Holiday Greetings,

It has been an exciting year for the Coe DNA Project.  With nearly a hundred Coe participants from around the world, we have learned much in 2009.  A total of 55 DNA test results have been completed and posted in the past eleven months.

Thanks to the generosity of Steve Coe from Holiday, FL USA, we have money in the General Fund to keep the project going. Others wishing to make donations, please use this link: http://www.familytreedna.com/group-general-fund-contribution.aspx

For those who have been considering the Coe DNA test, I have good news.  FTDNA just announced an outstanding value on the Y-37 DNA test, which is needed to verify your family line - $119 (reg. price $149).  To order a DNA test kit and join the Coe DNA Project, please use this link: https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Coe

I have a huge favor to ask. My Facebook site with over 2,400 Coe members, hundreds of Coe photos, biographies, etc., is gone!  I’m in the process of rebuilding the site.  Could you please friend request me at this link: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1245456276

Greetings Friends,

A quick update on the Coe DNA Project.

First, DNA results have posted for two Coes in Australia.  They trace their ancestry to Cambridge, UK.  Their results establish another previously unknown branch of the Coe family.  FTDNA could not estimate the Haplogroup for the second test.  Additional testing is being performed to scientifically establish their genetic family. I suspect that many Coes who trace their ancestry to Cambridgeshire share similar DNA.

DNA results have posted for David Alan Coe and Jack Coe who trace their ancestry to Norfolk, UK.  They are a DNA match, and a match with Roger Frank Coe of King’s Lynn, Norfolk, establishing their decent from a common Coe ancestor.  This is a previously unknown branch of the Coe family.  They do, however, share similar DNA with the very large Coe family of Desborough, Northamptonshire.

Initial DNA results posted last week for Gerry Coe of Ireland.  Born at Desborough, UK, it will be interesting and revealing as his 24 and 37-marker results post.

Gene Bethards recently joined the Coe DNA Project.  Not surprisingly, he is an exact DNA match with descendants of Timothy Coe of England and Accomack County, VA USA.  As previously explained, Somerset County, MD USA, court records for the year 1735 were found detailing an affair between local plantation owner Daniel Coe and Elizabeth Bethard.  As a result, Elizabeth gave birth to a son she named Daniel Coe Bethard. He went on to serve as an officer during the American Revolution.  Our DNA project verified paternity of a relationship from 274 years ago.  Maury Povich eat your heart out!

Tommy Orville Coe’s DNA kit arrived at FTDNA this week.  A descendant of Francis Peter Coe of Virginia, he will be only the second member of this family with 37-marker DNA results.  We are anxious for results to post – about six weeks.

Charles Clyde Coe of Ashmont, Canada, recently joined the project.  He descends from Casper Coe (1780-1863) of Albany and Oneida Counties, NY.  The ancestry of Casper Coe is unknown.  Through the Coe DNA Project, we will soon establish his place in the worldwide Coe family.

Judge Harry Lee “Hanging Harry” Coe has been added to the Coe Hall of Fame:
Harry Lee Coe

The project is open to any and all Coes around the world.  We can scientifically establish and verify the Coe family from which you descend.  To join the project and enjoy our 40% discount, please use this link (order Y37 test):

Whew! Coe DNA Project activity continues at a record pace.
Since the last report, we’ve had two DNA kit orders from Coes in Australia; results have posted for one.  DNA results have posted as well for Stuart Coe from Carlucet, France.

Thanks to the kindness and generosity of Susan Coe Brown of Washington, DC, our first Norfolk Coe DNA kit arrived at FTDNA three weeks ago.  Results should post in about a month.

DNA results have also posted for Alan Clemmons Coe of California, a descendant of Suffolk immigrant Robert Coe (1596-1689).

Speaking of which, I recently posted a biography of Robert Coe at the Coe Hall of Fame.  With the biography is a photo of the home he built in Newtown, Long Island, in 1655.  You might want to give it a look:
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1650204&l=00aa0e917a&id=562709570

DNA results have also posted for John David Coe of Texas.  David is the first descendant of William A. Coe (1803-1890) to be tested.  Not unexpectedly, he is an exact DNA match with descendants of Andrew J. Coe (1817-1859) and Isaac W. Coe (1811-1874), all born in Georgia USA. His results lend scientific evidence that the above were brothers, sons of Isaac Coe (1765-1845) of Edgefield County, SC, and Georgia.

DNA results have also posted for John Lee Coe of Iowa.  John has rather unique DNA markers and FTDNA was not able to predict his Haplogroup (genetic family).  More analysis is needed to clarify results.
DNA kits are still outstanding for Tommy Orville Coe of Tennessee USA, Ryan Nathaniel Coe of Nevada USA, Stephen Richard Coe of Swindon UK, Marlan James Coe of Nevada USA, Anthony Thomas Coe of London UK, and Paul Blake Coe of Tweed Heads AUS.   Please send them in soon.  Coes from around the world are depending on your results.
We desperately need more DNA samples from Coes in the UK.  You are the source of our genes.  Without more samples, we will be unable to locate parent families for some Coe branches that have scattered throughout the world.

To get the 40% Coe DNA Project discount, please use the following link to order a DNA kit. The Y-37 test is ideal to help accomplish project goals:
https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Coe

We currently have a willing participant in the UK, but he lacks the funds for a DNA kit. Those wishing to make DNA kits available by contributing to the Coe DNA Project general fund, please use the following link.  Your kindness and generosity are much appreciated (click the link at the bottom left of the webpage):

Greetings Friends,
So busy!  That has been my daily sigh since the last report.
DNA results have posted for Kenneth Sewell Coe of Wesley, AR; Robert Thomas Coe of Palm Harbor, FL; Chad Duane Coe of Parker, CO; and Donald Ernest Coe of Reno, NV.  DNA analysis is expected to post soon for Robert Ashley Coe of Cambridge, UK; John Stuart Coe of Carlucet, France; and Alan Clemmons Coe of Orinda, CA.
DNA kits are still outstanding for Anthony Thomas Coe of London, UK; Robert Joseph Coe of Palm Coast, FL; Marlan James Coe of Fallon, NV; Tommy Orville Coe of Flag Pond, TN; and John David Coe of Winnsboro, TX.  Please send them in soon guys.  We are anxiously waiting to see where you fit in the worldwide Coe family.
Kenneth Sewell Coe is an exact match with other descendants of Samuel Coe (1728-1795) of Calvert County, MD USA. Kenneth’s ancestor William Coe (1757-1833) was tailor to US President Thomas Jefferson. As has been previously discussed, this family is of Haplogroup F, a rare and ancient genetic group.
Robert Thomas Coe is a descendant of Richard Coe (1650-1725) of England and Charles County, MD. His DNA is an exact match with other Richard Coe descendants.  This family has the same DNA as Coes of East Anglia, England.
Chad Duane Coe is a descendant of John Coe (1712-1790) of Kent and Frederick Counties, MD. His DNA matches other John Coe descendants. Although an exact match has not been found with other Coe families, their DNA most closely matches descendants of Timothy Coe (1631-1689) of England and Accomack County, VA.
Donald Ernest Coe is the first descendant of William Coe (1755-1833) of Frederick County, VA, to submit a DNA sample.  Because several Richard Coe descendants were in the area – and other evidence - the conclusion had been drawn that William Coe was a son of John Coe of Prince Georges County, MD, or perhaps his brother William Coe of Fairfax County, VA.  Donald’s DNA suggests otherwise.  His DNA most closely matches project members Chad Duane Coe and Barry John Coe, whose Coe ancestors lived across the Potomac River in Frederick County, MD.  We need additional DNA samples from members of this family to continue the search.
There are now over 1,500 Coes on my Facebook SiteThe Coe Group now has 1,112 members (please join).   The Coe DNA Project Blog has had 11,941 visitors since it was set up.
We desperately need more Coes to participate in the DNA Project, especially from the UK.  Without additional samples, it will not be possible to scientifically find the origins of the many branches of the family that have spread throughout the world.  With your participation we will be able to identify your Coe family origins.
To join the project and order a test kit, simply visit the following link.  The Y-37 test is best to accomplish project goals and correctly identify your family (cut and paste to search window): https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Coe
Thank you for your continued interest and support. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have.
Thank You!

Friends,

First let me apologize for a tardy report and for invading your inbox so close to the holidays. I felt I must get something out before year end. An extremely busy schedule has prevented me from updating you sooner.

Much has happened since the last DNA report.  DNA results have posted for Brad Coe of Manitoba, Canada; Ashley Coe of Alberta, Canada;  and Justin Lee Coe of Michigan/Los Angeles USA.

Ashley and Justin have identical DNA, fixing their place among descendants of the Coes of East Anglia, England.  Brad Coe is an exact DNA match with Martin Coe of Michigan USA, a descendant of the Coes of County Wicklow, Ireland.  Just a genetic marker or two distant from Coes with origins in East Anglia, it appears that the Coes of Ireland also originated in Essex/Suffolk, England.

DNA results should be available soon for Kenneth Sewell Coe Jr. of Wesley, AR USA; Robert Ashley Coe of Cambridge, UK; Anthony Thomas Coe of London, UK; Tommy Orville Coe of Tennessee USA; and Marlan James Coe of Nevada USA.

We need more UK Coes to participate in the DNA Project.  This is our best hope to document both your family and Coe family lines that have spread throughout the world.

Family Tree DNA is offering a special discount on their 37-marker DNA test.  The normal price for the test is $259. With the Coe Family DNA Project discount and the holiday special, the extended test is now just $119.  This is an outstanding value!

To lock in the special price, please order directly from the FTDNA website at Coe DNA Kit or send me a note and I'll lock in the special price and have a kit sent to you. I truly need your help. The special ends soon.

There are now 1,332 Coes from around the world on my Facebook site.  If you haven't been there, please give it a look: Coe Facebook Site.

I recently uploaded an album of family photos at the site.  If you'd like to see what we look like, you can access the album here: Coe Photo Album.

To review Coe DNA results to-date, please use this link: Coe DNA Results.

Thank you for your interest and support over the course of the year.  I wish for you and your family the very best of the holiday season.

Happy Holidays!

Dear Friends,

Coe Family DNA Project activity has been at a record pace during the month.  Results have posted for Norman Gladden Coe of Baltimore, MD USA; Aaron Alexander Coe of Annapolis, MD USA; and Charles Thomas Coe of Billings, MT USA. Anthony Thomas Coe of London, England, and Wilfred Bradley Coe of Manitoba, Canada, recently joined the project.

Very exciting are Norman Gladden Coe's results.  He is an exact DNA match with the Coes of Desborough, Northamptonshire, England, and Elmer Douglas Coe of Indianapolis, IN USA. Why is this important?  It confirms that Joshua Coe who married Rachel Paul, Oct. 26, 1784, in Caswell County, NC, was a son of William Coe (1720-1782) and Susanna Harriott of Baltimore. Elmer is a descendant of Joshua Coe. Norman is a descendant of Joshua's brother William Coe Jr. of Baltimore. Additionally, Norman's results confirm that William Coe Sr. of Baltimore was a scion of the Coes of Desborough.

Aaron Alexander Coe and Charles Thomas Coe are an exact DNA match.  They descend from Richard Coe (1650-1725) of England and Charles County, MD USA. They are Haplogroup R1b1, the most common in the Coe family.  We also have Coes of Haplogroup I1 and Haplogroup F.

They have several DNA matches in the Coe data base, all descendants of Richard Coe. They also have several 1 and 2 marker distant relatives.  The latter are descendants of Robert Coe (1596-1689) of Suffolk, England, and NY USA; John Coe (1588-1650) of Suffolk, England, and CT USA; and Edward Coe (1730-1790) of SC.  These men all have roots in East Anglia, confirming their East Anglian heritage and placing them among descendants of the family of Sir John Coe (1340-1415).

Does anyone remember "The Crime of the Century"?  Wealthy and gifted Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb of Chicago's exclusive Oak Park were convicted of murdering fourteen- year-old Bobby Franks, May 21, 1924. Their motive was to prove that exceptionally intelligent people such as themselves could get away with murder: The Crime of the Century.

Defended by Clarence Darrow, they were convicted on the testimony of Almer DeWitt Coe, founder and president of Almer Coe & Company, who made the glasses that accidentally fell from Leopold's pocket and were left at the crime scene: Almer Coe Glasses.

Born here in Union County and a cousin of US President George W. Bush, Almer Coe became quite prominent through his chain of jewelry and optical stores.  I have added him to the Coe Hall of Fame. You will find his biography fascinating: Almer Coe Biography.

There are now 1,124 Coes from around the world on my Facebook site: Coe Facebook Site.  There have been 8,902 visits to the Coe Family DNA Project Blog: Coe Family DNA Project Blog.  If you haven't visited the sites, please give them a look.

We need more Coes to submit DNA samples.  It's very easy . . . a simple cheek swab.  To join the Coe DNA Project and take advantage of our 40% group discount, please use this link: Order Coe DNA Kit.  For more information and to review Coe DNA results posted to-date, please see: Coe DNA Results.

Friends,

The past month has been busy for the Coe DNA Project. DNA samples for John Talbert Coe of Florida USA, Aaron Alexander Coe of Annapolis USA, Charles Thomas Coe of Whittier, CA USA, and Norman Gladden Coe of Baltimore USA were received at FTDNA for analysis. I just received notice that Anthony Thomas Coe of London, England, ordered a DNA kit. Results for the group should start posting soon. As always, I will keep you updated with details.

I have posted a new photo and bio at the Coe Hall of Fame.  I think you will find this one especially timely and interesting.  Many here in the US and perhaps across the world have been reading and seeing on the news of efforts to save and expand the Florida Everglades.  What you may not know is that the father of Everglades National Park was Ernest Francis Coe (Ernest Fancis9, Edward8, Walter7, Levi6, Thomas5, Robert4, John3, Robert2, Robert1).  Ernest Coe's English/American ancestor was Robert Coe (1596-1689), 1634 Puritan emigrant from Boxford, England, to Massachusetts. The National Park Service recently dedicated the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center in Everglades Park.  You can read more on Ernest Coe and his efforts to preserve this precious world treasure here: Ernest Francis Coe Biography

For the first time I would like to recommend for your reading two outstanding Coe books.  The first is "Chronicles of the Coe Colony" (Burkesville, KY: Xerxes Publishing, 2007) by Samuel S. Coe.  I first read this book in manuscript form from a copy on file at the Glasgow Public Library in Barren County, KY.  Wow . . . what a story!  Samuel Coe, whose father was born on the Coe Plantation at Coe, KY, chronicles his family's trials and tribulations at the hands of a few local ruffians after the American Civil War. This book would make an amazing movie. A new printing is available for the first time since 1930 and can be acquired at Amazon.com: Chronicles of the Coe Colony

The second is a related book: William Lynwood Montell's "The Saga of Coe Ridge" (Knoxville, TN: University of Tennessee Press, 1970). Noted historian Lynwood Montell narrates the story of both the Coe slaves and Coe family that brought them from North Carolina to Kentucky in 1809.  Many American Black Coes trace their ancestry to this family and the property known as Coe Ridge given to them by their former owners at the close of the Civil War. Each Memorial Day descendants gather on Coe Ridge on the Tennessee/Kentucky line to celebrate their heritage and renew family bonds.  This outstanding book can also be acquired at Amazon.com: The Saga of Coe Ridge

We desperately need more Coes from around the world to participate in the DNA Project.  We have DNA samples from most branches of the Coe family in North America, the majority of which trace their ancestry to East Anglia.  There is a good representation of Coes here who trace their ancestry to Desborough, Northamptonshire, as well.  We need more international samples to help identify the origin of other families, plus document for posterity as many branches of the worldwide Coe family as possible.  Project goals are simple but lofty: "To scientifically identify and document all Coe families of the world."

To join the Coe DNA Project and take advantage of our 40% group discount, please use this link: Join The Coe DNA Project

Thank you for your continued interest and support! And a special thank you to James Delano Coe of Bloomington, IL USA, for his recent donation to the Coe DNA Project General Fund. His kindness and generosity will help others identify and document their family origins.

Thank You,

Carl Robert Coe

Friends,

Much has happened since the last DNA report.  DNA results have posted for Henry Strother Coe III of Virginia USA, Roger Norman Coe of South Carolina USA, and Charles Edwin Coe of Texas USA.

Henry is a descendant of Samuel Coe (1728–1795) of Calvert County, MD USA. He is a match with other Samuel Coe descendants. Samuel's son William Coe of Annapolis and Baltimore was tailor to US President Thomas Jefferson. As has been previously communicated, this family has rare and unique DNA.

Roger Norman Coe is a descendant of Richard Coe (1650-1725) of England and Charles County, MD USA. He is a match with other Richard Coe descendants and with the Coes of East Anglia. Roger's ancestor Richard Coe, who was born about 1650 in England and immigrated to Charles County, MD, about 1675, was Tax Constable of Charles County from 1708 to 1720.

Charles Edwin Coe is a descendant of Edward Coe (1730-1790) of South Carolina. He is a match with other Edward Coe descendants and with the Coes of East Anglia.  He is the first descendant of James Alexander Coe (1838-1906) to be tested.  James Alexander Coe was an officer in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, was later sheriff of Henry County, AL, and was married to a cousin of US Vice President William Rufus King.

Roger Norman Coe and Charles Edwin Coe are an exact DNA match, although they are unrelated in this country for ten generations. This is one of the fascinating benefits of what is possible through DNA analysis. Scientifically, we can determine that they descend from a common East Anglian ancestor.

There are now over 830 Coes listed at my Facebook site, mostly from the UK.  If you have not yet joined, please give it a look: Facebook Link

I have added author, politician and celebrity Charles Francis Coe to the Coe Hall of Fame.  I have seen Charles Francis Coe books over the years, but was unfamiliar with the man behind the byline. US Navy boxing champion, he became America's celebrity de jour in the 1930s as a top selling author, radio announcer and ringside commentator for major boxing events. He was vice president and general counsel of the Motion Picture Producers & Distributors of America, Inc., editor of the Palm Beach Times, campaigned for David S. Ingalls of Cleveland for governor of Ohio in 1932, and ran for US Senator from Florida in 1940. He was a close friend of Republican presidential candidate Wendell Willkie and after Willkie lost to Roosevelt in November 1940, he and Charles Francis Coe flew to Florida together to "fish, read, loaf, and forget about politics." Fifteen of Charles Francis Coe's books are kept in the Library of Congress: Charles Francis Coe Biography

Coes from around the world continue to join the Coe Family DNA Project.  Aaron Alexander Coe (descendant of William Coe [1727-1792] of Fairfax County, VA)'s DNA kit arrived at FTDNA in Houston this week. Results should post in about six weeks.  I understand Norman Gladden Coe of Baltimore has a kit and will be sending it in soon.  His father, noted jockey Norman Gladden Coe Sr., is listed in "Ripley's Believe It Or Not." And we have word from Atlanta that a descendant of Stephen Coe (1775-1830) is willing to submit a DNA sample.

Did you see Kevin Coe on "Dateline NBC" Sunday evening? His father Gordon H. Coe was managing editor of the Spokane Chronicle. He is the protagonist of the 1991 movie "Sins of the Mother," in which Dale Midkiff played Kevin and the late Elizabeth Montgomery played his mother Ruth Coe.

A special thank you to John Coe of Nokomis, FL, for his memorial donation to the Coe DNA Project fund.  His kindness and generosity will be used to help fund future DNA tests. Others wishing to donate should use this link: Coe DNA Project Fund

To join the Coe DNA Project and get our 40% discount, please remember to have candidates use this link: https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Coe

Friends,

Hope you have been enjoying better spring weather than we have been here in Ohio.  It has been the coldest and dreariest spring in memory (and I've had a few!).

We have new DNA test results to report.  Anthony Carlton Coe of Kensington, MD, results have posted.  He is a match with William Stephen Coe of Holiday, FL USA.  Not surprising in that they both descend from William Coe of Baltimore MD USA, tailor to US President Thomas Jefferson.

What is unusual is their DNA.  They match no one else in the Coe data base.  Most people with their DNA live in Georgia on the Black Sea. We need more samples from this family, from more UK Coes as well to establish a link.

I hope that you took advantage of the Facebook link I recently sent.  It has proven to be a wonderful vehicle for making contact with Coes from around the world.  More than 300 Coes from South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the US, have signed up.  If you've not yet joined, please join us:  Facebook

Our obsession with being the very best at what we do has propelled members of the Coe family to excel in many areas of human endeavor.  Boyer Coe brought immeasurable honor to the name in the 1980s with accolades of "Mr. Olympia," "Mr. Universe," "World Body Building Champion," and eventually "World's Best Built Man."  At the 1981 World Body Building Championships he became the only person to ever receive a perfect score, defeating fellow competitor and body building icon Arnold Schwarzenegger and a host of other immortals.

As Britain's Sebastian Coe shattered world record after world record (twelve total), and received gold medals at the 1980 and 1984 Olympics, the world crowned him with the title of "World's Fastest Man."  For an outstanding documentary of his amazing life and achievements, including interviews with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Peter Coe of Sheffield, please watch "Born to Run." Here's a link (six segments):  Sebastian Coe – Born to Run

I have uploaded videos of Sebastian Coe winning the 1500M gold medal at the Moscow Olympics and Boyer Coe's 1984 Mr. Olympia presentation at: Coe Videos

For photos and biographies of 36 famous Coes (updated), please visit the Coe Hall of Fame at The Coe Group.  While you are there, please join the group: Coe Hall of Fame

I need your help.  We have Coes in Huntsville, AL, and Manchester, England, who would like to participate in the DNA project but are short of funds.  We have a system through FTDNA to assist.  Would you consider donating to the project fund to assist with situations like this?  You can use your credit card or PayPal to donate. Future generations will benefit from your generosity. I'll watch the fund.  As soon as money is available, I'll have DNA kits sent to the above Coes. Here's the link:  Donate - Coe Family DNA Project

Some have asked how UK Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill is related to the Coe family.  Here's his line of descent: (Sir Winston Churchill9, Jennie Jerome8, Leonard Walter Jerome7, Aurora Murray6, Sarah Guthrie5, Abigail Coe4, John Coe3, Robert Coe2, Robert Coe1 1596-1689 ).

Did you happen to see Doug Coe on the NBC Evening News Thursday evening?  Head of The Family or The Fellowship, he has been referred to as "The Most Important Man on the Planet"  Doug Coe – NBC Nightly News

For a biography of Douglas Evans Coe,  please see: Douglas Evans Coe Biography

We desperately need more Coes from around the world to participate in the DNA Project. Our goal is to scientifically identify and document all worldwide Coe families. You will receive a 40% discount by using this link to join the Project: Join Coe DNA Project

Ahoy Coes of the World,

I have some updates and information.

First, James Joseph Coe’s DNA results posted this week.  He has one Coe match in the DNA universe . . . Robert Edward Coe of Toms River, NJ USA.  Both descend from William Coe (1730-1782) of Baltimore, MD USA.  We desperately need more participants from other branches of this family.

Anthony Carlton Coe of Kensington, MD, has submitted a DNA sample.  He descends from Samuel Coe (1727-1795) of Calvert County, MD USA.  This is very important as he is only the second person from this Coe group to submit a sample.  The other person came back as a member of "F" Haplogroup, one of the rarest DNA families.  Most persons of this DNA group are located in Georgia (country, not state) on the Black Sea.  We very much need more participants from this family to confirm results.

I have created an online Coe Hall of Fame. Posted are 31 photos and bios of famous Coes.  They range from Sir Winston Churchill, a descendant of Robert Coe (1596-1689) of Boxford, Suffolk, England, and Newton, Long Island, NY USA; to Mr. Olympia, Mr. Universe and World Body Building Champion Boyer Coe, a descendant of Timothy Coe (1631-1689) of England and Accomack County, VA USA. Drag your cursor across the photos or click on them to read the bios:  Coe Hall of Fame

I was not able to test the link.  You may need to enter an email address and password to view it.  Please don’t be concerned if one is requested.  It’s well worth the effort and no spam will come your way from signing up.

To encourage additional participation in the Coe DNA Project, I have a special offer.  For everyone who submits Coe DNA during the month of March, I will send a copy of the award winning book "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia" (Columbus, OH: 2002), two volumes, 1467 pages; or "Robert Coe, Puritan, His Ancestors and Descendants, 1340-1910" (Boston: 1911), 654 pages. "Robert Coe, Puritan" is a fairly complete history of the Coe family of East Anglia, England, and their descendants in the US.  "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia" is a thorough record of American Coe families not included in "Robert Coe, Puritan."

The books will be sent in their original format, with photos, maps, etc., on every-word searchable, professional quality DVDs.  The DVD of your choice will be sent free and postage paid as soon as confirmation is received from FTDNA that the DNA sample has arrived in Houston.  "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia" sells in printed format for $199, plus postage.  "Robert Coe, Puritan," in rough, photocopied, paper cover format, sells for $97, plus postage, at Higginson Book Company.

Spread the word.  This is possibly the most important Coe family project ever undertaken.  To view Coe DNA results posted to-date, please visit: Coe DNA Results

Friends,

I have Coe DNA news to report.

The first Baltimore Coe DNA results posted in January.  Rather than clarify origins of this branch of the Coe family, it has caused us to scramble for additional DNA samples. There was just one person in the DNA universe who matched his DNA; a gentleman in Finland named Kari Lindström. We desperately need other samples to verify results.

It is possible this family belongs to the Northamptonshire, England, Coe group.  His Haplogroup is I1a, as are Northamptonshire Coes; of possible Viking origins.  But he is four markers off from other Coes tested with Northamptonshire origins.  If you are one of those who have recently been contacted about submitting a DNA sample, please consider joining us.  We really need your help.

DNA results posted for Donald Earl Coe of Kansas City today.  He has two matches in the Coe DNA data base – Grahame Ronald Coe of Gestingthorpe, England, and Robert Hunter Coe, whose grandfather Herbert H. Coe immigrated to the US from Teignmouth, England, by way of South Africa, in 1906.

James Joseph Coe's DNA kit arrived at FTDNA yesterday.  Results should post in about six weeks.  Hold onto your hats.  Perhaps new mysterious will need solved.

I had the honor of attending Carlie Fay Coe's funeral in Glasgow, KY, in January.  A tenth generation descendant of Timothy Coe of Accomack County, VA, he owned a cattle farm just outside of town.  You've heard me say "I've never met a Coe I didn't like." Carlie exemplified that sentiment. I loved his farm, his cattle, and especially him. He will be missed!

Following is a link to photos I took at the cemetery:  Glasgow Cemetery

Here is a link to a video played at Carlie's funeral:  Carlie Fay Coe Video

Pass the word.  The project is open to all Coes around the world.  The goal is to scientifically identify and document Coe family origins and branches. To join the Coe DNA Project, please click this link: Join Coe DNA Project.

Friends,

If you are anything like me, you cannot believe that it's the year 2008!  How did this happen?  If I truly want to leave this world a little better than I found it, I need to get busy!

The mystery of Keith William Coe of London, England, has been solved. As you will recall, Keith shares the same DNA as descendants of Francis Peter Coe in the US.  I thought we had found the missing English link to one of the largest Coe families in America.  With three sons and three daughters (Jacob Coe, William Coe, Pearson Coe, Sarah Dunning, Mary Elder, and Anna Shelton), Francis Peter Coe descendants now comprise one of the largest Coe groups in North America.

Surry County, NC, where son William Coe settled in 1805, contains the highest concentration of persons of the Coe name of any county in the US.  The name has permeated every aspect of Surry County life. At one time the county had a town and post office of the name near Pilot Mountain (of Andy Griffith Show fame), later served by Mayor Joseph Henry Coe. Paintings by Pauline Coe grace the walls of the courthouse at Dobson. Members of the Coe family have served from Surry County during the War of 1812, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and Vietnam. Nearly three hundred Coe marriages are recorded at the Surry County courthouse. Since 1914, when records first began to be kept, 333 Coe births and 147 Coe deaths have been recorded in the county. Currently, more than sixty Coe families make their home within county boundaries.

Keith Coe's father Waldo William Coe was born in Surry County in 1939.  Raised in Winston-Salem, where his father was vice president of Wilson-Covington Construction Company, Keith has been in London the last eight years on business.  Mystery solved.

Robert Edward Coe, a descendant of William Coe (1730-1782) and Susannah Harriott of Baltimore, MD, has submitted a DNA sample for testing.  Results should be available about the end of January.  This is exciting in that he is the first William Coe descendant to submit a DNA sample.  This will help establish where the Coes of Baltimore fit within the greater worldwide Coe family.

Robert Joseph Coe of Florida USA joined the Coe Family DNA Project in December.  Likewise, he will soon learn where his DNA fits within the Coe family. To view and compare DNA results submitted to-date, please follow this link: Coe Family DNA Project.

Your interest and support are much appreciated. Please share information on the project with others. To join the project and submit a DNA sample, please have them use this link:  Join Coe DNA Project

Saturday, November 03, 2007

Friends,

Like you, I woke up Thursday morning and it was November.  I'm not sure how that happened, but I'm stuck with the reality of the matter.  It is just 52 days until Christmas and less than 60 days until the year 2008!

Again I must offer apologies for a long overdue report.  Progress continues on the Coe Family DNA Project.  The same as most of us these days, other matters make demands on my time.

Since the last report James Clay Coe, Robert Hunter Coe and Johnny Duwayne Coe's DNA results have posted, and Michael Moreno Coe's results should post in a few days.  A descendant of Richard Coe (1650-1725) of Charles County, MD, Jim's DNA is a perfect match with other Richard Coe descendants in the project.  He is the first descendant of Richard Coe's grandson William Coe to be tested. The results comfirm the fact that John Coe (1716-1763) and William Coe (1727-1792) of Charles County, MD, were brothers.

Robert Hunter Coe's grandfather Herbert H. Coe immigrated to the US from Teignmouth, England, by way of South Africa, in 1906.  The results of his DNA test indicates that he is closely related to the John Coe (1600s) family of Stradishall, Suffolk.

Johnny Duwanye Coe is a descendant of Richard Coe's grandson John Coe (1716-1763). Interestingly, he is an exact DNA match with Floyd Coe of Des Moines, IA, and just one marker off from James Allen Coe of Jonesboro, IN. This is of interest in that Floyd and Jim's Coe ancestry has not been discovered.  Floyd's grandfather was reportedly born near Cincinnati, OH.  Johnny's family came from just east of Cincinnati.

Michael Moreno Coe is a grandson of Florida State Senator and Pensacola progressive attorney John Moreno Coe.  Featured in Sarah Hart Brown's groundbreaking book "Standing Against Dragons" (Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 1998), NOW president Bella Abzug said of John Coe: "You must know that your ability, courage, and strength can only be likened to an oasis in a desert . . . For me as a young person, comparatively inexperienced both in the ways of the law and in the ways of the world, my contact with you was a rich thing from which I gained much inspiration and courage."

John Moreno Coe was a great grandson of Major Jesse Coe (1782- 1859) of "Coe's Addition," Worcester County, MD, and "Toney" and "Mt. Pleasant" plantations, Gadsden County, FL.  In 1835 he purchased the Apalachicola Indian Reservation from Chief Yellow Hair and went on to build it into a 4,485-acre cotton plantation, one of the largest in the state.  He was a gg grandson of Timothy Coe (1631-1689) of Accomack County, VA.

We are still making progress. We have a commitment for a DNA sample from Robert Edward Coe of Toms River, NJ.  A descendant of William Coe (1730-1782) of Baltimore, MD, this will help close the DNA gap on American Coe families.  He will be the first member of the Baltimore Coe family to submit a sample.  Hopefully, we'll soon know how this branch of the family fits in with others.

The Coe Family DNA Project data base has become the repository for Coe DNA from around the world.  For generations to come, Coes will be able use what we have started to scientifically establish and verify their family heritage.  Visitors as of today to the Coe Family DNA Blog: 5,353.  To view and compare DNA results submitted to-date, please follow this link: Coe Family DNA Project.

Your interest and support are much appreciated.  If you know of someone who would like to submit a DNA sample, please have them use this ink: Join Coe DNA Project

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

                 James Paul Coe

This week marked the 85th birthday of James P. Coe, born September 10, 1922, at York Center, OH, ninth child of James Franklin and Carrie Leach (Bowers) Coe of Milford Center.  He started school at the old schoolhouse in Peoria and went on to graduate salutatorian of the 1941 Rosedale High School graduating class.

Awarded an engineering scholarship to the University of Chicago, he enlisted with the 235th Combat Engineers, 13th Army Airborne and served honorably as a demolitions expert in the Philippines during WW II.  He was with the Japan Invasion Force under General Douglas MacArthur when Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed. He returned home and married June 2, 1948, at Grace Chapel Church, Ruth Louise Andrews, oldest daughter of Harvey Francis and Grace Odell (Russell) Andrews of Middleburg.  They have six grown children.

A retired farmer and 28-year veteran of The Scotts Company, he sold his farm near Raymond to the State of Ohio.  It is now part of the 8000-acre Honda of America Mfg complex that produces Honda Accords, Civics, CRVs and Acura RDXs and TLs.  Within seven years of construction the site was producing the best selling car in North America, the Honda Accord.

Still going strong and enjoying life to its fullest, he has lived on Brown School Road since leaving the farm.  Please join me in wishing him a happy 85th birthday!  He is a ninth generation grandson of Timothy Coe, who was born in England in 1631 and immigrated to Northampton County, VA, in 1652.

Coe List,

Here's something you might enjoy.  Over the years I have collected hundreds of Coe photos, dating back to the 1840s.  Always interested in sharing what I have learned and collected, I have posted a new photo album at my website. It is titled "Richard Coe Descendants."

The album contains over one hundred photos of Richard Coe descendants.  As you know, Richard Coe (1650-1725) immigrated to Charles County, MD, in the 1670s.  With a plantation near Lower Cedar Point and a member of William & Mary Parish Church, he served for years as Charles County Tax Constable. DNA analysis indicates that he was a member of the large Essex/Suffolk, England, Coe family and likely a descendant of Sir John Coe (1340-1415) of Gestingthorpe, Essex.  Descendants share the same Coe DNA as descendants of Robert Coe (1596-1689), Puritan immigrant of 1634 to Watertown, MA, and John Coe (1588-1660), 1640 immigrant to Stamford, CT.

My intention is to segregate the photo collection into albums of early American Coe immigrants and post them for all to enjoy.

Please click on the link at the end of this paragraph. In the upper left corner of the website you'll find a photo of yours truly.  Click on the link under my photo titled "Pics."  Once inside "Pics," select the album titled "Richard Coe Descendants." Wallah!  Enjoy!  The album titled "My Photos" contains over one hundred photos of Timothy Coe (1630-1689) descendants. Here's the link: http://www.myspace.com/carlrcoe

One last item.  Do you have old Coe photos?  If so, I'd love to have a copy.  I promise they will be well cared for and shared with others.

Thank You,

Carl Robert Coe
