On Michael Jackson by Louise Palanker
His death was tragic. His life was more tragic. Loving his music will not wish away his flaws. If you’re taking issue with me, this is where you’ll argue, “He was found innocent in a court of law.” Not exactly. He was found “not guilty.” So was O.J. Simpson. So was Robert Blake. The first jury in the Phil Spector trial hung.
It’s difficult asking a jury to take responsibility for the incarceration of a famous celebrity. They are not, after all, “a jury of his peers.” Who among us is peer to Michael Jackson?
Martha Stewart was convicted, but only for lying about securities fraud. A jury would never have believed her capable of murder or molestation.
And so it was that a Santa Maria jury, despite overwhelming evidence, refused to convict the king of pop. (Two later recanted but it was too late.) It’s ironic too, because a conviction could have saved his life. It’s tough to score Diprivan behind bars.
Why do I feel so strongly about this? I am personally acquainted with the young accuser in the criminal trial. He is an excellent young man of 19 right now. I won’t reveal any more about him because he guards his privacy and wants only to live his very productive life.
We have not heard a peep from this family since the trial. They have not filed a civil suit or said word one to the press. This fact seriously undermines the defense theory in the case which painted the accuser and his family as con artists and “grifters.” They are not.
If you love the music of Michael Jackson it is tempting, upon his death, to look away from his “eccentricities” and “personal difficulties.” You want to overlook the half a billion dollars of debt and unpaid bills. (He would have paid it eventually.) You are able to forgive the drug abuse. (His hair caught on fire and he just needs some sleep.) And you want to believe that he was a completely non-sexual innocent who loved sleepovers and never had a childhood. The last part is not possible for me to do. I know too much.
Piles of porn were pulled out of Michael Jackson’s bedroom where he spent the night with boys. There were mountains of straight porn and naked female dolls. That’s how you seduce young boys, most of whom are straight. There was booze everywhere and layers of alarms on hallways and doors which alerted Michael when someone was approaching.
The trial was not televised. Most people find the topic repulsive. They turn away and tap their foot to the music. That’s so much more pleasant. He was such an adorable child, such an amazing artist, such a magical performer. Why can’t we just enjoy that and celebrate this brilliant and beautiful man?
You can if that’s what you need to do. I grew up on the music and I love the music and I suspended my disbelief for as long as I could. However, I was a prosecution witness, and a friend to the young man and I know too much.

I won Scriptfrenzy!

www.scriptfrenzy.org

I finished my christmas screenplay. It's a comedy and quite funny I must say. I had a writing partner for the story outline, Christy Murphy, then she got a case of writers block during the contest and I ended up writing about 85% of it. Still without her contributions it wouldn't have been as good as it is.

Woo hoo! I'm a winner!

I absolutely cannot stop listening to this weekly radio show called This American Life. They have archieved their entire 10 year history on their website and I've already burned through over 2 years worth of them. It is a brilliant show. It's journalistic with interviews and stories and often with people reading autobiographical tales. Some episodes are absolutely hilarious, some political ones get you angry, many have made me cry, but every single episode is touching and eye opening. I cannot recomend it enough.

Episode 368 is the one that got me hooked with the interviews Studs Turkel did with Great Depression survivers. I've never been filled with so many emotions from a radio show listening to their stories.

Some other favorites 109 Notes on Camp, 186 Prom, 323 The Super, 253 The Middle of Nowhere, 333, The Center For Lessons Learned, and 188 Kid Logic.

Go listen! Have it on while you clean the house or sketch and paint like I do.
