Well, the final drummer auditionee (?) was... very, very good. He seemed like he liked us and our stuff too We are having a full jam with him (and the whole band, rather than just me and Al) on Monday so he can hear the full sound before making a decision on whether to join. Here's hoping! Matt

Well... where to begin. Ed decided to pass on the drum front (he felt he was still too rusty; sad, but likely true) so we have been auditioning drummers. They were: 1) Guy who didn't show up. 2) Adam - this guy was amazing. Too amazing in fact. He wasn't interested in a project which wasn't all ready to go imediately :( 3) Ritchie - a friend of mine who plays in his own band Battle of a Dinosaur. We played together a long time ago and he wasn't really up to scratch for the material then, and sadly he isn't quite up for it now either. This means we have one more drummer to audition, and should he tick the boxes I'll be fucking dancing... because otherwise, we'll have to utilise PLAN B... Plan B.I play the drums. This means Doug plays my parts and Al plays dougs parts while he plays his basslines on the Warr. Sigh. I really like my guitar parts too. Matt

Al recently convinced our mutual friend Ed to have a bash at drumming with us - This excites me greatly, I can hardly wait to hear how our wee ditties will sound with another layer of cross rhythms *grins*
So, to break Ed in and allow us all to gel we have learned a few covers, namely:
Three of a Perfect Pair (King Crimson) - yes, we have actually learned it (even Doug, who has the 'joy' of playing Fripp's part) I may even be able to sing this one, though the 7/8 chorus is a bugger as it is, let alone with the challenge of singing added on top.
Shallow (Porcupine Tree) - Dumb drop-D riff nonsense. Its a fun tune to play (although a little cheesy to listen to imho) but its simple enough to let us focus on important things like band interplay and dynamics. A fun detour away from complexity before we attempt...
Schism (Tool) - Arg! What a bugger this tune turns out to be. Theres something in the realm of 40 time signature changes in its six minute running time, and although I've nailed most them, there remain 2 that fox me EVERY time *rages* However, I don't think I'm suffering as much as the others; Al is having trouble with his chops (too much Warr and not enough bass); Doug has been a touch pre-occupied with his finals (and thus I believe will have a bit of difficulty getting the changes right like myself, though Doug's ability likely surpasses my own when he actually has time to practice so hopefully he'll prove me wrong); and Ed... poor Ed has to tackle 4/4 and 6/4 at the same time (and at times 13/8) while navigating the changes and fills while directing the rest of us after a three year hiatus from the kit. He seems confident though, so I'm confident.
We'll also see what Ed makes of Interlock, the only original tune thats 'finished'.

So, although we've failed to play together for a few weeks, we're going to have a wee jam tonight. And we're inviting two very special guests round to have a listen to our first (nearly) finished tune (which is still called Interlock). What will Ali K (myspace.com/alastairkilgour) and (my, not Ali's) long term suffering girlfriend, Louisa, make of it? Will we manage to finish writing the tune before they turn up? Will we manage to play it through without having to restart every few bars? Will we resort to shouting numbers at Doug? ("4", "7" "no 4 4 4" "NOW") (Sorry Doug, I only tease you as you're probably the most musical out of the three of us and I'm jealous. Matt and I just make up for lack of Dougness by throwing numbers and silly ideas at each other).
Anyway. It should be a good test to see how we're doing. If it goes well, it'll only be a matter of time (probably a lot of time) before we play at an open mic. Oh that'll be fun. Whoever is doing the sound is going to hate us!

Being a stylish lot, last night Cantor embarked on a photo shoot. Forget the fact that we haven't written any complete tracks yet, looks matter people.
And anyway, it was snowing. And it seemed like a good excuse to go outside and be daft.
Practise is scheduled for tonight though: will be interesting to see what we all remember :)

A great first meeting. At this rate, we might actually play a gig this year! So, here's the plan: Work on the 6 tunes below. Then pick the best 4 and play then at a wee secret gig. Probably at Whistlebinkies New Band night. Then see what happens. Oh, and at some point we should meet Matt's friend Sarah who's apparently wanting to play sax and sing. Which will be interesting.
Oh yeah, and we'll hopefully record some clips to splice together for a teaser trailer. Hopefully soon. Maybe even on Sunday. Although Louisa's guitar lesson takes priority.
So, here is a list of the current tunes:
clip3. Or more accuratly clip345. Poor Doug. First he can't count to 4. Now he can't count to 3. Although he can now. See, practise is a wonderful thing. Anyway, we have a nice simple Ebm, Bbm, B, Db progression to do lots of things to. Like all joining Doug with his 3s. I like that idea.
stupidchordprog. Which sounds surprisingly sensible and good. Matt's wrote a B section to it which i look forward to hearing.
interlock. I have to remind myself how the B section goes. And then we all have to sort out a structure. But this is going well. Which is good.
f-mi*. This has rapidly turned from just a bassline in Bb to a really cool part of a song. Am looking forward to modifying my part to fit the guitars.
Europa. Needs a better working title, but I thought this would do for the time being, as it kind sounded a weeee bit like the Europa String Choir. Anyway, I'm going to be on low low bass duties while also playing a high high lead. Should be good practise.
w-arps. Matt's going to try some percussive guitar in a simple 3/4 beat, and also have a think about a nice tappy acoustic guitar break/B section.
See, it's all going well! I'll upload some scans of our notes soon.

At practice today the following was said:
"So... I'll be skipping bars in a diagonal fashion?" - Doug "Its the smuggness of you that pisses me off!" - Doug (to Matt)
Douglas you rascal, you do make me smirk.

Finally.
The fabled "Al and Matt's Side Project That Will Conquer The World (sic)" has come into existence! Its been almost three years to get this far (due in varying degrees to the busyness of life, an extreme prejudice about who we'd allow in the band and a false start in a far rockier direction which gradually dissolved and left us back at square one) but, by the 9 hells, we didn't give up!
I'm aware there's nothing to look-at/listen-to yet, and we still need a drummer (who owns a metronome) and an incredible singer... but fact is, we are still very busy people and we are still perfectionists. When its ready, its ready.
I'll post again when we get some material up...
