-Orphaned Land Launch Redesigned Web Site, Reveal New Album Cover Art

On February 9th (January 25th in Europe) Israel's Orphaned Land will
release their highly anticipated fourth studio opus THE NEVER ENDING
WAY OF ORWARRIOR. Mixed by Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree, Opeth), who
is also responsible for several keyboard parts on the new album, the
album turns out to be a sophisticated concept album taking Orphaned
Land's unique brand of exotic, heavy music to soaring new heights in
terms of complexity and catchiness.

Parallel to revealing the album's cover artwork the band presents you
its newly redesigned Web site at Orphaned-Land.com and check it out!

Kobi Farhi (vocals) comments on the artwork by Zen Two & Native as
follows: "Even in the album's artwork we combined Hebrew and Arabic,
regardless of the fight between Jews and Muslims. I found a Jordanian
guy, specialized in calligraphic artwork. He took letters from Hebrew
and Arabic and moulded them in his art to create a symbol of peace.
The whole artwork is mainly hand made as we are tired and a bit sick
of too much Photoshop in many works. I truly believe that the work
these guys did for us is something really special and we are very
lucky to have it. You will soon see that simply every page of the
album's booklet is a masterpiece!"

Furthermore, a brand-new webisode allowing a look behind the scenes of
the photo shoot for the band's striking new promo pictures has been
posted on Orphaned Land's official YouTube channel.

On the new promo photo and the resulting reactions, Farhi states:
"It's been two weeks since we launched our very controversial band

few discussions on it all over the 'net. However, I also noticed that

Now this is the place to exaggerate, to tell you about the three best
players in the world who finally gathered to form the best band in the

We live our lives, the same as you do. But every now and then
something happens, that forces its way into our minds and ends up in a

Gerald Krampl, born 1954 in Vienna, Austria, started his musical
career in his youth by first taking classical piano lessons. In the
'70s and '80s he formed two prog rock bands, Kyrie Eleison and Indigo,
which gained a high reputation worldwide in the prog rock circle.
Gerald played keyboards and wrote all songs for these bands, and
several L.P.s, CDs and singles were successfully released. The company
Indigo Music was founded in 1983 mainly to market these own band
works, but soon this was expanded with various side projects ranging
from disco to folk, which were produced in the own studio for various
record companies.

After a break from the music business for some years, he started in
1999 together with his in 2002 due to a cancer desease late wife Hilde
a new project -- Agnus Dei. Inspired by their yearlong experiences
with Reiki (master degree), Runes, Blossoms and Meditation, this
project combined their two skills by creating spiritual fantasy tales
expressed through all-instrumental music on the audio CDs, and Hilde's
unique poetry in the "value-added" CD booklets. Gerald's compositions,
in a neo-classic piano and keyboard orchestrated style, are often
compared to the spiritual instrumental musings of Michael Hoppe, David
Lanz, Vangelis, Andreas Vollenweider or Rick Wakeman.

Many critics also emphasize, that the instrumental melodies are not
simply "light and fluffy" as so many other New Age recordings are, but
possess serious substance and show remarkable keyboard skills. In 2006
followed a new musical challenge, with an emotionally very intense
electronic/neo-classical soundtrack work, for an educational Internet
and TV documentary about the Holocaust in World War II -- very
recommended to visit in the web at http://www.31Projects.at/ , which
was also released 2007 in an expanded version on CD -- 31PROJECTS -
THE MUSIC.

As somehow an antipode to this very dark and sad music, you can see
his follow up solo work, which has finally been released in winter
2008 -- settled between electronic and prog rock in a kind of "vintage
style of the '80s" it is best to describe as "electronic soundscapes
for mind movies," titled TIMEDIVER. Using only vintage sounds it is
also a kind of reminiscence to his former prog rock days. But there
was still evident a strong concern with meditative, healing music, and
therefore Gerald has also released early in 2009 a CD with spoken
classical fairy tales (in German, by Corinna Steinbock) combined with
especially composed relaxing piano based music. This album is mainly
sold in family hotels as branded CD, kindergartens, etc.

Out of the lot of material composed for this project, immediately
developed the idea for a new solo album. But this time with the effort
in mind to keep away from all commercial and genre orientated
concessions, stay as minimalistc and close to the roots as possible
(only piano + max. two more synthetic strings), and also to try a
combination with electronic and nature sound effects which should add
something like a soundtrack effect to the whole. Another aim was, that
this music should become easily to perform live in a trio version,
which is a plan in mind for the near future. Influenced by people like
Preisner, Max Richter, Ludovico Einaudi, Erk Satie, etc. the album
INNOCENT WASTELAND is now the result, and is released in December
2009.

It has become a somehow dark and melancholic, nearly to say concept
album about the endless cycle of destruction and reawakening around
us, to categorize somewhere between classic, minimalism and electronic
Andreas Pflanzl, the producer of the "31Projects" documentary, has
done the cover artwork for the CD, and also immediately used some of
the music for his brand new Web project -- http://www.7minuten.at/
(with the topic "Disability"). The cooperation with him will lead to
some interesting new film and web projects in the future.

-Bison BC Enter Recording Studio

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada-based doom metal band Bison B.C.
will be entering the studio this month to start recording their
follow-up to QUIET EARTH which was released via Metal Blade Records on

respected engineer/producer Jesse Gander (3 Inches Of Blood,
Subhumans) at The Hive Studios in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.

East Of The Wall is excited to announce its new lineup. Joining the
band are guitarist Chris Alfano and drummer Seth Rheam. Both played in

guitarist Kevin Conway. Due to the merging of the two bands' lineups,
all music created by the aforementioned collective, along with
guitarist Matt Lupo, will be released under the name East Of The Wall.
This will include the release of the group's next record,
RESSENTIMENT, due out next summer through Translation Loss Records.

With this lineup change, East Of The Wall has parted ways with
original drummer Mike Somers. The band would like to thank Mike for
his outstanding musicianship and hard work since the inception of the

-Twisted Sister was on A&E's "Private Sessions" this past Sunday
morning. The band performed "We're Not Gonna Take It," "I Wanna Rock,"
"The Price," "30," and "Oh Come All Ye Faithful," and Dee Snider sat
down for some interview segments. It was a good show, and Dee was
funny as always, but you could tell the interviews were severely
edited down for time -- I'd love to hear them in full. The final
segment featuring his whole family -- wife Suzette, three sons,
daughter -- was particularly eye-opening because...well, um, wow is
Suzette hot. Atta boy, Dee. There was another funny segment early on
where Riki Rachtman busted Dee for missing a motorcycle ride at the
Sturgis motorcycle rally this past summer. Check out a "behind the

-Anyone want to buy me a ticket to Sweden for Christmas? I want to go
to the Sweden Rock Festival next June. The (admittedly wayyyyyy) old
school bands they've been announcing will make for a killer lineup.
I'd totally dig seeing Raven, Anvil, Y&T, Magnum, Aldo Nova, Ratt,
Saga, and W.A.S.P. together. Seriously, did somebody set the Wayback
Machine to 1984/1985 here? Jorn and D-A-D are good picks, too, but if
this trip is going to work for me then I'm going to be picky and
demand D-A-D not play any stuff released after 1992's RISKIN' IT ALL.

-Okay, so, it's really cool Judas Priest got nominated for a Grammy
but for "Dissident Aggressor?" That tune is 32 years old. Don't get me
wrong here -- I love the song and I love the nominated version from
this year's A TOUCH OF EVIL - LIVE, but I just don't get it. How are
these nominees chosen? What are the criteria?

-Looking forward to that Acacia Avenue album. Torben Enevoldsen is an
underrated guitarist, and I'm optimistic singer Tony Mills will
rebound from his missteps with TNT.

-Here's hoping Ronnie James Dio gets well soon so he can resume
flooring us all with his amazing voice.

-In my current playlist: Rob Halford - "Silent Night" (single), Gods

Man, here's another one of those outta left field releases that has me
rethinking my strategy. I was never a huge House Of Lords fan back in
the day, because they seemed too prepackaged/safe/poofy or something
for my tastes, and I didn't really get on the reunion bandwagon the
last few years due to disinterest. Perhaps I made a mistake. This new
disc CARTESIAN DREAMS is fantastic; it's solid from top to bottom and
is a complete album which I love in these days of short attention
spans, iPods, and the "single mentality." The songs are a potent mix
of arena/cock/blues rockers and ballads with ample guitar highlights
and crafty keyboard shading. The opening title track had me scratching
my head upon first listen, as the main riff is *totally* copped from
Judas Priest's "A Touch Of Evil" -- I kept thinking, "Wow, really?
House Of Lords ripping off Priest?" -- but it's a great, ominous
beast. "Never Look Back" and "Desert Rain" are in the same vein; they
are crunchier, heavier tracks that fly in the face of my earlier
dismissal of the band's light-weight nature. Elsewhere, "Born To Be
Your Baby," "Bangin'," and "Joanna" are classic arena rockers designed
for the live setting, "The Bigger They Come" has a wicked chug/gallop,
"Repo Man" has a bluesy swagger and sexy, wailing female vocals, and
"Sweet September" and bonus track "The Train" are a pair of nice
ballads. CARTESIAN DREAMS is a very impressive release that fans of
Whitesnake, FireHouse, Dokken, etc. will dig, and it'll surely be up
near the top of my "Best of '09" list. (And one more thing -- get a
load of the "whoooooooa ohh oh" part in "Joanna." I defy you to hear
this song and *not* immediately get Y&T's "Contagious" in your head.)

RAVEN (UK)
Raven from Newcastle is one of the most legendary and long-lived bands
from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Centered around brothers
John (vocals, bass) and Mark Gallagher (guitar) they delivered well-
crafted and, for its time, delightfully brutal music on their first
three, classic albums ROCK UNTIL YOU DROP (1981), WIPED OUT (1982) and
ALL FOR ONE (1983). And excepting a more melodic, U.S.-courting period
in the mid '80s, Raven have continued to deliver bona fide heavy
metal, disregarding musical tends -- to the delight of their fans. An
accident in 2001, severely injuring Mark Gallagher's legs, forced the
band to take an extended, but in 2009 they returned with the new album
WALK THROUGH FIRE. And in 2010, it gives us great pleasure to welcome
one of the great names of British metal to their SRF debut!

Back for more! Ratt to Sweden Rock!

RATT (US)
They brought down the house at SRF 2008 -- now Ratt, one of the
biggest glam metal bands in history, return to Sweden and the
festival. In the '80s, the band were the main competitors of Motley
Crue, creating a multitude of classic tracks like "Round And Round,"
"Lay It Down," "You're In Love" and "Wanted Man." Then came an
extended period during which Ratt came and went with ever-changing
lineups, none of which came close to the stature of the original band.
Order was restored in 2007, when the band resumed touring with three
of the five classic members, including vocalist Stephen Pearcy. And in
April 2009 Ratt signed a new record deal with Roadrunner, where their
highly anticipated comeback album INFESTATION will be released Spring
2010. No doubt about it anymore, the band is back and they're hungry
again!

In rock we trust! Y&T to Sweden Rock!

Y&T (US)
San Francisco's Y&T caused a sensation within the metallic underground
when they released EARTHSHAKER in 1981. The album, and its successors
BLACK TIGER (1982), MEAN STREAK (1983) and IN ROCK WE TRUST (1984) are
all timeless classics with an equally melodic and aggressive heavy
metal sound and songs from the top drawer and then some. Sadly Y&T
never played in Sweden during this golden age, so the expectations
were immense when they finally arrived at SRF in 2003. The performance
was a resounding success, which repeated itself on the band's return
the following year. And now guitarist/vocalist Dave Meniketti, bassist
Phil Kennemore and guitarist John Nymann, accompanied by (relatively)
new drummer Mike Vanderhule, will return to the scene of this double
triumph -- at about the same time as Y&T's first new album in 13 years
(!) sees the light of day.

British pomp rockers Magnum enjoy a massive cult status in Sweden,
where the band earned their all-time biggest chart-success when the
WINGS OF HEAVEN album made it to #2 in 1988. Many a Swede wept
bitterly when Magnum, debuting with KINGDOM OF MADNESS in 1978 and
also responsible for such monumental records as CHASE THE DRAGON
(1982) and ON A STORYTELLER'S NIGHT (1985), decided to call it a day
in 1995. Not surprisingly, the band's return to Sweden at SRF 2002 was
a triumphant success, later cemented with more seminal records,
including PRINCESS ALICE AND THE BROKEN ARROW (2007) and INTO THE
VALLEY OF THE MOONKING (2009). Guitarist/songwriter Tony Clarkin
remains at the helm, with competent assistance from keyboard wiz Mark
Stanway, bassist Al Barrow, drummer Harry James (of Thunder repute)
and -- lest we forget -- ever-soulful vocalist Bob Catley.

Four years on from the critically acclaimed HORDES OF THE BRAVE Iron
Mask are back with their most potent release yet in SHADOW OF THE RED
BARON. Home to a fine collection of melodic neo-classical tracks, this
album is full of first class material from start to finish. Chief
songwriter and guitar virtuoso Dushan Petrossi's particular focus this
time was to create superb songs first and foremost where the excellent
musicianship only lift the music to an even higher level.

SHADOW OF THE RED BARON is home to 11 tracks which deliver melodic
neo-classical metal yet is accessible enough for fans of traditional
metal and power/symphonic metal to get into. Each of the 10 vocal
tracks feature addictive vocal melodies in the verses and choruses.
Dushan's virtuoso musicianship is stronger than ever here serving up a
feast of metal treats. The lone instrumental "Ghost Of The Tsar"
offers up something different with its aggressive vocals used to
complement Dushan's majestic fretwork.

Once again the stunning vocals of Valhalla Jnr are heard on the
majority of the tracks whilst Oliver Hartmann has a guest lead vocal
on "Dreams" as well as contributing to the backing choirs on the other
numbers. New permanent drummer Erik Stout (Reign Of Terror) has added
a solid backdrop to all tracks with Petrossi commenting "Erik is a
real powerful drummer, I like his groove a lot, his tom files are like
earthquakes, and he's the perfect guy for the melodic tunes we have on
SHADOW OF THE RED BARON." A new keyboardist in Andreas Lindahl (Narnia
/ The Murder Of My Sweet) is also present adding deft touches and
fluid solos to the album whilts long term member Vassili Moltchanov
still anchors down the bass. Finally Lars Eric Mattsson has a guest
spot with his guitar solo being heard on the third guitar solo on
"Sahara."

On the album Dushan comments, "Once again there's a mix of epic
tracks, melodic and neo classical numbers all with great musicians and
vocalists, I'm very happy with the choruses of all songs, they stay in
your head and this is really what I wanted. Nowadays it seems like
bands have forgot how to write good songs, which is for me the most
important thing."

In the run up to the albums creation Dushan endured a long family
member illness followed by the passing away of his mother, this
affected the lyrics and this emotional aspect can be heard in "Forever
In The Dark," "My Angel Is Gone," "We Will Meet Again," etc. However,
there are also the expected epic stories for the likes of "Black
Devil," "Resurrection" and the title track. The album was produced by
Dushan and mixed and mastered by Jen Bogren in Sweden at Fascination
Street Studio (Symphony X, Opeth, etc.). Artist Eric Phillipe again
produced a visually grabbing piece of artwork around the idea of the
title track.

In addition a promotional video has been filmed for "Forever In The

be available on the limited edition first press only CD/DVD dual pack.
The DVD is also home to in-depth interviews with the band as well as a

Acacia Avenue is a new band led by Danish guitarist and songwriter
Torben Enevoldsen (Section A, Fatal Force) in the melodic hard rock
mold and features vocals from Tony Mills (TNT, Shy), Geir Rönning
(Radioactive, Prisoner) and Torben Lysholm (Pangea, Mysterell) with
drums by Thomas Heintzelmann (Section A, Decoy) and bass from Carsten
Neumann (Savage Affair). Home to a clean punchy production, the album
is rich in catchy vocal melodies and strong songs.

The style of the album is a blend of melodic hard rock and AOR. Torben
spent most of 2008 writing new music with different people and some of
the songs went in this direction. He then decided to pursue this
particular style and ended up with around 20 songs and ultimately
chose the best ones for what has become the debut Acacia Avenue album.

One the making of the album Torben comments, "The goal was simply to
create a really great album, and for me personally, to try to write in
a different style to that which I'm usually associated with. It was a
lot of fun and a great learning experience. My influences for this
album musically were bands like Toto, Giant, Dokken, TNT, Van Halen
and so on, i.e. Melodic bands with a powerful element to them."

Tony Mills (TNT, Shy) was the first to join in and together they wrote
and recorded "Don't Call Me Tonight" and "Wait No More." Geir Rönning
(Radioactive, Prisoner) began writing with Torben immediately after
and together they penned the songs "Hold On," "No Looking Back" and
"Digging" whilst Torben Lysholm (Pangea, Mysterell) wrote the lyrics
for "Just Wanna Be With You" and also sings lead on "Can't Make You
Stay." Finally Lars Säfsund (W.O.A.) did the vocals on "An Illusion."
Apart from playing all guitars, bass and keyboards on the album,
Torben Enevoldsen sang backing vocals on a few songs and also did the
lead vocals on "Jamie's In Love" and "Let Go." Thomas Heintzelmann
(Section A, Decoy) played all the drums and Carsten Neumann (Savage
Affair) helped out with the bass.

The mix was done by Torben Enevoldsen at Funny Farm Studios and the
mastering was done by Torben Lysholm at Tune Town.

Mastercastle Set To Return In Second Quarter Of 2010

HolyHell Announces 2010 World Tour!

Andreas Schöwe from German Rock It! magazine recently described
HolyHell's self-titled debut album as "...dark mystic melodic rock
with classic appeal of the utmost grace." And now, hot on the heels of
such accolades, HolyHell will hit it live, unleashing this apocalyptic
masterpiece of a concept album on audiences across the globe as they
embark upon an extensive international tour. The quest begins in
January 2010 with a series of indoor concerts across Germany as
special guests of Magic Circle Music label mates Manowar. Further

The much anticipated new video from the Devin Townsend Project, "Bend

Last Autumn's Dream - A TOUCH OF HEAVEN

Swedish/ German Melodic Rock band Last Autumn's Dream are back once
again with a brand new and exciting album. This is their seventh
studio album and they have proved time and time again they have what
it takes to become top of the melodic rock genre. The talented four-
piece consists of singer Mikael Erlandsson, axeman Andy Malecek,
drummer Jamie Borger and new member Nalley Pahlsson on bass. Nalley
has replaced original bass player Marcel Jacob, who sadly passed away

Human Temple - MURDER OF CROWS

Finland's premier melodic hard rockers Human Temple are back! Their
2004 debut INSOMNIA received rave reviews, and the fans have been
eagerly awaiting a follow-up. The foundation of the Temple was laid
way back in the late '80s, when vocalist Janne Hurme and drummer Petri
Lehto formed their first band. The guys were highly impressed by Kiss,
Dokken, Crue and the likes, so the style of the music just had to be
hard rock, yet always with a keen ear for a good melody. After an
initial buzz created via local gigs and the Internet, Human Temple
were signed to the German label MTM Music, and their first album saw
the light of day in the summer of 2004. Marquee Avalon released the
album later that year in Japan. The next years passed quite fast, and
the band went through a few lineup changes. In the summer of 2009,
they felt that the time was right for album number two. With a little
help from some friends like Jani Liimatainen (ex-Sonata Arctica,
Cain's Offering), Erkka Korhonen (ex-Urban Tale, Ari Koivunen band)
and Vesa Virtanen (Twilight Guardians), they created a worthy
successor to INSOMNIA. MURDER OF CROWS stays true to the sound of the
debut, while adding some new elements to it. Next to the band's highly
melodic AOR anthems such as "Just One Night," "Ghost Of You" and "What
About My Broken Heart" you'll find some more metallic tracks, flat-out
hard rocking and even atmospheric pop-rock.

-Always have time for some random Kiss stuff... Last Sunday's paper
had an article about Casablanca Records, with quotes from Kiss' former
manager Bill Aucoin and hype about former label exec Larry Harris'
book entitled "And Party Every Day: The Inside Story of Casablanca
Records" (recognize the title?). The article goes on to mention Kiss'
ill-fated early '70s performance at a label party in Los Angeles, the
success of ALIVE!, and the flop of the four 1978 solo albums. Check it

-My 4-year-old loves "Phineas And Ferb" on the Disney channel, and we
recently picked up the soundtrack CD. It's mostly kid-friendly pop
stuff but there are a few rockin' (and quite catchy!) tunes, including
Robbie Wyckoff's "He's A Bully," "Ready For The Bettys" by The Bettys,
and the show's theme, "Today Is Gonna Be A Great Day" by Bowling For
Soup. If you're stuck in the car with the family on a long holiday

-Our cable TV lineup just got rejiggered, and on one of the new
channels I stumbled across the bad '80s flick "The Dungeonmaster,"
featuring a live performance and hammy acting job from W.A.S.P. The
scene has the hero walking into a club show where the band is playing
"Tormentor," and the guy has to rescue his girlfriend from Evil
Blackie Lawless who has her tied up to the rack on stage. It's quite,
quite lame, and the hero basically just ends up zapping all the band
members into oblivion using a goofy gauntlet/wristband gizmo. Still,
it was cool to see this again after 20+ years.

-I've been watching the "Full Throttle Saloon" reality show in truTV
the last few weeks. In case you missed the press release a while back
it's about a huge biker bar that's only open each year during the
Sturgis biker rally, and Jackyl's Jesse James Dupree is involved. It's
interesting to watch the bar's owners stress out over concerts, bad
weather, keeping the liquor license intact, etc. Check it out, and see

The aptly-titled CATHARSIS -- the band tragically lost its female
vocalist Sabine Duenser before its last album, 2007's GRIEFSHIRE, was
released -- is a stellar comeback for Liechtenstein's goth metallers
Elis. Sandra Schleret has stepped admirably and capably into Duenser's
shoes, and while the band employs the "angelic female/demonic male"
dual-vocal technique like so many other European bands, it's not so
operatic and it doesn't feel tired or unoriginal. CATHARSIS is a
potent, intriguing mix of mid- to up-tempo metal songs featuring the
aforementioned vocal stylings (with the female vox clearly as the
focal point) and quality guitar work. Elis can play it heavy (I hear
smatterings of Doctor Butcher, Megadeth, and Helloween in "Core Of
Life," "Twinkling Shadow," and "Des Lebens Traum - Des Traumes Leben,"
among others), soft (the acoustic-based ballad "Rainbow"), and
somewhere in between (the rocking "Firefly" and "Warrior's Tale," a
duet with End Of Green's Michelle Darkness). They can even adeptly go
commercial -- "I Come Undone" (apparently a cover; I've never heard
Jennifer Rush's 1987 original though) is an absolutely *killer*
melodic hard rock song that should be all over the radio. (And extra
points for the homage to Accept in the intro.) Other highlights
include "Morning Star" and "Mother's Fire," with a special nod to the
latter's use of male vocals from bassist Tom Saxer -- he bursts out
with "FIRE!" in the choruses. It's a simple thing but it's also great
contrast to Schleret's lead vocals. And back to Ms. Schleret for a
moment... She's done a phenomenal job stepping into what has to be a
difficult situation, and anyone who can sing this beautifully in both
English and German is a rare talent! Definitely check this album out,
and keep your eyes open for the limited edition version that has two
bonus tracks ("Ghost Of The Past" and "No Hero" plus a bonus live DVD.

Okay, let's be honest. When this project was first announced a few
months ago, you all hated the idea, didn't you? As soon as word hit
the streets that the Metal God was doing a Christmas album(!),
Internet message boards around the world were immediately lit up
like... well, like Christmas trees, with countless fans screaming, "Is
he serious? Dude, this is gonna totally suck. Has Rob completely lost
his frickin' mind?" But hold on y'all! WINTER SONGS may not be the
waste of plastic that you're all imagining that it is. In fact, it's
been growing on me with repeated listens, like the fungus on that
Christmas fruitcake that's been passed around my family for what seems
like several generations now. (Haha!) Longtime Halford fans will
probably recall that this is not Rob's first foray into Holiday music;
back in '93 he recorded a promo/fan club-only Christmas single
("Christmas Ride") with his then-current band Fight, so right there
we've got some precedent for this sort of thing. What the hell, I
guess ole Rob just really, really digs the Christmas season and since
he now runs his own record label to release his solo stuff and
therefore he can pretty much do whatever the hell he wants with that,
he has decided to share a little holiday cheer with the rest of the
headbanging world. Is there anything really wrong with that? On WINTER
SONGS, Rob and his solo band tackle six traditional Christmas hymns
along with four new original songs with a winter/holiday theme. Of the
originals, the one that's most "Halford-like" would be the leadoff
track "Get Into The Spirit," which is a fast paced rocker that could
almost pass for a B-side from CRUCIBLE. "Winter Song" is the heart of
the album, a plaintive, moving piano ballad (that still has balls of
steel of course) which (call me crazy if you will) hearkens back to
Priest's SIN AFTER SIN era. The other two original songs include one
fair-to-middling entry ("I Don't Care," which sounds like a bad
attempt at the vibe of those classic 1960s Phil Spector rock-n-roll
Christmas singles) and one that's out and out godawful ("Christmas For
Everyone," a slab of sentimental pap with lyrics that read like a
rejected Hallmark card interior). Moving on, I have no complaints
about Rob's takes on holiday staples (including such Church-ified
classics as "O Holy Night," "Come All Ye Faithful," and "Oh Come O
Come Emanuel"), in fact, I was quite impressed with how classy they
sound. Rob made the wise choice of treating these songs with the
respect that they deserve and playing them straight, rather than
tarting them up in tons of studio polish (as Trans-Siberian Orchestra
would've done) or overplaying them for the camp value (Hell-ooooo,
Twisted Sister!)... he simply sings these winter carols the way they
should be sung. Period. Okay, so there may be an electric guitar solo
added on here and there that the original composers would never have
dreamed of, but hey, this IS the Metal God we're talking about here,
after all. Though I expected this to be a "one listen and gone" disc
for me, WINTER SONGS has seen repeated spins in my player since I
first got it and it will likely continue to be played through the
holiday season. It's not a perfect album by any means, and Lord knows
I would've preferred a new Halford release to be jam packed with the
screaming heavy metal we all love Rob for, but I can't deny that
WINTER SONGS has a unique charm of its very own. No one is more
surprised by that than me. Since this is a seasonal release it will
obviously have zero replay value after Dec. 25th (until next holiday
season, anyway) but despite that, I'll still say that it's worth

Lion Music has the shred aficionado on your holiday shopping list
covered with these releases featuring two of the label's most exciting
fretburners, Joe Stump and Borislav Mitic. Joe's album has been out
for awhile and it's worth checking out for fans of killer riffs and
Yngwie-styled shred intensity. Joe unleashes the fury on such
smoldering tracks as "Chasing The Dragon," "Fire And Brimstone" and
"Pistol Whipped," while revealing his Blackmore, Trower and Hendrix
influences on "Blackmore's Boogie" and "Old School Throwdown."
Borislav Mitic departs from the Malmsteen template but incorporates
recognizable riffs recalling Metallica, Joe Satriani, Randy Rhoads and
Megadeth on explosive cuts like the title track, "Within All
Existence," The Prize Of Eternity," and "To One Truth." Borislav
dazzles with plenty of high energy solos featuring modern techniques,
thankfully not abandoning a sense of melody in the process. Okay,
these albums are not going to win any awards for originality, but to
be fair it's difficult to be innovative in this genre at this point in
time. Bottom line, if you're a fan of shred I think you'll enjoy these
releases, as both of these guys get the job done!!!

Slank is a pop/rock band that has been touring their home country of
Indonesia, and other parts of the world, for 20 years. During that
time, there have been several changes to the lineup, but the most
consistent and popular is: Kaka Satriaji on lead vocals and harmonica,
Ivanka Arifin on bass, with Abdee Negara and Ridho Hafiedz both
playing guitar. Bimbim Almachzumi not only bangs the drums, but is the
group's main songwriter and spokesperson. On their MySpace page,
Bimbim says that "Slank uses its music to promote P.L.U.R. (peace,
love, unity and respect) between the world's diverse religious, ethnic
and economic communities." They do stand behind that path for the
band, as their Web site and links prove: the band is active in
Indonesia's fight against drugs, supports animal protection, and sings
about their political views for their country's future. Slank's
influences are as varied as The Rolling Stones and Bob Marley, and
they say their music will appeal to fans of Sublime, Jet, and
Buckcherry. I'm not sure that the fan base for those bands and Slank
will be the same. However, the music of ANTHEM FOR THE BROKEN HEARTED
might be worth a listen for those who are curious. There are handful
of songs on here that could be popular in America. "Devilinu" has the
most potential and is the one I'd release as a single; it has the best
overall appeal with lyrics and music. "I Miss U But I Hate U" is a
close runner-up with a common sentiment, upbeat rhythm, and good hook.
"Caricature" has an interesting sound, with potential to be a one-hit
wonder if nothing else -- think along the lines of "Turning Japanese"
by The Vapors. Slank also put in a good effort on the ballad, "Love
Cursed." However, it may be that there truly is something lost in
translation when you get to "Wake Up Tonight," which is repetitious,
with strange lyrics that are lost on me. With the numerous, varied
online videos for "Do Something," it must be a popular song for the
band, but it has a circus-y sound and seems to be missing a vital
piece to the lyrical puzzle. If you are looking for a little harmony
with your rock, this is not the CD for you -- there is none. Slank did
tour America last year with ANTHEM FOR THE BROKEN HEARTED but there is
little information online on what their current touring plans are.
Would I go see Slank? I'd see them as part of another tour, but I
would not go out of my way to see just this band now, though I am
curious to see what they do as an encore to this release. It might be
worth a listen.

The fine folks at Ireland's Slaney Records have returned with another
12-pack of vicious (but oh so tasty) old school thrash metal goodness
with volume 2 of their "split-CD" compilation series, OUTBREAK OF
METAL. As with volume 1, you get six tracks each from two underground
bands duking it out for ultimate mosh-pit supremacy, and aficionados
of the anti-social will definitely get their money's worth from this
wrestling match. Poland's Destroyer kicks things off with their
mission statement "Rip Your Brain," and well, that's pretty much what
they do for the rest of their half of this split. These guys are
bullet belts and ripped jeans to the core, relying less on speed and
more on good ole fashioned CRUNCH, sounding a bit like KILL 'EM ALL
era Metallica if Lars and co. had mixed less Diamond Head and a little
more Motorhead into their formula. Influences from other Bay Area
stalwarts like Exodus and Testament can also be heard on tracks like
"Silent Hunter" and the ever-so-catchy "Metal Addiction." My fave
track is the irresistible "Bang The Dead," with its addictive chant of
"Bang! Bang! Bang, motherf**kers!"... if that one doesn't get your
head bobbin' you're beyond help. Being that they're from Poland and
English is therefore not Destroyer's mother tongue, some klutzy lyrics
occasionally lend some unintentional comedy to the proceedings ("Every
day is f**ked away... till Destroyer band will play... You cannot wait
any more... you cannot open this door. God damn!" --- uhhhh, yeah,
okaaaaayy!!) but other than that I can find no fault with their brand
of thrash. Hit "play" on these boys and you'll be instantly
transported back to 1988, free of charge. Norway's Violated pick up
the spiked gauntlet where Destroyer leaves off and they're a homicidal
sounding crew in their own right. Two songs in and it's obvious that
they're big-ass Kreator and Destruction fans as this high speed
assault force sounds mainly like a love child of the two German
legends on tracks like "Out Of Focus," "No Chance In Hell," and
"Vengeance Of Time." I'd bet the rent money that Slayer make up a
large portion of each band member's CD collections as well. The vocals
are a little harsher than I usually care for, occasionally leaning
closer to the death metal realm than straight-up thrash vox, but fans
of any of the aforementioned bands should most likely get off on these
rookies/spiritual brothers as well. After 12 rounds of thrash the way
it's meant to be played, I'm now sufficiently pummeled and barely have
enough strength left to raise my devil's horn hand sign. OUTBREAK OF
METAL VOL. 2 is another set of knockout punches from Slaney Records. I
can't wait to see who they'll bring to the ring on volume 3.

W.A.S.P. main man Blackie Lawless is apparently following in the
footsteps of reformed rockers such as Alice Cooper and Dave Mustaine
by publicly denouncing his past lifestyle and embracing God; indeed,
on W.A.S.P.'s latest offering BABYLON, Blackie keeps things heavy but
eschews past shock rock themes in favor of a focus on Revelation and
the Apocalypse. Musically BABYLON hearkens back to W.A.S.P.'s mid-'80s
heyday, especially reminiscent of THE LAST COMMAND on familiar
sounding but potent tunes like "Crazy," "Babylon's Burning," "Into The
Fire" and "Seas Of Fire." There's a cool version of Deep Purple's
classic "Burn" as well, but a cover of Chuck Berry's "Promised Land"
doesn't really fit and should probably have been left off or included
as a bonus track. Blackie's voice is in fine form and his current band
competently delivers the goods; I will say at just nine songs the
album feels a little short and there's nothing here you haven't heard
before but for veteran W.A.S.P. fans there's plenty to enjoy. Crank it
up and get ready for 2012!

-Armored Saint Finish Mixing New Record, Announce Album Title!

Bassist Joey Vera of Los Angeles metal veterans Armored Saint has
issued the following update:

"After six weeks, the new Armored Saint record is done. Well, not
entirely... we still have to have it mastered which should be done in
the next two weeks. So technically, there's plenty of time for more
arbitrary bouts of stress. But all of the tunes have been recorded and
mixed. And I have the dark circles under my eyes to prove it!

"As the producer of the record, I did in fact work very long and hard
on this. But I didn't work alone. Everyone involved worked their asses
off. Gonzo [Sandoval, drums], John [Bush, vocals], Phil [Sandoval,
guitar] and Jeff [Duncan, guitar] all came in and gave it everything.
Engineer Bryan Carlstrom and his assistant John Nuss were the
workhorses who kept up the pace in this session which for the most
part meant putting in 12-14-hour days.

"I can't say enough about Bryan, Nuss and Annette Cisneros from
Tranzformer Studios in Burbank. This is a first-class operation and to
boot, they all gave heart and soul into the project which these days
you just cannot even pay for. We are in much debt with them. Truly
wonderful people.

"The result is just amazing, and I may be hasty when I say that this
may be our best record ever. But all dopes in bands say that right?
Well, this time I think it's true and although my reasons may be
purely personal, I still deem it truth. The songs are great and it
sounds great.

"The title of our new record is LA RAZA which means 'The Race.'

"For all of you tech nerds out there, a few quick bits on how we made
this one: We used nothing but analog gear, most of which was custom-
built by Rupert Neve for Bryan Carlstrom. We hit every signal (drum
mics, guitars, vocals) with custom or vintage analog gear before
recording into Pro Tools. We even used rare vintage amps for most of
the guitar overdubs. At mix time, we mixed on an SSL 4000E console and
went to a one-inch tape reel (one of only two on the West Coast) for
our final masters. Uh... you DO know what tape is, don't you?

"What does this all mean? It means we spit in the ear of the age of
the MP3, teenie, tiny ear bud listening culture that has turned its
back on what it means to experience music. This record is FAT. We
means, obese! Full-on cardiovascular failure stuff! Old school, baby!

"We are finishing up the other crap that goes with making records.
Photo shoots, CD artwork (you DO know what a CD is still, right?),
mastering, the running order of the tunes. After that, we wait until
it is released."

He's back! Aldo Nova to Sweden Rock Festival

Canadian AOR hero Aldo Nova is best known internationally for the hit
single "Fantasy," that propelled his debut ALDO NOVA (1982) to double
platinum status in the U.S. "Monkey On Your Back" off SUBJECT (1983)
was a decent hit as well, but Aldo Nova retired as a solo artist after
his third album TWITCH (1985) sold a lot less than the previous two
except in... Sweden! He has since gained greater recognition as a
professional composer, creating massive hits for artists like Celine
Dion and Clay Aiken. Over the years, he has also released a few more
solo albums, for instance the superb, guitar-oriented BLOOD ON THE
BRICKS (1991) where he wrote most of the songs together with Jon Bon
Jovi. Apart from being a fantastic song writer he is also known for
being a marvelous guitar player. His new album TOO MUCH SEX, due for
release in early 2010, finally brings him to Sweden and Sweden Rock
Festival!

W.A.S.P to Sweden Rock to only play songs from their 2 first albums!

Blackie Lawless & Co. is one of those bands that Sweden, and not least
the SRF crowd, never seems to get enough of. When W.A.S.P.'s eponymous
debut arrived in 1984 Sweden was one of the regions where the band's
glam-laden heavy metal caused the biggest sensation, and where their
spectacular horror show rattled the parental generation the most.
Since then, W.A.S.P. have kept releasing albums that remain popular to
this day, but obviously that earliest period is still very special to
the band's fans. Now here's a reason for them to cheer -- W.A.S.P's
set list at SRF 2010 will consist EXCLUSIVELY of songs from the two
first albums W.A.S.P. and THE LAST COMMAND (1985! Nothing but golden
oldies like "I Wanna Be Somebody," "Wild Child," "Blind In Texas," and
"L.O.V.E. Machine" throughout the entire show -- how's that for a

The Knock Out Festival is reaching its third round. After the first
time three years ago in the Schwarzwaldhalle in Karlsruhe/Germany
(with -- among others -- Saxon and Saga included in the lineup) and

Within Temptation, Helloween, Paradise Lost, Gamma Ray, Axxis and

AEG Live, to revamp the rock festival in 2010. The management team
that created the critically-acclaimed rock festival in Northeast
Oklahoma in 2007 has brought on board one of the most respected
festival producers and promoters to serve as executive consultants of
the festival in a multi-year deal.

ago, we have learned that we need the strength of a major player in

create more depth-of-talent on each of the remaining three days. We

Uncle Slam - SAY UNCLE

One of our favorite '80s crossover thrash albums is being worked on
and slated for reissue in January 2010. Uncle Slam's debut album, SAY
UNCLE, was released in 1988 on L.P. and cassette and featured ex-
Suicidal Tendencies drummer, Amery Smith.

The album was produced by metal veteran Randy Burns who is known for
his work on metal classics such as PEACE SELLS...BUT WHO'S BUYING?
(Megadeth), EXTREME AGGRESSION (Kreator), DARKNESS DESCENDS (Dark
Angel), SURVIVE (Nuclear Assault) and SEVEN CHURCHES(Possessed).

SAY UNCLE also features the timeless illustrations by Michael Seiff
(Suicidal Tendencies, No Mercy, Excel and Wasted Youth). Before
disbanding in the mid '90s Uncle Slam eventually released three albums
(SAY UNCLE, WILL WORK FOR FOOD and WHEN GOD DIES).

We are excited to be releasing this long lost classic on CD for the
first time outside Japan. It has been re-mastered by none other than
Jamie King at The Basement Studios.

Widow - MIDNIGHT STRIKES...TWICE!

New reissue features the newly re-mastered album, original NO STONE
UNTURNED demo, new band interview plus enhanced footage of full eight-
song live set from the MIDNIGHT STRIKES era.

We originally released this album in 2003 and shocked many loyal
Tribunal Records fans by serving up a dose of traditional metal
following the likes of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest with a dash of modern
Children Of Bodom flair.

Now in 2009 traditional metal is making huge comeback, but Widow have
been carrying the torch having released two more album (ON FIRE and
NIGHTLIFE via Cruz Del Sur Records) since MIDNIGHT STRIKES' original
release back in 2003.

Oracle - DESOLATE KINGS: THE ORACLE ANTHOLOGY

Oracle were a North Carolina metal band who released an E.P. entitled
SELAH. It's been bootlegged several times, but this collection will be
the first official release with band partcipation since its original
release nearly 20 years ago!

Oracle features Line Of Fire's Shawn Pelata in his first band. For
fans of classic U.S. traditional Christian metal.

We hope to have new band interviews and possibly some vintage live
footage. This vault seems to be a tough one to crack! We will keep you
posted.

We have some other "goodies" in the works as well, but cannot make
official announcements just yet! We are hoping to make 2010 our
biggest year yet!

Gothic comic book series featuring metal bands hits stores in March
2010

LONDON, UK -- Llexi Leon, the creator of the Gothic comic book series
"Eternal Descent," has inked a publishing/distribution deal with IDW
Publishing, the home of comics like "30 Days Of Night," "Star Trek,"
"Transformers," "G.I. Joe," and many more. The first "Eternal Descent"
issue hits retailers' shelves in March 2010. The series is a classic
struggle between good and evil, inspired by and featuring cameos from
a host of iconic metal musicians.

Leon, creator of the multi-media concept Eternal Descent, began
approaching ESP-sponsored guitarists late last year to create the
"Eternal Descent" comic and has been seeking a publisher ever since.

"It's been a long time coming," remarks Leon. "But thanks to IDW and
Kris Oprisko, who understood the concept right away, (being an
experienced writer, publisher, and bass guitarist on the side!), we'll
be seeing 'Eternal Descent' in stores around the world very soon.
Putting this book together has been a riot. Working with some of the
most talented heavy metal players out there is an endless source of
inspiration and a lot of laughs. Creating the world where my original
characters could interact with iconic players like Gus G and Wayne
Static was a tough balancing act, but when you see these guys torching
zombies and feeding off power lines, I hope you'll agree we got it
just right!"

Issue #1 kicks off the series by introducing Leon's original
characters and sets the stage for their epic battle. Metal bands God
Forbid, Atreyu, Firewind, and Static X, among others, will appear in
Issue #2 and onward, with corresponding interviews included in each
comic.

Leon began making noise in London, England in 2005. His highly
intricate guitar style exhibits the many influences corralled to
create his intense sound -- from classical, flamenco, electronica, and
ambient genres to the more prominent genres of rock and metal. All of
these genres infused to one, Leon has built a cinematic metal fantasia
with his music, which has branched out to a comic book series. His
main aspirations are bringing stories to life through escapism.

Leon utilizes everyday events and his vivid imagination to drive him
to create more avenues for his multimedia enterprise. To prove its
tangibility, Leon, who is responsible for the basic concept artwork,
storyboards, and character design/creation, has assembled a team of
artists through Space Goat Productions, including:

~ Jason Metcalf on pencils and inks, and a driving force behind
detailing the "Eternal Descent" world, who previously worked on "The
Darkness" and "Magdelina."

~ David Rivera will begin inking over Jason's pencils from issue two
and beyond, while Javier Tartaglia and Joel Chua, both veterans of
many Marvel and DC comics titles, provide stunning colors.

Leon also began his own production company, Incendium Records, to
release his first concept album LOSING FAITH and the E.P. THE PHANTOM
OF THE OPERA. This fulfilled Leon's dream of having all Eternal
Descent media developed with the highest standards under one roof.
Leon recently began recording his third CD release with producer Eddie
Kramer (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Kiss) at the helm.

With their roots in the classic rock of the '60s and '70s, Shoot The
Breeze represent a guitar-based rock with focus on great riffs and

With the release of the Ronni le Tekro-produced ANGELS AVENUE in 2009,
Shoot The Breeze, with members Mats Nedberg, Tor Erik Fredheim,
Andreas Baklid and Mats Faugli, proved that they're a band worth
paying attention to in the years to come. ANGELS AVENUE was received
as a very exiting rock 'n' roll release, with a sound that exceeds the
borders of Norway.

traditions of the genre, while embracing the innovation and

Shoot The Breeze has been a highly active band both when it comes to
recording and releasing their material, and as a live act, since they
started up in 2004. Starting up as a trio with Mats Nedberg on guitars
and vocals, Andreas Baklid on drums and Steffen Kjolstad on bass, the
time soon came to add another guitarist. Tor Erik Fredheim got the
job, and it wasn't long before Mats Faugli took over on bass.

A number of minor releases and many live gigs followed, and among
other great accomplishments the band played at the Club Day of the big
Norwegian Oya festival, got air time with two songs the British Sky
Channel Radio, contributed on a CD aimed at the American music
business and played support gigs for big Norwegian bands like
Hellbillies and CC Cowboys.

Another big step for the band was taken in the beginning of 2008, when
dialogue was established with famous guitar legend Ronni le Tekro,
which expressed his fascination for the band's music. A studio session
at Tekro's Studio Studio was booked, with Tekro as a producer.

The result of the studio time with Tekro is now here, and it's named
ANGELS AVENUE E.P. The five-track release is a pure power display of
melodic, riff based rock 'n' roll, and it's been labelled unlike
anything else in Norwegian rock.

The E.P. has created great feedback from both the press and the
business, and the E.P. is currently on its way to the band's
connections all over the world, among others the bands American
promoter which is working on getting the band over for a club tour.

A few month after the sucessful release of their official download
single "The Flow Of Time (Radio Version)" Art Of Infinity now conquers
new territory again and sign with Nick Baldrian's Two Side Moon
Promotions in United Kingdom.

First results of the collaboration with TSM Promotions appeared. Art

By the end of 2004, guitarist Floyd, drummer Felix and singer Matthias
founded a small, awkward band called Nevertrust. The band name was
chosen out of 50 propositions in an Internet voting. As sad stories
go, one band member after another left, even their substitute bassist
Teich and guitarist Albi didn't stay long. By the end of 2006 Floyd,
now being also the singer, was left the sole member of Nevertrust...

However Floyd wouldn't give up -- with the help of his former band
mates he recorded a demo which he used to seek new band members. In
October 2006 drummer Gerry joined the band and due to his (most
useful) contacts bassist Dassi and guitarist Manu stepped in after a
short while. Nevertrust rose like Phoenix from his ashes and sounded
better than ever.

Nevertrust started rocking the world in 2007, when their first gigs
brought positive reactions and lots of fans. By the end of the year
the band recorded their first professional CD INCOMING SOCIETY and
replaced guitarist Manu with the more skilled Hendrix. The following
year Nevertrust played lots of gigs on more than 40 stages all over
Germany. They supported bands like Lacrimas Profundere, Fahnenflucht,
Gorilla Monsoon, Exilia from Italy, The Bridgeheads from Great Britain
and Drowned from Brazil.

Now the band is launching the new year with their brand new CD EYE OF
THE OBSERVER, high-quality song material, a new show, new design, more
gigs abroad and other upgrades. One thing is for sure: you will hear

This film festival favorite played the art house circuit when it

"I wanted to make a '60s movie about an '80s rock star in the '90s,"

"Drop Dead Rock" is a no-holds-barred, rock and roll comedy. A down
and out, rock n' roll band, Hindenburg, kidnap their favorite British
rock star, Spazz-O, and hold him hostage. The problem is, Spazz-O's
ex-porn star wife Holly Everest (Playboy lingerie model Chelsey Parks)
and his back-stabbing manager, Dave Donovan (Adam Ant), can't wait to
get their hands on his fortune, and have hired a hitman to do him in.
Thanks to a media feeding frenzy, Spazz-O's career is hotter than
ever. Enter media mogul Thor Sturmundrang (Deborah Harry) with a big

-Reviolence From Brazil Signs With Marquee Records

The Brazilian band Reviolence (formed after the split up of the old
Brazilian Thrash band Panzer) just signs with the label Marquee Recods
for release the new work, the CD called MODERN BEAST.

MODERN BEAST features 13 tracks and was produced by Mauro Juliany from
Sound Up Studio and will be distribute in some countries like Japan,
Canada, Germany and U.S.A.

The new album features the new singer Rod Starscream and Guilherme
Spilack (guitars), Mauricio Cliff (ex-Panzer and Mystic -- the
Brazilian band from Frank Godzik from Kreator), and Edson Graseffi
(ex-Panzer).

M.A.D. (Maniacal Area Damage) -- that is hard rock at its best, goes
directly under your skin and makes you shout for more. "Pure
entertainment, cool outfits, congenial musicians and a permanent
contact with the audience" 1) make their concerts an unforgettable
experience. "Guitar sounds sharp like a knife edge" 2) and rough, hard
lead vocals "that bear comparison with the former AC/DC front man Bon
Scott" 3) give their songs a "clear handwriting" 4). "It can't be
overseen, that M.A.D. is creating an own unmistakable style" 4) wrote
the newspaper "Donaukurier."

With this style, a mix of classical Hard Rock and Heavy Metal (you
could call it "True Rock 'n Roll") they could convince the audience as
support for big names (f.e. Saxon, Edguy, Bonfire, Shakra, Paul

A further part of their successful live performance are their cover

In the beginning of 2007 the guys of M.A.D. released their first album
called WARNING! The album got very good reviews in the international
press and at the "German Rock & Pop Award 2007" the band was honored
with the first price for the "Best Hard 'n' Heavy Album" and "Best
Hard 'n' Heavy Singer" (signed by Klaus Meine from Scorpions).

Now on June 19, 2009 their second studio album, FOR CROWN AND RING,
for which M.A.D. signed their first real record deal at the label
7Hard, has been released. The label is a division of the 7us
Mediagroup, that has even signed acts like the former Chicago drummer,
Danny Seraphine, the Sweden rockers Stone Lake and the former ABBA
guitarist Mats Ronander with his new Band Stockholm Stoner.

When in 2007 comparisons on their debut with AC/DC, Jackyl or Rainbow
suggested themselves, on the second disc of the guys from Ingolstadt
around shouter Jochen S. Bach, there's no doubt, that it happens to be
a tick harder. Traditional, timeless Hard Rock in the style of the
named before (especially "A Long Hard Road") is more or less still
their favorite business, but also they're poaching in Teutonic areas
of the "True Metal League." When hearing tracks like "Crown And Ring"
or "The Warrior" you get amazed that you're reminded of Manowar or
even HammerFall, what is an additional bonus to make the CD more
colorful. There will no heavy-ear switch to draft; even the opener
"Don't Sell Your Soul" is digging itself into your ear canal with its
catchy refrain and the still razor-sharp, easily shoot-from-the-hip
guitar riffs of grandmaster Robert Mayer are doing the rest...

The super-blues "Bad Boy Boogie" they are coming Extremely dirty,
rough but nevertheless simple out of the speakers; firm riffs that
even help the old Tina Turner rocker "Nutbush City Limits" (with
saxophone solo) to blaze in new glory.

With their roots in the classic rock of the '60s and '70s, Shoot The
Breeze represent a guitar-based rock with focus on great riffs and
strong melodies. The result is a varied and at times innovative rock,

early heavy rock.

With the release of the Ronni le Tekro-produced ANGELS AVENUE in 2009,
Shoot The Breeze, with members Mats Nedberg, Tor Erik Fredheim,

and vocals, Andreas Baklid on drums and Steffen Kjolstad on bass, the
time soon came to add another guitarist. Tor Erik Fredheim got the
job, and it wasn't long before Mats Faugli took over on bass.

A number of minor releases and many live gigs followed, and among
other great accomplishments the band played at the Club Day of the big
Norwegian Oya festival, got air time with two songs the British Sky
Channel Radio, contributed on a CD aimed at the American music
business and played support gigs for big Norwegian bands like
Hellbillies and CC Cowboys.

Another big step for the band was taken in the beginning of 2008, when
dialogue was established with famous guitar legend Ronni le Tekro,
which expressed his fascination for the band's music. A studio session
at Tekro's Studio Studio was booked, with Tekro as a producer.

The result of the studio time with Tekro is now here, and it's named
ANGELS AVENUE E.P. The five-track release is a pure power display of
melodic, riff-based rock 'n' roll, and it's been labelled unlike
anything else in Norwegian rock.

The E.P. has created great feedbacks from both the press and the
business, and the E.P. is currently on its way to the band's
connections all over the world, among others the band's American
promoter which is working on getting the band over for a club tour.

Smirnov's story is a story to tell!

"Typical Russian wonder!" That's what the local newspapers say about
earthling Ivan Smirnov and his new project Smirnov as a result of an
incredible journey from the winters of Russia to the center of L.A.
music scene. Ivan and his earthling band have recently finished
recording their American debut album PRIVET EARTH! with a Grammy-
nominated producer Robb Vallier (Bon Jovi's BLAZE OF GLORY, P.
McCartney, Eurythmics, Whaling Souls, etc.) and have just finished
shooting a video for their first single "A Phuken Angel"... Born in
Saint Petersburg (Russia) and raised in a small city a few hundred

Crafting a sound that pushes the line between elegance and aggression,
Spider Rockets combines contemporary loud rock with classic rock

Comprised of band members Helena Cos on vocals, Johnny Nap on lead

Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd).

"We spent more time devoting to songwriting -- writing, rewriting and
scrapping songs along the way," explains Helena. "Also, we tried to
make the most of the time used in the studio by being prepared and
analyzing stuff beforehand. We had previously recorded on tape -- this
time, no tape and no recording live as a band. Every instrument was
recorded separately, which allowed for much more precision, higher
quality performances and better overall sound." Bones voices this
sentiment, as well. "This one has been well planned and thought out as
a collaboration between the musicians and the engineer. Every song can
hook you in just as much as the last. I don't feel like there is any
filler content at all on this album." Johnny adds, "I think the
quality of the recording and the music on this CD has taken us to a
new place as a band and I'm very excited about it." Dan agrees, "it
was a phenomenal experience working with Eric. I feel between us and
him in the studio, some great stuff happened."

"Spider Rockets is one of those bands that can fit a variety of genres
and play alongside many different styles of bands depending which
songs they play and how you market them. Lead singer Helena has a very
versatile voice; she can do the darker stuff or the more melodic
material. The music itself is on the darker and serious side, with
traces of Metal and a more alternative sound at times. It's honestly
hard to put a sub-genre on it, it is modern rock, plain and simple.

"...I can see them with Nickelback or Hinder.... The production and
sound is superb.... If you are into music with strong lyrics and
substance you will love the band. In fact, I doubt anyone who likes
rock or metal will find much to dislike (unless you have a problem
with female vocals).

With plans to tour extensively to support SPIDER ROCKETS ("Fans can

As with many original bands the sound of Strange Land is difficult to
describe. In the most generic sense the band falls into the
progressive rock/metal category, along with such bands as Fates
Warning, Queensryche, Savatage, Rush, Zero Hour, Pain Of Salvation,
and Galactic Cowboys. Strange Land, however, prefers not to wear its
influences on its sleeve. Rather, the members blend all of their past
musical experiences and outside musical influences into one unique
musical vision. Each member of Strange Land takes an equal part in the
writing and arranging of its music.

Strange Land was established in November of 1998 in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin joining together former members of Labyrinth (U.S.A.) and
Fishboy. The members of Strange Land are Chad Novell on bass,
keyboards and vocals, Sean Gill on guitar, and Brad Klotz on drums.

Within the first six months of its existence, Strange Land had written
and arranged 11 original songs, four of which appeared on the
FOUNDATION demo, whose title track reached #12 on MP3.com's
progressive metal chart. Gabor Kleinbloesem of Strutter Magazine said
of FOUNDATION: "Some more of these catchy and progressive tunes and
this Strange Land may be counted as one of the latest sensations from
the U.S.A." The band has self-released its first full-length album,
ANOMALY, with 12 tracks and almost 70 minutes of material.

The album was recorded with drummer Brad Klotz, who left to pursue
other career interests in the fall of 2001. In 2002 the band put the
final touches on a four-song demo of brand new material (with drummer
Pete Schwarzenbacher) which was well received by fans at the 2002
ProgPower USA festival. The band finished its second full-length album
entitled BLAMING SEASON in late 2004. The CD was recorded with drummer
Esteban Gonzalez, who left after the recording was finished to pursue
other career interests. In 2003 the band landed a distribution deal
with Nightmare Records for worldwide sales. The CD BLAMING SEASON was
well received by fans and critics alike since its release in early
2005. Esteban was replaced by returning member Brad Klotz in 2005.
With the original trio back together there was a new sense of
direction and work progressed on new music. The latest CD CATHARSIS
was released in the summer of 2009. This is an indie release but has
already been selling well through word of mouth and to the Strange
Land faithful. Besides the United States, Strange Land CDs have also
been purchased by fans in Canada, England, France, Spain, Germany,
Japan, Brazil and other countries around the world. Strange Land has
opened for national acts like King's X, Gary Hoey, former Marillion
front man Fish, Three, shredder Joe Stump, fusion super group McGill/
Manring/Stevens and Inside Out prog metal band Event.

The band has also played many Wisconsin P.R.O.G. (Progressive Rock and
Other Groups) shows organized by Dimension X founder and bass player
Dave Burkowitz. The band was a finalist in the 2005 Emergenza
festival, among the top 14 acts out of a field of 200+ bands drawn
from Milwaukee to perform in that year's international competition. In
the past two years the band has also played the M.A.R.S. Festival at

Beyond the name Sol Skugga (Sun Shadow) acts a young woman with many
passions. Being a classically schooled singer, songwriter, producer
and art director, she has woven a musical universe around herself --

Sol Skugga is not really a band, it is a female songwriter and

and Thomas Von Wachenfeldt -- a classical Swedish fiddler, also Stefan

Black Cat Songs/Accented (Sweden), who handle well established artists
like Kingen in Sweden.

Sol has been a character on Internet since the late '90s and most
recently in August 2008 she was interviewed by Swedish radio P3 for
her membership on the video blog Bambuser; one of the places online
where she is sharing her life, thoughts and music. She has a
bachelor's degree in media and interaction design from Lunds
University and is interested in the creation of new digital
solutions in addition to her music career.

The Scorpions will be launching their spectacular world tour with
seven concerts in Germany. Tickets are on sale now.

2009 was the year of the Scorpions: they received the German lifetime
achievement ECHO, collected many other awards, and undertook a grand

will set a milestone for the career of the most successful
international rock band from Germany. The Scorpions will be touring

"My internet friends,

"I would like to send a message for all those who intend to dowload my
album for free:

"Here are a few words on a very important subject to me -- illegal
Internet file sharing download!!! This is also known as -- MURDER OF
MUSIC! Since I have a new album THE ABSOLUTE coming out on December
4th now would be the right time to get into this matter of life and
death.

"You see,... it is very hard to master an instrument. It takes a lot
of years of practice, discipline, study and dedication (like going to
a university and more) to reach the level of playing that I and
similar musicians are at.

"It is really very hard work to compose quality music and create
something special for you listeners out there. It is very hard to make
records too because the studio time is very expensive (making your own
project studio is a big cost too and not many can afford it or even
know how to operate it). It is also very hard to find a Record label
to publish your music these days,... and even harder to arrange real
retail music store distribution to circulate the music on the market
and make it available everywhere.

"But musicians go through all these pains because they love and
believe in music and they believe in fair and just financial reward
return for hard work of producing beauty of music they offer to the
world. Don't you agree that musicians should be paid for their work?

"When people illegaly post or download free MP3 files on Internet of
the music that musician made so many sacrifices to create -- it is the
sign of ULTIMATE DISRESPECT! This means literally taking the bread off
the musician's table and spitting in their face!

"The music business works like this... (if you don't know).

"Musicians who make the music give the album to the label under
certain conditions. Then label sells it through its distribution
channels and shares the percentage of return income with the musician.
Stores and distributors also get their cut for the retail sale service
to you -- the customer. So the bottom line percentage per a CD that
goes back to the musician is quite small in the end. Also don't forget
that musician invested money in studio time so this has to be covered
before musician makes any real profit money!!!

"To make a living from music this way a lot of CDs have to be sold.
That CD money also gets re-invested in touring, new albums, promotion,
etc.

"Everybody in the chain of music industry is living from this system
of sale... magazines, concert promoters, labels, music stores. Every
single CD sold counts and especially today for smaller artists like
myself who do not have a big budget at their disposal to promote
themself in mainstream media, TV, Magazines, etc. (yes, all that
actually has to be paid for and costs quite a lot).

"I know,... CDs in stores cost money (16$ a piece?), the world is in
economic crises and it's easier to get a free download so that you can
put that money into buying your pants and cookies, right? Hey, you can
make a cool free collection of thousands of albums with no money
invested at all! Woohhhoooo, viva la internet!! How cool is this!!!???
Well,... NOT COOL AT ALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Do you eat? Yes...? Me too! (inspite of legends you might have heard
even we musicians need to eat). To get food I have to go to the
grocery store and pay money for it like you. The same goes for clothes
and other products. If you would try to take (or 'download') food or
clothes from the grocery or clothing store the people dressed in blue
outfits called THE POLICE would try to stop you since this is
considered a crime of stealing. What if everybody starts stealing food
unpunished? How will the grocery store employees survive? What about
their family? How would the farmers producing food survive if we take
it from them for free? They would not.

"Do you catch my drift? Just because you CAN download music for free
today on the Internet doesn't mean you SHOULD. You CAN also beat up an
old lady on the street and steal her pension from her wallet ... but
somebody CAN beat you up too and do the same to you. Would you like
this? Or would you perhaps like to go to work 9h-17h for free? Would
you like musicians to visit your home and take some of your property
for free? Why not? They can use it... the same way you can use
illegaly downloaded music without paying for it.

"This all would be called robbery of course and is illegal and if we
would apply this pattern of behaviour to the society in general as a
rule of life we would very soon have a society of filthy, wild
savages!

"My point is -- if there is no money coming back to us musicians for
the ultra hard work we invest we will all eventually give up and stop
making music. If the unchecked Internet theft goes on much longer very
soon there will be no more new albums from the artists you like and
cherish so much on your illegal free MP3 collections!!!

"This will be THE END OF TIMES FOR MUSIC! After we musician give up
the labels will fold, the music stores will turn into ... shoe shops
for example (you can't download those through internet can you now?)!

"Soon after that the whole music industry, concerts, fun time,
guitars,... will be dead and gone -- thanks to Internet and illegal
global piratery system! Game over!

"So if anyone of you wants to continue supporting -- KILLING MUSIC
(that you are supposed to love) go and join the Internet gang of music
hijackers for free through torrents and file sharing sites! The blood
will be on your hands...

"But If you want the music to SURVIVE please treat it like you would
like to be treated yourself and do the right thing by paying for it. I
always paid for the music I wanted and I don't see why each of you
can't -- there's really no excuse!

"SPREAD THE WORD!!! SAVE THE MUSIC YOU LOVE! Or let it bleed and
die... It's all in your hands -- the choice is yours to make. I vote
for life but if it's death of music -- so be it! We can also live in a
world without real music but then don't complain in the future to come
how the music in the media around you is bad and lame and 'where have
all the good times gone.'

June 9-12 Solvesborg

The first bands for Sweden Rock Festival 2010 confirmed

We can now present the first six out of a total of around 60 bands
that will perform at the 2010 edition of Sweden Rock Festival.

First off, we are proud to present Randy Bachman and Fred Turner, who
will be performing together for the first time in 19 years and make
their first festival appearance at Sweden Rock Festival. With songs
like "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" and "Taking Care of Business" in
their catalogue and all the way from Canada: Bachman & Turner. The
concert will be their only in Scandinavia.

Fellow Canadians and progressive melodic rockers Saga will make their
Sweden Rock Festival debut next summer. As will Atlanta, Georgia based
kings (and queen) of funk rock, Mother's Finest.

Fans of melodic metal have waited long to see former Helloween singer
Michael Kiske on stage. Next year's Sweden Rock Festival will see the
first live performance by the legendary singer in 16 years when he
takes the stage with his new band Unisonic. The group, which also
features musicians known from Pink Cream 69 and Krokus, will be
playing their own melodic hard rock originals as well as a few
Helloween classics.

From Norway comes one of the greatest voices in rock history, Jorn,
and last but not least Americans Bigelf will return to Sweden Rock
after nine long years to deliver their unique brand of doomy, Beatles-
influenced progressive rock.

More bands will be presented on Friday, so keep your eyes open! We
have a lot of good things in the pipeline waiting to be confirmed and
more than 50 bands left to announce!

Sweden Rock Festival is organized in Solvesborg in southern Sweden on
June 9-12 2010. This year's festival was visited by 35,200 people, but
in 2010 the maximum number of visitors will be limited to 33,000.

-Dusted Angel Announce West Coast Mini-Tour With Nebula

Cali doom rockers Dusted Angel confirm this week a five-day West Coast
jaunt with stoner rock kings Nebula late this month and into December.

The Santa Cruz-based doom/rock unit Dusted Angel features members of
Bl'ast, Spaceboy, Gargautula and more. Their debut E.P. is available
via iTunes now, with an extra song that is not available on the 7"
release of the E.P. on November 17th. The E.P. is being released by
Corruption Recordings, now exclusively distributed by Relapse Records.

Boston-based Ichabod are one of those "secret bands" that have been
engulfing fans both live and on record for three previous full-lengths
over the past decade; expanding musically on each release, and tapping

-Winterfylleth Sign To Candlelight Records

Formed in 2007 with the intention of honoring England's proud
ancestral heritage and rich national culture, Winterfylleth (comprised
of members culled from the U.K.'s most devastating doom contingent
Atavist) set a solidified mission statement to bring awareness to
England's historical stories, folklore, landscapes and ancestral past
through their folk-influenced vitriolic black metal.

Coining the term English Heritage Black Metal (EHBM), Winterfylleth --
which translates to "Winter Full Moon" from the Olde English language
-- represents the first full moon in October as well as the Anglo-
Saxon festival of the arrival of winter. The band generated a massive
response from the underground with their RISING OF THE WINTER FULL
MOON demo leading to their union with Profound Lore Records. RISING OF
THE WINTER FULL MOON displayed a fierce focused vision on what
Winterfylleth wanted to achieve through their music, and with their
THE GHOST OF HERITAGE debut, that vision became even more solidified
and fleshed out.

By combining vicious yet moody folk inspired black metal that harkens
back to the early days of Enslaved and early Ulver, Winterfylleth also
conjure feelings and moods reminiscent of Drudkh, Hate Forest and
Forefather, while forging new ground to lead the recent black metal
movement in the U.K. Lyrically, the band delve into tales of England's
archaic history, recounting major events and battles and drawing
inspiration from certain sites that grace the countryside of England.

The band recently signed to Candlelight Records for the release of
their forthcoming 2010 album THE MERCIAN SPHERE.

-A buddy forwarded me an article the other day about the death of
comedian Ken Ober. "Who?" you ask? He hosted MTV's silly, awesome old
game show "Remote Control" -- which gave us Adam Sandler, Colin Quinn,
and the babe-a-licious Kari Wuhrer -- in the late '80s. And if I'm not
mistaken he also co-hosted some of the network's spring break specials
and "Rock & Jock" softball games. My friends and I used to watch
"Remote Control" a lot back in college. Great, stupid stuff. Who can
forget the "Dead Or Canadian?" game? I also seem to remember a
"celebrity" episode featuring Anthrax's Charlie Benante, Britny Fox's
"Dizzy" Dean Davidson and Femme Fatale's uber-hot Lorraine Lewis.
Anyway... Ober was only 52 -- what a shame.

-There was a new Bon Jovi album released last week, right? Perhaps I'm
out of the loop but I haven't anyone talk about it, and I haven't
heard anything on the radio. ..

-Heed Neal's review/advice below and get yourself a copy of Halford's
WINTER SONGS. The track "Oh Come O Come Emanuel" is just amazing.
Trust me.

-Another new band with Tim "Ripper" Owens singing. I think he's trying
to become Jeff Scott Soto. :)

This is a very cool new band comprised of two sets of brothers --
Jeremy Goldberg on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, bro Jacob on bass;
and Jordan Ziff on lead guitar, bro Garrett on drums -- who are fairly
young. I missed the debut album, 2007's LIVING A SICK DREAM (which
featured a guest solo from Marty Friedman), but this E.P. definitely
has me anticipating their next one. It kicks off with two originals,
"Cruel Intentions" and "Get Dead," that mix classic power and thrash
metal with wicked guitar soloing, with just enough of a modern vibe to
warrant full crossover appeal. Next up are two classic covers, Skid
Row's "Slave To The Grind" and Judas Priest's "The Hellion/Electric
Eye," that are done very well and establish the band's old school
cred. The E.P. is capped off with live versions of two more heavy
tracks from LIVING A SICK DREAM, "Eye For An Eye" and "Glimpse Of
Light"; while these are also pretty good, I question their
authenticity -- they kinda sound "unleashed in the studio" if you
catch my drift. All in all, this E.P. serves as a killer introduction
to this up-and-coming quartet. Keep your eyes on these guys.

Now here is something I didn't see coming -- a Halford Christmas
album! WINTER SONGS is Rob's nod to the Christmas season, and he does
a great job of bringing the holiday spirit alive with a combination of
original material and traditional (though not always traditionally
arranged!) carols. The album starts off strong with "Get Into The
Spirit," which is everything you would expect a normal Halford track
to be except for the lyrics, followed by delightfully metalized
versions of "We Three Kings" and "Oh Come O Come Emanuel." The title
track is a beautifully performed ballad featuring Rob at his most
sensitive, while "Christmas For Everyone" and "I Don't Care" are fun,
made-for-radio rockers that bring back the atmosphere of those Elton
John and Paul McCartney holiday songs we hear every year. Of course,
there are some fine renditions of must-hear Christmas songs "What
Child Is This," "Oh Holy Night," and "Come All Ye Faithful." It's a
little surreal hearing Rob singing this stuff but he makes it work. If
you enjoy Christmas music infused with rock (think Twisted Sister and
Trans-Siberian Orchestra) you'll get a kick out of WINTER SONGS -- you
may only listen to it for a limited time during the year but it's well
worth putting in the collection, as it's sure to liven up the
festivities!
