ring of fire
SOMA MESTIZO
 UPCOMING SHOWS
6/12/09, Your Inner Vagabond, YIV
6/13/09, East End Food Co-op, Co-op

"it's been a long time, i shouldn't have left you, without a cool beat to step to"

As some may know and a few may have guessed, I, the expresser of all things Soma Mestizo-ish, have been on what one could say a sabbatical from all arts production type of thangs. Hence, unfortunately, a website, very much in need of updating. But I think this lovely E-blast shall suffice.

Now, my lovely co-horts have been up to all kinds of artish mischief:
Richard "Skilah" Gartner has apparently, at least what I've overheard in cafes and bars, become some sort of Yoga God.
DJ Soy Sos, besides rocking the hottest parties, like the "Dirty Ball", had the great pleasure to work on the documentary, "New Muslim Cool". It should air sometime on PBS.
And last but not least, Ketan Bakrania, like, is he in another band, like how many bands does that make it now...forgive me if I'm incorrect, but I think his new musical project is called the "German Shephards". I don't know, ask him when you see him...

Anywhoooo.........................................I digress

Hear yea, come hither...lend me your ear
for a musical whisper...

This Friday, (last minutedness, also part of the sabbatical) June 12th at Your Inner Vagabond, Soma Mestizo and Machete will be dancing and howling through the "burning rings of fire".

Machete' is smoking hot, not to mention,  really great Puerto Rican music, fearturing Ms. Lady Diva-Genja on the vocals. I love to see her sing and enjoy the rare moments when we sing together (if anyone had a chance to see the Machete' Soma combo at one of our Incubator gigs last year, you will know what I mean.) The instrumentation, is none other than members of another group we love, Chai Ba Ba. (Hey, remember the rocking funking parties in Ketan's basement!)

Now, due to Genja's employment, (if the Pens go to game 7, Machete will close the show out, but if not (GO Pens) Machete will open). Either way, I figure if you are on this list, you are a rather cool and flexible person.

Here's the Info:

I.R. is a new music label launched in 2003 by TFTT that explores the twin themes of Indigenous Resistance/Indigenous Reality. Issues and examples of indigenous resistance and Indigenous reality that normally dont receive attention will be highlighted through our releases. I.R also refers to homegrown insurrection and the fight against injustice everywhere.

I.R is intimately connected to the TFTT freedub project. Hence there will be opportunities to recive vinyl, books, posters free of charge.

An autonomous venture, I.R releases comes together with a minimum of resources but with a maximum of cooperation and care from those involved in the project; a family of loosely affilated folks who believe in the spirit and deed of resistance. We all have the capacity to fight the beast. We all have a part we can play.

RESIST INJUSTICE!
FUCK BABYLON!
So, you gonna spend a Friday evening with us?
I would start early-do the whole Lawrenceville thang, check out some Galleries, like Zombo and FE, head over to New Amsterdam for Happy Hour, have a meal at YIV and other locales
Make a eve of it, hang wit us, then come chill wit us-I don't know about the others, but I'll be headed to the Thunderbird, to hear another Ms. Lady (very pregnant) Diva-Omega Love will be there around 11 pm around when our show will be done. So, make a night of it. If  I can crawl out of my cocoon to sing and dance through rings of fire, surely you can crawl out and meet us half way for whatever kind of time it shall be...it could be fun, it could be odd, it could be bizarre-whatever it is, it is never dull.

World leaders to hold economic summit in Pittsburgh

Thursday, May 28, 2009

Pittsburgh will host the world's major economic powers at a G20 Summit in September.

The White House made the announcement at a press briefing in Washington, D.C. this afternoon. The summit will be held on Sept. 24 and 25.

Presidential spokesman Robert Gibbs said the U.S. agreed to host the next summit during the London meeting earlier in the spring. Pittsburgh is "a good place" to hold the summit because of its recovery from the decline of the steel industry in the 1980s, he said.

At the Pittsburgh Summit, President Barack Obama will meet with leaders representing 85 percent of the world's economy to take stock of progress made since the most recent summits and discuss further actions to assure a sound and sustainable recovery from the global economic and financial crisis, officials said.

"With leaders already scheduled to be in the United States in September to attend the United Nations General Assembly, President Obama offered to host the Summit and leaders of the G20 welcomed the invitation," a White House statement said. "Pittsburgh has demonstrated a commitment to employing new and green technology to further economic recovery and development. The summit will be held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Downtown Pittsburgh, an exemplar of that commitment. The facility is proud to have a LEED Gold Certification from the U.S Green Building Council for leadership in energy and environmental design."

"This is a tremendous opportunity for Pittsburgh," said city Chief of Staff Yarone Zober. "This is a chance for us to showcase our city, and our region, for the world."

He said that Mr. Obama, perhaps joined by First Lady Michelle Obama, would be among the world leaders in attendance, "as well as hundreds of dignitaries, world leaders from around the globe, and thousands of journalists from around the world."

Mr. Zober said the decision to hold the summit here was based on repeated contact between White House staff, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and his staff, and Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and his staff.

Among the selling points: "Pittsburgh has really been a model for an economic turnaround," he said, noting the smokestacks-to-knowledge transformation of the regional economy and the development of environmentally friendly "green" job sectors.

It doesn't hurt, he said, that "President Obama is a big Pittsburgh fan in so many ways, and we're glad of it."

He acknowledged that preparing the city to host the world's leaders would be a big job.

"We're going to be ready to welcome the world to Pittsburgh in September," he said. "We're going to make sure that this city shines. . . . This is potentially one of the largest things to happen in Pittsburgh."

The short-term economic impact to hotels, restaurants and other Downtown businesses is significant, he said. So may be the long-term impacts of introducing so many top leaders and international journalists to the city, hopefully including its neighborhoods, he said.

The city's public safety departments have already begun coordinating security planning with the Secret Service, he said, but details are not yet worked out.

Mr. Onorato said hosting the summit is a sign of the area's economic stability and environmental innovations. Pittsburgh's convention center is the largest LEED-certified convention center in the world.

"I want to thank President Obama for giving us this remarkable opportunity to showcase our accomplishments and transformation on a world stage," he said.

The G20 includes Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union (along with the European Central Bank).

The most recent summit occurred in April in London, Mr. Obama's first major international conference.

Previous conferences have spawned demonstrations that have sometimes become violent in the host cities. Pittsburgh had a peaceful protest in April during the London conference when marchers went from Market Square to the Federal Building on Liberty Avenue.

Key Findings

ShareThis

The top subprime lenders whose loans are largely blamed for triggering the global economic meltdown were owned or backed by giant banks now collecting billions of dollars in bailout money — including several that have paid huge fines to settle predatory lending charges. The banks that funded the subprime industry were not victims of an unforeseen financial collapse, as they have sometimes portrayed themselves, but enablers that bankrolled the type of lending threatening the financial system.

These are among the findings that emerged from the Center for Public Integrity’s analysis of government data on nearly 7.2 million “high-interest” or subprime loans made from 2005 through 2007, a period that marks the peak and collapse of the subprime boom. The computer-assisted analysis also revealed The Subprime 25 — the top 25 originators of the high-interest loans, accounting for nearly $1 trillion and about 72 percent of industry-reported subprime loans during that period.

U.S. and European banks poured huge sums into the subprime lending market due to unceasing demand for high-yield, high-risk bonds backed by home mortgages. The banks — including household names like Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Citigroup, Credit Suisse First Boston, and Goldman Sachs & Co — made huge profits while their executives collected handsome bonuses until the bottom fell out of the real estate market.

According to the analysis:

At least 21 of the top 25 subprime lenders were financed by banks that received bailout money — through direct ownership, credit agreements, or huge purchases of loans for securitization.

Nine of the top 10 lenders were based in California, including all of the top five — Countrywide Financial Corp., Ameriquest Mortgage Co., New Century Financial Corp., First Franklin Corp., and Long Beach Mortgage Co.

Twenty of the top 25 subprime lenders have closed, stopped lending, or been sold to avoid bankruptcy. Most were non-bank lenders.

Eleven of the lenders on the list, including four recipients of bank bailout funds, have made payments to settle claims of widespread lending abuses.
