Current mood:  focused
We're gonna have a little break to record some new songs.
It looks like its gonna take till about easter but believe us, please, its gonna be well, well worth it.
In the mean time we might do the odd gig in Manchester or Leeds but until we get rolling again all our attention is on the new demo.
When we get the demo out we'll decorate the page and all that and chuck a manchester academy gig in and give you all a demo for freeeeeeeeeee.
Love,
Austin, Will, Stocky and Eoghan

'Television sharing a cab with Gogol Bordello whilst speeding down Deansgate' would be the best way I could describe The Fayre's annexation of the stage for the fourth and final performance of the night. Amazing renditions of the fans' favourites of 'Linda Boom', 'Rose Queen', and the piercing rhythm of 'Dog Fight' left the crowd screaming for more. The final song Greenhous resorted one fan to get on his friend's shoulders, much to the behest of the bouncers, whom The Fayre tributed a song to. This sarcastic tribute to the authorities suggested that the band are against the already-accepted, against convention, in music and in heart. Which explains their hatred of cover bands and carbon copies of the Arctic Monkeys. The contrasting guitars of Austin and Stocky sent your ears in two different directions, then guiding them back again to meet each other. The main area of focus of the audience was at Austin's voice, which is a very rare find amongst unsigned bands. As was promised, the music was fast, fun, and had a unique tinge to it, which certainly delighted this writer. Although every member of the band left the crowd in awe and in 'Bez formation' upon bended knees, the one who stood out most was Austin. In him is a rare and progressing talent indeed. When asked of his second name, he refused to say: "Just call me Austin". All great bands have a tendency to have a great eccentric as a frontman. Watch out for this four-piece at Glastonbury this year. Where they will no doubt raise the roofs off everyone's tents.

Last on for the night are The Fayre whose jaunty ska-inflected pop is a great way to end the evening. Funky basslines are married perfectly to dancey rhythms and sunny guitars; all this even before the vocals come in! It's good to see a band taking inspiration from different genres and moulding it to create an exciting and listenable sound. It's also heartening to see that they are genuinely enjoying being up on stage, a trait missing in many bands that I've seen recently. If they carry on writing catchy-pop numbers such as their encore, The Fayre will have no problem increasing their fanbase and pushing for a record deal. Sounding at times like a junior version of the Zutons, minus a sexy trumpeter,The Fayre's sense of happiness is infectious and after one last pint of warm beer I head for home a happy man.

The thing that strikes you about The Fayre is that they seem barely old enough to be such seasoned musicians. OK, so it's the in thing to point out how young people are (such as the tiresome 'all ages' bandwagon), but with such precision timing and some wonderfully drawn tunes, surely the world is THE FAYRE's oyster. At the moment their jazzy guitar merry-go-rounds ("Raise The Blinds" / "Lindaboom") delve deep into the 60's for electrifying moments of wired rock and roll and Ska tipped beats. But they can also turn up the wick on some songs and that's when they really do go for the jugular.

Oldham's The Fayre are another act who are taking a purer, much closer look at ska and fusing it to a northern gyspsy style. The wry narratives are crammed with social observations as the guitar, bass and drums lock into each others jerky off-beat stabs. Genuine enough stuff it is too on "Lindaboom", which is cause enough I think, to get them airplay and at least a chance of having it recorded with a producer. The fantastic dubby sounds of "Greenhouse" open up to fluid basslines, just before the band head right into the heart of the 60's with a dizzy mixture of Mod overtones and psychedelic flair. The whole thing's recorded on a bit of a budget (the levels are a bit low on the CD too) but this is a great little EP that deserves so much more than a push as demo – the band should get this out to their public as soon as poss.
