In Latvia Suede couldn't get in to their release party because they where not on the guestlist.

On the Hultsfred festival in 1995 a band where sitting in their dressing room and suddenly Brett Anderson rush in and ask if they have any drugs to sell. One of the guys in the band didn't recognice Brett and said; "No, but try Suede's room. I've heard the singer does a lot of drugs." Brett looked puzzled and walked out.

Brett's drug days are now behind him. In one interview from then he discussed in great detail a creature he had invented, the Jacquoranda, which has a deer's head and wears a sari.

If you rearrange the letters in 'brett anderson' it can be "tender art snob" or "sent to bernard".

When Brett were on tour his flatmate Alan was going to take care of his goldfish. When Brett came home, he thought the fish had a slightly different colour. It turned out Alan had forgot to feed the fish, so it died, and he was to afraid to tell Brett the truth.

Bernard nearly ran Brett over with his car in 1996.

Debbie Harry was the first person Brett had a crush on and he used to have the hots for Prince.

Brett won 2nd prize in a writing competition at age 7 hosted by the Society for the Preservation of Lindfield:

I have lived in Lindfield all my life. I like living in Lindfield because it has lots of trees and fields. But I would like to see people building not in Lindfield but in big towns where there are slums that are not used. They could be built on. I like Lindfield very much because it has lots of farms and on one of them there are some goats in a field. I think some people should be put in prison because they break down trees and it's all done by teenagers because they think they are so great. I would like only cars to come into Lindfield and no lorries at all. Lorries make Lindfield look horrid because they are so big and smokey and smelly and they make a big noise. I would like the toll gate put back. I would like all the rubbish in the wood to be cleared out and rubbish not to be dumped in the wood. People chop down trees in the wood and I would like them to be stopped.

Brett: - "Indie is just another word for amateur."

Brett: - "Anyone who has got half a brain cell knows that the cat is the closest God ever came to perfection."

Brett: - "Most people bores me to death."

Brett: - "Fame and drugs together make a very psycho cocktail."

Brett: - "I often listen to Suede."
Journalist: - "Most artist don't listen to their own music."
Brett: - "I know. It says a lot about their music dosen't it?"
Journalist: - "Do you dance for yourself then?"
Brett: - "Depends on what trousers I'm wearing."

Brett: - "Adverts shit in your head."

Mat: - "We want to be pop stars, we want to sell millions of records, we want people to hear our music, and we have no interest in being a cult band."

Journalist: - "What does fans most often ask you?"
Mat: - "Where is Brett?"
Simon: - "Where is Brett?"
Richard: - "Is Brett around?"
Brett: - "I don't know. All kinds of things."

Mat: - "There's always been really good songwriters in Suede who just do it like making a cup of tea."

Brett: - "Music is the universal language. Good music is good music."

Brett: - "I'm gonna drink lots of mineral water and get all crazy tonight."

Brett: - "Mat would impersonate me in phone interviews. This character, which was half me and half him, we'd call Brat. The problem was, Mat'd always try and get me into trouble by starting fights with other bands. I remember turning up in Toronto and finding the Bare Naked Ladies were after my blood."

Journalist: - "How do you cope with different opinions in the band?"
Mat: - "Wrestling."

Journalist: - "I have heard that you have a moutainbike, so I bought this helmet for you."
Brett: - "I don't have a mountainbike. I can use it as a flower pot or something."
Journalist: - "Yeah, but just for the right plants."
Brett: - "But you know I won't wear it now, causé black is not my colour."

Brett: - "The ones that chuck themselves at you are the ones you don't want. 'I love you Brett, let me just put my teeth back in!'"

Journalist: - "If you had to choose three things to bring to a dessert island what would it be?"
Brett: - "Three 14 year old indian girls."

Brett: - "We've got a problem: we just can't write B-sides. We can only write great songs."

Brett: - "Been a sex symbol? I'm still good looking arn't I?"

Brett: - "It's easy to sit and moan, isn't it, to sit there going Everything's dreadful. I find the whole idea of being relentlessly grim about stuff is just too easy. I mean, who isn't fucked up? Who hasn't got all these problems? There's not anyone in the world, but it's just too easy to say that. And the tricky part of life, the tricky part of music too, is making something great out of all the shit you have to deal with.

Justine: - "Brett is ridicously good looking, just ridicously good looking."

Unknown 2004: - "I was in a bar in London. At around midnight Brett Anderson walked in with Bernard Butler, I just couldn't believe my eyes."

Swedish journalist: - "Anderson is a very common name in Sweden. Any swedish reletives?"
Brett: - "Not that I know of. But what I think happed was that you vikings came and raped my great grand grandmother, and they had to bury her in a Y-shaped coffin."

Brett: - "I wonder if there's something like true love or if we are all damned to walk the world alone."

Mat to Brett 1981: - "Do you want to be in a band?"

1981

Brett Anderson lives in Haywards Heath 40 miles south of London. He meets a guy called Mat Osman and they form a band called Geoff. Later they changed the name to Suave and Elegant.

1986

Brett and Mat moves to London to study.

1989

They put in an advert looking for a guitarist in Melody Maker and the songwriter Bernard Butler joins on guitar. Later Justine who study architecture just like Brett also joins.

Justine decide the name. The reason of the band name Suede is that it got to do with the tragedy of beauty. It's an animal's skin taken to give beauty to a human. And the aesthetics of the actual letters make it into a graphic symbo. Brett also loves words that starts with an S.

Suede spend about three years playing their songs (from the first album) for few uninterested people in pubs. Their first gigs were horrible and a journalist wrote that Brett "looks like Andy Crane" while the band "look like John Craven".

1990

They start looking for a drummer. One of the first to answer is Mike Joyce, ex-Smith drummer. He also record a single with them called Be My God/Art.

One of the guitarist, Justine Frischmann feels left outside the band and quits. They meet Simon Gilbert who is selling tickets outside ULU and he replace the drummachine.

They sign with the indie label Nude.

1992

Suede is on the cover of Melody Maker with the headline "The best new band in Britain".

In the first TV appearance they perform the single The Drowners on The Late Show.

1993

Suede release their debut album called Suede. On March 29th they came out with this absurd, stylish and mysterious album about surburbia and drugs. They take people with storm with their poprock written by Bernard Butler and Brett Anderson. This is now a legendary cult album. Highest chart position in UK: 1.

1994

Suede release Dog Man Star. This is an avant-garde album about love and depression. They make maybe the most popular record around the fans. Highest chart position in UK: 3.

Bernard Butler and the rest of the band don't get along so well and Bernard leaves. Alls fans are worried because he is one of the two songwriters in the band.

A 17 year old guitarplaying schoolboy called Richard Oakes anwser an add and gets to join the band, tour with them and write songs. Simon's cousin Neil Codling came to visit the studio one day and joins the band ..board.

1996

Suede release Coming Up. The album is a flashy and glamorous record with simple catchy songs. It is a huge commersial hit. Highest chart position in UK: 1.

1997

They release a collection of b-sides on a dubble CD called Sci-Fi Lullabies, filled with beautiful sad songs. Highest chart position in UK: 9.

1999

Suede release Head Music. The album is a more rhythm based record with modern computer sounds. The band for the first time becomes dull and less popular but still bring us oldfashion pop hits. Highest chart position in UK: 1.

2001

Neil Codling suffers from fatique syndrome and has to leave the band.
Alex Lee from Strangelove takes Neil's place.

2002

Suede release A New Morning. The record is quite acoustic, pure and positive. And a big flop. Highest chart position in UK: 24.

2003

David Barnett writes the official Suede biography called Love & Poison.

They release a collection of singles called Singles. Highest chart position in UK: 31.

Suede split up. The split was not because of any fight and Brett says: "Firstly I'd like everyone to know that this decision was based purely on creative reasons. Personally I feel that the only way to escape the artistic dead end I have found myself in is to work at least for a while outside the band. There has been speculation about record sales and chart positions but the bottom line is I need to do whatever it takes to get my demon back."

2004

Bernard Butler and Brett Anderson works together again after 10 years and form a new band called The Tears. The bandname comes from a poem by Philip Larkin, Femmes Damnées, which ends "The only sound heard is the sound of tears".

2005

The Tears release Here Come The Tears. An album with some great melodies. The band don't get so good media attention but the old fans love it. Highest chart position in UK: 15.

2007

Brett Anderson release his debut solo album Brett Anderson. A taking-the-mask-of record, but a bit boring. Highest chart position in UK: 54.
2008

Brett Anderson's second solo album Wilderness is even more boring and he has few fans left. But the album still has some brilliant songs on it of course. Highest chart position in UK: 161.

Lyrics quotes:

...She left some flowers, he smoked for hours...

...Don't you worry, there's a gap in the fence down by the nature reserve...

...Got a kicking transistor inside...

...A static tv stares back at me...

...And she looked kind of strange when she smiled...

...He said he had a horrible house
I looked in and learned to shut my mouth
He said I had the look of a son
With all the love and poison of London...

...Back where the dogs bark,
where still life bleeds the concrete white,
try not to go too far inside your mind
Back where the cars decide,
where the lame star limps an endless mile,
have I gone too far inside my mind?...

...There's a great big crack in the Union Jack...

...And if this kiss dissolves into the past
And if we don't have a future
Just leave your autograph...

...Won't someone give me a gun?
Oh, well it's for my brother
Well he writes the line wrote down my spine
It says "Oh do you believe in love there?...

...Started picking through our conversation and
kicking through the rotting leaves
If you're gone I'll carry on but deep inside
I'll give my heart to the winter...

...When they're counting out the chemicals and doing daily task,
and giving out prescription drugs and putting on their masks,
Would you wander through the grounds to visit me?
As they opened up the gates and turned the key,
Would you please? In the asylum
If they burned my brain away would you understand?
If they tried to hold me down would you hold my hand?...

...you are the dust and I am the rain...

...Take a look inside me, inside my mind
and you'll see my heart is broke in two
'Cos I've seen the real you...

...There's a sadness in your style and there's a madness in your smile...

...If you're far over Africa on the wings of your youth
Or if you're down in some satellite town
and there's nothing you can do...

...I'll sing to the birds who will save my life...

...The city sighs and cars collide...

...And all the lies that you've given us
And all the things that you said
And all the lies that you've given us
Blow like winds in my head...

...She walks in beauty like the night...

...Oh, here they come, the beautiful ones, the beautiful ones
You don't think about it, You don't do without it, because you're beautiful,
And if your baby's going crazy that's how you made me...

...Like big stars in the backseat....

...You and I we want to ride the ocean...

...So much happening today
A thousand people come and go and stay and fade away
They draw the blinds and watch the show
Have you ever been so low?...

...But she and I, we soon discovered
we'd take the pills to find each other
Oh but when she is calling here in my head
Can you hear her calling
And what she has said?...

...It takes everyone, every son, every dad and every mum
Some find a one and a one turns them on, it's money...

...Since you went away
Every night and day
Well, I've just been marking time
I've been staring at buildings and traffic signs...

...He said 'She's not dead, just go away go away' he said...

...Their sad eyes don't cry...

...Planes write your name up in the sky
And flowers die for your suicide
The train stops in vain and the pain stop for you...

...And yes I'm just a stupid guy
Crushed like a butterfly
Dead-eyed at the drive-by in a car...

...I wake up every day, but I don't want it that way...

...You said that we were just good friends
But we jump red lights all the way to the end...

...Come to me softly
Come to me sweet...

...Now my body is sand and the wind blows through me
Like the soil on your hand I am compost and leaves
And my life is gone, darling And now I am free

When your life has gone, darling, and when you are free
When your life is gone, darling, you're words made of sand
so be nothing with me...

...The tears of suburbia drowned the land...

...People push by with fear in their eyes in my life
The telephone rings, but no one ever thinks to speak to me
The traffic speeds by, but no one's ever stopped too late
Intelligent friends don't care in the end, believe me...

...Psycho for sex and glue...

...Life is just a lullaby...
