05/27/09: I can't believe it. Can you believe it? In FOUR days, I'll be planted in a boxseat at Fenway Park with my buddy Monk.

Seeing Phish.

My first tour since 2000 and this time, I'm a bit older, less foolish and more armed with art.

So, for this momentous occasion, I've created another poster for the first leg of tour,  with the promise of two more coming. You see, I managed to get my Friday ticket to Hampton by promising to paint a setlist painting of each night of the VA shows back in March. I've recently completed the first night and have started the second. In the meantime, with the success of the Hampton posters, I decided to get a run of 300 setlist posters. The final size will be 14 x 20, the image size will be 12.6 x 19 and the paper is 4/0 100# gloss text. Posters will be signed by me, the artist.

If you'd like to pre-order this work, please send a Paypal payment to crazyredbeard@crazyredbeard.com. Pre-orders are $15+ $8 shipping/handling/Paypal fee. Checks made out to Jon Blake and for $22 ($15 + $7 shipping/handling/insurance) can be sent to:

CRB Productions, c/o Jon Blake

1843 Ivywest lane

Charlottesville, VA 22901

Photobucket

The finalized image will be a bit more complete than this and the colors will be more vibrant, the image more clear. The painting itself contains a visual reference to every song that Phish played on their historic return and reunion at Hampton, VA on 03/06/09.

Set I: Fluffhead, The Divided Sky, Chalkdust Torture, Sample in a Jar, Stash, I Didn’t Know, The Oh Kee Pa Ceremony, Suzy Greenberg, Farmhouse, NICU, Horn, Rift, Train Song, Water in the Sky, The Squirming Coil, David Bowie

Set II: Backwards Down The Number Line, Tweezer, Taste, Possum, Theme from the Bottom, First Tube, Harry Hood, Waste, You Enjoy Myself

Encore: Grind, Bouncing Around the Room, Loving Cup

Check out this little video as well made by Michael Babb!

What else to say, what else to say. You'll be able to see me carting paintings around at the following shows:

Fenway->JB1->JB2->JB3->Great Woods->Camden, Knoxville, Starlake, Red Rocks and the Gorge. Speaking of Red Rocks, I'm participating in the Mock Show: art and poster convention! After the BPCIII: Phamily Reunion at Hampton, it seemed a no brainer to return to another convention. I'll have posters from Hampton and the setlist posters there as well as MANY live paintings.

For more information, please check out their site: http://www.amockshow.com/

After a banner month in March, April proved to be very slow art wise. I took some time to actually just go to shows, rather than paint them. However, post Grateful Dead in Charlottesville, I did get to swing over to the Is venue and paint to Particle with Michael Kang. At the end of the show Steve Molitz asked if he could fingerpaint on it. I, of course, had no problem with this.

I then told him about how the last time I'd painted for them in Earl's Backyard in Tabernacle, NJ (see story about GoTV), they'd aborted Elevator because the police showed up, right at the rising part of the jam. A few years later when I saw Phil and Friends at Vibes '08, Molitz was playing keys and I distinctly recall walking in on the band ROCKING an Elevator. It was a full circle moment for me. At Tabernacle, Steve had said to me, "You know, it doesn't matter where you are. Whether it's in a diner in Texas or driving down a long road in California, when the Dead comes on, it just...feels...right."

So I remember hearing this running through my head as the Elevator kept going up, finishing that Tabernacle version, at least in my mind. And I relayed this to Steve and said, "Thanks for participating in a cosmic full circle thing for me."

And he kept painting and thanked me for doing what I do. He then took some pictures for his phone. I was honored.

I later kept working on this piece, which is 30 x 40, to Future Rock and the Bandaloop Doctors at the same venue. It's sigend on the front (worked in) by Particle.

Particular Loop Lounge

I think it's still a work in progress.

Beyond that, I hit up Some Kind of Jam 4 in Kempton, PA and had a great time.  Didn't manage to sell anything, but came away with these two, the second of which I just took to get captured, so prints are available.

03/14/09
First of all, let me start off by giving thanks to the most High for such a
wonderful meeting of phamily, friends and loved ones this past weekend
in Hampton. We left our house on Friday with one ticket between myself
and Julia, with the possibility of maybe getting two more through an
art trade.

As we got closer to Hampton, my Friday ticket was secured. I'd offered
to paint a painting for each night of the Hampton Phish run, with
setlists being the basis of each night's work. Someone liked the idea
and, upon arriving on the lot at Hampton, this gentleman gave me a
Friday ticket and some money for the yet to be completed paintings. I
figure I'll end up making posters of each one for the summer tour. That
should make us some gas money for the northeast part of the tour.

We also ended up trading 3 sets of our posters for a Sunday ticket for
Julia so she got to see her first show!!! Which, by the by, was a good
show to be at for a first timer...some rarities, some new songs, some
classics jammed out very well...an excellent time.

The Best Poster Convention III: Phamily Reunion was a HUGE success on
many fronts. I have to thank Shaun and Jason for the hard work and
everything they did to make this event happen and run smoothly. I met
many, many amazing artists and picked up some cool prints, magnets and
posters and we sold a fair amount of numbered sets of my own work.

Posters are still available so please contact me if you want a set or
an individual poster. I'll still do all three for $45 for you guys and
the individual ones for $15. Trying to give scenesters a price break. :)

I even got a chance to talk to Jim Pollock who saw my live painting
lined up against the car as we were loading up to leave the event. He
and I talked for a good ten minutes or so before he had to go get
interviewed. Mainly about surrendering as an artist and a human being
to the will of the Divine. About how this is all such an amazing,
magical journey and how I never thought I'd be doing what I was doing
with art. He told me he loved my work and that we should do another
poster convention at another event soon. That just about made my
weekend right there in and of itself. Pollock giving me props for MY
art. Awesome.

So, by Sunday, with tickets for both of us in hand, we were VERY happy
and proceeded to have a grand time in the Mothership. It was great
getting to spend this show with Julia. My 47th. Her 1st. In many ways,
it was the best Phish show ever for me for a number of reasons. Highly
emotional, the best, imo, the boys had played all weekend and it was
with my lovely partner after a banner day in art sales.

LIFE IS GOOD.

So a HUGE thank you to everyone who came out and bought posters, prints
and originals. Without you guys, I wouldn't be able to do this at all.
I'm proud to be a part of this scene and am so glad, glad, glad that
you're alive.

By the way, Saturday night saw me jaunt over to the Tribeca to paint for the Heavy Pets. Attached is that painting, which is 30x40, can be flipped upside down for another view, is titled Egyptian Fowl and is going for $1500.

We headed to the beach on Monday for some seafood and dipped our feet
in the icy water. Come to think of it, there was some sea foam attached
to that water. I'm looooooking through.....

Okay. Sorry for the Phish references, but what can I say? The
boys are back, summer tour is looming and I couldn't be happier. It's
raining outside, but the sun is shining on the inside, where it counts.
I hope it's that way for you, too.

Wednesday, 03/11/09, found me back at The Canal Club in Richmond for the EQ Produktions led showing of MO Theory and new favorite, OTT.
I touched up the Pets painting a bit during MO Theory (who I really
like a lot....Richmond musicians are getting better and better). I then
proceeded to create a new 24x36 work to Ott's set (his name is actually
Ott...a lot of people call his band O-T-T...pronouncing out each
letter, but his actual name is Ott). Started off by putting different
color O's and T's on the canvas and then used plastic to smear the
paint everywhere.

Ott came over at the end and literally marvelled at it. He told me
he might want to use it for an album cover or have me do some work for
him. We then talked about how difficult it would be to ship something
from VA to Spain. Awesome.

If Ott doesn't snag the painting, it's going for $750 and is signed by him on the back. I called it You Ott Enjoy.

So, in a nutshell?? I'm enjoying life to the fullest and hoping you're doing the same.

See you guys at The Norva for The New Deal! Also, look for me at
EOTO and 2020 Soundsystem soon in Richmond, Basshound and the Former
Champions in Charlottesville as well as with William Walter on lights!!

I've also got a Sullivan Hall McLovins show possibly in the works and a possible Toubab Krewe show coming up.

Get at me with commissions!

Take care everyone and I hope your lives are filled with love and light!!!

As always, framed and matted prints are $60. Write me if you don't see
what you want on the website. We may be getting upgraded soon.

02/23/09: Winchester, I
want you to think of yourself real long and hard. Now, I want you to
think back to the 2Pac song/video, California Love. NOW I want you to
think of the part where the effects laden voice over pumps in, singing,
"California, knows how to paaaaarty...." and I want you to replace
California with Winchester. And repeat.

Sometimes I feel like the world is telling me that I'm on the right track. I definitely felt the love in Winchester for the Hey Bro! Productions led St. Valentine's Dub Massacre. Featuring One.Man.And, KJ Sawka and Chronicles of the Landsquid, Valentine's Day at the Virginia Brewing Company
was one for the books. We sold several prints and three painting,
including one created that evening (hopefully we'll get a picture of it
soon...my camera's flash has dedicded to die for whatever reason). I
really can't thank you guys enough for an amazing night of music, art
and new friends...thanks a bunch to Hey Bro! for everything they do. I
got a chance to talk with KJ Sawka for a minute as well so that was
pretty cool. This guy is an amazing drummer. I'm glad I've gotten to
see him perform a few times over the last year.

We'll definitely be back at the VBC for a few shows in April and beyond...be on the lookout!

Here's
one that I created that night...it was a continued canvas...one that I
had worked on at Stonehenge Music Festival last summer but I felt
wasn't complete.

One Man's Every Day Love: Painted live to One.Man.And and KJ Sawka on 02/14/09 @ The Virginia Brewing Company for the St. Valentine's Dub Massacre

The following night found me in Baltimore, MD for Basshound's tour closing show at the 8x10.
I brought up a canvas that I started at IS in Charlottesville the prior
Thursday. I hadn't finished it because the party got the best of me on
this particular evening. Amusingly enough, I jumped up on stage that
night and added some interesting flavor to one of Basshound's tunes
(much to the amusement of the band and bemusement of myself the next
day).

http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/61/l_bc45f408313c4ac7a3560ce6f1732e0c.jpg

This was my second stop at the legendary 8x10 and
I have to say I really enjoyed seeing the guys in their native setting.
I plan on sending the owner of the club a print from the night if I
ever get it captured. Along with Data Frogs and Jazzam, Basshound put on the night in style to a packed room, bouncing floor and all.

Here's the painting I worked up during Jazzam and Data Frogs

FunkBoxJazzFrog.jpg picture by crazyredbeard

Funk Box Jazz Frog: painted live to Jazzam and Data Frogs on 02/15/09 at The 8x10, Baltimore, MD
24x30
$300

And here's what was worked up for the Basshound set, started on Thursday 02/12/09 and completed on 02/15/09

Hometown Hound Jam: painted live to Basshound and Grey Matter on
02/12/09 @ Is Dancehall, Charlottesville, VA and Basshound on 02/15/09

$400

So what's next? This weekend finds us back in Richmond, VA at the Canal Club for another EQ Produktions
throwdown. I'm happy to say that I'm forging a nice relationship with
these guys and they continue to put on AMAZING shows in the Richmond
area. They evoke echoes of a goneby era at The Flood Zone, when you
could hit up a raging punk show for less money than it takes to buy a
pack of cigarettes these days (so I hear). The vibe is the same. A
group of fans and promoters that are trying to bring their favorite
music to their home spot. And that music happens to be edgy,
underground and somewhat shared within a certain subculture.

Please
contact me if you want a matted and framed print of the painting Beat
Home Bass which I created to Orchard Lounge at the Canal Club the last
time around. They'll be going for $60. You can always tell me to have
certain prints ready for you as well...it helps me be ready with the
right merch, plus, I love talking to you!

So....what's next...OH YEAH!!! I'm painting with The Heavy Pets
@ The Tribeca (in the Omni), Newport News, VA on 03/07/09, post Phish.
So please be on the lookout for me there. I think I'll have to work up
a pretty nice one for this particular evening. Feel free to contact me
to commission this one of a kind live, performance painting which will
definitely mark a piece of history in the books for me.

Speaking of Phish...I seem to have worked up a little triptych for
the three nights at Hampton! I take these canvases to the photo shop
tomorrow for capturing. I'll have costs available soon (as soon as I
get the images and take them to the printers).

Please let me know if  you'd like to pre-order any of the posters
individually or as a triptych. These will be printed in a limited
number for each night, signed and number to commemorate this historic
reunion!
AND WE STILL NEED HAMPTON TICKETS!! IF ANYONE KNOWS OF ANY, PLEASE LET US KNOW!! WE NEED 2 FOR EACH NIGHT!

(k thx!)

Dear diary...last weekend? It rocked harder than a room full of grandmas. Yeah, diary. It really did.

Why?

Oh, I'll tell you why. We got to kick it back up the east coast to join our good friends from Roy Hobbs Agenda and Juggling Suns at the Stone Pony on Friday night. On Bob Marley's birthday, no less. It was really good to see Jordan Simms and Chris Pedersen
again (from former Breadbox Band fame) and Roy Hobbs was pretty
amazing...their tunes are well crafted and very spacily jammed out.
They pull off the type of musicianship that makes you forget what song
you're in. A Marley medley of Soul Shakedown Party->Mellow Mood with
guest guitarist sit in by Mark Diomede (from the Suns) was very
appropriate and definitely influenced my color selection for the
evening. I threw in some rastas in honor of Bob's bday (a fellow
Aquarian!!!) and named the painting in his honor...

JugglingSunsStonePony020609.jpg picture by crazyredbeard

Marley and the Stoned Pony.

Painted live to Roy Hobbs Agenda and Juggling Suns on 02/06/09 at the Stone Pony, Asbury Park, NJ

30x40

$750

Getting to see Juggling was great as always and it's been awhile so it
was refreshing. Aliens went into the painting as well as some glow in
the dark paint provided by the best clown I know, Larry Phunston who
handed out party whistles for all of us to use in between tunes (which
we did). He does some amazing light work with LED wires (at least
that's what I think they are). Because of him and Roy Hobbs, I also
added a hidden, psychedelic clown in the painting (RHA played Stuck in the Middle With You). I love this job on the for reals, ya'all.

Diary? I think everyone should take a minute and visit Brianne Diomede's website
on the other for reals. Why? Because she's amazing and awesome and
super batik-stylie talented. And she also paints live paintings which
are really fun and influence me every time I paint next to her. She
made us a custom comforter with a peacock on it! And it's effing rad!!!

And she also gave me a present for my bday when we left on Saturday. I
had sent her an image file earlier this month and she made a t-shirt of
it!!!! Here's a pic of me with the shirt on...you might recognize the
image. I'm going to figure out how to have these for sale REAL SOON.

It's The Conduit shirt! And that's me and Pete Mason, father of the Phanart project...a 420 page book of art created by Phish fans which was recently published. I'll tell you more about the evening in a second.

Okay, you can't see the image that well, so here it is, diary. Because
you won't stop whining about how you want a clearer view. But I don't
mind yo whining, diary. I got mad loves for ya.

conduit1.jpg picture by crazyredbeard

Yeah...you were right, diary. It was better to post the actual picture.
Did I ever tell you that a print of that work is in the Disco Biscuits
recording studio in Philly? I didn't?? Well now I did.

So many thanks to Brianne and Mark (and the wonderful AZ!), Jordan,
Chris and the rest of RHA and Juggling...Barry, Drew, Johnny Bud, Dolla
Jill, Tatum, Betho, Larry, the Stone Pony (who put up with us having a
ton of stuff there) and everyone else we got to see again...thanks for
making our stay at the Jersey shore an exceptional experience. I love
those phreaks!!!

Saturday saw me and the J-love swing up to Troy, NY for the book publishing party at Revolution Hall.
As mentioned above, Pete put this book together over about four years
and finally got this labor of love completed. They donated all sales of
the book over the course of the evening to the Mockingbird Foundation.
We set out a bunch of art, including to Phish related pieces that were
included in the book. I created live paintings for both the McLovins and The Flow and will be making a limited edition run of both paintings together, matted and signed or something of that nature.

McLovephish: painted live to the McLovins at Revolution Hall in Troy, NY on 02/07/09

(
Prints of this painting are now available!!! 10x13, black
frame, matted to 8x10, signed, titled with venue and band name, $60!
Other print sizes available...see bottom of the page
)

Hey Diary...did I tell you the the McLovins are three young men
aged 14 and 15?!?!? The guitarist is freaking 14!!!! And he shreds!
These guys play their own original tunes, as well as many amazing
covers (Weather Report, Clapton, etc). They gained almost instant
notoriety via the web when they posted a Youtube video of themselves playing YEM and jamming the absolute hell out of it. I say again. Four. Teen.

The Youtube YEM is arguably better than post hiatus Phish. These guys
have many years to develop into the rockstars they'll become and they
looked like they were having a blast onstage. Two of the members,
including the drummer (Drumlovin...Jake Huffman) had been sick with the
flu all week but they played like champs. Jake couldn't even talk, let
alone sing, but they did their thing like true professionals and nailed
even the hardest progressions nearly flawlessly.

When they closed their set with YEM, I wrote on the back of the canvas,
YEMcLOVINS and held it up high for the crowd to see and the audience
began cheering wildly. It was awesome. I did that one for the kidz, yo.

Jake's Mom is buying the painting, so sorry for those of you that were
interested. They told me they'd be hanging it in the basement where
they record their videos, so my work will be on display for the world
while these up and coming kids revolutionize the genre. You'll see.

The Flow came up next and provided two sets of Phish, which gave me the
next best thing to painting with the band on stage. It was really fun
to create on this particular evening, especially considering that Phish
and the Phish fans, really, had inspired be to really want to pursue
artistry as a career. Now here we are, painting on stage for a book of
Phish fan art and I have to admit that the feeling is one of utter
astonishment. That things work this way, that the road unwinds in such
a way...that God smiles and we all say Boy! Man! God! Shit!!

Their sets made me giddy for Phish's return. Here's the painting that resulted...

Mockthunderbird: painted live to The Flow at Revolution Hall in Troy, NY on 02/07/09

(
note lot stickers Hood and Godfather/Divided Sky-Join the Phamily)

24x36

$400

Whew!! What a weekend of music! Thanks to everyone at Revolution
Hall, especially the staff who were incredibly accomodating. Thanks to
Meg, Greg (both of you!) and Ryan for everything and for hanging
out/being cool cats.

Also, we got to meet Jack Lebowitz from the Mockingbird Foundation
so that was really cool, too. I spoke with him about possible doing
prints of the nights paintings to raise money for the organization.
Diary...you'll be the first to know if that pans out. I promise.

Sunday saw us in Philly (thanks Brett and Rel!!!) where we ate great
Indian food and perused South Street. Monday was bday dinner with the
fam and last night, Basshound
let me drunkenly freestyle on the mic! Why? I don't know!!! Diary, I'm
telling you, it is never a good idea for ya boy Redbeard to do shots
before the show. Never! So you better tell people not to buy them for
me. I'm going to continue the work I started last night on Sunday at
the 8x10. They play wrap up their winter tour on this particular
evening, so it should be a rager.

Also, come out to the Virginia Brewing Company for the St. Valentine's Dub Massacre on Saturday...guaranteed
good time, featuring- Kj Sawka,Chronicles of The Land Squid, DJ ARCEE
and One.man. I'll have paintings on display and for sale as well as
lots of prints and other goodies. And, of course, will be painting.

Finally, along with McLovephish, I got two other captures today, so I can now make prints of the following paintings...

Beat Home Bass: painted live to Orchard Lounge at the Canal Club in Richmond, VA on 01/23/09

Happy Hallowqueens and Kings: Painted live to the Travis Elliot Band
and Kings of Belmont on 10/31/08 Halloween!!! @ Rapture in
Charlottesville, VA

And I'm making up some posters for the Phish shows at Hampton...reserve
yours today! I'm making a limited run of each night...here's the
progress so far, soon to be completed with another alien themed third
panel...it's a triptych!!!

AND! I'm painting on Saturday night, 03/07/09 with The Heavy Pets, post Phish in Hampton. I'm also painting The New Deal
at the Norva on 03/21/09. Guaranteed to be amazing. March is going to
be like the NBA of painting for me. And I'm rootin' for the Nuggets.

 More dates TBA!!!

Peace and love to one and all and thank you for the recent support!!!
Your purchase of all things art makes these performances possible so
THANK YOU, ONE LOVE and GOD BLESS!!!!!

With last weekend at Charlie's Smokehouse with Raw Dawg a great success, we set our sights on the Jersey Shore tomorrow. Happy to be back amongst the Phanphest crew

we join good friends The Roy Hobbs Agenda and NJ Jam masters, JUGGLING SUNS.
Again, I'm bringing a full arsenal of paintings to the Stone Pony in
Asbury Park, NJ and am glad to set my feet back on the boardwalk of
Jerz.

Please contact lynn@royhobbsagenda.com or jordan@royhobbsagenda.com for tickets.

Saturday finds us in Troy, NY at Revolution Hall for the Phanart
publishing party...many, many artists will be on hand to display works
and various efforts will be made throughout the evening to benefit the
Mockingbird Foundation. I'll be painting for The McLovins (these guys are like 15!! And they shred YEM!!) as well as The Flow.
I have two paintings represented in the Phanart book and would love to
see you guys out to celebrate my first text published images. THIS EVENT WILL BE WEBCAST!! If you tune in from 7PM-2AM on www.jamgoods.com,
you can watch the event from the comfort of your home. And guess what?
I'm pretty sure you'll see yours truly rocking some canvases to the
bands. Pagangang!!

Also: JUST ADDED: CRB will join THE HEAVY PETS
on Saturday, March 7th at Tribeca in the Omni for a post Phish
throwdown. I'm very blessed to be able to join this amazing group for
what is sure to be an eye opening occasion. J. Garcia and Kris D.
will also be on hand painting the entire event (while I'm painting
solely for the Heavy Pets, at this point). This, of course, is a huge
deal for me. Can't wait to see you there.

So that's it, kids. Basshound next week in Charlottesville, VA at
the IS VENUE. And oh yeah! Monday's my birthday so send me some love
beardlings!

01/31/09:
On the cusp of the first of February, at 11:29 pm, the last day of
January 2009, I gaze over the precipice and ponder what it means to
fly.
The first month into being an actual, self-sustained artist has
been completed. I managed to paint 7 new works over the course of the
month and I do believe this party’s just getting started.
The Virginia invasion has begun, which is actually a bit backwards,
since I’ve lived here all of my life, yet I seem to have honed my chops
on the Jersey Shore, in New York and at various out of state festivals
and events. Rarely in the last three and a half years, have I painted
bands in Charlottesville, my home town. But I recently vowed to change
that and the movement seemed somewhat logical now that I don’t have a
steady paycheck. The travel will continue, the art caravan WILL
ride…just a little more cautiously.
So January was a month of Virginia shows, split nearly evenly
between Charlottesville and Richmond. New Year’s Eve found me at the
upstairs dancespace of Si Tapas, a restaurant which has taken the place
of the old Starr Hill venue. The upstairs is coyly called Is and I’m
happy to see that it’s been revamped, with a much better atmosphere,
but still as much cigarette smoke as ever. Jeyon Falsini of Magnus Music
does a great job of bringing in really solid musical acts, though
C-villians have missed the mark attendance wise recently in my
estimation.
Still, the room gets pretty full and at some shows, such as the Weapons of Mass Production
led 2020 Soundsystem show back in December, the place is what it should
be. What it was a born to be. An intimate music venue where people
leave sweaty and a bit doused with beer perhaps…perhaps with dilated
pupils, perhaps not. A place where 2 Skinnee Jays once had to stop
their show, because the audience had danced so hard that the floor
freaking CRACKED (since repaired, since repaired).
We rang in the New Year with hometown alt-punk-art rockers The Falsies and the NYC based band Peelander-Z.
Peelander-Z describes itself as “Japanese Action Comic Punk” and that
pretty much does them justice. They were eating when we pulled up our
gear and they introduced themselves. They were wearing street clothes,
but these three Japanese gentlemen introduced themselves as Peelander
Red, Peelander Green and Peelander Yellow.
The Falsies warmed it up and got the local fans going with a lot of
tawdry banter, costumery and general thrashing. Lance Brenner, the
drummer, came out in a chicken suit, hence the painting displayed
below. By the time they left the stage, the medium sized crowd was very
happily chanting for them and preparing for midnight.
Peelander-Z took the stage in full rock, super hero style. Their
songs were ridiculously uplifting somehow…ludicrous, funny, simple and
danceable. The crowd chanted along with the band’s sometimes
purposefully repetetive lyrics. It was pretty awesome, actually.

I can now say that I’ve witnessed a Japanese Action Comic Punk band. I live a very interesting life.

The next night found me back at the same spot, upstairs at Is. Asheville jamband Modo
happened to be running through their winter tour and luckily hit
Charlottesville. I highly recommend checking these guys out. They
sample a bit from a variety of sounds, from traditional tunes to
smoking covers to their own polished seguing jams. It was my first time
meeting these guys as well, much as the night before with most of the
Falsies and all of Peelander-Z.

I’d love to post the photo of the work, but thanks to Tim, I don’t have
it anymore! Tim picked up the piece on the spot. It was a psychedelic
elephant…I remember thinking about elephants all that day for some
reason, leading up to the show. It basically fell out of me and onto
the canvas…it amazes me these images seem to form themselves with
little help from me. At least initially.
Two days later, I shot down to Richmond to paint for Modo again at Cary St. Cafe.
Cary St. Cafe is a quaint joint and I think I’ll be painting there
again soon for some reason. They get a lot of good acts coming
through…the bar is small but it lends to the atmosphere. It’s hard to
paint there, but doable. Below is the result of that evening. It
references the covers Mad World and Working On a Building, an old traditional song that I remember Natural Breakdown
playing on my 30th birthday in Staunton (I remember this particular
song because Natty sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to me along with the entire
bar in the middle of this tune).
I’m not sure if the band was watching the development or the
painting or not, but about halfway through the show, Modo busted out a
Talking Heads song…cosmic connection, Divine tickle. God smiles.

Modo returns to Charlottesville on March 11th. So recover from the
Hampton Phish  shows and come to Rapture to see these guys. Defintely
worth it.
After a brief respite, we charged back to Richmond for Sci Fi, Former Champions and new favorite, Basshound.
I met Basshound earlier last year and have enjoyed several shows with
them since…they provide pretty funky inspiration and it’s always a good
time when the co-mayer of Blake town (Blake Mobely, keys extrordinaire
and shareholder of my name) and the rest are around.

Thanks to the Canal Club for being so accomdating…I’m hoping this venue becomes a mainstay for me.

Slated for an evening with the Kings of Belmont and Raw Dawg
on the 16th of January, I took the week off, chopped a lot of wood for
the woodstove and worked a few days with the kids at the Shelter for
Help in Emergency (I do art with the kids about twice a week there).
The day before the show, Will Faulconer, Raw Dawg’s percussionist,
messaged me to relay some tragic news: R. S. Hornsby had passed away
the night before in a fatal car accident. The same R.S. Hornsby that
I’d watched shred China Cat Sunflower onstage at the Wolf Trap
alongside his uncle (yes, Bruce). The same R. S. Hornsby who was an
integral part of the Charlottesville music scene and, to me, had
nowhere to go but up due to his established talent and burgeoning
musical complexity.
The Kings of Belmont called off for the gig, but Raw Dawg decided to
play on in R.S.’s memory, rounding out two sets of solid music +
encore. I ended up painting a trumpet (horn) and a bee…my symbolic take
on “horn”s(bee).
Then…Orchard Lounge in Richmond on Jan. 23rd was a face melter. EQ Produktions
knows what they’re doing by bringing in the quality and volume of music
to the RVA. We set up paintings all along the back wall of the Canal
Club and had merch galore. Over 650 people showed for the event and I
got to paint next to Strictly Mental, a very talented artist from the
Baltimore area. Check out his work here.
I focused my intention on change through love and peaceful,
conscious effort, giving a nod to the band’s Chicago roots and making a
mental connection with the recent inauguration of President Obama. What
resulted is something I’m quite proud of and thanks to the many of you
that shared kind words over the evening.

Orchard Lounge gave me mad props for the painting, which was very nice and won’t be forgotten soon.

Thanks to Bryce for the after party as well…we appreciated having some decompression time before heading back to the Chardiggs.
Finally, this past Friday saw another Raw Dawg show, this time at
Uncle Charlie’s Smokehouse in Crozet, VA. Unfortunately, Uncle
Charlie’s is closing due to some legal issues which is unfortunate for
a number of reasons. Primarily, it’s a nitty gritty music venue where
locals get together and hoot and holler for an entire evening. The
crowds are always on point at these shows, whether the people are there
to just get drunk or if they showed up to see the music.
I’d love to show you the painting from this show but it was sold to
Amy from Richmond (thanks!!). I also sold the painting from the last
show (the R.S. painting) to a friend of his and shared a pretty nice
story with in the process.
So thanks to everyone who’s supported live art this month! Big things are on the horizon!

Thanks to Bryan from Cool Springs Baptist Church in Mechanicsville, VA for this opportunity. It's basically their youth group's logo along with Rev. 7:9...it'll eventually have the scripture incorporated into the picture.
Rev. 7:9: After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb

Hey guys...just wanted to drop you a line and invite you all out to my first gallery showing in NYC at ICO Gallery THIS FRIDAY. Melanie Prapopoulos is exhibiting a solo show in conjunction with a group showing called "Traces of Memory," which is the show that I'm included in.
This is a really big opportunity for me and could pave the way for future showings in NYC, as well as perhaps secure me a toe hold in the NYC art world.
It would mean a lot to me to see you all there...I'd love to share this mile marker with each and every one of you.
I'll be writing another mass mail soon to share some of the most recent works, including two newer pieces entitled Dogma To Her and 2020 Vision. I've been quite busy since the last newsletter, so I have a lot to share with you, including plans for the new year, 2009, which I heretofor have dubbed THE YEAR OF THE BEARD.
All joking aside, though...please come out on Friday and help me create a buzz in the NY art scene...let's shake things up together and show the world that independent artists are something to pay attention to!!!
Free wine, food and beer (I think the event might be sponsored by Brooklyn Brewing Co.as well).
Thanks for all of the support so far...this event, in my opinion, could never have occurred without the love, encouragement, good tidings and friendship of each and every one of you.
The painting I'll be exhibiting is a piece created to New Jersey's own, Buzz Universe at World Cafe Live in Philly earlier this summer and is called, This Is What Love Looks Like.
This Is What Love Looks Like
God bless,
Jon

And just because I love you...a painting created to 2020 Soundsystem last week in Charlottesville, VA, 11/25/08 that I called 2020 Vision....
