Another fine podcast -- thank you!!

The blurb on the above page:
Continuing an annual tradition in The Roadhouse, I’m featuring nominees for this week’s Blues Music Awards in Memphis. Many of the artists made their debut in The Roadhouse in the past year. And, you heard new music here first from those who are more established. Cedric Burnside & Lightnin’ Malcom, Buddy Guy, Curtis Salgado, Paul Rishell & Annie Raines, and Homemade Jamz Blues Band are just a few of the top nominees. We’re skimming the cream from a large pool of blues in the 220th Roadhouse – another hour of great blues.

Thanks to all the musicians who make their recordings availbe to the podcast producers, who devote hundreds of hours of volunteer work to bring these podcasts to us....how LUCKY we are!!

Among the great podcasts I've been listening to, is the Roadhouse 214, which has some fantastic blues jams. Another is BluzNdaBlood 68, which emphasizes blues from Canada. Love the title, Blues Without Borders...not only because it highlites the international range of blues, but also because it reminds us of the invaluable work Doctors Without Borders and Reporters Without Borders.

These are just two of the fine podcasts that are currently available online now -- for others, see both my myspace friends and my profile page, where I've listed some of them. Happy listening!

Roadhouse 214
http://roadhousepodcast.com/
The Roadhouse stretches out a bit this week. We dig deeper than the usual 3- to 4-minute cut to uncover some great blues jams. John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Damon Fowler, Howlin' Wolf, Bobby Parker, and Eric Lindell fill the hour, alongside listener comments. We stretch it out and mix it up in the 214th Roadhouse

The BluzNdaBlood Show #68, Blues Without Borders - From Canada!
http://bluzndablood.libsyn.com/

Welcome back, my friends! Well, we all know that the blues is an American treasure, but you can find great blues music all over the world! To prove the point, the show is called Blues Without Borders and will include a sampling of blues artists from our Northern friends in Canada! So are you ready to hear some Blues from across the border? I hope so! Crank it up my friends, we’re off and running!

The January 4 2009 Sunday Morning Blues Podcast was a fine one, containing "the best blues of 2008 as recorded by our monthly playlists.."  I'm delighted to recommend it to you.  The podcast can be downloaded from here:

Sunday Morning Blues Podcast with Rich Gordan

The first of the four parts of the podcast is here:

Sunday Morning Blues Podcast 1/4/9

The 88th podcast of the South Australian Roots and Blues podcast is also a fine one, and I'd like to recommend it, too.  Their homepage is here:
South Australian Roots and Blues

Their homepage gives this informaiton about the podcast:
Podcast 88. January's edition of Blues Time.
'A Night in Woodstock' was recorded in 2005.  It was just a gig in a bar by front porch duo Paul Rishell and Annie Raines.  It was also an evening captured by a topnotch audio crew. In podcast 88 we share a highlight with you. The club closed down a few months later.
1 Jarrah Thompson - Stargazer - Fly on.
2 Paul Rishell & Annie Raines - A Night In Woodstock - Moving to the Country.
3 Otis Taylor - Recapturing the banjo  - Live your life.
4 Eugene  Hideaway  Bridges - Jump the Joint - Can't Stop Loving You.
5 Paul Reddick - Sugar Bird - John Lennon In New Orleans.
6 Eric Bibb - Spirit I Am - New Beale Street Blues.
7 Laura Veirs - Two Beers Veirs [EP] - Spike Drivers Blues.
8 Harry Manx & Kevin Breit - In Good We Trust - Steal 6.
9 John Earl Walker - Come over here - Backdoor romance.
10 JT Coldfire - Crazy Sun - I Wont Never Go.
11 Seasick Steve & the Level Devils - Cheap - Rockin' Chair.
12 Moreland and Arbucklle - 1861 - Gonna Send Ya Back To Georgia.
13 Billy Jones - My Home town - Bluez Comes Callin.
14 Boo Boo Davis - - Name of the Game - I'm Comin Home.

I'm sure there are a lot of other fine blues podcasts being made now, but I'm just too busy to keep up with them all right now.....but I would like to thank everyone involved in making the huge efforts to keep the blues alive and well, to spread the blues across the world.

Some of the other podcasts I've been listening to mix blues and roots .... and some add songs that are neither .... and this is of course the absolute right of those making the podcasts.  I enjoy them, too, but here want to restrict myself to recommending just blues....or to letting readers know when there may be non-blues involved.  Not putting down other genres of music, please understand....just my policy here.

Happy New Year to all my myspace friends -- with hopes it will be a peaceful, healthy, rewarding, meaningful, fulfilling year for you all.

Many thanks to James McGee of the Blues in the Night for adding me as a friend on his myspace, thereby introducing me to his podcast. It's been awhile since I've discovered a "new" podcast, and the fact that this one is already on session 219 encourages me to wonder what other jewels there are out there waiting to be found...

www.myspace.com/bluesintothenight

The following is the blurb about the podcast and the playlist for edition 219. As he says, the Blues in the Night podcast is not "pure" blues, but includes a broader range of music . . . .

"Blues In The Night Podcast plays the very best of the Creative Commons music better known as Podsafe music. We play Blues, Blues Rock, Jazz, Rock and a bit of Zydeco and Bluegrass.

The Roadhouse 200
13 December 2008

From the blurb on the podcast homepage....

The 200th edition of The Roadhouse Podcast marks a strong year in the blues, with a look at my top 10 blues releases of 2008. We hold the milestone show celebration for the 4th anniversay in February and, instead, keep the spirit festive with more great blues Christmas cuts. It's a celebration of the holidays and the best of 2008 in the 200th Roadhouse Podcast.

Congratulations to Mr. Tony Steidler-Dennison on the occasion of the 200th podcast of the Roadhouse....heading towards February when the podcast will celebrate its fourth anniversary. The wonderful world of blues podcasting simply wouldn't be the same without the Roadhouse! Thank you again!

A bit about the Roadhouse....also from their homepage....

About

The Roadhouse is a true labor of love, intended to present the full range of blues music to a broad Internet audience.

I've often heard folks who are unfamiliar with blues note that it's "such simple music." Indeed, it is. But the range of blues styles is breathtaking. From the Delta to Chicago, from pre-war to jump, acoustic, electric, harps, horns – it's difficult, if not impossible, to describe the emotions conveyed with such a simple form. Blues music is, in my mind, that last great act of defiance; a declaration to the world that, "You gave me your toughest shot and, yes, I'm still standing." Blues lovers everywhere understand.

With that in mind, I'm dedicated, via The Roadhouse, to preserving this priceless musical form, to presenting a broad range of blues each week (much of it by artists that even hardcore blues fans may not be aware of), and to promoting gleeful chair-dancing with each and every show.

Kayla Reeves, who has been one of my myspace friends virtually since I started here, has recently uploaded some videos of her performances, on her own channel on youtube,

http://www.youtube.com/kaylareevesmusic

These are also available either at her own website,

http://www.kaylareeves.com/

or here on myspace....you can find her among my friends. I am delighted to recommend her.

I was first introduced to this wonderful singer through the Texas Blues Cafe podcast, which is a fine podast that preserves the Texas blues traditions while finding the vines branches blooms fruit and seeds of those traditions virtually all around the world. The Texac Blues Cafe is another one of my old myspace friends, and you can find it here, or by clicking on their name, above, and going directly to the podcast homepage.

The Roadhouse podcast for Dec 6 has a special tribute to Odetta and her blues connection, in addition to having Christmas season blues songs.  It's another fine show, as the podcast gets ready for its 200th show.  it's a bit early, but Congratulations to the makers of the "finest blues you never heard" podcast!

The following is from the Roadhouse blues podcast page:

The Roadhouse Podcast 199

We mark the passing of a musical treasure in the 199th Roadhouse. In style and substance, we’re making connections to Odetta. We also pick up the December Roadhouse tradition of holiday blues music. We feature Braithwaite & Whiteley, Frank Morey, Scrapper Blackwell, Sue Foley, and Charlie Musselwhite in this edition. Folk blues and Christmas blues make for another hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard – the 199th edition of The Roadhouse.

Odetta Passes
3 Dec 2008

From the New York Times:

Her voice was an accompaniment to the black-and-white images of the freedom marchers who walked the roads of Alabama and Mississippi and the boulevards of Washington in the quest to end racial discrimination.

Rosa Parks, the woman who started the boycott of segregated buses in Montgomery, Ala., was once asked which songs meant the most to her. She replied, “All of the songs Odetta sings.”

This week I'd like to recommend
Murphy's Saloon Blues Podcast (or you can find his myspace page among my friends....)

Podcast 142 -- featuring Kate Hart

A fine podcast, as always, among the songs included in this week's edition are these by Kate Hart, with links to her MySpace page, and her own website...(she's also one of my myspace friends, and I'm delighted she's featured on this podcast).

• Backup Man, Bowin' to the Main Man and You Can't Go Up 'til You're Done Going Down, all by Kate Hart, and all from Alone Again With Friends (2008); currently available as individual tracks from Kate's MySpace page. Visit KateHart.com for more information.

As usual, Murphy has done a superb job of including links to the artist's homepages, or their MySpace pages...

Thanks, Murphy!

There are a lot of other fine blues podcasts, I just don't have time to report on them all....and am even getting irregular in pointing out a few...but I keep listening, and remain most grateful to the fine people putting the podcasts together and making them available....and to the superb blues artists that make their songs available.
