Doug Stanhope @ Exit/In 2009.04.10

Tickets are selling fast for Doug Stanhope's one and only stop in Nashville this year (April 10th at Exit/In with The Mattoid and Chad Riden). This will sell out, so buy your tickets now while you still can. The Facebook event is here.

Stanhope's material ranges from true-life graphic perversion to volatile social criticism. Doug is vulgar, opinionated, brutally honest and shockingly uninhibited and is certainly not for everybody. He started his career in Las Vegas doing jack-off jokes for free drinks. Not much has changed, save for the mullet.

Here is a short video from Doug's  "Deadbeat Hero" dvd:

A review:
"Ask anyone whose opinion matters, and they'll tell you Doug Stanhope is one of the top ten stand-ups in the world today. Stanhope's confrontational stance comes from the rough, blistered underbelly of America 's trailer parks; he's a feral, aggressive man full fuelled by primal urges to drink, fight and screw - and the corrosive material has all the venomous aggression you might expect from that background. But what underlines it, and makes it so untouchably good, is the passion and conviction with which he holds his intelligent beliefs, informed by sensibilities that might seem alien to such a no-nonsense, pig-headed persona." - Chortle, UK

THE MATTOID: An ever roving cast but one solid constant, the Mattoid (Ville Kiviniemi) hails from the cold morelle land of Finland. After traveling the countries of Western Europe, Mexico, Thailand, India, and Egypt the Mattoid decided to spread his message amongst his fine American friends. A few years back he resides amongst the Anti-folk presence ala NYC, has had stints in Reno, San Francisco and Phoenix. Now resides in Nashville, (Jiaaaaaa!) Tennessee. Who knows where next! GLORY HOLY THE EP IS NOW AVAILABLE!

A lot of big time performers have one of those "Demand Me!" widgets where (I'm assuming) you can DEMAND that they come and perform live in your basement. I think that's awesome. I don't have the fanbase that Jim Gaffigan or Maria Bamford has, but I never want to miss a promotion opportunity, so I just signed up for Eventful.

The very best benefit, so far, is the widget that says, "Chad Riden: Demanded by 0 people in 0 places!"

Sounds just about right.

I realize the widget is 30 seconds old and there is no way there could be any demands, but they encourage you to post this everywhere.. myspace, facebook, my site, twitter, whatnots..  and why wouldn't I!? Why would I not want to show everybody just how in demand I am? O people in 0 places, bitches! Suck on THAT, Gaffigan!

It's the moosssst nauseating tiiiime of the year. Well, almost.. Valentines Day is hard to beat. The December Holidays are second in the race for most depressing season only because there isn't heart-shaped crap in your face everywhere you go. Instead, it's the cliched Christmas garbage that has been crammed down our throats so many times that we're fooled into thinking it's tradition.

This continued complete bastardization of the true meaning of the season has permeated every aspect of our daily lives. Everywhere you go.. what do you see? It's out there in the malls.. it's all over radio, television and the internet. It's even inked all over that pathetic, old-world, dead medium, print.

Will we ever be able to escape from it all and get back to the basics? Or have they permanently altered our concept of what the meaning of this season is? What values and customs will our children pass on to theirs? I wonder if the old ways I know and love will be forgotten. Will the ways of my ancestors eventually wither and die from lack of interest like the wonderful Police Academy franchise? I'd like to bring Christmas back to what I refer to as the "Police Academy 1 - 4" era.. the glory years.. the way it should be. As it stands, our holidays are stuck somewhere in the "Police Academy television series" era.. a total disgrace.

More than anything else, the one thing that really burns me is the way the religious zealots keep trying to sneak God, Jesus and The Bible into this once-sacred celebration. Always pushing their wacky ideas on everybody.. trying to make religion the focus instead of the one thing that we hold near and dear as holy: commercialism.

It just makes me sick to think that consumer spending is down so low this quarter. How can you call yourself an American if you're not out there buying big ticket items like the Nintendo Wii? Don't you care about the economy? Don't you care about your kids? The only way to let your friends and family know that you love them is to buy them something impersonal and expensive. Roses and X-Boxes are good, but diamonds and SUV's are better.

When will we all wake up and realize that self-reflection, worship and spending time with loved ones wastes precious time when we could be watching Coca-Cola polar bear commercials? While Satans little helper, Martha Stewart, pushes her wreaths and wassail, true traditionalists like myself know that nothing says "peace on earth" quite like over-extending your credit to buy the latest disposable-fad products at your local Wal-Mart.

Maybe I'm being too critical. It's just that when I hear all this junk about the so-called "true meaning of the season" it really burns my brownies. I'm just thankful that when I get depressed about the way the world is heading, I can go into any Quickie-Stop-N-Shop and see Santa endorsing cartons of Lucky Strikes. That always cheers me up.

Have a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Kooky Kwanza, Funky Festivus, or whatever the hell it is you celebrate. I'll help spread a little holiday cheer.. here's a classic clip of my cameo appearance as Tiny Tim in George C. Scott's "A Christmas Carol." Clip courtesy of WBXX-TV:

I spend a lot of time reading and discussing news stories about comedy, interviews with comics, reviews of shows & cd's and whatnot. For a long time, I've seen sites like SlashDot.org and Digg.com and Fark.com and thought there should be a site just for COMEDY news. It's not "here's a funny thing I found on the internet" it's the stories from behind the scenes.

So here's what I did:

ComedyNews.Org is a socially-powered comedy news site featuring interviews, reviews and news stories from around the world. It's a web application that allows you to submit an article that will be reviewed by all and will be promoted, based on popularity, to the main page. When a user submits a news article it will be placed in the "unpublished" area until it gains sufficient votes to be promoted to the main page. Users can comment on each article in threaded discussions.. and there's a bunch of social network-y crap going on, too.

If you're a comedy nerd looking for comedy nerd news, stop by and chime in. If you see a comedy-related story out there, please submit it!

Last night I opened for Maria Bamford at Zanies & it was a ton of fun.. but the place wasn't sold out the way I automatically assumed it would be. It absolutely astounded me that tickets were available.. still does. I wasn't even going to bother to tell people to come out, I thought it was universally understood that this was a DO NOT MISS event. Her Comedy Central Presents specials are both at the top of my list of ones I'll watch every time they come on tv, no matter how many times I've seen them. Her cd's get more plays in my house than any other comic's cds. I went to see her and the rest of the Comedians Of Comedy any time they were within two states of where I was at the time. She's that good. If you're six hours away from Nashville right now, you should get in your car and start driving.

If you haven't seen her, check her YouTube clip on the front of NashvilleStandUp.com right now. She is crazy funny and does a few voices and act-outs and is sweet and wonderful and a perfect example of everything that is GOOD in the world. I realize I gush about her, but I love this woman. LOVE HER. I just want to hug her and squeeze more funny out. It's ok, my wife knows.. she loves Maria probably more than I do, if that's possible. Bamford is one of those people who is NOT extroverted. She's not dominating conversations, interrupting your story with something better or funnier.. she's a quiet listener. An absolute sweetheart who listens to what people say and watches how they say it and pays attention to the world.. and then goes on stage and reproduces the funny absurdities of how people act and talk and turns the everyday mundane into the "holy shit" hilarious. She is amazing.

Sometimes people say, "women aren't funny" and I ALWAYS reply, "wrong. Maria Bamford." There are other funny ladies out there, too.. but I challenge anybody to watch The Bammers and then say women aren't funny. It simply does not happen.

I'm just saying that she's only in town for two shows - last night and tonight at 7:30. Tickets are $18 each (if you are on Zanies email list, which I highly recommend, you can get them for cheaper). Come on out. If you pay to get in because of what I just said and at the end of the show you aren't totally smitten with Maria, I, Chad Riden, will personally refund the cost of your tickets out of my own pocket. We can then no longer be friends, of course.. but you'll get your money back.

Friday thru Sunday the headliner is Nick Griffin, as seen on Letterman.. I'm sure those will be great shows too.. but I've never met him or seen his act yet. Friday I might just send an email talking about how much I love him, too, for all I know.. but I'm tellin' you. Don't miss tonight.

I'm trying to get people to change their myspace/facebook profile pics to the word "VOTE" until the election as a voter awareness idea. I want to see how far it will go and how many people will do it! If you can help, that'd be great and pass it along!
