DAY
ELEVEN STARTS WORK ON 3rd
ALBUM
Finnish
alternative rockers Day Eleven will start recording their new album
in a peaceful Finnish countryside cabin. The band will handle the
production duties on the recording sessions, and Forrester Savell
(Karnivool, Helmet, The Butterfly Effect) is slated to mix the
record.
”The
album is our most varied bunch of songs yet, we have lots of new
exciting ideas and approaches. I think it's also easily the most
accessible stuff we've ever done. Not that we tried to pull any weird
stunts to get hits, but I just feel there's something in these songs
that might connect with people pretty well”, says the band's singer
Janne Pajari.
The
band's previous album Sleepwalkers was released in the spring
of 2007 on Gbfam Records and Dockyard1. After the release Day Eleven
has played over 70 shows in Finland and Germany. Songwriting for the
new album started already in the beginning of 2008.
”It's
been awhile since the last one came out, time goes by surprisingly
fast. Though at this point we can say that it's been time well spent.
We are really well prepared to knock this one out. ”
”..think
Faith No More or the diversity of the old Black Sabbath records.
Think R.E.M. in a particularly bad mood. Think Nirvana trying to play
Type O Negative covers. Sort of an "anything goes" approach
going on, but there's the overall mood keeping it all together",
says the band.
Matador
will be released in Finland on January 20th
2010.

DAY
ELEVEN ALOITTAA KOLMANNEN ALBUMINSA ÄÄNITYKSET
Kotimainen
alternativerock-yhtye Day Eleven aloittaa kolmannen albuminsa
äänitykset maaseudun rauhassa Suodenniemellä. Levyn
taltiointi hoidetaan bändin omassa ohjauksessa, ja miksauksesta
vastaa australialainen Forrester Savell (Karnivool, Helmet, The
Butterfly Effect).
”Tulossa
on selkeästi meidän monipuolisin ja höyrypäisin
levy. Välillä helkkää mandoliini, välillä
tuplabasarit, mutta biisit on kuitenkin tiiviimpiä ja iskevämpiä
kuin aiemmin”, bändin
laulaja Janne Pajari sanoo.
tietty yhteinen tunnelma”.
Edellinen
Day Eleven -albumi Sleepwalkers julkaistiin keväällä
2007 GBfam Recordsin toimesta. Levyn julkaisun jälkeen yhtye on
kiertänyt mm. Suomessa ja Saksassa seitsemänkymmenen keikan
verran. Bändi aloitti uuden materiaalin säveltämisen
jo vuoden 2008 alussa.
”Ikinä
ei olla oltu näin valmiita studioon mennessä, ja materiaali
aiotaankin purkittaa reilussa kahdessa viikossa. Se on suhteellisen
järkevä aikataulu verrattuna vaikka meidän ekaan
levyyn, jota näprättiin melkein vuosi”, bändi
kertoo.
Matador-nimeä
kantavan levyn julkaisupäivä on 20.01.2010.

August update - Dog’s Home, Tampere / On The Rocks, Helsinki / Henry’s Pub,
Kuopio
Hey there.
We played
some good shows a couple of weeks back, check out the sights and imagine the
smells from the photos below.
So, the
summer’s coming to its end (well, not yet but SOON). We took a little time off
in June, did some practicing and a couple of shows in July and right now there
are some new song ideas brewing in our heads that we’ll try to get ready before
we settle on which songs will appear on the next album. We got plenty but
there’s always room for one or two really really really good ones.
So
basically, unless some of us manage to drink, drug & drool ourselves out of
our minds first, you can expect our next blog entry to tell you quite precisely what
comes next – when we will hit the studio, when the new shit’s gonna be out etc…
yeah, I know that’s the same rap we’ve been giving you for gods know how long
but this time it’s FOR REAL and there are ACTUAL PLANS BEING MADE and we’re
very close to being READY TO GO!
Ooh yeah,

Dog's Home 24.08.09
Coming home from Helsinki, the exhaust pipe was giving us trouble - nothing a handyman l'uomo universale like Matti Lötjönen couldn't handle. Luca helps and Kimmo chills out, probably drunk: Yeah: Kuopiorock afterparty 1.8.09. We played pretty well and all but since the showtime was so fucking early (the main festival Kuopiorock was still on), there weren't too many witnesses. In any case, we had a good time and managed to be on fire and get to play encores, so what the hell: On the way home the next day: Simo "Onnen-Virnu" Stenman was road tripping with us and once again he showed who's the boss by beating us all at "merimiespaini". Olli meddles, no fair play here. The loser: Time to cool down somewhere near Jyväskylä: -thanks for the photos: Venla & Riina-

Yowsa.
Jesus F. Christ, the summer is here, and I'm feeling it. Sitting in Sorsapuisto writing this and catching some rays, not bad.
What's up right now is this: We spent the month of May demoing & (near-)perfecting our newest batch of songs at Cosmic Studios and at our practise pad, Herrain Shakkikerho. The third album is taking shape pretty nicely, and we decided to let you in on the scheme by uploading a couple of tunes for your listening pleasure. After all, it's been fucking ages since we put out anything new, so as to prove we're not dead or lazy or anything, here you go! Check them out, sing along and let us know what you think! One thing to keep in mind of course is that this is NOT the final product, but a taste of what you can expect from us in the near future. Who knows what we can still come up with before we enter the studio "for real" later this summer.
As usual, you can scroll down to go through our latest random bullshit storm from the studio and some pics.
Summer is crazy, have fun, catch you later

JANNE: At Cosmic Studios. The plan is to record demos of the 12 best new songs we think we've got, to see where we're at right now considering the next album or some such release. It's headphone soundcheck time. Most of our clothes are still on and there's not one beer in sight. Let's see how it all works out. We should be pretty familiar with all the songs at this point so a quick in 'n out trick is hopefully the case today. 10 hours of work and minimum busting of our balls, maybe? We'll track the vocals later this week.
15:32
JANNE: Monday To Someday in the can except some minor fuzz overdubs and lead gtrs. Then: fore!.
18:06
KIMMO: Let's see if we'll do 12 songs in 10 hours... seems like a lot of work. Hard concentration eats the brain. Still no open beer bottles. Matador felt better without a click. Thankfully Matti is handling Pro Tools. Time for a quick snack now.
OLLI: Air conditioning has to be turned off while recording is on. Oxygen level drops as temperature rises. This is causing sort of dullness and weakness as well.
18.16
LUCA: Three songs have been recorded, feels good. Lisää kahvia, ei tarvi ku koko ajan käyä kusella.
19:02
JANNE: Snack break is over. Food-mute is a fact. Gotz to try, still. Next song is Kuovi.
21:06
KIMMO: I dunno how many songs done... feeling good for the first time today. Promised myself not to drink before all recording is done. Finland - Canada hockey match will begin soon.
OLLI: Fucking hockey. We had a deal that the internet shall not be opened but everybody has already broken the rule. Matti and I just opened the first beers. So things start rolling. I have relatives in Canada, Jimmy was born there, we have maple syrup in stores and I saw Melissa auf der Maur live last November. What that means...I dunno.
21:54
KIMMO: We're all guilty, addicted to internet or alcohol. 12 steps?
00:01
JANNE: Song 9/9 to go.
01:00
JANNE: Success. Now let's pack our shit up and continue in a couple of days.
01:02
OLLI: I'm almost proud. I guess we're a pretty good band nowadays and even somehow more sober. But that doesn't mean that I haven't been a major bummer lately.
KIMMO: Finland beat Canada. Wonderful. Melissa hope you're not mad?
1:08
Luca: Damn I'm proud. Nice day, nice songs and now beer. Feeling pretty tired, but good. I've been so busy with the drums that I had no time to write here. Can't wait to hear the songs ready.
MAY 8-10, at our practice pad:
JANNE: Olli & Matti had to fix some last week's guitar fuck-ups (there were plenty, esp. out of tune stuff). I sang 2 songs (Monday To Someday & Kuovi) and tried my best at shredding a guitar solo for a thrashy number called Räs. Had some beers and got merry. We also managed to make an impromptu appearance on stage on Saturday night at our friends' b-day party. We played some Nirvana tunes +got a request to do one of our new ones, Caravan. Matti played drums, Olli played bass and me & Kimmo handled the rest. Luca was boozing somewhere else, the bastard. Now, a day off and we're gonna continue with the recordings on Tuesday. Going fine so far.
MAY 12-20
JANNE: Olli's back from Helsinki, we recorded a song called Caravan (all acoustic), did some additional guitar wank and Kimmo had to redo some bass tracks which didn't take too much time once we got his cheap-ass woodblock in tune. Finished the vocals, which ended up sounding really really good without too much teethgrinding IMHO. We came up with all the vocal melodies & lyrics for a brand new song "Locust Flight", and it sounds great, definitely gonna be on the album if you ask me. The other brand-newie, which shall remain nameless at this point, sounds pretty lame-ass. But who knows how it's gonna end up, it's pretty catchy and all so if we can breathe some life into it at a later time, maybe it'll be worth something.
MAY 22-23
JANNE: Finishing the mixes at Matti's place. Plus we did some overall EQ-ing, mastering or whatever (don't ask me) at Cosmic Studios one evening, which meant me & Kimmo sitting around smoking constantly and Matti fighting against the rise of the machines, smoking constantly. In the end we had 10 new songs ready... which means probably 70-90% of the album is now written, depending on how we feel about the tunes in a couple of weeks time, and whether we can come up with some worthy new shit during the summer.

April 10its 5:30 PM and i'm at home waiting for our show at Kustaa III (pretty close to my place) later tonight. I can't really stress enough the fact that this unplugged thing is so fucking great for us. the songs live and breathe and we go with the flow, the arrangements aren't very strictly thought out (as they usually sure as fuck are... everything), somebody starts a song and the rest of us follow. the only downside to this that i can think of is the fact that it's almost too easy get into arguments at the practice pad when there isn't all that constant 110dB noise going on. i mean, we've been picking fights with and fuck-you'ing each other even during the songs, not just the breaks. but ha ha, that's a part of this thing as well as all the easy-going times. we sound better than ever, so who the fuck cares how we feel, like Kimmo once put it... and we're feeling pretty damn good actually. i'll try to take a nap now, catch you later when we've played the show. -janne-
April 13Playing acoustic shows has always been fun, this time around too. There's no pretense in the music or the performers, you just sit down and play some songs for the people, a very simple thing. Feels very refreshing after all the noise we usually make, and really makes us fall in / out of love with some songs that work differently in a more basic rock band -form. Listening to Hazards of Love from The Decemberists, sounds awesome. It's also mainly acoustic instruments and not very rocky stuff... hmmm. Maybe we should do an acoustic album too. Well not really. We're going to record some new demo/promo songs in a couple of weeks, really looking forward to that. Lots of good songs. Maybe we should think about giving some out for you to listen, after all it's been fucking ages since we put out any new material? We'll try to figure out something. -kimmo- PSst!: studio reports with vids & pics coming soon... soon after that, new music

Current mood: knighted
We had a nice productive couple of days last week playing a show at Klubi plus rehearsing for the acoustic show which will take place this Friday at Kustaa III here in Tampere. What can I say, the Klubi show wasn't without its problems, at least for me since IMO I managed to fuck up some of the songs pretty royally singing-wise... you know, the usual stage-sound-was-crap-and-my-voice-was-pretty-shot-because-of-that-blah-blah bullshit, but what the hell, we rocked the house and put a smile on the people's faces and premiered two brand new songs that night, so mission accomplished. The next three days were spent nursing our ever-evolving hangovers at our rehearsal room, playing stripped down acoustic versions of our new & older songs. It's pretty rewarding to go through your material with everything stripped down to the basics, i.e. melodies & chords & simple beats, and still realize they're very good and in some cases much better than the originals. We trimmed a lot of fat off of the new songs as well, which no doubt will help us put together the upcoming album in the best way possible.
Lazy afternoon jam, April 3, 2009 at our place:

Olli spots a pink elephant, Matti faces the facts and is angry at life:

So if you're able, come to Kustaa III and find out for yourself, it's gonna be great I promise. Olli's gonna bring his cello, bouzouki & whatnot plus you'll hear some stuff we'll probably never be playing again... like Hells Bells unplugged.
Any suggestions, anybody?
catch you later,
-Janne & D.E.-

............ Well, sorry for being so lazy with updating this thing lately. We're still not dead or anything, we're working on our new songs all the time and working on getting to the studio sooner or later. Check out the interview below (by rockbaari.de) to get a more detailed view of what's up with us. The new songs... there's a lot of varied stuff for sure and they just keep coming. Think Faith No More's King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime. Think Black Sabbath from Electric Funeral to Planet Caravan, think punk, think Pink Floyd. Think R.E.M. in a particularly bad mood. Think Nirvana trying to play Type O Negative covers. Death, happiness, boys, girls. That's what it is. My own favorite song of the bunch at the moment is this one called "Silent Shudder", which is a cross between Myrskyluodon Maija and the big N's Scentless Apprentice. It sounds so fucking ridiculous that it just has to work. Sort of like us deliberately trying to stuff every song we've ever made into one piece. Totally unexplainable lyrics that still take me places. We'll probably play this one at our next show, should be fun. Come to the shows and hear for yourself: Thu 02.04. Klubi, Tampere, +White Flame, Parasite City (6 €, K-18) Fri 10.04. Kustaa III, Tampere (UNPLUGGED, FREE ENTRY, K-18)
Day Eleven showtime for both nights is 21:00.
-JANNE- ****** MARCH 2009 INTERVIEW by ROCKBAARI.DE 1. According to your Myspace Diary your third album will be recorded later this year, what can we expect from it? JANNE: Probably a bit of a mix between our two previous albums, you know, the melodies and the moody atmosphere of our debut combined with the heavy rocking of Sleepwalkers. With a lot more hooks than before. We're not pulling any punches, it's gonna be very diverse. Some blastbeats, some acoustic songs, the whole shebang.
KIMMO: Hopefully it will be an interesting listen. The records I love the most are diverse, have a unique sound and personality, and the songs are great and catchy without sounding labored or over-thought. I think we're aiming for that kind of thing. 2. How’s the work going so far?
JANNE: We're currently sorting out the business side of things, the budgeting etc. That's the one load of bullshit we have to get out of the way before we can enter the studio. But yeah, we have lots of great new songs written and there's more coming still. Pre-production & demoing.
KIMMO: We've been writing for a while now and it's going well, at this stage it's about making the record amazing instead of just good. We've achieved the good and are inching towards amazing, hehe.
3. Did you already choose the name of the album and your debut single?
JANNE: Nope.
KIMMO: Album: All I Want, first single: Shine.
JANNE: Wow, you can't get more basic than that... Maybe this time we should use "We're From The Country Where Lordi Lives", which was the working title for the previous album.
4. Will your album be released in other countries as well?
JANNE: Let's hope so, I'm pretty sure it will be.
KIMMO: Of course it will be, and nowadays that we have Spotify I think these things about releases here and there are becoming pretty redundant.
5. If you think back, when you have recorded the songs for your first album: What is/was different this time?
JANNE: Most of our debut album's songs were written by me and Kimmo at our rehearsal studio over a long period of time. Nowadays, since Olli joined in 2005, there's four guys writing and also, we try to make the songs really work as a five-piece band. It's more of a group effort, more spontaneus. The recording itself, as well.
6. Will you work with Jens Bogren again or will you choose another producer?
JANNE: We're trying to get this pretty well known Finnish dude to produce us, but I won't name any names yet in case it falls through. He's interested, we're interested so let's see what happens.
KIMMO: I think it won't be Jens this time around...but we're not sure who it's going to be.
JANNE: Lordi, perhaps? 7. Do you plan to play some shows in other countries than Finland this or next year?
JANNE: Absolutely, there are some German shows being planned at the moment and we'll let you know as soon as we get them confirmed.
8. You have already published two albums, how do you feel about it? Are you happy with the things you have achieved so far?
JANNE: Could have done better, could've done worse. Of course I'm proud of what we've accomplished so far, since we started with absolutely nothing years and years ago. But we're still looking for that "one big break", if you know what I mean, and as long as we're happy together pursuing that dream I guess everything's fine.
KIMMO: I feel good about what we've done, lots of great experiences and memories. The music has gotten better all the time and that gives a lot of enthusiasm to keep playing.
9. How did your families, friends react when you told them that Day Eleven is more than an ordinary school band for you?
JANNE: This band stuff has been a huge part of our lives since we were fifteen so they've just had to live with it, I guess. They've been supportive, big thanks for that, even though this shit gets pretty silly sometimes and certainly doesn't pay the bills even though it takes most of our time.
10. What was your worst gig ever?
JANNE: Filling in for Jann Wilde at some charity event in Hämeenlinna 2007, no soundcheck, 15 minutes on stage instead of 30+ we were promised, everything all fucked up including Matti's amp which was dead for the first two songs and the sleaziest, assholiest, motherfuckingest douchebag in Finland, Janne Kataja announcing us on stage with the most embarassing choice of words imaginable, wrong place, wrong time... shit like that is always an experience that teaches you a lot, though. Boy, did we suck but the conditions were not helping.
11. What’s your favorite song of your own last 2 albums? And why?
JANNE: From Almost Over Everything it's the title track, and from Sleepwalkers it's Dissonance Fading. Everything just clicks on those two, the lyrics, the production, the good memories from when we were writing and recording them.
12. Think 10 years ahead: where would you like to be?
JANNE: On tour somewhere, and hopefully still having a full head of my own hair...
13. How do you spend an ordinary weekday?
JANNE: Lately it's been like this: wake up at noon, think about getting a real job, get some caffeine in me, hang around at home listening to music, playing guitar and maybe cooking, go to band practise at around 6 PM and once in every couple of days go to Dog's Home after that, get loaded and talk about Jane's Addiction, Syd Barrett or Izzy Stradlin with Olli.
14. Males and Make-up: yes or no? And why?
JANNE: If you dig it, go for it. It looks pretty bad if you don't wear it with pride, though. 15. Can you give us three things you absolutely don’t like doing? (Like laundry or ironing, for example)
JANNE: Discussing music. I really hate it but I do it all the time after three or four beers. I mean, music should be experienced personally through listening, you can't talk someone into liking an artist you like yourself. It always ends the same, you know, "Dude, Blind Melon fucking rules", "No no, Tuomari Nurmio is better."
And the same goes for our own songs whenever we try to decide if some part works or not. The discussion goes nowhere, and you either feel it in your guts or you don't. The situation usually ends up with someone saying "Everybody shut up, I'll decide this one." Which is alright.
Things number 2 & 3 that come to mind right now are: jogging and waiting in lines. Washing dishes is fine...
16. Can you imagine taking part in a TV reality show?
JANNE: Depends on what it would be about.
17. What’s the best thing for you at the moment?
JANNE: Listening to Elliott Smith and reading Robert Harris' books.
18. Do you have a message for your fans?
JANNE: Hang in there, you will hear new music from us pretty soon and you won't be disappointed.
thanks for answering and taking your time :)

HEY DUDES!!!!1 what's UP!!!.photo: Jarkko Heinonen / Argohoo.com We spent the last weekend at our practice pad demoing new songs. They sound good. You'll hear the best of them... soon. I can't think of anything else to say about it, check it out and judge for yourself:That means that new album is getting pretty close to being written... just a little squeeze away. So hang in there. Here's a recent interview from metalfromfinland.com you might wanna check out:http://metalfromfinland.com/interviews/402We played a couple of pretty good gigs last month with Molly Grows Up in Helsinki, Turku & Tampere, respectively, as well as a surprise stint at Vastavirta-Klubi here in Tampere with Miss Monster Truck and Nugget Nemesis (Rommel!! lol!1), both of which you should check out. 'Cause they're great, that is. Some pics and our vague memory traces can be found below.-janne-******06.09.2008 Gloria, Helsinki, Finnbands Rock.JANNE: Not too many people there, but the few that attended seemed to really be into it so yeah, we had a good time. We we're the last band on the bill that night so surprise, surprise, all the booze backstage was already gone when we had played. Everybody knows that's like the worst thing that could happen, man. So we were devastated but I think we learned something that day. Get what you can while you can and run. Boo-hoo. KIMMO: Basic stuff here... we tend to play well when nobody's watching.OLLI: Exactly. The best part was our promotional pictures that we tried to take earlier that day. We found out that boozing three days in a row before that isn't the best idea, at least I found out. The afterparty was kind of fun: at Lostari and then in my place; hazy memories, weird moments. Photos: Finnbands.com, except where noted 18.09.2008 Semifinal, Helsinki.JANNE: It was a pretty good day I remember. A good show, encores and all.OLLI: Great gig, cool afterparty. Next morning we made delicious stuffed pancakes and had a couple of beers with Luca and Matti, so Kimmo was only one left to do the driving to Turku. (He wasn't that happy, but thanks anyway)photos 1&2: Marjo Pajari photo: 'spanish team' This is what was apparently going on after the show. Thanks to Spanish Team Who Loves Olli Sopanen's T-shirt for the illustration: 19.09.2008 Klubi, Turku.JANNE: A hangover-from-hell day. I was panicking my ass off backstage until the showtime, but once we got onstage I was surprised to find out that I wasn't gonna die or fall into pieces after all. It was the best show in ages in my opinion, great crowd, Turku we love you.KIMMO: Hungover from the day before, trying to get your body & mind into some kind of a shape to be able to play - so far I think that's been the most reliable recipe for a good show. Worked here as well.OLLI: As I said before the couple of beers did the trick: I felt fine the whole day. One funny thing was this 'Pirates of the Baltic Sea' environmental project launch party at Tavastia club. Couple of ciders and sandwiches there too while we were packing our gear.Photos: Petri Vilén / Huumakuva.net 24.09.2008 Vastavirta, Tampere JANNE: So, we weren't supposed play here in the first place, but in the morning we got a call from the Miss Monster Truck guys asking if we wanna fill in for Dolly's Diamond Bra (check them out) who had to cancel their slot. 'But of course', said we, and off we went. Small crowd, weird boogie, the beer was good but Olli couldn't stand the garlic olives backstage. KIMMO: Nugget Nemesis was entertaining, on- and offstage. OLLI: I hate 'em olives but like the place. 25.09.2008 Klubi, TampereJANNE: Great sound (kiitos monitorimiksaajalle), good times, played a newie called Isokuovi for the 1st time ever, took a sauna, got happily wasted, a great night out in general but where the fuck was everybody?KIMMO: Nice and all but was missing the element of a spectacle. Well, next time will be better.OLLI: Great night over all. Felt weird to get on the train (totally wasted) at 6.30 A.M. heading back home to celebrate my girlfriends birthday.photos: Argohoo -d.e., 8 Oct 2008-

Well hello honeys...
Here's what's up in Day Eleven Land at the moment:
Yes, we are still in the process of writing more and more new material with our upcoming third album in mind. We do have a lot of songs (maybe half of the album) written but we want to push ourselves as far as we can to make sure the next one is fucking perfect, and that we really have something important to say. We want to take the time to see all the possible directions we can take ourselves in, and make some decisions later when we have lots and lots of inspired stuff to choose from. We are working with the deadline of March 2009 in mind, but don't take that for granted, it can change either way.
We will be hitting the studio at the end of the year if all goes well. Before that, we've got some shows to play here in Finland, at which we'll be putting many of the new songs to the test. So, in order to be among the blessed first to hear the wonderfully titled tunes Mormon Whore, Parmesan, Isokuovi, Uskis and Laimea Paska among many other future favorites, get your ass to:

Oh, and one more thing:
OUR OFFICIAL WEBSITE ADDRESS HAS CHANGED TO:

So remember to update your links & bookmarks. I know, I know... there's nothing there yet, but the new website is on the way. Until then, check out our Myspace for everything you need to know about us, and as always, a lot of crap you didn't even want to know. Like the pics and shit below.
Love & pisses,

Lithuania, July 2008:
After breakfast in Vilnius, July 4th 2008. Luca's vomit just out of shot.
 Moody Finns sightseeing.

A wall. And a sightseeing Finn. Statue of Frank Zappa just out of shot.
A patch of Lithuanian grass. And I dunno some guy I guess.
Climbing the Gediminas hill to the Upper castle.

 Kimmo perceives a park.
Oh yeah, the show. Well, what can I say, we played a fiery show to a couple of dozen crazy drunken people in the middle of a forest just before the sunrise. It was pretty weird... we had fun, and the audience was lovely. The stage was set pretty cool, sort of half a barn as you can see. Live pics taken by Vemalas (http://public. fotki. com/advansas/pragaro-ausra-2008/).

After the show. Making friends, getting happily wasted. Sopanen's passing out with a fresh drink in hand, Kimmo's falling in and passing out by the river and Janne's vomit just out of shot.

Next day at the airport in Riga. The check-in was pure hell but the smiles never left our faces.

Thanks for the good times Nino and Santa, our driver, and all the other good people we met.
see ya,
-janne & d.e.-
