Current mood: cheerful
Classes are wrapping up this week right before celebrations for the Fourth of July bwgin. I really enjoyed my first class as a CCT student and am increasingly looking forward to the fall... although at the same time i don't want the summer to end! Although my class (New Media and Political Dissent) is over I still have my final paper to work on. We've turned in 3 smaller papers already and for this final one are to connect them together and expand upon what we've been doing.
The focus of the paper is an individual or group of dissenters and their use of new media. I chose to work on an annonymous street artist from the UK named Banksy. I've specifically been studying how his graffiti challanges the power of both consumer culture and governmet authority. Its interesting to see how he plays with familiar images and phrases, altering advertisments and street signs, to protest. I am most fascinated by his the irony of his dissent: he protests western culture and society by playing with the very signs and language that legitimize and support it. Interesting stuff.
Everyone's projects are fascinating and have me looking forward to meeting more students and being exposed to even more ways of thinking and seeing the world around us.
Have a good weekend and happy Fourth!!!
-Georgia

Singh. Daily lectures will include guest speakers from a variety of international organizations housed in Geneva, such as the United Nations, The International Telecommunications Union, and the World Intellectual Property Organization. There will also been a number of opportunities for students to take in the sights and sounds of the city and surrounding areas. You can read more about the experience on our Geneva blog at http://cctgeneva.wordpress.com.

Howard Rheingold of Stanford University was at Georgetown this week speaking to the CCT program. Most of his lecture focused on how mobile technology enables members of society to get involved in collective action. He linked the idea of people working together to solve large societal issues - even in the face of little personal reward - to the earliest forms of humans. Rheingold also talked quite a bit about the idea of trust in this new epoch. That is, how do we know what information to trust on the internet? Given all the instantaneous communication that occurs - how do we know when and who to trust as we're thrust into so many new and different relationships? You can check out a casual interview between Rheingold and CCT students in this Gnovis podcast. For more information on Rheingold, check out his site, SmartMobs.com.

So you should check out http://www.gnovisjournal.org/ for some really interesting academic work on a whole host of interdisciplinary subjects. Here's how the staff describes the journal: "gnovis is an online academic journal and forum that cultivates new ways of seeing and understanding culture through critical inquiry. gnovis presents work by graduate students pioneering interdisciplinary perspectives on issues in the arts, politics, media, and technology." One of the new additions they've made this past semester is the http://www.gnovisjournal.org/blog. They have a bunch of nice writers - and they cover a wide variety of topics.

Next Saturday Oct. 27 Irvine Contemporary will hold the opening for a series of new photographs by Kahn and Selesnick.

Here's the background story on the series, as well as some details about the artists:
Eisbergfreistadt ("Iceberg Free State") documents the creation of this historical imaginary principality, which is inspired by an actual incident in 1923 when a mammoth iceberg ran aground in the Baltic port of Lubeck, towering over the town and terrifying the populace. Many decided (not unreasonably) that the iceberg caps were melting and the apocalypse was coming. This event inspired gloomy cafe songs and penny dreadfuls, even a deck of playing cards.
Many notegeld and inflationary currencies were issued for the Eisbergfreistadt. Manifestos were published, and posters put up declaring the state's new ideals, citizenship requirements, etc. Products started appearing: butter, lard, chocolate (of surprisingly high quality) etc, all stamped with the Eisbergfreistadt logo. Although the creation of the Eisbergfreistadt is an actual historical incident, it is not clear to what extent it actually existed.
The celestial city depicted on the iceberg seems to owe as much to the spires of Freidrich, as to the halls of ValHalla - it is a place built by Rilkean angels, too perfect for human reality, that can only be intuited by the artist. The worldly goods of the Stadt are therefore in the context of a cruel joke ("you take art and I'll take spam"). Interestingly these apocalyptic fears proved prophetic - Lubeck was the first German city to be fire-bombed in World War II - and, despite being rebuilt, is in danger of flooding due to global warming.
Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick, born in New York City and London, respectively, have been collaborating since 1986. They have exhibited internationally, and their work is included in many notable collections including the Smithsonian Institution; Addison Gallery of American Art; Brooklyn Museum; Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University; Los Angeles County Museum of Art Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as many private and corporate collections.
