They won't cheat you out of a good time
By Jessica Botelho

As their name directly suggests, Cheater Pint is a bar band who refers to themselves as "an independent brewer of choice rock music." Playing mostly in the Boston area, Cheater Pint brings a frothy blend of music to their fans.

"I would say, we're a combination of a lot of things," said Lauran O'Neal, the band's founder and female vocalist, who goes by the nickname, "Pickles." "We're a little bit of pop, a little bit of punk, even a little garage. We call ourselves 'The Pint' for short, which we like better."

Drawing from bands like The Replacements, The Pixies, and Superchunk, O'Neal originally formed the band several years ago with a female bass player and two males. These days, O'Neal is the only woman, backed by three men.

"You might say [Lauran's] the only original member, but I've been in the band for about five years now," said Mark Simon, who shares guitar duties with O'Neal. "Lauran and I definitely share the responsibilities for rhythm and leads. I don't think we really make a distinction in this band, but we do comprise the dual guitar attack of 'The Pint.'

O'Neal and Simon met through a mutual friend -- a pal who actually used to be in the band.

"I was buddies with someone who was in the band before [me] and I do websites and graphic design, so I built their original website," said Simon. "Then, I joined the band. How or why it happened, I don't know, but that's how it went down."

Dan Weddle plays drums for 'The Pint' and Todd Giles is the bassist. Weddle joined by answering an ad O'Neal posted on Craig's List in March 2005 and Giles joined the group last fall.

All three men have a very high opinion of their female lead singer. In fact, they each possess a large amount of respect and admiration for O'Neal and even credit her for being the heart and soul of 'The Pint.'

"Our band would not be without our female," said Giles. "She is the reason the band is."

"Unlike a lot of other women in rock bands, she really is the band," agreed Simon. "It's hard to describe what that means, but what she brings to the table is everything she's got. She leads the band in spirit, in style, and the way we approach our work as a band. In that sense, a lot of other bands have a sort of figurehead that's nothing more than just that -- there's other people pulling the strings. That's not the case with us."

Weddle, who cites hard-hitting drummers like John Bonham, Keith Moon, and Stewart Copeland as his major influences, feels exactly the same way Simon does. He acknowledges the fact that having a female fronting the band is a huge part of what makes their music great.

"The songs are really grown out of a female point of view," he said. "Even though males can sing such songs, when you hear the humor from a gender perspective along with the notes and harmonies, males just wouldn't do the songs justice in my humbled opinion."

Praise for "Pickles" does not stop there. Simon thinks she inspires him and the rest of the band with her unique guitar riffs and sound.

"Pickles is a profound influence on me because she comes up with all these kooky ideas, which are great," said Simon, "She is a very innovative guitarist and that just sort of comes out of not having any pre-conceived ideas. Obviously, influences are very important, but I don't think we ever set out to be this type of band or that type of band. I think once it came together, we ended up being the type of band we are, if that makes sense."

As much as O'Neal contributes to the group, she refuses to take all the credit. With all four members supplying vocals and their respective instruments, O'Neal says they influence her as well.

"Mark's really good at getting it to sound better and have some melody," she said.

Weddle also plays a big part in helping out musically. He provides his ability to stretch the harmonies, as well as his vibrancy on stage and his openness to O'Neal and Simon's ideas, while Giles not only brings his bass skills, but also his playful personality to the band, adding to the fun they like to have while performing live.

"We're regular people, we have jobs, we're not trying to make it as rock stars," said Simon. "We'd like to travel for tours, but we don't want it to be our lifestyles."

"We're having fun," reiterated Weddle. "We're not 21, we don't have delusions. We are all good people balancing life with this passion called rock. Is there anything better?"

Despite our good looks and winning ways, we concluded the gig by congratulating The Men on their fine performance, their victory and their advancement to the semi-final round of the WBCN Rock 'n' Roll Rumble.

We had a great time with many friends. Many thanks to Harper's staff, WBCN, Kevin P., and all who rocked onstage and off!

WBOS 92.9 has this big concert on the Esplanade in May called Earthfest. There is an online voting thing that will allegedly enable some peripheral band like the ’Pint to play the main stage. Can you imagine the Pint at a maximum decibel level in front of thousands of people? If we can clear the entire Esplanade, it would be legendary. Dude, you can help make it happen. Click this graphic below and do what they tell you.

RUMBLE ODDS
By Jed Gottlieb, Boston Herald, April 4, 2008

With few bands buzzing, a dozen dark horses and a lot of the best talent opting out - local young lions Hooray for Earth, Wonderful Spells, and Pretty & Nice will all be playing Hub shows in April, but not at the Rumble - this year’s ’BCN battle is hard to handicap.

But, hey, somebody’s gotta win. And they’ll probably crack some skulls along the way. So if the end of March Madness has left you with a gambling compulsion you can’t quit, here’s the Herald brain trust’s thoughts about the leaders heading into the 2008 sonic smackdown.

HUMANWINE. Odds: 5-1
Do we have gothic fatigue yet? No? Really? OK, then HUMANWINE may be the third theatrical-retro-gothi-punk-folk band to take the Rumble this decade (Reverend Glasseye did it in 2005, the Dresden Dolls in 2003). While Dresden Dolls comparisons still dog HUMANWINE, singer Holly Brewer is very much her own woman. Her own creepy, campy, charismatic woman.

CHEATER PINT. Odds: 5-1
Old hands at the local band thing, this female-fronted four-piece is pushing a decade in the scene. And you can hear it in their sound: the Breeders, Belly, Mission of Burma. So they’ve got experience, like Hillary, but being angry young punks at heart, they’ve embraced change, like Barack.

CLOUDS. Odds: 7-1
Too loud to lose, too wicked to win. While not Clouds’ official motto, it may be their Rumble theme. After metal masterminds Cave In went on indefinite hiatus, guitarist Adam McGrath formed this outlet for heavy, beer-binge grunge. Boston’s never been afraid of noise, but to win, Clouds will need to unleash an earsplitting hurricane of volume, which may alienate the more timid judges. Ah, the catch-22.

MEandJOANCOLLINS. Odds: 8-1
He said-she said rock is hot in the Hub - see this year’s (almost) break-out band Drug Rug (yet another notable local not Rumbling). While the he (singer/guitarist Bo Barringer) and she (singer/guitarist Jen Grygiel) haven’t been around long, they’ve already managed to add a nice haggard quality to the MEandJOANCOLLINS’ sound. Think good, gritty new wave with a bad, Britpop hangover.

WILD ZERO. Odds: 10-1
Gutter punk with a metal chaser has faired well in past Rumbles (Gang Green won in 1986; Doc Hopper in 1995). If the judges can get over the fact that punk ain’t in vogue - especially spit-in-your-eye punk- this quintet has a legit shot.

A.K.A.C.O.D. Odds: 13-1
Monique Ortiz is the best Mark Sandman Dana Colley’s found since the actual Sandman passed away. She’s like a low-rock Nico. But the Rumble never gave Sandman and Colley’s bands Treat Her Right and Morphine any love, so this trio’s a longshot. Of course, maybe the guilt of snubbing Sandman will work in A.K.A.C.O.D.’s favor. If the Academy can be shamed into giving Scorsese an Oscar for one of his worst movies, anything’s possible.

Surprisingly, Cheater Pint has been invited to this year’s WBCN Rock ’n’ Roll Rumble! I say surprisingly, because I continue to be surprised by almost every good thing that happens to this band. Must be one of my mental defects. How we got the nod, I don’t know, but why ask why?

Some dumbasses think the competition aspect is the most important thing about the Rumble. What we consider important is being offered this special opportunity to play for folks who have never seen the ’Pint, while drinking beer and seeing some great bands. Hopefully we’ll gain new fans and meet people who can help us continue to make music. Kinda like any other gig, except we get more publicity and promotion than we can muster for ourselves. And we get paid 200 bucks :)

We are also very pumped to see some of our friends — Watts, Dirt Mall, Jason Bennett and the Resistance, and Andrea Gillis — were invited too.

Seriously, we've been waiting a long time for this :P Thanks, Mr. Strom.

CHEATER PINT, GHOULS NIGHT OUT, THE TAKEBACK

Abbey Lounge, Somerville, MA
11/17/07
The Takeback (your standard earnest Irish punk rock act) have the Abbey packed early in the evening with (apparently) friends and relations. The band is okay—they deliver on effort and energy, but the material is straight-faced and routine. I get the impression this stuff is intended as relevant and full of depth, so I suppose I'm the wrong audience. I'm the goof who's looking for art, personality or humor. Still, they are trying, so the least I can do is be polite and acknowledge that fact.

Some of the crowd here for The Takeback must have started their serious drinking around noon, and that's bad news for Ghouls Night Out. Let's consider what we've got here: three cute defenseless girls alone on stage…and a room full of drunken yahoos (masculine variety). Amazingly, by only one guy proves problematic screwing with the mic stands, lolling backwards on stage and looking up Myra's skirt. He's pissing me off…mostly because I didn't think of doing it first. Asshole. Amidst GNO's usual spooky surf rock-a-go-go, Abbey regular Dave points out a truism I'd managed to overlook, lo these many months: that drummer Lily is really hot. How did I miss this before? Excuses: (1) You can't see the drummer way in the back and (2) Myra's pretty distracting. Apologies to Lily are in order! Either for not confirming her awesomeness in past reviews, or for greatly embarrassing her in print like this. Ladies' choice.

Cheater Pint gets underway—they don't even finish the first song and I'm already regretting that I've never crossed paths with this band before now. Been missing out on an excellent band. They are like the great Boston rock of old—Robin Lane or Private Lightning only with more gusto. I dunno about art, but there's huge helpings of humor and personality here. Lauran Pint's vocals are powerhouse but never to the point that they eclipse the material or the rest of the band. That's whatcha call craft. The whole band has it—they play like a seasoned star act. Cheater Pint scores the number 2 position on The Noise Local Top 30? It's a true story.

And here is this CD review by Bob Vinyl:

Considering the album cover, a not-so-clever Pink Floyd parody, I had relatively low expectations for Cheater Pint. It didn't take long for the music to change that though. Cheater Pint play raw tunes that at times conjure up images of X, the Replacements, the Ramones, Cheap Trick and late-Angry Samoans even. The common denominator is that all of these influences strip away the pretensions of more complex bands, exposing honest what-you-see-is-what-get music.

The simple melodies are delivered with an edge that is engaging and even angry at times, but never bitter. The musicianship isn't what comes from a book or a school, but from playing together and knowing each other and its loose ramblings must work even better live. Like the cover implies, there's a drunken, devil-may-care nature to Dark Side of the Pint, but while that's often shakey ground, Cheater Pint manages to stay on solid footing throughout. This isn't an album that will change the face of rock music, but it may just remind you of why you started listening in the first place.
