that don't matter to me. Then I watch Sony's E3 conference where they introduced the PSP Go and I was thinking the thing I liked the most about it was the slide-out feature but I wasn't too sure about reducing the screen size. Then I started to think, the idea of a hand-held console is portability to I welcomed the new change. Then I heard the console would have no UMD drive and instead use digital distribution through the PlayStation Network. All those UMD games I bought have basically become useless and if I did want to play them I would be forced to play them on my PSP 1000 but in this is circumstance let's pretend my PSP 1000 is broken. There would nothing I could do expect go onto the PSN and buy those games in digital form which too me is just a waste of money.

I like the idea of the PSP, digital distribution is the way to go as it helps bring down production costs and this makes it cheaper, for the consumer, compared to buying a hard copy but why not wait until the next generation of hand-helds that would have been a better time as it would be a fresh start with no hard copy of any games. I really hope that Sony's next generation of hand-helds does follow this method.

Hope you enjoyed reading

Firefox 4 Previews for Windows.

Firefox 4 Previews for Ubuntu.

Well, as you can see the user interface is really different for both the Windows and Ubuntu versions with the tabs on to top of the page and the menu bar has been removed which I've been wanting for a long time now because it just seems to get in the way. At first glance I was thinking “oh it's Mozilla Chrome” but I guess that's not really fair since thanks to Google it got Mozilla off their arse and get cracking and since Firefox is already superior to Internet Explorer they need a new threat. The only bad thing about Firefox 4 is it won't be released for at least another year unless the roadmap changes.

Firefox 3.7 Preview

Firefox 3.7 Previews for Windows.

Firefox 3.7 Previews for Ubuntu.

I'll start with Windows; The newest feature is that the Firefox window now takes full advantage of Windows Aero and my favourite feature is the removal of the menu bar which I've been wanting for a while now. There has also been slight changes to the interface with a page and tools button because of the removal of the menu bar.

For Linux users, like myself, will be treated to a feature that has been available since Firefox 3.0 for Windows and Mac which is the redesigned back/forward buttons. It should also be noted that the icons are now more like buttons too and the ugly toolbar separators are now gone which does make the it look a lot more nicer.

Changes for Windows
  • Embracing Glass: Toolbar and Tabs using Glass. Buttons translucent and slightly glossy to meld with the toolbar. Raised 3D look to achieve tactile "feel".

  • Page and Tools Buttons: Page and Tools on the Navigation Bar.

  • Bookmark Bar: Bookmarks bar on by default. New Bookmarks "widget" containing the bookmarks menu contents.

  • Home Tab: Home tab containing your homepage to start. Expanded functionality planned for 4.0.

Changes for Linux
  • Consistent Back/Forward Buttons: Use the same back/forward shape as on the other platforms. The back button would use the same texture as the other buttons however it would be round and larger.

  • Buttons vs Icons: Switching to a button+glyph style for the toolbar items. This would be instead of the more representational style that is widely used. It also is a deviation from the common system standard of having icons and then a button shape on hover.

  • Curvier Tab Shape: Match the tabs to the proposed tabs on Windows and Mac while keeping the native texture and color.

  • Removing Toolbar Separators: Reduces visual complexity as well as maintaining external consistency.

This is just a quick blog to tell you about my night just yesterday.

I went to see Green Day live yesterday and they put on quite a show. I went with my girlfriend who just loves them and could tell you almost anything about the band. The support act was a band called Prima Donna [MySpace]. My girlfriend liked them but I didn't really think that much of them, they had a few good songs but I wouldn't go out to buy the album or anything like that. Then it was Green Day's turn and the only terrible thing about the show was they made us wait for about half an hour but they eventually came on and put on one helluva show and I could see my girlfriend really enjoyed as did I after the few songs that I've not heard cause I've not been bothered to give their new album a listen too but they blasted out the classics like Basekcase and Minority. My girlfriend took a lot of pictures and if she lets me I will post them onto the site as soon as I can.

Now for a site update, I'll be posting my review of Skate 2 later on tonight, it's almost finished and I'll add the finishing touches to it when I get home. I hope you enjoy reading when it's posted. I'll also be posting a new blog next week for my top 10 games I've ever played which I've put a lot of effort and it took me a long time for choose the games.

Now, I'm going to finish watching House.

See ya
