Ahh!!! I've been horrible at keeping track of what I've read during these last three months! So much was going on in my life ... in fact, I barely read at all!

Here's the books of July, August and September ... in no order, and I'm sure with a few missing.

1. The Freedom Writers Diary by The Freedom Writers with Erin Gruwell

2. The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

3. Cancer Vixen by Marisa Acocella Marchetto

4. A Bride in the Bargain by Deeanne Gist

5. A Passion Most Pure by Julie Lessman

6. She's All That by Kristen Billerbeck

7. The Appeal by John Grisham

Hmmm... about 2 a month? I guess that doesn't surprise me, since I was finishing an internship, applying for jobs, getting a job, and moving during this time. But I'm pretty sure I read more! I'll edit the post if I think of any other!

So today, I auditioned for American Idol. Yup... THE American Idol. And, 12 hours later ... I'm still standing, but not as one of the future competitors.

But I guess, let's start at the very beginning (a very good place to start) ...

I was copy-editing the paper last week and noticed a piece on the American Idol auditions. I found out they were the very next week, and at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium (the new one in Arlington). And I got excited. And wanted to be involved in the coverage in someway. I mean... it's right down the street and I could get PAID to go!

Somewhere along the line, it got pitched that I could audition and be the "inside man" since the press can't go into the stadium. So ... it was decided. I'd register to audition and spend the day tweeting about the experience.

I got Becky to be my supporter (you could only bring one person for this initial audition), and prayed that my cold/sore throat would go away before this morning. I also had to think of some song choices... fast.

So in a week ... I somehow had to prepare for this. I picked Lauryn Hill's "Tell Him" and I also had "Love Song" as my back-up song.

I wanted to register super early to be able to audition earlier in the day, but that didn't work out (and as I learned later WHEN you registered didn't really bare any weight on your audition time. People who registered THIS MORNING got to audition WAY before me. Which really sucked).

Becky and I get to the stadium around 7:30. People had been there since 5am. Check out the Guide Live blog at  www.dallasnews.com to get vingettes about some of the crazy characters who were there. A guy in a chicken suit (didn't make it); a guy wearing heels, a thong over white jeans, angel wings and carrying a Zac Efron cut-out (didn't make it); a girl in a bumble bee costume (didn't make it); three guys in afros (made it) ...

Tweeting was a blast. I kind of wish I could repost my every tweet on here! But you can go back and check 'em out at www.twitter.com/Guidelive_goes.

Anyway, I was in the last group to go. My throat was dry again and hurting. And I get down and sing (far from my best, even I will admit) and was told... "vocally, in comparison to those who went ahead, I'm sorry..."

Which was funny. Since I should have gone sometime in the middle. Which would have upped my chances probably since 50% of the people who made it through (maybe more) were ushered to the next round all sang in the middle of the day. The producers were hard-core at the beginning and the end of the day.

Simon, Randy, Paula, et all were not there today. Basically, this was a 12 cubicle deal... 4 people to a cubicle. Sing for like 20-30 secs. Get a yes or no. If you get a no, walk the super long walk of shame. If you get a yes, go to another room, fill out some paperwork, get taken back to the audience to do some footage filming, and I think they come back later tonight to sing infront of the Executive Producer.

In the winter/late fall, the big judges (Simon, et al) will come and do what we all see on TV. They will edit bits of today and that day together and make it seem like it happened all in one day.

The process was long, tiring, overwhelming and not really worth it. But I sat around cool people. And got to tweet all day about it. I would do it again, if I had a group of friends who wanted to go. And we'd make it a party.

It's a super contrived process. So I didn't really EXPECT to make it to the next round. But I guess, I won't lie ... it'd have been awesome if I did :)

Where did you begin 2008?
Moving to Chicago! My family drove me to the airport, I flew in and my cousin got me, and I spent the day moving stuff into my tiny apartment and making it my "home"

Were you in school (anytime this year)?
Yup. The WHOLE dang year.

Did you have to go to the hospital?
No... just the clinic. I had the flu.

Did you have any encounters with the police?
haha. not that I can remember. so, most likely, no.

Where did you go on vacation?
I went to San Antonio in May, Dallas in July, Houston in July/August, Florida and Oklahoma in October and Michigan in November.

What did you purchase that was over $500?
Let's see ... if you count tuition for graduate school. That probably would be the only thing.

Did you know anybody who got married?
YES!  I went to 5 weddings this year. Including my sister's.

Did you know anybody who passed away?
Yes. :(

Did you move anywhere?
From Houston to Chicago, and back again.

What sporting events did you attend?
went to a Bulls game!

What concerts/shows did you go to?
Common. And I saw some other random people at this outdoor festival thing. And I saw Stevie Wonder at the Taste of Chicago. ... can't remember any others.

Where do you live now?
Just moved back to the Houston area.

Describe your birthday.
Went to the beach with a highschool friend and her mom. And had some soul food.

Did you get any tattoos or piercing?
Nope

What's the one thing you thought you would never do but did in 2008?
Not sure actually.

What has/have been your favorite moment(s)?
Wow ... um ... my sister getting married, the Tuesday before Daniel's wedding, Becky's visit in June, the special visit in February.

What's something you learned about yourself?
Being isolated sucks. And I love my friends.

Any new additions to your family?
My sister got married, so ... her husband and EVERYONE in his family :)

What was your best month?
Hmm... not sure. No month in particular stood out. But almost every month had a shining moment.

What music will you remember 2008 by?
Nothing I can think of. At all. Hmm... maybe "So Close" by Jon McGlaughin. or however you spell his last name. You know... the song from "Enchanted"

Made new friends?
A few, yes.

Favorite Night[s] out?
... that's a hard one.

Any regrets?
I try not to have any.

What do you want to change in 2009?
I want to finally be an adult! hehe. And maybe have more fun/not be so stressed.

Overall, how would you rate this year?
I'd give it a 7.

What would you change about 2008?
Since I try not to have any regrets ...

Other than home, where did you spend most of your time?
At school

Have any life changes in 2008?
A few.

Change your hairstyle?
Nope. Letting it grow out.

Get a new job?
No. Unless you count becoming a graduate student.

Do you have a New Year's resolution?
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding ..."

Did anything embarrassing?
How much time do you have? The list is endless.

Buy anything new from eBay?
Nope. I've never bought anything on eBay, actually.

What was/were your favorite purchase[s]?
A few clothes here and there.

Get married or divorced?
nope

Get arrested?
no

Be honest - did you watch American Idol?
Nope. Not one second of it.

Start a new hobby?
No. In fact, I had no time to keep up any of my old ones, lol.

Been snowboarding?
no

Are you happy to see 2008 go?
If time never went on what would be the point of life?

Drank Starbucks in 2008?
yep

Been naughty or nice?
I'd say nice. Almost always nice.

What are you wishing for in 2009?
A year full of laughter, love, and contentment.

Two more weeks and I still have no clue what I'll be doing with my life... ... and going back for yet ANOTHER degree is definitely not an option.
