This really isn't a "Best of" list as much as it's simply a highly subjective grouping of my favorite and therefore most played albums of 2007 in no particular order. Click the album cover for the buy link. The Besnard Lakes: The Besnard Lakes are the Dark Horse [Jagjaguwar] Fuzzed out, space rock via Quebec. A lavishly produced, psychedelic rock opus with influences as varied as Pink Floyd and The Beach Boys. [Disaster mp3]
St. Vincent: Marry Me [Beggars Banquet] Perfectly dysfunctional, little-indie-lovesongs that are sweet, charming and frankly quite frightening all at once. [Your Lips are Red mp3]
Miracle Fortress: Five Roses [Secret City] This instant indie-pop classic is so sugary, it should be on a shelf in the cereal aisle between Cocoa Krispies and Lucky Charms. Download. Eat. Enjoy. Satisfaction guaranteed. [Have You Seen in Your Dreams mp3] Broken Social Scene Presents Kevin Drew: Spirit If [Arts&Crafts]
The Broken Social Scener does it again with a collection of trippy, post-modern indie rock songs that will have your eardrums bouncing around in the furthest parts of the stratosphere. [Safety Bricks mp3]
Arcade Fire: Neon Bible [Merge]
Ok, it's not as groundbreaking as Funeral, but Neon Bible captures the mood of a generation along the likes of The Cure's Disintegration. [Intervention mp3] Figurines: When the Deer Wore Blue [Morningside]
This quirky, lo-fi, alt-rock masterpiece from Denmark is a must-have for fans of Built to Spill and Modest Mouse. I played this album a lot this year and it's still in heavy rotation. [The Air We Breathe mp3] Andrew Bird: Armchair Apocrypha [Fat Possum]
Dark, poignant and remarkably beautiful. Andrew Bird is not your standard, straight-forward songwriter. Every track takes you around corners that you're not sure you really want to go down, but you're ultimately glad you did. [Imitosis mp3] Bon Iver: For Emma, Forever Ago [Jagjaguwar] Technically, this album won't be officially released until 2008, so I'll include it on my "Best of 2007" and "Best of 2008". It's just that good. [Skinny Love mp3] Bodies of Water: Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink [Secretly Canadian]
Swirling harmonies and heavenly melodies collide to create thirteen orchestral, indie-pop masterpieces ala Arcade Fire and The Polyphonic Spree [I Guess I'll Forget the Sound, I Guess, I Guess mp3] Animal Collective: Strawberry Jam [Domino]
Last year, the most innovative and groundbreaking album was Return to Cookie Mountain. This year, the honor goes to Animal Collective who has uploaded into our collective consciousness an experiment that is loud, noisy and delicious. [Peacebone mp3]
