For the next two weeks, there is a good chance I will be x-posting my entries across social networking sites. If you see two entries by me with the same title, they are likely the same entry.
HOLY CRAP. All my complaining and being freaked out and moments of PANIC have led to this home stretch:
I have 10 days until my thesis is to be handed in: It's due at noon, December 10th. And to make this even more scary, I have a super hard final the day before my thesis is due, so in 9 days. Eek!
That means for the next 10 days, you'll be seeing entries like this one. AHhhhhhhh
I've printed out daily schedules, hour-by-hour for the next 10 days, in hopes of actually *gasp* finishing my semester. With all this stress, I've been having really intense nightmares, sometimes several in one night. In the most memorable one, I was attacked by dozens of dragonflies. They were relatively normal in size, but for some reason didn't like me. They'd land in my hair, fly straight towards me, and generally freak me out. I remember beating them with a chair, the only thing nearby. Of course they are much smaller than chairs, so it was ridiculous. I remember hitting them away with my hand and feeling their strange scaled bodies and multitude of gripping legs.
I usually don't have a problem with dragonflies, fact, two weeks ago I had one appear in my apartment, and I tried to save it from my pouncing kitties, but it died shortly later. I saved the dead creature until I could get it in a jar and give it to my friend, Flannery. She's a fan of bugs, and I thought it would get more attention in her office than anywhere else. I ended up carrying this baby-food jar, sans label, with a dead dragonfly in it for at least two full days before I actually got it into her hands. She seemed pleased.
More panic to come soon! Whee!
Wish me sanity and hard work, for I am in desperate need of both!

I will not tolerate someone attempting to take my rights away. MY right to marry my girlfriend of 6 years, MY right to be happy, MY right to choose a mate based on how much I love them, not what genitals are in their pants. So, officially, I'm making a request to my friends list, for all of you in the States: If you are my "friend" and voting Yes on Prop 8, please delete me from your friends list. Friends respect friends, not take their rights away. I will not try to start beef with you, but I do not want you to be in my life, if you won't support me being happy. No matter how you feel about marriage, Prop 8 is about discrimination. And that is never okay. If you choose to vote against my fundamental right to be a happy and equal human being, then we ought to not know each other, for your safety and my own.
Vote NO on Prop 8 if you want me to be happy. And you want to stand up for what is right.

Myspace is lame. Why? It won't let me upload pictures from my computer into this blog. Instead, I must upload the pictures to a myspace album, attach the pictures to a url, and then link them into the blog. PHOOEY. Here is some hilarity that you may enjoy. And if you like kitties, these may prove entertaining.

THE CATNIP EXPERIMENT Once I moved into my first apartment outside of my parent's house, I did not feel I had a "home" until I had some plants growing out on my small balcony. I struggled with what to grow, still an amateur gardener, and decided on catnip. I knew that catnip (also called catmint) is a mint-relative because it has a square-shaped stem, so that gave me hope for its hardiness. I had also seen catnip being sold in pet stores in dry leaf form for the excitement of cats, and my cats loved to roll around in it and get frisky, so for the sake of finances and adventure, I went to a local nursery and bought a couple of catnip plants. I had not planted anything on my own for quite some time, so getting the darned things into a planter proved hysterically messy. I did not know yet about splitting the roots of the poor root-bound plants, so they remained in their plantbox-shape as I wrestled them into small holes I had created for them. The cats were dancing around me, meowing, purring, peeping and otherwise trying to convince me that I ought to let them help. And by help, I mean to let them gnaw the little plants down to nubs. After wrangling the two small plants into their new homes, I immediately made a rookie-gardener mistake, by not watering the whole planter down. Within 24 hours, my catnip began to wilt and look pathetic. At that point, I knew so little about plant-care that I did the only thing I could think of – I watered them. A bunch. They sadly died of waterlog. I decided to try again. I got some fresh soil, consulted the internet, and purchased some new catnips. This time, it worked. The catnip surprised me by thriving. I noted each new leaf formation, each reaching branch, and finally, each tiny bloom of a flower. From those catnip plants on, I became a plant-person. I would observe the wilting of leaves, and use a spritzer bottle to keep things lively. I would keep mental track of how often which plants ought to be watered, and organize similar plants into succulent planters for occasional watering. Catnip became a reason to pay attention to, and be curious about, the plants around me. Not only was it functional (for my cats) but it seemed reasonable in how it reacted to me. When I spritzed it, the leaves opened up, when I neglected it, the leaves drooped down. The pattern of how the jagged leaves grew on the square stem and how I saw the start of new growth, it really excited me. The cats knew my routine with the plants, and would dance around the planter, waiting to be fed leaves of the fresh catnip. I purposefully chose large leaves on alternating sides of the stems, imagining how the lower leaves would now have more sunshine and water spritz to become big leaves one day. Little did I know that by purchasing those two plants, and quickly killing them, it would lead me to a garden-mania, with catnip being one of my favorite plants to cultivate. The whole ordeal sounds so simple, but it really opened up a purpose and perspective that I never would have anticipated. In having a relationship with a plant, physically seeing it respond to my actions, made me realize all the other things I ought to be growing on my little porch. From the Catnip Experiment, I moved onto basil, the first herb I ever grew on my own that I could enjoy for myself – which then led to the mania and love that is my garden today.

As per Sara's request, I'll be writing a "real blog" telling ya'll a little bit about what has been going on in my life. Today is August 19th 2008. One week from today I will be getting into an RV and heading into the Nevada desert for a week of playful insanity in the dust, better known as Burning Man. This will be my 9th year in a row participating in the event. This morning my lovely girlfriend Rebecca asked me if I was excited. I honestly answered "no", because I am more stressed and anxious than anything. With only 6 days left for "BM prep" I am realizing how much crud still needs to happen. If only to fill you in a bit, here are some things that need to be finished before leaving next Tuesday. Sewing related -Get sewing machine fixed -Sew remaining leg warmers and arm warmers -Sew more scoodies (scarf + hood) -Sew a couple easy skirts -Sew shrug wrap from turtleneck
Need to purchase -Cheap short socks from huge dollar store -Pants, preferably jeans, for evenings
Need to do around the house -Paint homemade picket fence white -Cut a painful amount of rebar into 1, 2 and 3 foot sections -Gather PVC pipes into designated piles -Duct tape fabric flowers to poles -Gather all tools needed for the week
School related -Buy books -Do homework for first week of classes -See Professor Palmer about switching to an Honors Thesis (or not)
And what of the rest of my time? I'm also in the midst of dealing with more doctors appointments (this Friday at 9:15am!), blood being drawn, and having to refill prescriptions up the wazoo. I have officially overcome my fear of getting my blood drawn (and the needle that comes with it) out of pure necessity. I have to get blood tests every two months, so I might as well get used to it. And I have. I just nervously make conversation, and try not to watch the blood flowing out of my veins and into the multitude of viles. School starts while I will be in the desert, on August 27, and I will miss my first week. I've already contacted my two teachers (Thesis adviser Christine Palmer and Professor Presti, the famous Drugs in the Brain professor), and they ok'd my absence. That part is good. I am also vaguely stressed about getting my apartment ready for Liz to cat-sit while we are gone. Since we can't pay her much, instead I insist that I'm taking her grocery shopping and then supplying her with entertainment and booze, so to lure her into spending as much time as possible with the kitties. In terms of school, I have 13 units left (not much!) which translates to two semesters, since my thesis class is 4 units and super important, I'm just going to take it and one other class this semester. I'm super, SUPER nervous about my thesis. I really like the idea of working on a series of lesson plans (or a year-long curriculum) for youth-friendly science, similar to science vans (for more info- Science By Van). I really enjoy making lesson plans, and I really like science education, so I figure, why the hell not combine the two. My mom met a great contact who is involved in Informal Science Education (similar to this), which is a great potential lead. Around the apartment, we've nearly perfected our porch and the plant set up out there. Right now we're growing spinach, sweet peas, onions, lavender (to which, by the way, I am allergic), mint, basil, parsley, stevia, a pepper plant, and a bunch of non-edibles. As far as the rest of my world goes, I've been slacking on gardening and trying to become a more proficient sewer, as you may have guessed from my sewing list. I have nearly mastered arm warmers and am very proud that with next to zero experience, I have whipped up some really cute things. In fact, Rebecca is so pleased with some of the things, that she's taken to wearing them around the house and doing mini-fashion shows. So! That's my life, as of late. Oh, and my beta, "Red fish" died. It was a sad and stinky day. I opened the lid to feed the fishes and one was floating upside down. It was.. really gross, and smelled horrid. I frantically cleaned out the tank (because another beta, Blue fish, was still very much alive) and saved as many little water snails as I could. Now we just have one beta, and many many water snails. I hope that this satisfies your curiosity. ^_^ Thinking pleasantly of the settling dust, Cat

Hey Myspace-ians, Any of you going to Burning Man this year? I'm doing a virtual headcount. Oh, and I'm officially attempting to sew things that are too hard for me, but that isn't stopping me.. and it has never stopped me from doing much before now. Hrmn. I'm working on this: Threadbanger's shrug wrap. Your sewing ninja-in-training, C
